  • As a Mini fan it doesn't get much better than being invited to drive this Classic Mini Cooper S Paddy Hopkirk Tribute Rally Car. This car just oozes heritage and provenance. Only 4 of these replicas were made and this is the only lefthand drive version. Paddy Hopkirk himself owns one of the others.
A huge thank you to my mate Ellis for such a special invite. It is great to be able to share such a special car with you.

@@charlesdebattista7432 I’ve never posted before , but, I’m 68 and I have the fortunate privilege to have smelt one of the ex Works Monte Carlo Minis . It was one of the recce cars that was used to make Ice notes and belonged to a guy in Poynton Cheshire . They have an aroma of petrol brake dust and coolant . Quite unique. I used to go road Rallying and was involved in stage Rallying .No other car has ever smelt the same . The S that I navigated in had that smell too, it too had 1340 s engine 45 DCOE with a box let into the bulkhead , the mandatory twin tanks and DS11 pads no carpets and an LSD which led to the driver having to fight the thing in a straight line . Magic cars and so quick down narrow Welsh lanes . 😊

I'm nearly 60 now, but back in the day my first 4 cars were all minis. 2 were standard and 2 had quite a few ££££'s spent on them as fast road cars. I was smiling all through this video, your excitement perfectly explains the feeling that goes with owning one 😁.

Some of the best fun I've ever had in a car was in an 1100 Special with a stage 1 head, 1-inch spacers all 'round and a cherry-bomb exhaust. It was like a go-cart on bad acid, and had the ability to set off every single car alarm on Bishops Avenue at 4000rpm.

I remember watching Paddy Hopkirk on BBC Grandstand TV, I remember the choke, my first car was an Escort Mk2, no power assisted steering, no disc brakes, no NCAP rating, no rear seat belts, 4 speed gearbox and did I have fun in that car, learnt to drive in a Mk1 Ford Cortina which had a bench front seat and a steering column change. We used to be able to modify the cars buying fog and spot lamps, electronic ignition to fix on to the spark generator, buying a cassette radio and putting extra speakers in, buying Cosmic wheels and spacers and wheel arch extensions. Those were the days. I have to say I got to drive an Infiniti QX70 which had 5.5L V8 and the noise from that was amazing as was hearing the Vettel edition which was tuned even further.

A very good friend lent me an immaculate diamond white genuine B.L. Competitions Department 1450 cooper S for a week. It was faster than a 3.0l capri S and out handled anything, looked bog stock apart from some very special magnesium mini lights......what a machine. I think you can gauge it was the 70s but I can still remember it like yesterday when I watch this.....brilliant

my first car was a 1969 mini ... my gran died in 1977, bless my parents, they kept it for a few years until I could drive. .. I drove it through my college years .. just one wee accident which was a miracle given how I drove that car. swapped the engine one time for another 998cc, straight through exhaust and smaller steering wheel. the handling was unreal .. Thank god I survived ... a coffin on wheels looking back.

Thank you .. I had at the age of 19 for three years a 1968 Morris Mini Cooper 998 (short reach) and that was in 1974, same colour as the one in the video, added Dunlop alloys wheels and a black light bar with Cibies.... Just BRILLIANT. This video brought back so many memories and sounds. Finally sold it and bought a 1972 Opel Mantra 1900A, Had great fun in that too BUT NOTHING LIKE THE COOPER. Just wish I had kept it. Now drive a VW Beach Buggy with an Impreza engine (all year round as live on a small island in the Indian Ocean) ,that brings back in part the same experiences as the Cooper , BUT still would like my old Cooper for the shear experiences of cornering .

The Mini has always been my favourite car since I was a kid.In 1987, I built a ' 1275 Cooper S Rally ' car from an unused Mk3 shell converting it back to ' 65 spec. Hydrolastic suspension with rally s/absorbers.I even cut out of solid brass in the correct script my name ' Coleman 'instead of Cooper on the boot lid and chrome-plated it !.It was utter magic and turned heads everywhere but hard to believe then the specialist insurance company would not maintain its agreed value annually when it was valued at £2000 !.In a moment of madness I sold it and it was subsequently written off by a young new owner.I am determined to have another Mk1 Mini before I'm done - in my opinion the most classless & perfect piece of automotive design ever.Love classis Fords as well but I still think the Mini wins as you feel so proud to be driving one !.

I saw the Halda on the dash which instantly transported me back to my Dad's 63 Mini Cooper which he rallied in the '60s. He used to put a bit of clear plastic tube on the switches, extending them and making it easier to zero the dials. Haven't thought about that for ages! And the noise in the video is faithful. Fabulous.

