  • In today’s video see how a DPF regeneration cycle is carried out, and see if having faulty glow plugs will result in a clogged Diesel Particulate Filter on your car. This video applies to diesel cars built between 2000 and 2007 - cars which have a diesel particulate filter, but do NOT have a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC). Watch and find out!

    Thank you so much! My mechanics exact words were, " you need a new dpf filter and you have some faulty glow plugs we can take care of too. So far the estimate is at $4500!!" My car is 10 years old! I had just explained that my husband had recently unexpectedly passed away and my mother and I took the car in. Why do mechanics think women can't read or do research or have male relatives or friends that can advise them? I am definitely going to pass on them repairing my car and I will never take my car there again!!

      If you get those glow plugs (or controller) replaced, then there is a good chance that the DPF will start working properly again on its own. These computer-contolled diesel cars are not understood by a lot of mechanics as they haven't done the necessary update to their education, and these types of cars have only been around for a short time (short as in 20 years). I can't imagine what will happen when most people have electric cars...

    Hi Steven, Thank you so much for your very informative post. I am new to diesel engines and my SAAB 9-3 1.9TiD went into Limp mode recently. Two mechanics tried to steer me towards a new DPF (AUD$2500+labour) or a DPF clean(AUD$795+labour) . However, checking the OBD2 fault codes, I noticed (due to this post) that the glow plugs had a fault as well as a DPF ash fault code. As it turned out all 4 glow plugs were faulty. After replacing them, i went for a 30min drive with revs above 2500rpm and much to my excitement the limp mode - Limited Performance - display disappeared and the car has returned back to full performance. You are a GEM💎. When my DPF does finally require removal for a clean, i'll be following one of your other videos. Looking forward to more videos in the future.

    Thank you so much for sharing your insightful information. My 2012 BMW X5 35d got its check engine light up shortly I replaced engine oil and filter in summer. I did not pay attention to it until I drove the car for a few months, then noticed the engine ran roughly when it got started while ambient temperature was low - 30 deg F or below. I checked the error with my OBDII reader and found out the error code P0672 - Cylinder 2 Glow Plus Circuit (failed or open). As the car still could be started normally, I once thought to keep using it and replace all of glow plugs and its control module by myself (about around $400 material cost in US) once the ambient temperature goes higher next spring, so I can work at my garage to get the repair job done.
    After watch watching your video, I decided to have the BMW dealer to get the repair done as soon as possible, even though it might cost me $1400 to $2000 (I estimate it would take me four hours for myself to get the repair job done, plus material cost) as soon as possible, to avoid any further potential damage to DPF - which is even more expensive repair.
    Thank you for sharing again, Edward

They use a fluid called eolyse, which makes the dpf burn of the soot at a lower temp, these cerine particles get stuck in the dpf where they accumulate, they don't burn. So here after a certain interval, the dpf need to be changed or cleaned.

    From what I learned with my 330d you have to make sure that the glow plugs and glow plug relay module are all working, and that your thermostats have to be working in order for the car to get up to running temperature else the DPF will not regenerate.
    I did mine few year back but is again blocked, only city driving since covid and one glow plug error showing. That's why my dpf has clogged again. Thanks for the video.

    I’m glad I watched this video. After changing my DPF, a DPF pressure sensor, glow plugs all six of them and a new MAF sensor the problem still existed. I have now been advised to change both thermostat even though the temperature on my Carly reads between 80 and 90 which I’m sure is the normal op temperature.I have come to the painful conclusion that it is definitely the glow plug module. The glow plug light is supposed to light up and turn off when the Pre heat is complete, what I’ve been told.Mine only displays for about half a second only when I’ve pushed the start button to crank the engine and that half a second exposure very rarely happens as well usually in winter.I have a e91 335d 2011. Hi, thanks for watching - but sorry to hear that so much has been done to your car and that you are still having the problem! You will need to get a code reader connected to your car that can give you the BMW specific codes to help you troubleshoot your issue - the cheapest I have found is the Autel AP200. If you are still getting error codes for all 6 glow plugs then it is most likely the glow plug controller that has died (although the ECU also doesn't like all brands of glow plug, so it is best to use Beru or Bosch, and use the same brand for all 6). All the best in getting to the bottom of the issue soon!

