Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels - DF Tech Review - Another Brilliant DLC? - All Systems Tested
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лип 2022
- Forza Horizon and Hot Wheels made for a beautiful combination when the two franchises first collided in FH3 - but this new expansion is even better! In this tech review, Oliver Mackenzie assesses how ForzaTech engine's upgrades embellish the Hot Wheels experience, how the DLC improves over the original - plus there's a small comparison with the actual Hot Wheels title! All consoles are tested too, so while the Xbox Series consoles are the focus, you'll get to see how the game looks and runs on the Xbox machines of yesteryear too.

These types of videos always bring a certain type of comfort to me that I can’t quite explain, even if I’m not that interested in the game being tested. There’s no judgement, just facts and appreciation for video games, with their ever-evolving technologies.
That's because we are listening to some of the best computer graphics experts and analysts.
Agree
I know exactly what you mean; it's ineffible.
Pffft...fanboy.
😉
The sub-surface scattering on the tracks when you're underneath them is a nice addition.
I would love to see an F-Zero like anti gravity setting DLC.
I didn't know I wanted this but omg yes please
Id like to see F zero lol
@@senorsnipey1595 Same here. It's been nearly TWENTY YEARS since F-Zero GX on the GameCube! I hope once Nintendo announces a new console a new F-Zero is a launch title for it.
Was playing last night thinking the same thing. Or their take on an F-Zero game with cutscene and narrative. Would be awesome!
How about a Wipeout themed DLC for Forza? I'm sure the company that owns the IP would happily give it to Microsoft for free, for the exposure and doors it would open.
Was never able to buy FH3's Hot Wheels DLC so this makes me happy, was always wowed by the concept. (still annoyed we can't legally buy a game from 2016!).
You can buy the game just go in ebay or any used market place
@@ezyclapz1221 Game? Yes. DLC? No.
saaaaaaame
I found a crack of it on PC within about 10 minutes. Has all the DLC too. I got into Forza through the 5th horizon game and wanted to go through all of them.
Unfortunately piracy is preservation at this point.
@@polski8bit that’s annoying with Microsoft game isn’t that old but just remove it. Great game preservation.
Even licensed it’s fucking Microsoft also they need to fix their drm
This is a kick ass DLC, so glad it happened. I was afraid it wouldn’t happen since Hot Wheels had their own racing game a couple years ago.
I mean Hot Wheels gets paid for licensing so I don't think they're hurt over this. Same way MLB has their own game yet allows PlayStation the license to make their MLB game.
@@ClapperDan cool
Seeing over the top environments like this really makes me want then to get a contract to use their team and engine to make a remake of Podracer
That would be fucking awesome
That would be really really good.
Man , some shots and sceneries looked awesome , its like you're racing in dreams.
Incredible footage, the game looks stunning.
Love you guys, watch you almost every day. Thanks for all the hard work.
The lack of Tesselation deformation on the snow was odd to me as well. Especially since even in Forza Horizon 5 base game, it can be found with sand dunes.
Water physics seem to be slightly downgraded as well. Very odd.
those things take time just say thanks they did a dlc in 6 months
@@lofi1598 no, there are nothing to do with time
@@lofi1598 I am not a professional game developer nor have I worked with Playground's engine so I cannot say for certain. But these things do not feel like very time consuming things to add at least compared to all the other incredibly impressive stuff in the dlc (which I would be seriously surprised if they've been working on it for only 6 months. This is a year project minimum).
These are just caveats tho. I've been really enjoying the Expansion. Sense of speed is seriously incredible and the map is just breath-taking to navigate.
@@yellowbat79 They removed some big tripple loop from the trailer, Im sure this has something to do with keeping that paper weight of an OG xbox at locked 30.
@@RooeeZe can we drop last gen already. shitty jaguar cores and 5400rpm hard drives are holding back everything.
Real big fan of the new blood at DF. Lots more high quality coverage of games/updates that would sometimes get missed by the team, due to the sheer amount of games that come out.
Same, but Battaglia Linneman and Ledbetter are still my faves
Great review, as always! You've been such a great addition to an already great crew!
