Loved Roger's. Especially the bathrooms. They where so many and so accessible.
We walked through the pedways from our hotel. That was real nice. Oilers atmosphere was epic! We got to be in first row behind the glass. Very cool experience. We witnessed McDavid scoring his 60 goal top!
On my birthday Oct 29 last year. Bought me and my family tickets to saddledome to watch the game. We were third from the top.
Escalators they need... it's so steep to get to the top especially having to go through the mid section. But it was fun watching as an Oilers fan as we fist bumped all the Oilers guys in front of the flames fan haha.
Next game I'll go to will be on my next birthday at the stadium in Edmonton

The NHL best arenas to visit for lots of restaurants and bars, interesting character neighbourhoods and buzzy experiences are:
      - Edmonton (nicest building + outdoor rink with skate rentals!) (and probably most exciting team...)
      - Tampa Bay
      - Washington DC (neatest neighbourhood -- Chinatown)
      - Montreal (best fans -- like European soccer fans)
      - New York - MSG
      - Nashville (best live music bars - not kidding)
      - Las Vegas
Pick your favourite teams from that list and you'll have a blast.

I live in Edmonton, but I've been to the Saddledome for a Roughnecks lacrosse game. Saddledome definitely has that old-school charm about it, which if you're someone who's more nostalgic, is gonna appeal to you a bit more. But Rogers Place definitely has the edge amenity-wise. Given Rogers Place opened in 2016, and the Saddledome was built in `83, that's only natural.

NHL players have said that the Edmonton Oilers away locker room is the best in the league, which isn't surprising cause it was made recently. They're also known to have the best ice. Best player in the world too. They got a lot of things going for them lol.

I’m a massive oilers fan and been to over 30 games in rogers place and 3 in the dome…game experience in the dome was really good all three times…Rogers place is good too but a big Saturday night game it ramps up a lot. Amenities and experience of the building itself rogers place hands down is better. I felt filthy leaving the dome. Not being biased just honest. But i did like the food options and the cheaper prices the hour before game time at the dome. Love rogers place but you can feel the history and nostalgia of the dome. Go Oilers!

Rogers Place is a spectacle. It's a great place to go if you're looking for an experience on top of an event. It's a beautiful building and everything is state-of-the-art. It's becoming a trend league-wide, but that scoreboard is imposing and amazing. When I was there, it seemed like everything was a party. The music was loud which help improve the atmosphere. The biggest issue I have with it is that it seems to caters so much to the wealthy. It has seating for over 4,000 people in the various club/loge seating and that's not including the suites/boxes. Including the suites you're getting pretty close to half the building allocated to premium/luxury seating. One of the things I've heard from other people is that while it makes for better sightlines, the upper level is terrifyingly steep. My friend was a game and a guy fell down the stairs and apparently almost went over the top.
The Saddledome is a great place to watch a hockey game. The flamethrowers are cool, the atmosphere is great, and I feel like they know how to make the most of that building every time. Comparatively, it looks like a dungeon on the inside and the outer façade is dated. It was hinted at, but the concourse is cramped and the concession lines don't move fast enough. A lot of times if you don't leave your seat before the end of the period, you probably won't make it back in time for the start of the next one. People can knock the Saddledome all they want but I'm sure when they finally get a new building there's a lot of things about it that people are going to miss. I got to experience this first-hand here in Medicine Hat. The Medicine Hat Arena got replaced by the now Co-op Place in 2015. It is a better place to watch an event. The concourse is wider and you can, for the most part, still watch a game while you are walking around it, and there is a video scoreboard. Those are the main visible differences. The old barn was getting run-down and whether the ice would stay frozen come April was a bit of a toss up. But Co-op Place will never compare to The Arena in atmosphere. There is too much open air where fan noise goes to die. A packed barn of 4,006 at The Arena during the playoffs was putting out decibel levels over 100. I love Co-op Place but it's a case of you don't know what you've got until it's gone when it comes to atmosphere.

As someone who has been in both, I say Rogers Place is better (obi) but even though the Saddledome is basically dissolving, there are a few things I like about it. One thing I like about the saddledome is it's location. Perfectly placed in Stampede Park with lots of parking and makes a great look to Calgarys skyline. Roger's is also in a perfect spot in downtown Edmonton, but it also looks out of place with all the old building near it. On 104th Ave It's like "old restaurant, university, shiny arena, an off leash park, and back to old buildings". But there is ICE District near by.
But in terms of interior, obviously Rogers Place, the concourse is big with lots of bars while the Saddledomes concourses are very tight and the bathrooms are tiny. But I like Calgarys bowl more, atleast most of it. Even though Roger's has a ton of suites, it makes it feel like Crypto Arena in LA where the suites take away the esthetics. The Saddledome has 3000 more seats than Rogers but they do have the super high up spots where you can't see the scoreboard because of the roof shape.
But all in all, Rogers Place wins for looks, emedities, and technology. The Saddledome gets points for atmosphere, location, and bowl size, but it really needs to be replaced or heavely renovated.

