This is where every inspirational sales copy cat movie got it's inspiration. It's quoted by REAL sales people because they do whatever it takes to close a deal (work harder, do more research, educate themselves in school, educate themselves on the job, get smarter in order to sell more things). It's not abusive, it's satirical and it's a dose of reality.
Satirical because no sales manager will speak this way but the reality is every sales manager wants their people willing to do what it takes to sell more NO EXCUSES & you should want this for yourself, be better at everything you do NO EXCUSES.
If you don't do a good job at work do you really think or expect a company to keep you around? I am guessing you work for the DMV if that's the case. If someone really feels they need to speak to you like this, THE REALITY IS YOU'RE FIRED. There is no speech to motivate a mediocre worker, you either rise to the occasion or eventually you're out. That is called business. The faster a businessman can see whether you're a producer or non-producer the better for business as negativity (a non-producer and complainer) can bring down a company's culture.
Of course if you're a non-producer and think everything should just be handed to you and you do not try and earn something then of course you hate this clip, you hate me and you hate the system (maybe work for the DMV?)
If you have an inner voice, train it to think like Alec Baldwin's voice in this movie, the message: BE HUNGRY, WORK SMARTER, DO WHAT IT TAKES, IF THERE ISN'T A WAY MAKE A WAY, GET UP EVERYDAY READY TO ATTACK YOUR GOALS, CRUSH YOUR GOALS, DON'T KNOW HOW? LEARN HOW and Always push yourself to do better, be better, sell better.
This is a speech to motivate the un-motivatable, the complainers, the life long victims of circumstance which would never happen because at that point you would have been fired a long time before that IN REALITY.
Every successful CEO has be the #1 best Sales person for the company and that's where it all starts and ends.
The real sad part is all of the negative trolls posting on here are not & will never be successful because they do not understand the message or put in the work:
1.) It's the message not the speech that should be driving you to be better everyday, that's what it takes
2.) You have to sacrifice time, energy and hard work (which 99% of the population is not willing to do) and this is why we have a 1% out there making most of the money. They decided to focus their efforts on a career that was very lucrative, put in the time to learn how to be good at it (10,000 hours +) and applied their knowledge they've learned to their craft and executed on a dream.
As Thomas Edison once said, "Most people miss opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work."
We're all a little guilty of this, ALL OF US at some point in life.
    - If you want to live paycheck to paycheck and work really hard for that paycheck doing manual backbreaking labor everyday and you want to continue like this we all have respect for you and thank you for it. THIS CLIP ISN'T FOR YOU.
    - If you want to work your job, pay your bills and live "your American dream" and you're happy with where you are in life then we all respect you for your choice and thank you. THIS CLIP ISN'T FOR YOU.
    - If you want to do the least amount of work for the most amount of money then great, we all respect you for your choices (good luck). THIS CLIP ISN'T FOR YOU.
THE PEOPLE WHO GET THIS CLIP understand the message and will watch it as many times as needed to re-energize their motivation, I know I do.
There is no shortage of money out there, only a shortage of people trying to go get it.
    NOW PUT IN WORK!

Every single cast member in this film is awesome and perfect for the role he played. Alan Arkin’s portrayal of George Aranow is great: the honest, good natured man who cannot close a sale. I worked in sales for many years and tbh if I could start all over again I would never have gone into sales. It was brilliant when I first started but then over the years it just got toxic managers would put you under pressure to hit targets and you had many KPIs to achieve. I remember one manager would scream “I don’t give a f*** how you get the sales lie, cheat just get the f****** sales”. The deceit, and dishonesty goes hand in hand with any company that has a sales department. The bigger the company, the bigger the deception.

The real world is 'Zero-Sum', in that we don't share power, one has more of it than the other (yes, i know zero sum mean 1 person has ALL the power, but work with me here). How many people at your job who are not managers or supervisors try to act like one, especially to the newbies? All of us want something to be in charge of, whether it is work, or home. The very thing here in America--only number 1 counts. If you lose the Superbowl, you are a loser--when really, you came in second. remember all those people you had to beat to get there? Took me almost 25 years to see this thing and they just don't make them like this anymore. This is the movie with steel balls as Baldwin says. Despite great performances and they are wonderful, what thrilled me here the most is incredibly intelligent screenplay, intriguing characters and raw, flamboyant energy that exists in the air. It is a film with attitude, film that is not afraid to show reality of the situations when you find yourself under pressure and film populated with scumbags who will do anything just to keep the money flow. Basically this is the representation what harsh and cruel capitalism is all about. It is the law of the jungle out there and if you don't stand out you are basically nobody or you live as hobo metaphorically for the rest of your life. See this film , it is astonishing.

i have read that too and it is an interesting story, but rings hollow. It is hard to believe that at that time, Alex Baldwin was considered to have more star power than Al Pacino, Jack Lemon, Kevin Spacey, Ed Harris - or even Jonathan Price.

This scene wasn't originally in the script or the original stage-play. It was written in just for Alec Baldwin. The studio was under contract to put him in a certain number of movies within a specific time period, as in say 3 films in 5 years, or something like that. This scene with Alec was written in here specifically to fulfill the contract, which is why you never see him again.
And it's the best scene in the film.

