Well, they had to leave Pacino's character (roma) out of this scene in order for Baldwin's character to shine without being interrupted...because there is no way Roma would just sit there and take the insults.
Well that and Roma's character was too good of a salesman to be in that room. He was too busy closing fools while those deadbeats were getting their brains beat in. The only way he's in that room is if he's as bad as they are.

Alec is hilarious in his interviews recounting how pissed people get seeing this play in the theater and not seeing this scene because it was written specially for the film version.

Back in the early 90s I worked for a timeshare sales office located right across the street from the Mall of America selling "vacation ownership" at Breezy Point, MN. We were actually shown this speech on videotape during a sales meeting, in order to "motivate" us. None of us ever closed a Patel, either.
I was a subcontractor at a big window company in metro Detroit, the salesman would meet around noon in a conference room and the would play this part every day over speakers to the salesman.
Except Blake wouldn't be directing it at Roma. In fact, if Roma showed up halfway through, Blake would probably give him one or two of the Glengarry leads in front of everyone just to hammer the point home.
Despite what Williamson said, Roma was never going to be a part of that meeting. The others needed motivation to get right or get gone. Roma was still in good standing.

35 years ago I was cold calling in a similar type boiler room for phone systems when the Bell system first broke up, in NYC. ANYBODY who thinks this isn't real...has never been there. Mamet is a genius, he's been there. This is America in a nut shell.
yeah I used to sell cars back in the 80's. yes there were sales meetings like this. But I learned that a person needs to motivate themselves and not respond to verbal abuse like this.
First of all this isn’t a boiler room. These guys are in home sales not phone sales. Some aspects are very accurate (“no one can close a Patel” “you let her talk to her lawyer”) others aren’t (Roma monologue) ABC is very outdated training.

I tried phone sales in 1978, right after I got out of the Air Force. I couldn't sell a bucket of water to someone that was on fire. I made 50 bucks in two weeks and was fired.
Yeah, alot of people can't be good salesmen....but some are just good at it. You know they are trying to sell you something but they get you to buy anyway. It really is an art...that and a lack of conscience to have your entire MO "just get them to sign"

My friend was a top pharmaceuticals rep. The things he had to do to make a sale inclduing renting an entire movie theater when Star Wars: The Phantom Menace debuted. Physicians/Clients presumably got in free.

I thumbed you up because I tell people to watch Malice, just for the God complex speech at the deposition. I think Alec believed he WAS a surgeon and a brilliant one at that.
I like to imagine that this character always has those brass balls banging around in his briefcase, and he constantly pulls them out saying to everyone that it takes brass balls to sell real estate.
This scene was not in the original stage play, Mamet wrote this specifically for Baldwin so he could be part of this remarkable cast. You’ll notice Mamet didn’t write a gun into this scene so we can keep watching these great actors 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was doing sales when this movie came out. It was a tough job because nothing came easy. This movie was so depressing. Yes it's well done and probably the best for portrayal of Motivation by motivating guy. But let's just say overtime I found a new career I am now a family doctor.
There is NOTHING motivational about the speech. Its nothing but a beat down speech meant to degrade everyone. There is not ONE training tip in the speech. not one.

The top salesman in the team (Al Pacino character) wasn’t in the meeting because like most successful salespeople they put more pressure on themselves than the Baldwin character could ever do. The guys in the room aren’t valued by their employer and sadly the “third place you’re fired” reference is standard within many sales organisations nowadays where the bottom 5-10% of staff are subject to an annual cull (reduction in force).