      Hi, thanks for watching! Glow plug failure is more critical to some cars than others, but if your car is built between 2000 and 2010 then I would definitely keep the glow plugs working 100% in order to keep the DPF happy. If they haven't been changed in many years then a lot of folk change them all at once to be sure they are all good for another 5 or more years. Also a good tip is to make sure that the engine is really warm before you try and take them out, or they have a bad habit of breaking off.

    Your videos are very informative and helpful and I watch all of them, despite knowing most of them. Regarding glow plugs, not all diesel engines need them so badly for dpf regen. As example the Euro5 2.0 HDI from Peugeot that is present also in Ford cars as 2.0 TDCI have an vaporizer also sometimes called "injector" in the dpf that injects the diesel directly. Another plus with this system is that it doesn't dilute your oil.

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  10 місяців тому

      Hi, the glow plugs will usually report a DTC if they aren't working, but things like a clogged up EGR valve, clogged intake manifold, leaking boost hose or leaking turbo may not show any DTC code but may still cause an issue for the DPF. Doing only short journeys will also cause issues because most cars need to be at full engine temperature and be doing a minimum speed before the car will schedule an active regeneration.

I have a Nissan Note 1.5 Tekna 2014 and having been told the DPF is blocked but gives error codes that the Glow Plug preheater module is faulty. Hi, module failures are fairly common, so it could easily be that. There are quite a few systems and sensors that all need to be working for the DPF to function as it should, so it is generally best to get to the bottom of engine errors as soon as you can.

The temperature sensors can fail of course - and the easiest way to check them is to see what temperature they are reading when the car is switched off and the engine is cold, so if they say -200 degrees when it is a 20 degree day then they are definitely not working well! The most likely reason for a low exhaust gas temperature reading is that the EGR valve is not closing completely - so it may need a clean, or it might need replacing.

    Most mechanics do know what the glow plugs do for regeneration. The owners normally say it starts ok to save cost. When it finally dawns that the dpf is blocked due to cancelled
    regeneration attempts because of failed glow plugs they are a nightmare to remove they have a habit of snapping off. We allocate an easy hour per glow minimum, often some take far longer.......

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  3 роки тому

      Hi, thanks for watching! There is a lot of variance on exactly how and when they work depending on year models and brands and engine variants and specific market emission laws, so there is a lot of room for confusion. They are a pain to remove for sure - I think it is a good idea to replace them every 100k miles even if they are working. Getting the engine really hot first can help with the removal as the alloy cylinder head expands twice as much as the steel glow plug, and re-installation with high temperature ceramic grease might make them easier to get out the next time.

      @StevenBTuner  Рік тому

      Hi, a long drive will help clear the soot out of the DPF due to passive regeneration, but it is only a temporary fix. For the much more thorough active regeneration to occur, it is necessary that there are no errors on major engine systems - and on most cars that means the glow plugs too. Usually it is a good idea to replace all of them at once as well as the controller/relay, that way you don't have to worry about them again for another 10 years.

      Hi, thanks for watching! The sensor and throttle body are certainly going to cause the biggest issue, so they should be dealt with first in order to get the DPF regenerating properly again. 2 glow plugs down on an E70 might still be okay, but it is certainly worth scheduling their replacement before more fail - and it is best to do them all at once with Beru or Bosch plugs, as the ECU can sometimes have problems when they don't all match. Thanks for this. I have just moved to a 2017 euro6 diesel with all the gubbins (DPC+DEF+SCR), from a purely electromechanical 1997 diesel so am rapidly learning about a whole new world of computer-mediated anti-pollution systems! I was not aware that glowplugs were now important beyond starting, so thanks for that. Is this true on all cars? I read that at least Renault truck systems have a separate fuel injector in the exhaust before the DPC in order to raise the temp for regeneration. But obviously re-using the existing injectors and glowplug is cheaper and takes up no extra space, so maybe all cars do it this way? Do you know when this started? Since DPFs were fitted, or was it a later innovation after designers learned that they tend to clog up, at least for some types of usage.
    I found a glowplug DTC on my new van, so I've replaced it anyway (not _too_ painful on a Vivaro-B 1.6 R9M). Now I know that was well worth doing.

