    Wow. As an American I had a WHOLE different image of this. I had assumed it was a really long interstate highway tunnel that you drive through yourself and not a ferry crossed with a train. I'd been wondering about traffic jams, accidents, and how the switch to the opposite side of the road was handled, and all, but obviously this doesn't happen with this setup!

    • @cosmicusstardust3300

      Because the US is a car culture, if you want to get somewhere 99% of the time its by car. But in Europe and most of Asia public transport and walking dominate most of traveling.

      @@cosmicusstardust3300 Yeah, other than the Acela corridor (the line of cities from Washington DC to Boston), public transportation is not impressive and sometimes unsafe too. In all seriousness in some ways it’s more like a Third World country but with newer equipment and less overcrowding. I’ve heard it’s somewhat similar in Australia to here where car culture is dominant.

      I went on the EuroShuttle for the first time last week.
      It was the dullest travelling experience I've ever had.
      Just inside a steel tube for 40-odd minutes. Trains look tired. Bathroom facilities seemed like that of a 30 year old plane.
      Doors between carriages were often difficult to open too.
      Effective way to get to France but as interesting as as sitting in a box.

    This is so interesting. As an American, I had assumed that cars wouldl be driving in a 24 or so mile long tunnel. The thought of driving 24 miles in a tunnel freaks me out because I am slightly claustrophobic. But now knowing this is how it's done is way more comforting and makes much more sense for a whole bunch of reasons.

    • @OurWildHorizons
      @OurWildHorizons  Рік тому +9

      Definitely much safer this way, but we do have some crazy long mountain tunnels in Europe which are driven through. Mount Blanc tunnel comes to mind!

      Mount Blanc tunnel is 12 km long and two lanes with average speed of 60 km/h. The Channel tunnel is 50 km and only one lane. Because of the Tunnel effect the chance that people would get into a hypnotic state is very high. Probably leading to many accidents a day. Also it would take almost an hour to reach the other end. Not a great idea.
      That's why they use all kind of trucs to mitigate this in the longest car tunnel in the world ( Lærdalstunnelen in Norway, 25 km)

      Euro-Tunnel tubes have a big diameter (7,4 m), so I didn't feel claustrophobic at all, whenn I used it with an Eurostar train. Quite the contrary, my impression was that the train itself looked very small in the tube.

    Nice explainer! One tip I would add is that the machine to get tickets is quite far back from the boom gate. I remember the first time I did the trip I sat at the boom gate for like 5 minutes waiting for someone to come check my ticket and wondering why there was no one in that little office 😂 It was only when I reversed back that I noticed the little ticket machine thing which - as you say - is really low down!

      Back to 'Le Havre.' It means ''the harbour'' in British English or ''the port.'' Its inhabitants are known as Havrais or Havraises. It is a nice city. Seeing your name, you are from the European country of The Netherlands. You're Dutch. I don't like Scandinavian people because they are ice-cold, anti-social and think they are better than everybody. They find talking to people in public to be weird. Also they will not talking to you unless they know you and what you are talking to them about gives them value. I just keep to myself. I'll talk to people, if they act normal around me. I know The Netherlands isn't part of Scandinavia and I know some Europeans don't care what you think or what you are saying to them. Some will ignore you if you ask them a question on where to get to somewhere in Europe or anything. The French hate small talk and will avoid that. That's how some people are. Can't get upset about it. America is a terrible country with it's mass shootings and poor quality of life. I know countries outside of America have their problems and aren't far from perfect, but their problems aren't in the extreme like America's problems. ItsPlanB NL, you're not going to say anything, but I am just going to leave you some to read about. Ignore me or respond to me. I don't care. Got to much of that in the USA and Canada. Lol.

      I’m not sure but it was quite efficient so I don’t think you’d hold up traffic! You have to enter the details online beforehand so I guess that’s when any issues would be found! 😃

    Thank you for this, however, I thought you actually drove through the tunnel. Does it get confusing suddenly to be driving on the wrong side after leaving the train? Once aboard are passengers restricted to stay in their car? How is the toll charged? Size, weight or just a flat rate?

    • @miked1869
      @miked1869 2 роки тому +3

      It's been many years since I used the tunnel, but when I did you were free to get out of your car during the journey. Obviously you can't go far because you're still sealed into the train, but you could still at least stretch your legs.

      With the Eurotunnel and also the Eurostar, you do both countries Passport Control and Customs on one side of the channel. So when going from England to France it is done at Folkstone and when going from France to England it is done in Calais.

      Shortly after the tunnels opened there was an accident in the south tunnel I believe. The fire raged to over 1500 degrees C. The train and all vehicles aboard pretty much melted and were unrecognizable. Remarkably there were no fatalities but that particular tunnel was closed for over 6 months.

    There’s a really good video and a ‘true’ step by step guide that shows the euro tunnels pathetic attempt at signage. It’s no wonder people end up on car parks they don’t want to be in, and if everyone says oh it’s simplicity itself, then nothing will get better! They need a company like Amazon to streamline the process and traffic maze!