I actually really liked that you drive slower cars at first. FH4 and 5 both had the problem where you instantly have cars or have access to cars that easily reach super car speeds.
It really makes me miss games like NFSU2 where you slowly progress in speed and can use your starting car throughout the whole game. After that NFS games had the problem of being 90% super cars.
This is what made me bored and put down both FH4 and 5 after 10-15 hours, I simply didn't feel that I had any real goal when it came to the cars. This is usually the main thing I work towards in other racing games, new faster and better cars.
@@MrMeanh Yeah. Same I always want a carrot to chase.
I really hope with Forza Horizon 6 they will finally implement volumetric clouds, not only are they way more dynamic, but they could also do way more interesting things with them like actually driving through them or interacting with them and the light shining through them always looks incredible. Almost every open world game over the past few years have them.
You do realize they use actual photographs and video of the real sky right?
@@zybch Which equals a 2D image.. it's great for the skybox but I honestly think it should only be for the very distant clouds and the night sky (which still looks like garbage in Horizon 5).
Dude play GT7 that game has it from day one.
@@zybch Yes? That's how skyboxes work. How does that matter?
Skyboxes will always have limitations and you can easily tell when you look at games like FH5.
Volumetric clouds just look 100x better at this point, can be freely adjusted in terms of shape, softness, density, have actual volume, can be used even close to your car, can be interacted with, light can interact with them etc.
And it will save devs from having to spend months taknig pictures and videos of clouds.
@@kwedl Honestly I’m arguing that FH5 has the highest picture quality for their sky out of any game that has ever been released. It is just a sandbox but there just isn’t any game that has come close to producing the “real-life” look that FH5 has. Yeah volumetric clouds might have better/easier features, however the sky literally looks like it is straight out of an I max movie. Honestly thinking this could be the new wave for Sky sandboxes.
As you say in the video, I really love how they've given the existing tech more opportunities to shine with this DLC. The water flumes, huge drops, moving in and out of shade, neon lighting at night all give the already excellent graphics a real showcase here.
I'm so very thankful for TAA. I stream forza from a pc with a gtx750ti, and TAA made WONDERS for me and the quality of my streams.
I like the game, but love this DLC. Such a dream to play on pc with a rtx 3080. I play at 4k max settings with taa, 60-90 fps with g-sync. And i love the kinda realistic driving (assists off) and striking landscapes.
Despite comparing it unfavorably here, Hot Wheels Unleashed is actually a title I'd be interested in seeing you guys take a more in-depth look at. There's some really strong use of UE4's technical strengths and excellent attention to detail on the tracks and, crucially, the cars themselves. Forza's DLC is (with one exception) using Hot Wheels that were made into full size, actually functional cars, presumably so they could make use of their photogrammetric pipeline; Unleashed tries to recreate the toys themselves and does an incredible job at it, especially considering the smaller team size and overall budget.
One things you guys forgot to mention is that on the Hot Wheels map, when SSR fades out due to the subject not being on screen anymore, they rely on cube maps to show reflections, a first since Horizon 3 which used some other form of reflections. Sadly it's not implemented in the base map but it's a nice addition nonetheless and far reduces the reflection breakup.
This only seems to work some of the time. I've noticed that though.
Another great video DF!
Wow... thats looks so damn AWESOME!!! Looks like a forza horizon f-zero edition, I'm loving it!
Another praise by DF! Looks great!
Great Stuff, as always!
Been playing a bit on series x, looks and runs great. Without as much foliage and terrain to deal with I haven’t noticed any pop in, which was the only visual shortcoming of the base game.
Such an amazing DLC. Gameplay and fun factor are off the charts.
I can't believe this was a year and a half ago already.
I thought the reflections on the car ingame where raytracing - they look really good and seem to reflect the whole environment including other cars.
Only the hood reflects cars and objects, because it uses screen space reflections. You can tell because it's very common for things to not reflect on parts of hoods that are angled back (like hood scoops), and the sides can't have anything reflected there with screen space and reverts to cube maps, low quality ones that take more than a second to update (the reflections on the car's body also do that if you're in first person in the cockpit, and the reflections aren't set to Extreme. In third person they do that if it's set to the lowest setting).
