Ken, there are so many things you missed about our beautiful neighborhood. If you had started on the Avenue and not the blocks you would have seen the stores, bars/restaurants the awesome parks and public walking, biking paths. Our streets are finally being fixed from Super Storm Sandy, VERY slowly but it's getting done. We are a proud diverse community. Had you had slowed down, packed a lunch to eat on one of our many benches and or taken a walk in the wetlands maybe you could have gotten more then potholes 😆. But thank you for riding on through our beloved little part of NYC.
Do you know that we watch each of your video? 😂 We love it and we really think that you are a nice kind person. Lots of love from west Poland, Poznań! :)
Great Video, I lived in Gerritsen Beach, you rode right past my old house on Cyrus Ave. which is considered the OLD SECTION, so much has changed in the area, all the houses use to be bungalows, and look at them now. Miss my home town so much.
Next time you're in Sheephead Bay please visit Emmons Avenue - famous for its many clam houses. When you grow up in Brooklyn like I did, you eat sea food, especially clams --- yum! At about 19:55 you said "this does not look like NYC, folks" --- so true! Looked more like South St Paul, MN last year when the city worked on its old pipe lines and streets. Thanks for sharing.
Grew up near Kings highway. That was mud wood. Sheepshead bay is around ave U and i very beautiful area. Had friends in gerritsin beach. Cute area too. Lived in sheepshead bay for 28 years till I went to long island
Your bike tour from George Washington Bridge passing NJ made me understand the place someone I know live. It gives me a whole new perspective, thanks to you. You don't realise that. That was the best bicycle youtube tour ride for me to have watched.
Hey AK, I always enjoy your walking riding videos. Although, I'm not a native I learn something new with every tour! NY has a interesting and informative history. Have a safe ride. Thank you!✌🏾🚴♀️
I grew up in the area. The streets have always been bad down there. The reason the streets are so narrow is that the Beach was originally a summer bungalow community. And then people started living there year round (sorta like City Island in the Bronx). The houses closest to the water have a tendency to flood .... Sometime in the early to mid 1960's, there was a flood and we had to be carried out of the house. My nana's house was below the road.....
Another great video....To answer your question “would I live there” my answer is no, I have to be able to walk to restaurants and shopping....although it is very nice and quiet....Thank you again.....💃🏽💃🏽
Good morning and Hello From Orlando Florida!! The roads are all busted up did look like it was a little uncomfortable to ride on. tiny dogs think they are so much bigger than they really are but the bite still hurts. Thanks for sharing "Cool Beans"
great video very informative great narration enjoyed very much i recommend everyboddy to subscribe please keep narrating we learn so much about an area thru you thank so much russ.
Always surprises me that in most US suburbs all the retail is bunched up together away from residential neighourbhoods. Must be strict zoning laws because otherwise it doesn't make sense to me.
@@professional.commentator This neighborhood was developed on filled in marshland in the early 1920s. To the best of jy knowledge, the houses in the "New Section" were starting to be completed by 1923. Crime was not even a concept for this area back then. Doors were left unlocked. Many families, if not most, did not own a car, and those that did owned only one. Most women stayed home to raise their children and most did not have a drivers license. If they needed to go shopping they could pull their shopping cart up to them avenue. It's an old concept; it's called community.
The NYC Borough of Brooklyn, AKA Kings County, is THE second most densely populated county in the entire United States of America. It houses 2.7 million people within 69.5 square miles. Until 1898 it was a separate City. If it still were the City of Brooklyn, it would be the 3rd largest city in the country. We don't consider it to be a "suburb."
Considering moving to this area (on bartlett place). Does anyone know if the streets flood after heavy rain or is flooding only an issue after a hurricane?
Ken, thanks for showing us this hood. I have never been to Gerritsen Beach area. It is quiet.! However it is quite a bit too small and packed in for my taste. Also as you say, there are no stores within walking distance,, not good.
Very unique neighborhood. Definitely away from city life (although that is the city) it is very nice community with beautiful homes. Wished I could've seen the Marina. Love the neighborhood beach. But not my style lol. Doesn't take nothing away bc who knows if I ever end up living there. But I've always loved living walking distance from bodegas, grocery stores, shopping and eating. I need those things close to me 👍

This is an area of Brooklyn where a car is definitely a necessity. Nice homes, quiet area. Enjoyed the ride, AK!
cars are bad for the environment. shame on you judith for promoting global warming
@Runner Girl let me guess you support global warming as well right?
@@eddiew2325 You don't know me, therefore you have no right to accuse me of ANYTHING, PERIOD! Just go sit down somewhere and chill out.
@Runner Girl Thanks for having my back, my friend. He's trying to start something...he'd better cut it out.

Yes I would love it
When I used to attend P.S. 277 in the early 80's the area wasn't too kind to my type.
I work nearby. Very racist.

this trend started in bullshit new york first. then everyone else followed suit..
I think it's also because of safety. If a store was in the middle of nowhere it wouldn't be safe if there was a gang in town.

Believe me its not that quite and there's plenty of stores walking distance
well done.
Nice😉👍
We who grew up near it pronounced it "Avineeyoo".
Nice 👍
Nice wonderful 🥰🥰
What bike do you have?
It's one of those Beach's that only those who live there can easily find. Ha!
That beach is nasty there’s burnt cars underneath you people have dumped bodies there it’s a very deceiving place it’s not nice
Interesting video.
Power lines like in south Asia. Why they don't dig them underground like in Europe?
They do that in Manhattan
Growing up In the sheepshead bay housing projects we know Gerritsen beach as a racist “sundown” town.
And where you lived was not safe for white people ,most of the crime came from your area not Gerritsen Beach !!!!!
The Nostrand NYCHA projects are looking like a sundown place in their own way. I just don't know why. They weren't like that years ago.
Park Min-Ha 🇫🇷
That was rude he stopped and crossed right in front of you with his red scooter.
