An investment like this now for the NRL will pay dividends for the future. As you said, if they want a perfect way to build interest around the NRLW, this is one of the best ways to do so.
The NRL license was actually held by True Blu, they previously contracted Big Ant to make the game on their behalf. That business agreement ended 5 or 6 years ago which is part of the reason there hasn’t been an RLL5. True Blu then contracted someone else to do it, they just couldn’t get it done within the expected time or cost. If you want a Triple AAA quality game you would be looking at a budget of $150 - 200 million. Our best chance of getting something somewhat decent is for Big Ant to do it again. This is because they are they are the only developer with something that works that could be built upon and improved. Modern software development is an iterative process, you build something then you keep adding to and enhancing what you have done.
Ah damn - I’d seen conflicting reports as to which one of them held the license but my memory was that it was Big Ant so I went with that. Either way, doesn’t impact the story much. Obviously I’m no business analyst, but I don’t think we necessarily need a AAA game. I think we could dip slightly below that in quality and still satisfy the market. But yeah in the end this video is pretty much just me making the case that there’s much more value to sports video games than simply sales revenue
@@TheLeaguieThe problem is that in software development the quality and budget are totally linked together. So if you don't give it a budget you stay trapped in the cycle that you described in your video. I agree with your general observation about growing the game, unfortunately I think they might have missed the boat on this one. Games development is just too long and expensive of a process now.
I'm still playing Rugby League 2 from 2005. It was the last one that had keyboard controls instead of being controller only. I think James Roby (St Helens) was the last player who was in that game to still be playing NRL or Super League.
I’ve had the same with the F1 games and madden. They may be pretty bad simulations but they got me into the sport because it gave me something to do in down time. Plenty of the nrl have been open about them playing video games so it would be good marketing if they used their own players to advertise. I would really like to see a player card system and pro team similar to fifa. I remember being a kid and buying the rugby league trading cards and showing them to my other friends who did the same.
Yep. Couldn’t agree more. Downloading the current teams on RLL4 has become a yearly tradition and it gets worse the more I have to do it. It’s why I’m stuck playing other sports games and other games. Also are you sponsored by kitchen gun
@@TheLeaguie idk my doctor said that I might have an outburst and tell everyone what team the Leaguie supports if he dosen’t stream by the end of the year. He said it’s a very common outburst for people with this disease
Maybe the NRL should look at a smaller licensing fee for a gaming company today for it to pay benefits in the future of generating licensing fees from future merch sales.
Played the original rugby league live games years ago. What the NRL needs to do is get EA to make the games for them. I remember when Fifa street came out and thought that was a good example that they could pull off a new sport game (new sport to EA)
We're in the same boat for Rugby Union. The best game is still Jonah Lomu Rugby and that came out 27 years ago! Rugby 25 is in development but seems to be a reskin of Rugby League Live 4. Like you said, it's a different sport!
rugby league games and v8 supercars games are like the australian gta 5/gta 6 the anticipation for these type of games in australia is outrageous id say we need em
I feel like technology wise and modern interaction with fans the NRL is behind in many aspects. Absolutely agree with the NRL needing a game. I don't know a single person my age or younger that didn't grow up playing video games. A massive market they are missing out on there. I also feel like they are very backwards in their online presence. The NFL and other American sports love it when people create videos and share gameplay of their sports. They go viral and the sport gets great exposure. I'm not big into American sports, but I see basketball and NFL highlights all the time. I can even name teams, players and even check up on the games every now and again. Another media we are seeing a lot recently is documentaries. I understand it's not really feasible to do it with all 17 NRL teams, but I think an origin short series should be a massive priority for the NRL. 5 EPs or less and put it on Netflix, watch the sport explode. Even a Pacific games short series attached (1 episode or something). Great vid as always Leaguie, what's the content looking like over the season break? I'm sure you could get heaps of ideas in the comments or maybe a UA-cam discussion thingo.