Plenty of games do that, but I'll admit it looks particularly schmick at 4K60 here :)
What was the background music you guys used for this video? I could listen to it all day
Having a blast with this game.
I play in 2K Full max settings with MSAA 4X on GTX 1080 Ti. Stability 75-100 + FPS. The game show really detailed picture then TXAA.
Hopefully the next Forza Horizon will be fully current gen and have completely newly built car models, tracts, environments.. etc to take full advantage of Series X/S!
problem is series s will always hold them back a bit because they need to keep in mind the weaker console.
That's why playstation took the right approach with making the same spec console.
In general, these games are amazing even when the older gen is holding them back.
@@ShaShizzle series s isn't an issue it has the same cpu just need to scale down graphical effects
This looks bonkers fun and pretty amazing. I'll have to get it this week. Great addition for XBOX/PC.
Just a note here, Hot Wheels is more demanding than the base game on PC. On the same settings that I get 50-60 fps on the base game, I get 30-40 in Hot Wheels. I'm guessing the Series consoles had plenty of headroom for this and as such they didn't have to downgrade anything, but maybe the game drops resolution a little more as a result.
Interesting, I find the game to run better on both my PC with an i7 10700k and 3080 as well as the Steam Deck on the new Hot Wheels map than on Mexico
what's the music track at the beginning?
you guys need to start listing what music you're using in videos

@@ptrcrispy Yeah, Ultra in FH3 got permanently changed to what used to be "Medium" in Nov 2016 or so (impossible to change it back btw)
Grass and shadow distances cut in more than half - there was almost no pop-in on PC prior to that patch. Then bam, an update lands, performance doubles, the game looks like garbage and everyone rejoices on the forums. FH4, if anything, looks worse than post-downgrade FH3 and FH5 looks like FH4. Nice.
Watching this just made me wish Playground could be the ones developing the next F-Zero game 😔
Idk if it's just me but on both my Series X and S, ever since the HW pack launched the initial load times of the game seems to have doubled no matter what part of the maps I'm gonna load too
I know it's not going to happen, but I'd love a modern game based on the Speed Racer movie. With modern rendering tech, they could really capture the look of the film and there's plenty of room for fun gameplay mechanics.
I really regretted not buying the Hot Wheels DLC for Forza Horizon 3 when it was delisted so i bought the Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels DLC on the day it came out and i loved it :)
Omfg... this Game!!! It's like Face Melting SPEED & Rock n Roll 🎸 I LOVE IT !!!
Uh-oh they zoomed in 500% to show you the clouds look textury. Oh jeeze
This is the best Xbox game out currently. Still playing and enjoying this game. Hot wheels expansion was amazing to play through.
I've got odd running issues on the windows store version, I'm running a 5950x, 3080, 32Gb CL14 with a 165Hz 1440p monitor reduced to 144Hz, FH5 vanilla runs perfectly, I'm running the high preset which sees a locked 144fps with around 65% gpu usage in free roam and around 90-95% in race. Whilst playing the HW expansion however I regularly get 144fps with around 85% gpu usage in free roam but quite often during a race I'm only getting around 85fps with gpu usage around 45%
I would love to see a "day of the dead" expansion pack, and make a landscape like in COCO, all colorful and in the night with colorful animals "alebrijes"

Been enjoying it on Steam! Great DLC plays beautifully on a 3090 ^^
I love these, it's just a shame they stop selling it the minute the new games go on sale.
This game was a great success VS Halo Infinite. I'm not a racer guy but had fun with this on my PC and got 3 months of game pass for a dollar. I bought some DLC to support Playground games.
Great DLC and super fun to play. Playground Games does excellent work.
what's with the blue circles on the tracks?
Bit too harsh on the Hot Wheels Unleashed comparison. I think that game looks amazing, especially the cars look so lifelike. And tbh. the gameplay is better and much more fitting the theme.
Another good'n, Oli!
this looks like so much fun
I agree TAA must better than msaa in forza horizon 5 but Unfortunately still use msaa on consoles. I sended feedback to add TAA and AMD FSR 2.2.1 for xbox series x|s. hopefully added this features soon to console too .
And now I want to see them make a WipEout game.
It´s a MONSTER.
This looks so good !
