Carpenters - (I'M CAUGHT BETWEEN) GOODBYE AND I LOVE YOU ["Horizon," 1975]

  • Karen & Richard Carpenter perform "(I'm Caught Between) Goodbye and I Love You" from their 1975 "Horizon" album. This song, written by Richard Carpenter & John Bettis, is a fine example of the Carpenters "sound," comprising Karen's melancholy lead vocal, Richard's nuanced arrangement, and some beautiful K&R background harmonies.
    *******************************
Richard writes of this album on his website:
"For Karen and me, the bulk of 1974 was devoted to worldwide touring. The only releases were 'Please Mr. Postman' which was released in October of that year and reached No.1 in early 1975, and 'Santa Claus Is Coming To Town', released at about the same time. As we were following what was probably our most successful sales year, 1973, which produced both 'Now and Then' and 'The Singles', not to have an album ready for release in 1974 seemed dubious to me at the time, and ludicrous now. Booking well over 200 concerts for us in one year was an egregious decision on the part of our management; it was also a fault of mine for not saying something about it.
As a result, recording on a new album did not commence until late 1974. The resulting 'Horizon' released June 6, 1975, differed from the preceding albums, mostly by value of its production. By this time, A&M Studios had 24 track recording. (By contrast, the 'Offering' album is on 8 tracks and the following four on 16; the many overdubbed vocals ate up a lot of tracks!) The additional tracks allowed us to record the acoustic piano, Rhodes, drums, etc. in stereo.... I must also mention the fine engineering of this album by the late Roger Young. Ironically, though Karen was now suffering with anorexia nervosa, she was never in better voice."

As genius as she was,if asked to pick her very best performance, I would choose this one. It’s so intimate, passionate yet controlled and the low notes are other worldly. Oh God. She was a miracle.

Her voice flows over the orchestration like a butterfly in flight. Ever so gently, knowing exactly where she's going. Nobody can interpret a piece the way she could, taking a mere song & caressing it into a timeless work of art 😍😥. Her heart warming, majestic vocals were also recorded on 1st take 😯💕

Carpenters' album "Horizon" is so underrated, it blows my mind. It has some of their most experimental and beautiful songs on it. "Happy", "Only Yesterday" and this one are my three favorite Carpenters songs. The whine of the pedal steel during the final 20 seconds of this song brings me to tears. There's something so emotive about this song. It makes me so nostalgic and it makes me so sad yet so happy to be alive. I can't describe it.

    • @ckstaff
      @ckstaff 6 років тому +2

Yes, I agree, My teenage years began in 1970, about the same time the Carpenters hit it big. Of course I never admitted it, and I even rejected them as bubblegum radio music, not my style, yet when many of their songs, not all, would come on, mostly on the old AM radio at that time, LOL, I found myself listening to her voice and being like in a trans, still rejecting them though. However, when Only Yesterday started playing on the radio I gave in and actually went to the record shop and bought it, also on 8 track for the car. Only Yesterday, what grabbed me and amazed me of that song was the full range of her voice, damn she was good. Also still to this day, at Christmas time, I still look forward to hearing Merry Christmas Darling. Oh and I still have that 8 track tape.

I have something to tell you
And I know it won't be easy
I've been thinking these past few days
It might be time to leave
    You're like a stranger
    Then you're a lover
Never the same, always hard to believe
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Never knowing quite where I stand
I'm caught between goodbye and I love you
Falling both ways, nowhere to land
    So constantly stranded
    I can't understand it
This troubled life you've handed me
Is like the devil and the deep blue sea
If we go on much longer
If my doubts grow any stronger
Then I may have to let you go
    If only to survive
Give me a reason, why should I stay here
I've tried too hard just to keep love alive