Yeah well said, I agree completely. A number of clubs are doing their own documentaries on UA-cam, and the Panthers have done one with 9, but yeah never on a platform like Netflix I’ve got a heap of content ideas for the rest of the off season, way more than I could ever actually make. But tbf we’ll soon be in season previews territory
Super league Fan here, finding copies in England is like gold dust. I would love a new game so I can see my team St Helens in a higher quality game. Also wants some of the sky sports commentators for the super league games because it doesn’t feel right having Andrew Voss and Phil Gould
I would think surely if they went to the trouble to develop the game, they’d at least stick it on some shelves in the UK? Or at least make it available for purchase online. But yeah the state of RL over there is something I want to look into more closely, potentially making a video about it in future
I haven’t even bought live 4 I am still on Live 3 because that is the only one I could find. I do like how it has a unique cover with Daryl Clark of Warrington at the time
While it would be great to get a new league game, I can't see any developer bigger than Big Ant take it on, as Rugby League just doesnt have enough appeal outside Australasia, meaning EA/2K probs wont touch it. EA once made cricket games, then dropped them after 2007 as it wasnt worth the investment
For sure, which is why I think it has to be treated as an advertising strategy, rather than something expected to generate profit. Allocating some advertising budget into covering the shortfall of a game could prove the difference
Agreed, have played a lot of different sports games and it pulls you in and makes you interested. Granted not very good at many of them. Enjoyed playing MyGM on 2k17, with expansion teams and some incredible draft classes
Inspired by my trip to see the NRL in Vegas earlier this year, I created the Las Vegas Silverbacks as an expansion team. But tbh, it’s the player career that I adore. Drafted to the bulls and playing alongside the likes of Dwayne Wade, Jimmy Butler, Rajon Rondo… it’s just super cool. Not to mention Michael B Jordan playing a character in it too
Problem I have concluded is that nrl is mainly Oceania. To make a quality game it takes a lot of time and money which an nrl game wouldn’t have much support, we move to time and practically it’s a love job that would need regular updates to keep up the replay value. I just don’t think there is enough money to be invested or profit to make for stakeholders to gamble on.💔
Really depends when it’s coming out. Could still be years away potentially so very hard to say. But I’d hope it’d be as accessible as possible. As for the warriors, you’ll have to wait for my season previews 🫡💚
Yeah that was just because the licensing to Big Ant studios expired. I’d actually say it’s a good sign - because now other studios are free to come in and take the license if they want to
Aw man, I was itching for an excuse to complain about how shit union video games are, thanks for giving it to me. So the latest(-ish) installment in that series is Rugby 22, which I naively bought and tried playing, anticipating that it would be comparable to a FIFA game. Antoine Dupont agreed to be on the cover, so it has to be good, right? /s Well. I boot it up, and it prompts me to do the tutorial, which I do gladly because it is far from obvious how they had squeezed a complicated game like union into one tiny controller. It turned out the answer was "shittily". There's like a dozen sets of controls for different parts of the game, and most of them are really fiddly, and the tutorial doesn't teach you them properly! For each one, you get at most five chances to do it right, and the game just moves on regardless of how many times you were successful. It doesn't make you do it over and over again until a certain number of successes, and you don't even get a choice of repeating a section. You'd have to do the *whole* tutorial over again. I bounced straight off it and haven't picked it up since. The only way for league to go from there is up, and given that the administrators of the sport are capable of some truly savvy moves (selling league to the Yanks? *chef's kiss* I'm still not over it lmao), the sky really is the limit here with a bit of vision and will. P.S. It's a really good time to be a Chelsea fan right now; have you seen their position in the table?
Haha wow, yeah no I haven’t played Union games before but it’s pretty disheartening to hear that not even the globally dominant code can get a decent quality videogame. I’ll always remain hopeful though. And yep absolutely on Chelsea. Although I will admit that photo is a little misleading. I half-heartedly followed them when I was younger, before falling in love with Sunderland around 7 years ago. Still got a soft spot for the blues though!