I do love these guys, don’t me wrong.
Sometimes though, have you ever asked yourself “do these guys ever actually play a game for the enjoyment of playing a game, or do they sit and analyse every single graphical detail, constantly? “
They certainly didn't care about the audio - the music has some decent selections but they've gone and censored the shit out of half of the songs so it's nothing at all like the artform was intended to be :(
I so wish Forza was on PlayStation. From the onset the title has always been incredibly compelling.
Yeah I can only imagine playing that p2w gt7 cashgrab crap while there is Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon on Xbox Gamepass.
@@redhunter1535 yeah and also Forza is a regular release which is amazing
Please also REVIEW HOTWHEELS UNLEASHED on all platforms please
I hope you guys do a test on fh5 performance degration over time issue came back again will get unstable frame rate and frame times after playing for like an hour had this happen on 2 systems
On PC he didn't cover that some places just tank FPS regardless of what HW you have. I've noticed clips online that show performance issues even on the RTX 3080 and 11 gen Intel Core i7 CPUs, but for some reason Oliver didn't see fit to include any issues with the PC version.
@@VariantAEC you have to set reflections one below highest setting and shaders also one below highest and its fine.
@@OutOfRangeDE
That shouldn't be necessary with RT performance of PCs with an RTX 3080 being at least 60% better than the latest consoles. RT is only visible in Forzavista mode and inside garages, so switching that setting does nothing for performance at all outside of those modes. Supposedly that cheat engine hack has been patched out. My guess is the app now checks to see whether you are in the specified locations that use RT and ignores cheat engine edits if you aren't (until cheat engine users can convince the app that gameplay is Forzavista mode or inside the garage).
Shader quality on Xbox is also set to "Ultra" if I'm not mistaken (the highest setting being "Extreme" for shaders). Another sad state of affairs when PCs that cost much more than consoles already well over a year after launch cannot max out game performance and visuals when consoles are pushing nearly the highest settings.
Basically consoles are looking excellent against the latest gaming PC builds.
@@VariantAEC 1. I never talked about the rt setting, it doesnt affect gameplay performance, only FV . 2. No the game looks way worse with more pop in, even on series x vs the settings i just stated (all max except these 2 options that are one below max). I compared both with my own eyes.
@@OutOfRangeDE
My bad confused cube map and SSR reflection settings with RT.
I've noticed SSR has a huge impact in FH5 not so much the dynamic reflection cubemap setting.
All systems except PC where the FPS is absymal for hot wheels if you have AMD SAM enabled
I'm having a ton of fun with this expansion, but the load times are getting seriously disruptive on Xbox One. Having to wait 2-3 minutes on my One X to load into the main map before being able to select the expansion and load into that for another 2 minutes or so really adds up. I hope they add an option to go straight to the Hot Wheels map from the title screen.
And is it just me, or have the Xbox One load times gotten generally worse since the expansion came out? I swear the initial load into Mexico is longer, as well as the "freeze" when you first leave the menus and start driving, but your inputs aren't registered for 20+ seconds while the game finishes loading. I swear it took me like 10 minutes the other day to get from initially launching the game to actually being able to control a car in the Hot Wheels map. Any other last-gen players experiencing anything like this?
your hard drive sounds very tired... my brothers one S loads up the game a lot quicker than what you are describing but he got it brand new when lockdown hit.
Yea. Your hard drive seems to be coming to an end. You can always buy a new hard drive or ssd and replace it with the old one (up to 2tb support i believe).
Series x is almost instant sorry bud
Love it but you can't see the tracks from the ground ??!!!
Ah Forza Horizon!❤️

I think I hear the same music at the start of this video as was in the Assetto Corsa Competizione video, and I'd love to know what it is. Anyone? Oliver?
Forza Horizon 5 = brilliant optimization!
"the tech appears the same" Yeah but that tech is incredible so thats just fine lol
The analysis itself shows that the game has had graphical improvements compared to the last Forza Horizon: Hotwheels (FH3), in addition to updates by the graphics engine.
How's it running on Steam Deck?
Dang. So pretty. Would love to see some weapons added a la Mario Kart.
