- From the Archives is a series where we explore unique instruments and items from our company archives. In this episode, Paul Reed Smith and Marc Quigley explore a pre-factory build known as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
This 27-fret guitar is full of firsts, featuring uniquely modified pickups, extra tall hand-milled frets, and the first example of PRS’s iconic headstock shape. Be sure to stick around for the end of the episode, where PRS Product Specialist Bryan Ewald plays the Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Paul unearths his original drawing for the build.

Pauls company involvement is absolutely incredible. He has so many projects going on, but the fact that he remembers them all means that he takes EVERYTHING seriously. He's amazing
Paul is the Paul in Paul Reed Smith, and you can tell because he takes great pride in his work. Finest guitars ever.
Incredible Guitar - please build more of them!
Hmmm...
That’s one of the thickest tones I’ve ever heard. Paul and Brian are an amazing combination!
Thick yet screaming. Amazing tone
Love it
How incredible would it be to be locked in the 'vault' and be able to play everything in there!
At this rate, we're never going to see enough of the ones in there, and I'll bet there are some real holy grail guitars locked away.
Just an hour each guitar....
In the case of PRS, the hype is real. In my opinion PRS is the maker of the most beautiful, versatile, playable and amazing sounding guitars on the market.
Without a doubt. Everything made by the other two main companies pale in comparison.
I have a S2 single cut. It seems like every guitar they make is unique. Plability and beauty.
@@flybynight1929 esp fender nowadays, they hardly innovate. Gibson tried to with electronics, robotuners and dipswitches
Most of us use the guitar to express our art, but to Paul Reed Smith, the guitar is the expression of his art. It’s beautiful
That jam was amazing! Pure and beautiful tone! This is why PRS is the best guitar company. Even the experimental guitars in their early history stands against the test of time and ages like wine. Their production has just gotten better since then too.
Yes, this is PRS sound, and it's the sound I like. My first PRS was a S2 Custom 24 10 years ago. And I recently got Private Stock, and it's great. I can't express it in words. Thank you Paul.
I was just admiring the guitar's craftsmanship and aesthetics, and then BOOM - that TONE!!!! Gorgeous!
Those "P90's" are the truth. They sound phenomenal. This is the divulgence of how a guitar maker evolved over time. What an exceptional journey you've had Paul.
I'm on the lower end of a fixed income! My God how I dream to have one of those Modern Eagles hand picked by the most wonderful guitar maker there is. It's always been part of my wish list. I only stand 4'9" but I sure dream big. lol! Truthfully, Medicaid doesn't allow me to own anything higher than $2,000 in total assets! Dear Sir you make so many wonderful guitars. Watching what you've made in your years keeps my dream alive. Dreams are what keeps you living so thank you very much!
Why the hell didn't this guitar ever hit production? What a majestic piece of art
Love these videos, this should be like a weekly thing on the channel. Looking forward to see Marc and Paul discuss the first "bird" guitar.
a few p90 moments to be heard for sure in the little Ewald jam. Indeed per the drawing , those tuners are still around, on my 35 anniversary S2. That's a nice guitar Paul, fine job.
Paul's knowledge is insurmountable, such a clever guy, a pioneer in the industry 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Can we just lock them in there and do everything on the shelves? These videos are incredible.
Love Paul and his amazing company. PRS is the greatest Guitar and listening to Paul is the best. Keep it coming Paul
I was telling my wife last night what I love about these instruments is that they INSPIRE me when I play them. I find I'm writing so many cool lessons (I'm a guitar trainer) for my students on my McCarty 245 soapbar. Some time this year Lord Willing I will be getting a Core 594 Singlecut and I will be so INSPIRED then!
Wow that thing sounds amazing definitely should put out something that's modeled after that. That's a pretty unique sound, another reason PRS is the best
Wow that tone good Lord.
Wow! What a magnificent work of art. Sounds as great as it looks. PRS makes the finest guitars on the planet.
Guitar sounds awesome. Good player, obviously.
Wow, the guitar and that tone is fantastic!
Very interesting geetar! Their are times i wanted a ton of frets. The tone of this beast is awesome! Not sure if its the p-90's or the amp and or pedals or a mixture of all 3 but man tone for days!! Good stuff Paul and fam!! Lets see a reissue of this?..Peeps would buy it i'm sure! Different colors! Sorcerer's apprentice series?! Why not?..Rock on!!
From the first high gain note of that solo I could recognize the quintessential PRS tone.
Hey Paul! Here's my 1990 Custom24 10" Top! 32 years of playing and it gets better every year! Enjoy : @
I really enjoy this series, please do more!
I loved the color of the guitar, the dark blue on the quilted maple is just stunning. When Brian digs in and starts with the melody, the breadth of the tone just blew me away. What an amazing instrument, thanks for sharing this.
I was lucky to see a PRS exhibit at a small museum in Maryland years ago, in which many of the early instruments, including this one, were on display.
Great history on that guitar, and wow, that lead sound is unbelievably good!
Holy Jesus, that sound has some character to it!!! Wow!!!
It’s like a bass player setup their perfect pickup layout. That’s a really common doubles bridge setup for cutting thru with a ton of power. You can feel it, jumps off to ur fingers when you play pickups like that in series.