Saddledome will always be iconic in Calgary and be a sad day if of when it gets demolished. The original Saddledome before it got renovated in 1995 used to have stairs in the concourses and had a larger lower bowl before luxury boxes we're installed. See sections on the one end still has all the original rows. Remember one building was designed in the early 1980s and that other being Rogers Place designed in the 2010s. Say whenever the Calgary Flames and the city get their you know what in gear. Calgary will have a better arena than Edmonton.

My guess is that to get a new arena built you need the municipal, provincial and federal governments to line up. These things tend to need multiple sources of government funding. When different levels of government are at odds with each other, getting to an agreement on cost sharing becomes more difficult. I live in Edmonton and hear that the Saddledome has fundemental design issues which make it far less suitable for live music. Plus they insisted the Oilers ownership invest $100M directly in nearby construction. (Ownership has instead seen 30X that much invested in their real estate, and counting.)
Calgary City Council (correctly, I believe) does not expect the current proposal to be as beneficial to Calgary in terms of surrounding development.

    • @MultiCappie
      @MultiCappie Рік тому +1

@@fantasticvoyage262 By the way, if you're interested at all in my estimation, Ottawa also should not expect "Edmonton type revitalisation" with their arena project. At over 800 metres walking distance from the nearest significant office towers, both Calgary and Ottawa's current proposals are too far away to synergise.
By contrast, Edmonton has *_17_* major office towers within 800 metres of the arena.
Arenas are full when office towers are empty, thus when neighbours, they very neatly share literally everything -- parkades, sidewalks, train systems, public washrooms -- but more interestingly, _restaurants, bars, cafes, hotel amenities, and retail visibility._ This is why Edmonton saw nearly 50 new eateries/drinkeries open up within two blocks of the arena until the eve' of the pandemic. This in-turn is why Edmonton is suddenly building condo towers all over Downtown, even during the last oil recession and even during the pandemic - suddenly there are lots of good places to eat/drink, and often lots of people around, which is synonymous with both fun and safety.
It even looks as if luxury retail is making a comeback in Downtown Edmonton, with The Helm opening last year a block South, and Henry Singer relocating to the Arena's doorstep -- and if you know anything about Edmonton, this is polar opposite from the trend which prevailed for the last 40 years. Small, but it's a start.
If Calgary has a brain (and it actually looks like this is possible) they will simply abandon the current proposal, and instead try to build the arena where Eaux Claires Market is. Ottawa is in tough though. The only low-price, arena-size real estate I see within walking distance of their office buildings is right next door to the Supreme Court, and I don't think they'll be welcome to that neighbourhood.
Interesting to me is that it looks like Saskatoon (of all places) could be on exactly the right track with their downtown arena proposal.

@@MultiCappie I don't know anything about Edmonton. Except that the Oilers arena and the whole neighborhood looks awesome. I just hope the Flames get something nice done too.

I can tell you from rogers place experience that the atmosphere when it’s a weekend game and also an important game is insane. They definitely crank it up an extra notch. I watched a battle of Alberta live on a Friday that Edmonton won and I’ve never seen a hockey atmosphere like that before. I do think you guys got a lesser game considering the day and considering Ottawa isn’t a big game for the oilers.

Not a lover of the Saddledome since day one. I loved when Calgary played in the old Corral and Edmonton in Rexall.

Unfair comparison, lol. Saddledome is trash inside, you tell its very old its like what the Coliseum was like. Rogers place and the development around it is amazing.

It was never going to be a fair comparison, which we mentioned right at the beginning, but that doesn't mean they can't still be compared. Both experiences were different and had different positives and negatives. It's not black and white.

Calgary is one of the worst places now because there is so many stabbings and at night in Calgary if you were walking back to your car or whatever very sketchy and The C train is very sketchy that is where all the stabbings are. By the way Calgary‘s Store for the flames 10/10 Edmonton’s 0/10 Way too big you have to have a tiny one

The saddledome was inferior from the time it opened because the acoustics are so bad in the saddledome. That’s why so many big name artists don’t perform there but have multiple shows in Edmonton