I owned and tuned a 1978 Mini Clubman, 1275 GT. I bored it out to 1410cc , had 1:3/4 inch SU carb, orcelli torque master inlet manifold, Kent 286 MD cam, Powermax pistons, spax gasmatic shocks, nylon bushes on the sub-frame, 3:1 diff, LCB with RC40 exhaust, High lift rockers, 12” Superlite alloys with Yokohama tyres, and I used to use Pete Baldwin at Marshall Cambridge to tune it on the rolling road there. 120bhp at the wheels, standard 1275gt was 67hp!!! Used to race RS Turbo escorts and leave them behind......great fun, very fast, handled like it was on rails, but a very dangerous car from a safety aspect compared to today. Miss it tho as it was a beast!!!!

Petrol Ped it was a great little car, a true wolf in sheep’s clothing. Pete Baldwin was my friends dad, British mini champion and had won many Cups driving mini’s , so he knew his stuff. The bodywork needed some attention but I effectively ran out of money as the mpg was horrendous when you toe’d it 😂, probably about 15-20 mpg. So many times, the looks on people’s faces when this old mini goes roaring past them......as it was 4 gears, it ran out of puff just after 100mph, but up until that it was a rocket.

Always wanted a mini after a mate had an 850cc about 30 yrs ago, back when you could get a Mini for around £100.
When I sat in his I couldnt use the sun visor as it already blocked part of my view when it was up, we went on the motor once got it to 80 and the thing was rattling and shaking like crazy, one day he overtightened the bolt hold the top bar/engine mount to the engine and sheared it of, the engine rocked like crazy every gear change, he was to tight to get it fixed and the engine rocking bent the carb etc with hitting the bulkhead, he sold it for £50 and got a Fiat 127 lol, I dont think theres many Mini parts you could get for £50 these days, if only we knew back then.

I'm glad these cars still have a great following, but I'm now in my early 70's and my first car was a Mini Van which was great for being at Uni, then I bought a Cooper and graduated to a Cooper S , but after a while you get fed up of driving around in a box and couldn't wait to get rid of it, so I bought an Austin 1300 GT which was as great to drive but so much more comfortable than the S, mind you I had the engine bored out to the same spec as the rally Minis 1293cc fitted a 731 cam, had twin HS4 carbs, the head was modified by Downton, so had all the fun of a Cooper S but with more space and comfort! Sold that after a couple years and bought a Dolly Sprint - I was growing up then!!

I bought my 1962 Mini 850 about 1967, fitted an 1100cc engine with 12G295 head etc. still have the thing. About the early 80's I bought my Dad a Vanden Plas 1300 (1100 body). Rebuilt the 1275 engine and gearbox, know what you mean about the comfort of the 1300GT, much quieter too, especially the VDP version. Silly me for selling the VDP 1300.

Greetings driver. A lil pearler of a car. Stunning condition. So much character, which the modern Mini encapsulates a bit, but ya can’t knock the original. A true Mini go cart. Love it.

I think .......but I maybe wrong You have the plastic window slider locks the early Minis had silver chrome slider locks My first mini was a 1962 850 export model it had Cooper trim ie Cooper seats chrome round the front windows and the window screen dash top had a black PVC covering basically it was all Cooper trim but the grill was the standard 850s After spending the first 2 years of its life in South Africa it was imported back to the UK in 1964 and in those days it way given a 1964 reg no ALV334B This model did have the metal window locks I loved this car after the fitting of a straight through exhaust it sounded a treat and with the rear windows open on the latch it was incredible. I spent a load of money on this car with Taurus tuning head and cam Wheels etc It looked like a Cooper but it wasn't and the onset of Ford Anglia,s with 1600 cc engines fitted it struggled to keep up .....So I then purchased a 1966 Austin 1257 s I kept it for a year but sadly it was an hydroelastic model and just didn't have the same handling ........I want my youth back ....those were the days

Cracking car & upload. That’s proper old school. Passed my test in a mini in the 80’s & owned one or two. Youth of today don’t know what there missing. No driver aids and very easy to work on. No complex electronic systems to go wrong. Brought back some good memories. More of the same please 👍🏻

In 1970 whilst working at a BMC Garage I was asked to be Co Driver in a Ex Works BMC Mini Cooper S, the garage owned, it didn’t have Twin Fuel Tanks as all Works Minis weren’t fitted with Twin Tanks and was an Optional Extra on road cars.

Absolutely brilliant, took me back to my first & second Minis. Number one was a 1959 (676 AYU) in Farina Grey, bought it in 1968, spent evenings and weekends repairing the damaged front end. Number two was a 1963 Cooper (971 DF) in Almond Green/Old English White. There were several more to follow but those two will stay in my memory forever.
Have to admit I was grinning all the way through the video. Huge 👍🏻 to Ellis for sharing his awesome Mini.

Wow Pete. Let me say thank you my friend. I’ve never driven a classic mini, but wow ! What your awesome video did bring back to me was memories of my youth driving heavily modified Holden Torana GTR. It was loud, harsh, raw and brutal. At 47 and just having lost my dad to cancer; it really really lifted my spirits and made my day! Matt From Australia 🇦🇺