As a person who's been in sales there are such things as bad leads you can't take somebody who's brain dead like Alec Baldwin style of salesman and put him in the ghetto of north Saint Louis and expect him to pull money out of it, never has happen in never will... As a matter of fact I've had this boss let acts just like Alec Baldwin before and he was the boss who sent me to the ghetto in Saint Louis I was there for a couple days and then he wondered why hadn't made a single penny then he decides to go down there for a week himself and didn't pull out one sale, and hes the best of the Tri-state area!!! He was purposely written out of this scene. The rest of the sales agents sat there, listened to what he was saying, and took his abuse, thereby making this the best scene (IMO)in the movie. The Pacino character, on the other hand, would've told this guy to F off, would not have sat there quietly, and would have given it right back to the Baldwin character. David Mamet certainly knows what he's doing.
Good thing for Alec, as Al would have tore him to shreds and eaten him with balsamic vinegar dressing! NO ONE can scream/yell better than Mr. Pacino! (Ray Liotta is a close second).
I sold Life Insurance for 10 years. I loved it, the competition with my fellow sales people was intense. Even better when I did well and they did badly!
I have been in sales off and on my entire life and I have run into people like the character played by Alec Baldwin. Also, the role that Al Pacino plays must have been researched very well. There are guys just like that out there in the "sales" world. I too would have walked on that meeting - no one could be so desperate to have to sit in a meeting like that. Too many other decent opportunities out there!

If anybody thinks this isn`t real, this shits too crazy to happen in real life, you`ve never been in à real sales gig. I found myself in this racket, right out of high school. started from the bottom, like the street rat I was back in the day, early 20s, literally had NOTHING in my life, sometimes i`d go to bed thinking, if this was all there was to life, I didn`t wanna live out the rest of it, seriously.... I was talked to like this for years early on back in those days, almost every morning.... Brutally beaten up psychologically, built up from the ground up, became quite the monster, a warrior that never took no for an answer, not on my sits... When I didn`t sell, when I couldn`t close, I didn`t eat. my life was that simple back then, I had no salary, no basic pay, no minimum wage.... I worked HARD for every dollar. For me sales was a war , me vs all of them, I destroyed anyone keeping me from achieving my goals (very important to set goals in life, little ones - big ones, write em all down, imagine it over and over again, dream about em, let it be a plague in your life, never stop thinking about em) For me, that meant being ruthless, greedy, despicable... My boss would have a big board up in the office back in those days, your sales figures and income were posted on a big wall, updated daily by the managers for everyone to see. So we all knew each others successes, we knew when people were failing, starving etc etc, the boss used the board as a motivator, he wanted everyone to know who the losers in the office were, and the winners to aspire to. Most ppl couldn`t handle it. We had MEGA turn over, some people wouldn`t last a day in training... I was one of the best by the time I was 25, took years to master the art of selling for me, most people can`t do it, can`t handle the stress, they don`t have the right temperament for the job. Today, I`m 38. semi-retired, fancy cars, luxury cars, fast cars, got em all, the house, everything really... put your mind into something, commit to something completely, and you will succeed, guaranteed, in anything you do with your life, fitness, work, family etc... Thats what I teach young people now when they ask me about the sales gig, about running a company, start-ups etc.... most of the time I`m wasting my time, kids today can`t fucking toast bread let alone survive running their own businesses, pathetic really when I look at how kids are today.... anyways thats my rant, hope you enjoyed.
I used to train call centers. Yes I took those annoying scripts and tore them up. I trained people to realize that they are imposing on someone’s valuable time and asking them for money to boot. You have one chance to offer them your product , grab their attention and secure the sale whilst gaining their loyalty and growing your pipeline with referrals and return clients. Part of my “homework” was I told everyone on day one (3 day workshop”) to watch this movie and Boiler Room. Then ask them , do you “sell” or do you create a relationship that is valuable to both parties? This is the difference between then and now.
Such a great movie. I will never forget watching this on BRAVO for the first time, switching channels and coming in right at the beginning of Alec Baldwin's scene. I was sold. Jack Lemmon's performance of his lifetime.