One thing with TAA in this game is that it doesn't work in picture mode, in fact the game just turns off all forms of AA if you go into the picture mode with TAA enabled. I've gone back to 4x MSAA because of that one annoying issue.
It works in photo mode. TAA will enable if the image is still.
It 100% does not use TAA in photo mode.
@@FatSacks it works on my end. Whenever you stop moving the camera the image automatically smoothes out the edges if the camera is stationary.
I know what you're talking about. It still doesn't apply taa until after you take the screenshot and then upload it to their dumb service.
So when's the PS5 system update Beta 1440p video drop?
I need this!!!
Can y’all look into PuBg since it got an update for PS5/XboxSeries?
"...why not expose [ray-tracing for self-reflections on cars] as an option for players (on PC)"
I think Microsoft might be against one of their biggest franchises having such a big feature like that not available even on a Series X (I mean, there's the resolution, maxed graphical options and high FPS if you have the hardware, but that's always been the case for any game)
Which is a shame, as I really wanted to upgrade from my GTX1060 to an RTX3050 (Small performance boost, but it does have hardware Ray-Tracing, and DLSS. And it's also brand new, so, you know, no wear from bitcoin mining) and it probably would run this game well with the graphics I want + RT (if it only had basic self-reflections like we get on the garages, and from the Ray-Tracing mod)
I was blown away by the geometry quality. The cliffside rocks and volcanic basin look photorealistic and could be passed as real if it werent for the orange tracks
To be really honest I wouldn't mind the arcady controls for hot wheels.
But for the base forza horizon, I much prefer having the controls of forza motor sport or gt
I really like the HW expansion so far, but I was a bit disappointed that they didn’t take the opportunity with the big update to fix the stuttering issues this game has had since launch. Now I’m even more saddened seeing that the frame pacing is really good and there are apparently no stutters on Xbox - how comes?
I have a pretty decent rig, so I kinda doubt it’s that and a friend of mine has stuttering as well it seems.
They had a great base with FH4, which was running buttery smooth, so idk what happened..
Little disappointed there was no mention of the added seriesx FOV slider or its affect on performance
there better be a track editior
how can you have hot wheels without a track editor?
It looks really damn good. But I’m stuck on class A cars and can’t figure out how to get more of the stupid point things to unlock more races… I really hate the progression system.
There is an in-game Hot Wheels progression screen (accessible via the menu) where you can see the list of things you can do to earn the points to progress to the next level
It's all spelled out on the screen for the class, fill out the main goals for the class and you should be good. Usually some combination of winning all of the races in expert difficulty, doing the storyline missions and racing between point a and point b as fast as possible.
Really hoping Forza Motorsport is going to be a game for grown ups.
.... what do you consider a grown up?
Is it the fact that it's a hotwheels expansion that bothers you here, too many toys in your toy? You sound like a teenager that thinks they're getting too old for fun things because they're "for the children", yet you play video games and kids are one of their largest demographics. Grow up.
@@necrosis07

TAA is an okay addition for consoles, but MSAA x8 still the way to go on PC. Looks so much better and not that resource intensive at all.
Am I the only one who doesn't notice the aliasing (or lack of) until it was noted here?
I fantasize about playing Mario Kart in 4K 120fps
My eyes don't have the ability to zoom in.
Is TAA better than 4x MSAA?
Yes, a good TAA is better and more performant than 4xMSAA :)
I’m sorry but I feel like compression actually helps make this games look better on UA-cam cause when I play raw on my 4K the lod is so bad, low textures left and right and filled with visual noise
Great Game. Playground Games are easily Xbox's best studio ATM.
Another solid win for XBOX 💚
surely the reason they don't let you use RT in game on PC is for parity reasons
A DF video and no performance comparison between MSAA and TAA? Why?
I just hate how they start you in last place in too many of the races. Absolutely hate it!
I hope it will be on Game pass soon
It won't be. We already get the base game so I don't mind buying the dlc. Can't have everything on GP.
this and hot wheels unleashed are PEAK. Love it.
While I do get bored of driving games very quickly, it does look nice.
I used to love racing games in the past and got really good at them but like you, as I got older, driving games don't appeal to me any more, still, I'm here for the tech side of things.