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  19 днів тому

      Hi, there are quite a few ways it can be done, and glow plugs aren't as critical for cars after 2010, or so, as pretty much all vehicles were fitted with catalysers, which will ignite the extra diesel fuel without needing extra help from the glow plugs. However if the ECU finds that the exhaust temperature is not rising fast enough then it may very well add glow plugs to the mix - and you'd have to dig deep into the software for your individual vehicle to find this kind of thing out...

    Problem is on a car with little value I'm warned against replacing the glow plugs in case one snaps inside the head, which can't be insured against 100% although I'm getting that fed up I'm tempted more and more to get it done.

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  2 роки тому

      Hi, I should probably make a video about the problems of short trips in a modern diesel... To summarize, modern diesels don't send out black smoke anymore, and instead they trap those nasty black soot particles in a special filter called a Diesel Particulate Filter, a DPF. After about 500kms or so the filter becomes full of black soot and the car needs to run a special program to heat up the DPF to over 600 degrees Celcius in order for the soot to combine with oxygen and change from carbon into carbon dioxide - which then passes out of the filter as a much less harmful gas. The trouble is that this special DPF Regeneration program only happens under certain circumstances: the car needs to be fully up to temperature and you need to be driving at a constant speed - usually at around 80km/h, and the car can't have any major engine malfunctions. If you live in the country, or have a long drive to work each day then this is absolutely no problem. However, if you live in a busy city or you only drive a short distance each day then the car will never be able to schedule the active regeneration cycle that it needs to burn off the black soot. So you can do short trips in your car, but you will also need to do the occasional longer journey at least once every 500kms to prevent DPF soot clogging. If there is no possible way for you to do those longer journeys then there are fuel tank additives that are specifically designed to help the soot to burn off at a lower temperature.

      Hi, thanks for watching! All of temperature sensors linked to engine function are pretty critical for DPF function, so I would say it is not something that you can put off until later. Hey man, good video. It got me thinking. I own an E81 120d and my DPF got clogged 2 years ago. I think my mechanic (who replaced my timing chain) also cleaned my DPF, but honestly I am not sure, because I still have the error. (Not on the dashboard, but when I use my EOBD reader it tells me there is an issue there. I have tried resetting it several times. It then disappears for a couple of kilometers but comes back again)
    Point being... I drive quite a lot. About 50.000km per year. I think 98% of these kilometers are on the highway because I never use my car for less than 30km. Then I tend to take my motorbike or my regular bike :p I often drive a single way distance of 250km.
    Besides/on top of that, (probably more often than once per 5.000km) I do some fast driving. I live close to Germany and when I visit Germany I do 2 hours of driving 160 km/h. And often I also do 2 minutes of 200 km/h. The reason I do that is to nicely heat the engine so all the soot and debris can burn away. And obviously it feels awesome.
    Also... I know I have 2 bad glow plugs (have had for the past 1 year). I am wondering what your opinion is on my situation. Do you think by doing this I am preventing a clogged DPF? (My car has done 350.000km at the moment of writing)

    • @StevenBTuner
      @StevenBTuner  4 роки тому

      Hi, the regular fast highway driving is helping to keep that DPF warm enough for good passive regeneration to take place a lot of the time. However with 2 glow-plugs out of action, you are not going to get that DPF up to a high enough temperature to get the most possible soot burnt off. The difference in temperature is more than 100 degrees C with those glow plugs operating.