Jack Lemmon role is heartbreaking because he’s living the role of a salesman but he’s pushing aside family issues and to see this old man resort to greedy politics.the line where Shelly is fixing to go turn him and he’s says “daughter” is the cool reality of this business and the look on lemonade face the realization of self respect and what he’s willing to do to get those leads and make that sale.
A stellar cast with a script full of golden dialogue. Easily in the top 5 movies of all time. I tell people who are thinking of getting into sales to watch this before they make their mind up. I've been in I.T. Software for 19 years & this movie still resonates powerfully. *_This isn't a movie but more of a documentary of what 'sales' is like_* It doesn't matter if its real-estate, cars or software, this is what the reality is. I.T is a brutal game full of sociopaths, wanna-be alpha males and people well past their prime still hanging on for that last 'big whale' account. It's the stuff of nightmares & dreams but this movie is a classic expose into the real world. I've heard the "if you think this abuse.." speech too many times to list, well, at least since this movie came out that's for sure. I can list fellow coworkers from this film's character list with my eyes closed. I'm sure we all can.
JOSHUA LAMBERT got the same speech from the owner of the dealership I worked at when I was 20. Some old geezer came on the lot with a walker and oxygen tank and I let him go. I didn’t know what to think or say. Just stood there quiet and confused. Quit as soon as I finished the year and keyed some cars before I left. Fuck that guy.

I was in sales for over 15 years and I have met and worked for bully sales managers like this. These guys are all alike "Look at my Rolex" "Look at my new car" blah blah blah I once worked for a sales manager who filed bankruptcy TWICE trying to keep up the BS Image. Sales guys and Sales Managers are notorious for this. My advice.... Don't go into sales... Don't buy into the hype of all these get rich motivational speakers.. Get a real profession you can feel good about
I've dealt with the Baldwin characters in the past. They all share some things in common. 1. They live in a financial house of cards. When it collapses, it's a catastrophe. 2. They have failed marriages. They're lousy dads and their kids hate them. 3. They have no friends. None. Zero. Zip. Nil. Null. 4. When the money runs out, and it always does, they end up working at a third-rate casino dealing Blackjack. 5. They die young.

My friend was a top pharmaceuticals rep. The things he had to do to make a sale inclduing renting an entire movie theater when Star Wars: The Phantom Menace debuted. Physicians/Clients presumably got in free.

For instance, Al Pacino picks up subtley on the suppressed homosexuality of his client played by famed actor Jonathan Pryce. Wow!

As a matter of fact I've had this boss let acts just like Alec Baldwin before and he was the boss who sent me to the ghetto in Saint Louis I was there for a couple days and then he wondered why hadn't made a single penny then he decides to go down there for a week himself and didn't pull out one sale, and hes the best of the Tri-state area!!!

This scene was not in the original stage play, Mamet wrote this specifically for Baldwin so he could be part of this remarkable cast. You’ll notice Mamet didn’t write a gun into this scene so we can keep watching these great actors 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was doing sales when this movie came out. It was a tough job because nothing came easy. This movie was so depressing. Yes it's well done and probably the best for portrayal of Motivation by motivating guy. But let's just say overtime I found a new career I am now a family doctor.

The guys in the room aren’t valued by their employer and sadly the “third place you’re fired” reference is standard within many sales organisations nowadays where the bottom 5-10% of staff are subject to an annual cull (reduction in force).

Pacino is not in the scene because he is out on a sales call. Having a drink with a client.
He was purposely written out of this scene. The rest of the sales agents sat there, listened to what he was saying, and took his abuse, thereby making this the best scene (IMO)in the movie. The Pacino character, on the other hand, would've told this guy to F off, would not have sat there quietly, and would have given it right back to the Baldwin character. David Mamet certainly knows what he's doing.
Good thing for Alec, as Al would have tore him to shreds and eaten him with balsamic vinegar dressing! NO ONE can scream/yell better than Mr. Pacino! (Ray Liotta is a close second).

I have been in sales off and on my entire life and I have run into people like the character played by Alec Baldwin. Also, the role that Al Pacino plays must have been researched very well. There are guys just like that out there in the "sales" world. I too would have walked on that meeting - no one could be so desperate to have to sit in a meeting like that. Too many other decent opportunities out there!
I always watch this when I need motivation for my business, it works like a charm! Damn great cast, and Alec owned it!

