Themepark Castmembers Collect a lot of Stuff- Ep 43 Confessions of a Theme Park Worker

  • When you work at a theme park, you tend to accumulate a lot of things- costumes, maps, brochures, souvenirs, and a lot more. It's pretty typical for cast members to keep and collect a lot of it. This is a look at just some of the things that I've collected over the years. There's a lot left out as well!
    A behind the scenes look at what a former worker at Disney World, Silver Dollar City, and Busch Gardens Florida experienced in his time working at the parks. From driving large safari trucks around live wild animals while cracking one silly joke after another, to spending 5 years as a photopass photographer at Walt Disney World and seeing and experiencing all sorts of things, to being a conductor and train robber on the famous Frisco Silver Dollar Line at Silver Dollar City. With 10 years of working in the parks, there's lost of stories to tell. Here is some of them...

    I find it pretty neat that you decided to keep all the old maps and stuff. It should be interesting to compare them throughout the years and see what's changed and what hasn't.

      SirWillow question I'm looking for a vest to put my pins on any recommendations

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +3

      I just use an old flannel one I bought years back. You'll want one with thick material since the pins can get very heavy. Mine with just the pins I have on it weighs probably close to 15-20 pounds. Maybe more. Make sure you've got a heavy duty hanger for it as well. I wouldn't wear mine- way to heavy and uncomfortable with all the pin backs. And in all honesty, if you're planning on wearing it to the park, I wouldn't. Besides the comfort and risk of losing pins, it makes you look, ummm, odd. :-) So find something that will look nice hanging on a wall with them. It's also why many people go with mounted boards or large felt books for them.

      SirWillow live actually seen some people with a large vest filled top to bottom it was crazy and could hear him walking with all the pins clashing lol 😂

I feel like I would thoroughly enjoy my job since I already love photography. Your channel is honestly my favorite right now because you have so much knowledge and it's all based around positivity, whereas most people post the same content as you but in a negative way. Thank you for sharing your stories and knowledge with us!

      And by the way, I don't think you're a hoarder! Keeping all that stuff is just a way to bring the nostalgia and memories you had when working at Disney World, Busch Gardens, and Silver Dollar City! I'm a hoarder too but I'm not ashamed! Cause every board game we played when we were kids, every stuffed animal I collected and bought over the years, everything I bought and own will pretty much stay with me for the long hall- because as they always say "They don't make stuff like this anymore" and because who knows when and if someone else would like a taste of what we did in the past.

    I folded my eyes and ears and I did not think ahead enough to preserve them, but I still have them! My collection is very similar. Only thing I was like wow about was that you kept all those tell a cast booklets!!!! I'd lose mine before I even got upstairs, but I never actually got to use one, so they weren't really a thing I cared about I guess lol

    OMG! A trip down memory lane. I have that Photopass bag. It was the first thing I noticed in the first video I watched. Then I started pointing out all the books that I have sitting on my shelf as well. I was able to keep my photopass jacket because costuming never checked it out to me. One thing I did start collecting was the restaurant menus from around the parks. I only have a dozen or more. I do have some rare photopass cards. I believe it was in 04 or 05, Disney sent out special cards for passholders. It was the pink version (prior to the purple), but had the passholder key on it. I also have all the party cards. I also have about 6 or 7 photopass cd's. Since I knew the timing of when the pictures would get deleted, I would get one about every 6 months.

    I love your videos and all your great cast member stories. I know how it feels to have family give you a hard time over Disney hoarding , my mom told me I had too much stuff the other day, but everything is so magical you can't resist! I can't imagine her reaction if I had as much as you did, but then again after so many years and parks it adds up.

    I use to work for a 3 unit game store hear in San Diego. We sold everything from AD&D to comics, and as the man that ordered all the comics I got lots and lots of free stuff. I would go to the dealers only shows and get free stuff. Sometimes I would grab stuff for specific customers and others just went into my personal collection. Years later most of it was just trash that I sorted through and dumped but a few things I have kept. Like my signed copy of Dark Sun from AD&D and my signed photo of Carl Barks (Creator of Donald Duck!)