That guitar sounds sensational, instantly caught me ear
Amazing company, such young yet rich in history. I was GASing for custom since I was a teenager in mid 90's. Finally got my first one on my 40th and a second one few months later. I'm starting to think about a new addition to the family and no surprise it's gonna be another PRS. Keep up a good job, team
Love these episodes!! So fascinating 😍🎸
Ah that sound is so comforting. It brings me a great sense of calm. Exquisite videos as always, PRS.
Paul I wish you'd make a production model with these pickups!
From the Archives is one of my favorite series on YT. Thanks PRS!
Please make more videos like this. Awesome. Love to see PRS history by the man himself. 🔥🔥❤
Damn.. Paul, imitation is the greatest form of flattery, I want to build one like this. Love the sound!
I love this! That bridge pickup - wow!
Cool! That pickup configuration is awesome!
WOW that sounds incredible.
This is definitely a great episode.
Sounds magnificent!
Great playing too.
Another masterpiece from the vault!!
I'd totally have one of these. I'm a p90 addict and have often wanted that pickup config
This was excellent. Thanks for sharing this. I love the thought process. Looking forward to the next…
More of these please!
WAY cool , love that bridge pickup . P90's are the best~
Just simply amazing, a very beautifull guitar, this should be for sale.
I liked the Lute explanation Paul, thanks for that I always wondered why they were like that.
Now THAT'S a lead tone 10:03 !!!
Sorcerer’s Apprentice indeed!
Magical.
So cool watching this stuff!
What an awesome guitar!!
Well done Marc and crew! ~ Linus
I’d love to see y’all turn that room of guitars into an interactive museum at the factory, people can come see, tour, and play the history of PRS
What a treat! Thanks for this video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh, man the tone on that one! Damn.
Good show. Thanks!
I love the idea of humbucker p90s
That guitar sounds really great.
Epic tone
Did not know there was a humbucker p90 out there but its the only thing i want now 😮😮😮
8:39 Nice! I had to do the same thing a few months ago for one of my guitars. I was adding clear plastic covers. I couldn't find a jack plate that matched my screw holes so I made one out of a decking screw container.
Great upload. Thanks.
Mr. Smith...what a great guy!!!!
to be in that room . man oh man . that would be a holy experience
Sounds great!
I really liked the tone of that guitar.
1982: "Sure you can have an extended scale, 27 fretter"
2021: "No you cant have a core 7 string or baritone"
To be fair it was more of a custom shop back then.
For anything other than private stock, it is all about numbers. If they don't feel that they would get the desired return on investment of time and money, they won't do it. And if anyone has crunched the numbers, it's Paul.
8:07 I wish he would do this on newer models as well! It's such an eye catcher and the bridge feels like part of the guitar not something sticking out!
I just bought my first PRS… hollow body 2. Took me a minute but… I love it so much my wife is jealous.. now I wish I had just gone straight to the vault for a custom… soon Paul soon.
I miss the knob switching!! Bring it Back!!
I own a descendant of this guitar; 408. I’m proud of it.
I also own a 408. I don't compare to any other git I own. It has its own thing that I love.
Ninetybucker! Awesome. Please make a not as large version of that again.
FINALLY MORE ARCHIVES
I do really want one!!!!!! someday I'll be able to buy one! 🥲😭
Guitar sounds great
So two P-90s stuck together can make a humbucker!
We need a reissue… dayum
This is it
Listening to people when they speak and remember about what they are burning for
Some call it work, some call it Art, some call it engineering, some call it design, for others it may be farming, gardening, dancing
This here is just and example of love of life, maybe actually divinty in ways
I'm putting in my Private Stock order for a Custom 27 right now!
WOAAAHH FIRSTT
love PRS guitars!
fascinating
Thats Cool !!! Build it again :)
Paul is a treasure.
Tasteful playing by Brian. Wonder what amp he's playing thorough. It sounds really wonderful!
If Brian Ewald comments on here...how does this guitar play in the hand? Sounds really beautiful
theyp p90humbucker is really cool and unique
Missed the opportunity to play some Fantasia songs for the demo
It was discussed. Lawyers disapproved.
Double P90 as HB? Interesting! I've been contemplating taking the SD P-Rails concept to an extreme using a proper P90 and Strat single coil together in series/parallel or either "split". Want single coil split sounds? Use an actual single coil 😉
That is one amazingly beautiful guitar.
Got my SE Starla today and iam mindblown by how different it plays from any other guitar i ever had...I legit thought it wouldnt make that much of a difference but my god its night and day...i initially played a Cort x2 guitar and a pacifica 311 i know both of them are extreme cheap beginner guitars and i shouldnt compare them to the prs but damn the prs costs only 300€ more and plays like a whole new instrument. Amazing. I hope to afford a Core PRS someday.
That sounds terrific ! Love the history - keep it coming please.
I want one; like, a lot.
That tone...
What was the rig the sound sample was played through? Brilliant tone.
There's an early 80's PRS hanging in my local GC used room for stoopid money. They are asking $22,000 for that thing. It's black with these funky pin stripes that follow the outline of the body and meet at the bottom and curve back up to the bridge. Not even sure of the model but I want it sooo bad. It would be a keeper fur sure.