    @woudjee2 Рік тому

    Hey, I have a question regarding my 120d from 2008. A long time ago, I cleaned my DPF using your chemical method, which has proven to be very effective still.
    Two weeks before my trip to Iceland (where I am now) my glow plugs failed. I replaced all four of them including the control unit and have driven around 3.000 km since. The system was working fine again after I replaced the glow plugs.
    Around 700km ago, I hit a chunk of ice which shredded part of my bottom protection plate. After around 800 km since I hit the ice I got a DPF light. After reading the data stream with my OBD reader, I found out that the temperature was not getting over 510 degrees, no matter how quickly I drive. (Max allowed speed here is 90kmh and I attempted 120kmh for a short duration for testing purposes).
    My hypothesis was that because of the missing bottom plate, the heat could not be contained well enough. That is why I spend yesterday afternoon improvising a fix which I’m sure has a similar form fit function. However, afterwards something strange happens.
    When the car was NOT requesting regeneration, sometimes it attempted it anyway, quitting again after reaching 530 degrees. (Indicating my fix worked). But what’s more crazy is that now it IS actually requesting it, the temperature will not go above 510 degrees anymore again.
    The outside temperature is 3 degrees Celsius. I don’t really see that this is too cold. The state of my DPF should be fine, the glow plugs and control unit are both new and the protection below my engine is proper again.
    Any ideas? Current back pressure at 90-100 kmh is 200 mBar. I have 800 km to go to get back to the boat and get to Denmark, where I can drive on the highway and the temperature is > 10 degrees. If you think there is nothing much I can do, do you guess I could make it till Denmark without causing damage to my engine (which has done a loyal 423.000 km of service already).
    Kind regards

      Hi again! :-) Iceland sounds awesome - I'll have to get there one day! Let me know if you are going through Aalborg and we could grab a coffee. Anyway, back to the DPF, hmm, they are not really designed to be unprotected or to endure thermal shock, so there is a chance that is was cracked when it was in contact with ice. Other possibilities are the temperature sensor was damaged and is not reading quite right, or that the EGR valve is not quite fully closing.

I’ve driving around 600km since I written my previous comment. The car is constantly trying to regenerate and stays around 510 degrees (hence never finishing the cycle). ECUs are usually programmed to turn off regen, when there's at least one active fault code, related to the engine. That includes the glow plugs. So DPF gets clogged as a result of regen not happening, because ECU thinks it shouldn't happen, rather than because of a glow plug is not heating up the air/fuel mixture.

The DPF will clog up very quickly without a working EGR valve, and it might be best to swap out all of the glow plugs as once one fails, the others are not far behind - and they are not that expensive (get the car nice and hot before you try and loosen them). Once those are done you can reset the DPF lifespan and see if it regenerating, and how often - and that will tell you if it really is end of life. Hi, a DPF can be blocked up by ash due to old age, or it can be blocked up temporarily with soot due to some kind of failure that is stopping the normal regeneration process from running that would burn off the soot. If your car has 160,000 miles or more on it then the DPF was probably in need of a clean regardless of everything else. If your car had good power after the clean, but after 500 miles has lost the power, then it could be a system like the glow plugs that is not working, or an EGR valve that is not closing properly or a big boost leak in an intake pipe. If the clean made no difference at all then the issue is probably more likely to a turbo actuator problem or another turbo issue like a clogged or broken turbo VNT ring. With a turbodiesel engine it is quite common for their to be multiple issue before it is noticeable that something is wrong.

    Hello,
    The car is BMW 318D N47, 2008. I had three glow plug DTCs 4A5E, 4A6E, and 4A54 -- after changing the glow plug relay two of three of them have been corrected.

      Hi, thanks for watching! Without all of the glow plugs functioning, the engine ECU can not fully control the exhaust gas temperature - which it needs to do to control the active regeneration. If you are going to replace one glow plug then I would recommend doing them all so that you won't see any glow plug issues for another 100k miles or so. Make sure the engine is nice and warm before starting the job as this will help them come out without snapping off. All the best in getting your 318D back to full health!