    I love your videos and your personality. I worked at a Six Flags park call Astroworld for 24 years here in Houston (Texas). Actually, my husband and I owned a small business that operated in the park the last 18 years. I love the amusement park life. You can tell the "lifers", they care about making sure they only see smiles all day and not an " I need to work for money to pay for my car" people. I was a face painter some years. Seeing a kid not haveing a good time would bother me. Most times it was the parent going off on the kid for just being a kid. So I would walk over to them and tell them I needed their help. I needed someone to paint on to attract more business and then I would go to town on that kid. Painting their face and down their neck to the arm and then down the leg. The kid would sit so still and rest, Mom and Dad would calm down and start smiling that their kid got something special. No more tears. Isn't that a great feeling, only us "lifers" know that warm feeling in our hearts. Anyway, I wanted to thank you myself for being there to take pictures, for standing long hours on your feet, for enduring the heat and the sun to give us all a memory of out time at Disney. My family and I went again last summer and this time as a gift to me my kids bought the Memory Maker. Wonderful thing. I didn't need to worry about carrying a camera and looking through the lens, and I got to be in the pictures. My husband and I are going back this fall as a celebration of "last kid off to college empty nest" trip.
    We will be getting the Memory Maker, it's my birthday when we are there and my hubby already said it's my gift. I have always told my kids if I come up missing one day it is because I have run away to Disneyworld to work. Thank you Thank you Thank you once again for caring to take photos. You are a wonderful soul.

      I was actually blessed to be able to visit Astroworld about 2 weeks before the closed. I even wear one of their shirts in my last Rhino Rally video. And so happy that you've been enjoying the videos. I had a blast as a photographer, and I wish I could do it again. Shoot, if people were willing to cover my expenses I'd be happy to follow them around with a camera now. :-) It was so much fun

I also have a chip of paint from the yak and yeti. It was on the ground the morning after they painted it while building. I also have a pin collection surrounded by fast passes. My friend gave me a grab bag so I had a lot to trade with. I have all the tickets and various maps ect from when i worked as a cp from may 2007-may 2008. Me again, sorry, haha! I know you guys have a portable closed-caption machine people can carry around (having had to use one myself, that was brilliant, just wish it had more options for more of the rides but that was a few years ago so they might be updated now) but what else do you learn about for disabled guests? Just out of curiosity. The portable CC machine also does audio-description, I think? I vaguely remember thinking I saw a headphone socket on it, so....!

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +1

      I never actually used a CC machine. Not sure if SDC has one or not, unless a guest brought it in themselves. I think I remember seeing one in one of the stores at Disney one time, but since we didn't run the registers (just showed and printed photos) I never had the opportunity to use one. For the most part our training was things to look for and recognize, what to expect, what may or may not happen, how to deal with some of it, and to have patience, understanding, and flexibility. I will likely do a video at some point in the future on my experiences in dealing with special needs, handicaps and disabilities., and how the training helped.

    • @Roadent1241
      @Roadent1241 7 років тому

      I've never heard of SDC until I started watching these, I assume these are all on the LA-side of America? Or just basic theme parks scattered around 'Merica. We're not a big country so we can't have the amount that you seem to.
      Oh, that's cool, that's good then. That would be an interesting and educational video to have from the perspective of the non-disabled, thank you again sir!

      yes I'm going to do a follow up to this, but not sure when. With the booklets showing the covers is ok, but they are marked that the contents are "proprietary information" belonging to Disney, and they would fall under the non-disclosure agreement that we sign, so I probably shouldn't show more than the cover. :-)

      LOL My name isn't a secret. I've actually commented as my regular name a couple of times accidentally, not realizing I was doing so with the wrong log in. You can figure it out pretty easy off of the Facebook page as well. There are some that not only have figured out my real name, but with a little detective work also discovered what church I pastor and what my personal email address is vs. the SirWillow one. :-)
      But then I'm not a person of real secrets either because of the other work I do. lol

      I wrote the comment when you showed your cards on the table your name tag was on the desk well zoomed in. Then in the end you showed your name tags from rhino rally "so when I was driving at Rhino rally I had George" then I thought "shoot, Your name maybe is not a big mystery as I thought"^^.
      I was thinking in one of the last videos when you had a G on the chest in that play whats a normal name in USA that starts with a G you could have had the name Gilbert:P but George locked better on you.
      *I now feel real stupid if I watched on your bio in your profile i could have seen your name long before some times things is simple and im not thinking ^^*

    I would be this kind of hoarder as well if I was able to land a dream job like that. (I know there are a lot of people that hate Disney, but it's a JOB and you have to go into it expecting that there are going to be some less-than-magical times in any job, especially where heat and emotions are all going to be high). I have enough stuff collected from just going to different parks.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому

      Thanks, and exactly. I find that the ones that complain (there's not a lot, but the ones that do tend to be pretty loud) seem to forget that it is a job, and you're expected to work with things that aren't always fun. Like any job, it is what you make of it, and I made sure that I made it fun. So it was. I still miss it.

    If you want to get rid of or downsize any of it. The paperwork in the file cabinet (minus any papers that the theme parks would get irritated over being handed to the public, or that contain personal information) could be sold on eBay to collectors. Any of those could be sold to collectors. You get your space back and make a profit.
    Papers that have sensitive information, you could put them in a bin, go camping and use them as firestarters. That way they have a use, you get your space back, and you can reminisce while they burn.