A million great scenes by gifted actors in this movie. Great, no doubt, but this is just one of them. Jack Lemmon is the best actor I've ever seen.
If anybody thinks this isn`t real, this shits too crazy to happen in real life, you`ve never been in à real sales gig. I found myself in this racket, right out of high school. started from the bottom, like the street rat I was back in the day, early 20s, literally had NOTHING in my life, sometimes i`d go to bed thinking, if this was all there was to life, I didn`t wanna live out the rest of it, seriously.... I was talked to like this for years early on back in those days, almost every morning.... Brutally beaten up psychologically, built up from the ground up, became quite the monster, a warrior that never took no for an answer, not on my sits... When I didn`t sell, when I couldn`t close, I didn`t eat. my life was that simple back then, I had no salary, no basic pay, no minimum wage.... I worked HARD for every dollar. For me sales was a war , me vs all of them, I destroyed anyone keeping me from achieving my goals (very important to set goals in life, little ones - big ones, write em all down, imagine it over and over again, dream about em, let it be a plague in your life, never stop thinking about em) For me, that meant being ruthless, greedy, despicable... My boss would have a big board up in the office back in those days, your sales figures and income were posted on a big wall, updated daily by the managers for everyone to see. So we all knew each others successes, we knew when people were failing, starving etc etc, the boss used the board as a motivator, he wanted everyone to know who the losers in the office were, and the winners to aspire to. Most ppl couldn`t handle it. We had MEGA turn over, some people wouldn`t last a day in training... I was one of the best by the time I was 25, took years to master the art of selling for me, most people can`t do it, can`t handle the stress, they don`t have the right temperament for the job. Today, I`m 38. semi-retired, fancy cars, luxury cars, fast cars, got em all, the house, everything really... put your mind into something, commit to something completely, and you will succeed, guaranteed, in anything you do with your life, fitness, work, family etc... Thats what I teach young people now when they ask me about the sales gig, about running a company, start-ups etc.... most of the time I`m wasting my time, kids today can`t fucking toast bread let alone survive running their own businesses, pathetic really when I look at how kids are today.... anyways thats my rant, hope you enjoyed.

I used to train call centers. Yes I took those annoying scripts and tore them up. I trained people to realize that they are imposing on someone’s valuable time and asking them for money to boot. You have one chance to offer them your product , grab their attention and secure the sale whilst gaining their loyalty and growing your pipeline with referrals and return clients.
Part of my “homework” was I told everyone on day one (3 day workshop”) to watch this movie and Boiler Room. Then ask them , do you “sell” or do you create a relationship that is valuable to both parties? This is the difference between then and now.

Jack Lemmon role is heartbreaking because he’s living the role of a salesman but he’s pushing aside family issues and to see this old man resort to greedy politics.the line where Shelly is fixing to go turn him and he’s says “daughter” is the cool reality of this business and the look on lemonade face the realization of self respect and what he’s willing to do to get those leads and make that sale.

This is my favorite movie, period.
A stellar cast with a script full of golden dialogue. Easily in the top 5 movies of all time. I tell people who are thinking of getting into sales to watch this before they make their mind up. I've been in I.T. Software for 19 years & this movie still resonates powerfully. *_This isn't a movie but more of a documentary of what 'sales' is like_* It doesn't matter if its real-estate, cars or software, this is what the reality is. I.T is a brutal game full of sociopaths, wanna-be alpha males and people well past their prime still hanging on for that last 'big whale' account. It's the stuff of nightmares & dreams but this movie is a classic expose into the real world. I've heard the "if you think this abuse.." speech too many times to list, well, at least since this movie came out that's for sure. I can list fellow coworkers from this film's character list with my eyes closed. I'm sure we all can.

I've dealt with the Baldwin characters in the past. They all share some things in common. 1. They live in a financial house of cards. When it collapses, it's a catastrophe. 2. They have failed marriages. They're lousy dads and their kids hate them. 3. They have no friends. None. Zero. Zip. Nil. Null. 4. When the money runs out, and it always does, they end up working at a third-rate casino dealing Blackjack. 5. They die young.
This was the movie -- the scene -- that made me take Alec Baldwin seriously. Just a little bit of talent in that room.