When I do cold start the car starts good, but the RPMs are fluctuating, going from 1100 to 1000 or even 950 and then getting back to 1100 which is the correct RPMs value at the cold start this takes like 10 20 seconds after that everything seems to be OK.
      Is it possible that the glow plugs are not tied up enough and maybe the engine is losing some compression? Or do you maybe know what could be the reason for this strange behavior?

      @@dbdb4665 Hi, there are a few things that could cause that, and the most likely is the EGR valve or throttle valve not opening and closing like they should when the car first starts (due to soot buildup). If they are fine then one or more bad fuel injectors can easily do that too. If you think that the glow plugs may not be in fully then it is pretty easy to check for carbon residue that will have leaked past them. While engine compression can be a problem, it is sort of way down the list of possibilities for these engines.

    • @crpth1
      @crpth1 3 роки тому

      Yes, they can be tested in place. Sometimes easily. By the plug, that connect to the glow plug relay. Usually that's the easiest access point. On some cars access to the glow plugs tend to be a nightmare.
      On the glow plug relay socket, there's a very convenient, direct connection to all the glow plugs in one place! So with ignition Off and a multimeter, set to ohms.
      - Connect one test lead to a good ground.
      - Connect the other lead to one of the terminals that lead to the glow plugs.
      In this particular case polarity don't matter! Test leads can be interchanged.
      Depending on model & make, glow plug values tend to range between 0.8 and 1.4 ohm's. If you don't have the specs of your particular model. Just make sure the reading is steady and within the same range among all. No connection mean they're, broken, surely ready to be changed.
      Testing on the plug socket has the added advantage of simultaneously testing the wire and connectors between that measured point and the glow plug itself! further testing is only required if negative result. Otherwise that's enough for most applications.
      - Make sure to NOT touch the live wires! Which can also be tested with the multimeter set to dc voltage! Usually the largest terminals on the plug...
      Cheers

      Hi, thanks for watching! That error message could be caused by differential pressure sensors failing rather than the DPF temperatue sensors, but of course it should be diagnosed by someone familiar with your vehicle first. All four glow plugs failing usually indicates that the glow plug controller or relay has failed, rather than the actual plugs, but once again it should be tested before replacement. Long gone are the days when glow plugs were used to just start a diesel vehicle, and unless it is below freezing they won't even get used for that!. Now they are an integrated part of the pollution reduction system, and work in conjunction with the EGR valve to ensure smooth running, low pollution and efficient regeneration of your DPF. Hi, thanks for watching and commenting and providing some very good information! There is a chance that on your particular car it takes two dead glow plugs to stop the regeneration cycle completely, but having one dead is messing things up a fair bit (I am planning to test this in a future video). Although you probably only need to replace one glow plug, I would say that it is not a bad idea to replace them all because they are not very expensive for Bosch branded plugs, they take a bit of time to get to, and after 100,000 miles they can get very very stuck! When I replaced mine I came very close to breaking 2 of them off, which would have added hours to the job as well as requiring an additional tool. BMW don't use any lubricant on the threads, but if you want to ensure that they are removable in future then a smear of Mercedes-spec ceramic grease is a good idea. If your glow plugs don't want to come out easily then there might be a lot of carbon buildup, so lightly using a glow plug reaming tool before inserting the new plugs could also be a good idea. Good luck getting your BMW back to full health!

For the proper active regeneration to take place you will need all of the main engine systems to be working well. Many diesel cars use the glow plugs as part of the active regeneration cycle, so there can't be any errors. The 'not identical' error is a bit misleading as it really means that a glow plug is failing or that the controller/relay is failing. The best plan is usually to replace all of the glow plugs and the controller in one go so that you can forget about them for another 10 years...