    • @neverlandonearth77
      @neverlandonearth77 7 років тому

      The Disney pins you could put on the outside of a canvas bag that you use for whatever purpose so that you can enjoy the pins. They have some locking pin backs that ensure they won't get lost.

    • @neverlandonearth77
      @neverlandonearth77 7 років тому

      You could also put the pins on a corkboard and just push them into the corkboard for display.

    • @neverlandonearth77
      @neverlandonearth77 7 років тому

      Some of the pictures you could get professionally made into a large wall collage. You can get your shelf space back.

    • @neverlandonearth77

      You could also wear your costumes to movie showings when you go to the theater. Wearing your theme park costume to a Disney movie might be fun. :-)

      Best I can do is make some guesses- ridership was down, the land rovers were expensive to maintain, high labor costs because of the number of workers you needed for it to run efficiently, once the water portion was down (which was an upkeep nightmare many times) then it really dropped in popularity, and they can use the space for other things. Even when I was there way back in 2004-2006 we joked that we were the red headed stepchild who knew it's time was soon approaching.

      the best characters are the ones that you want to meet the most. You're not going to get a good interaction if you don't care much about the character. But you're much more likely if you like them a lot and are interested in them.

    I know this comment doesn't really regard the topic of the video, but I had a question about pin trading and kind of a tale of my experience at Disney this spring break.
    So this spring break I had the privilege of being able to go to Disney (something I've wanted to do ever since I went when I was little.) and this year I wanted to focus a lot on spending my money on pins so I could participate in pin trading. So this was on Thursday afternoon at Magic Kingdom at a restaurant not far from the Haunted Mansion. This was my very first time ever pin trading. I was nervous and I had done a lot of research on pins so I could be well prepared, but I was sure of the policy where cast members must trade with guests. So I approach an employee standing outside of the restaurant that had a lanyard with some pins that looked interesting. I said "excuse me sir, but is it true that cast members can trade with guests?" He looked at me oddly, then down at his lanyard, and back at me. He scoffed and said "are you a customer?" I said no although I came back later and ate there. "No?" He then continued to look at me weird and then began laughing at me! I gave up on the whole thing and I went the rest of the day being kinda miserable and embarrassed and hadn't traded any pins.
    So my question is, "Do cast members have to trade with guests?" I just wanted to confirm with someone who had actually worked there although every source I've seen has said yes. And if yes, what should I do? I hate to complain to Disney, I actually wanted to seek someone who I could compliment on a good job! But because of my experience I was kinda upset the rest of the day and I was scared to even try trading again.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому

      +Mc Madi sounds like the cast member might have been trying to joke with you and did a poor job of it. They wear two types of lanyards. Black lanyards must trade with anyone. Blue or green lanyards are for kids to trade with. And yes they must trade. If you see a cast member wearing a lanyard simply ask "may I see your pins please?" Then, "May I trade for that one?" And point to the one you want. :-)

    watching your videos I wonder why I hear about people hating working a disney, Maybe Photopass castmembers were exempt from the communal underwear policy, Or was that not in effect when you joined

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +2

      I think that no matter how great a job is, there will always be someone who hates it. Not everyone is going to be a fit for every job. Some are going to hate dealing with long hours in the heat, some people just do not do well in dealing with guests who don't know what's going on, and a multitude of other reasons. Some just don't fit, but those that do will love it.

      SirWillow was never a character, he was a cast member. Only the character costumes did you have to wear the same underwear, and that stopped in 2001. He was a cast member, so their costumes were exempt

    I've always wondered if the differences between the disney parks are worth visiting more than one. I've only been to Paris, but I feel like the American ones are bigger. (I'd also prefer a 100% English park)

You've also only been to the one that has struggled the worst with making money and had to let some things slide. There will be quite a difference in the US parks.

    I work as an ebay seller so my mind immediately went to how much some of the rare/cast member only stuff must be able to sell for. You've probably got well over a thousand dollars worth of stuff collected there. Someday your family may not laugh as much at your hoarding if you someday decide to sell some of the stuff off and get some good money.

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +1

      It's worth more than that, I'm sure. I haven't shown the full thing- maybe 1/3rd of it. They'll laugh and tease me about it, but my kids have an interest as well. I've already been told there's no reason to worry about selling it. To many priceless memories in it.

    What happens to all of the costumes that are written off and no longer of value to Disney? All claimed by cast members or are somehow "recycled"?

    • @SirWillow
      @SirWillow  7 років тому +1

      Not claimed by cast members. They are usually recycled or destroyed. Normally they are very cautious about any costumes getting out like that and don't allow it. I ran into a weird loophole with the status, location, and the age of the costume. It's very rare for that to happen.

      A couple of years back when they built Cheetah Hunt. Part of the coaster's track actually goes through a portion of the old water part of Rhino Rally.