These guys waited their whole lives for a part this perfect. Mamet delivered. They were so impressed with each other's work here, that on days they weren't scheduled to work, they showed up anyway to watch their fellow actors' work, not out of respect, rather out of curiosity and pleasure. I worked in sales in my early 20's, and if given the choice, I never will again. I had a tough sales manager who talked big but never did anything meaningful to train any of us on how to ACTUALLY close a deal or do something with a lead. As other comments have said, and in this movie clip Bladwin's character claims he could make $X tonight with the resources they have. My response to such bull shit was always, okay, show me... show us... teach us so we know how to and make you proud rather than you just talking a big game to make yourself feel better. You know what movie showed that? The Wolf of Wallstreet. He wrote a script and taught his team.
It reminds me of the line I read long ago, "What if we train our employees and they leave?"
The reply? "What if we don't train them and they stay?"
Also, something that helped me decide to leave was the other great advice, "You are either working to fulfill your own dream, or helping somebody else fulfill theirs."

@@TrippFink - You are wrong on so many levels. I will try to keep it short, but the most successful stories of great organizations share a common thread:
You train, support and build your team. As I edited into my original comment, we see this in The Wolf of Wallstreet when he trains his people, gives them a script and helps them all becomes a success.
From business to sorts franchises, to the history of nation building, the story remains the same.
When the US accepted the surrender of Japan, they stayed and helped to rebuild the nation. They did the same in Western Europe. Meanwhile, they DIDN'T do that after 9/11 and left both Iraq and Afghanistan with their tails between their legs and the nations in chaos. Go watch Jon Oliver's coverage of it and the shit show that was left behind. Nothing that was done left the nation as a self sufficient power.
In my free time, I have helped build an American Football team in South America. More than that, I helped build an entire league and organization (look at my profile picture). We began with 18 guys throwing a rubber football around at the park in 2012 and by 2018 we were involved in amateur international events with Mexico, Brazil, Panama and other nations. I didn't just focus on my team. I held clinics for officiating, position coaching, tactics and so forth. I had material translated into Spanish and taught various methods and concepts so teams and coaches could choose for themselves which they liked best. Before Covid hit, we had 12 teams and we're getting local sponsorships for games. I couldn't have done it by myself, as those many great people all did their part and wanted to learn, but I led the charge to teach them. To take an interest in them.
My sister began at the plumbing company she now manages as an office assistant. She was trained how to do her job and took interest in how to take on more responsibilities. Once she was promoted to a position of leadership and able to take important decisions, she explained to the owner that the staff of trained plumbers are getting old and nearing retirement without young blood to replace them. Under her leadership, the company began investing in training and certification for young plumbers and they have begun to expand within her state despite the difficulty of covid, because everyone needs a plumber, maybe more with everyone at home all the time. By investing in their staff and also making sure they train up people who can run the offices of other locations and those people know how to train their staff, they have seen a lot of success over these last 5 years and growing.
I can go on and on.
Your backwards thinking is why failures fail. You don't hire people to solve your problems. Rising tides lift all ships. Their success is your success.

It’s not the customers getting screwed at a dealership or by a call center, it’s the sales people. They’re fed crap like this and have the idea of Rolex’s and BMW’s dangled in front of them to make them work harder. They’re commission only and when they finally have to quit it’s no big deal because the house keeps the business. You get sold at the interview that their top guy makes 250k but they don’t tell you he gets the best leads, you get garbage. Granted he is also a good sales person, but it’s not an even playing field. I had a couple of these jobs, I know. My theory is Blake is an ex salesman who started making motivational speeches when he realized there was no money in sales. The brass balls prop gives this away. Plus his speech is a sort of template that he adjusts accordingly, but still has a generic feel to it.
In effect, Blake is the salesmen TO salesmen: telling them they can have the American dream and get rich if only they would try harder.

That's correct, although it was only one lead. One the one hand, it was a bit of a catch 22 - can't close with bad leads, can't get the good leads without closing. On the other, Alec Baldwin's character was saying that if you *really* wanted it, you'd dig deep and somehow figure out a way to close even with shit leads. And then you'll have proven yourself worthy of the GG leads.

  • @patrickgavin3850
    @patrickgavin3850 6 років тому +5

Lucas, you are correct to point out this is satire, but I think you misidentify the playwright's satirical intention. At the beginning of the scene Moss says, "The rich get richer, that's the rule of the land." This scene is an attack on an aspect of capitalism.
Take for instance the prizes of the sales contest. The winner get's a sick car (symbolizing the rich and their haul). Second place gets a set of steak knives (representing the middle class and their hilariously incommensurate haul). Third prize is "you're fired" (representing the loser, the working poor, the Willy Lomans).
Furthermore, consider the Glen Garry ledes. These premium, untapped leads, which will presumably put the salesman in contact with a person who actually may want to buy something, are only given to the salesman who WINS the contest. A contrarian might say that a struggling salesman might benefit from a layup to boost their confidence and commission.
But that's the beauty of art. I believe Mamet's intention was the satire I laid out above, but Lucas above can take his own meaning/validation from the same scene. Any way you slice it this is a fantastic scene. One the most memorable ever for me. If it weren't for all the foul language I'd love to show it to students of high school age.

    • @patrickgavin3850
      @patrickgavin3850 6 років тому

I should add that I, for one, do NOT subscribe to Mamet's anti-capitalist point of view. (For that matter I bet Mamet himself has evolved since this play/film came out.) I just recognize that this was his satirical intentions with this scene.

After a day or two the jeweler call me back and tells me that it would be $350 to fix the watch. This also sets up the scene later on when we see Richard Roma in action -- the deal is basically closed although the guy wants to back out of it and Williamson ruins it. Roma was going to immoral lengths to close the deal -- doing exactly what Baldwin was saying in this speech -- only to be be foiled by his novice boss. Notice Roma isn't in this scene either. He doesn't need this speech. He lives this speech.