It is very easy to test whether glow plugs are needed in your engine - pull out the fuse, and report back after 1000 miles. What I would be more interested to know, however, is exactly how many glow plugs being out will stop the regeneration process for your engine. Being a 6 cylinder engine, there is a chance that it could still work okay with 3 or 4 plugs that are non-functioning, so if you are curious enough then pull the wires on 4 glow plugs and see what the result is - I'd love to know the answer, but I don't have an M57 to hand at the moment to do the test myself.

      Hi, thanks for the clarification screenshot - I'll go through a few of the things as they relate to your particular car (nice car btw). As I mentioned before, what your car is doing is a post injection pulse (1 or 2 pulses). These occur during the exhaust stroke (as per my video) so they are not the same as a change to the air/fuel ratio at all, because as you can imagine, if your car were to add more fuel at the normal injection time then it would make more power suddenly, which would be very bad from a driver experience point of view! Your BMW model is one of the first to have a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) integrated into the DPF housing just before the DPF material - and one of the things a DOC does is to ignite any un-burnt diesel fuel so that it doesn't end up in the air we breathe, but this means that the engine computer can also deliberately send un-burnt fuel to the DOC (via those post injection pulses) in order to raise the temperature in the DPF, so that an active re-generation can be performed. At this point you're probably wondering what this has to do with glow plugs... well, they are still used on BMWs like yours that have an integrated DOC. Without glow plugs operating your 335d active regeneration might get to 550 degrees C, or if you are on the motorway it may very well get over the magic 600 degrees C threshold for optimum soot burn-off - however it will be a very slow regeneration using a lot of extra fuel and probably not clearing all of the soot away. With the glow plugs fully functioning, the engine computer can quickly raise the DPF temperature to 600, 700 or 800 degrees C to burn off the soot as quickly and efficiently as possible, saving you fuel, and making sure that no power-robbing soot remains. So while your car can function well enough without glow plugs to get to its yearly service, it is not something you want to leave broken.

      Under the dpf documents it highlights the conditions, faults which will prevent a regeneration and the process involved with regards to active and passive regen.
      You will notice it states post injection and throttle valve affect exhaust gas temps.
      Ive included screenshots which state the procedure for the glow plugs. All procedures occur at temperatures below 30 celcius.
      In addition, my real world experience involves clearing the codes whilst warm (ie 80 degrees) and going for an extended drive to trigger a regen. The car regenerated as evidenced by both the ash mass/soot mass readings, and the distance since last regen stored in the dde. When I rescanned the codes whilst warm, I did not have any activation errors which otherwise occur during startup.
      If glow plugs are involved in the regeneration process, why am I not seeing faults relating to activation once the car is up to temperature and actively regenerating?

    Diesels are more trouble than they're worth now. Next motor purchase will be petrol powered.

      They're not so bad - just a bit misunderstood! :-)

      @Toryalai Khan Hi, that isn't really an option for most of the world any more - older diesels are starting to be banned from cities or taxed out of existence.

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! The idea was to be noticed, and that seems to have worked - but not to everyone's tastes, haha. Compare that vid with the 2 videos from this year, and I suspect you'll notice a difference.

      No probs! I would much rather hear an honest opinion, than for someone to just click away onto the next vid without a word. My new year break was used to go through all of the things wrong with the first year's videos, and see what I could do to make them better as I was getting an enormous drop-off in the first 15 to 20 seconds of each video, of up to 60% - and that's only the pre-intro! My latest video has around 20% drop-off at 30 seconds, so it is a big improvement already, but there is always room to make things better. If you would say what you think is one thing that could be improved in the video I released today, then that would super :-)

      @@StevenBTuner as i said or should have correctly said excellent info on the vids, presentation is a bit distracting, i can get you may be trying to make your vids stand out or more interesting so i will leave that to someone who is at least trying to do something, keep up the informative vids

    Hey I think you have potential. So I think you need to stop trying to be interesting. Just talk to the camera just like you would talk to someone in a conversation. It’s like awkward atm.

      Hi, thanks for watching and commenting! I'm making lots of changes for the new year - especially to the intro section, which has annoyed a lot of folk who would otherwise appreciate the content.
