    Summary(Important Notes) of
    The Stories of The Prophets-
    9. To What Level Are Prophets Protected ('Iṣmah') From Committing Sin?
The issue that brings up the most controversy is can the Prophets do something that goes against the commandment of Allah(minor sins) after they get the revelation?
The way the Prophets(and their families) are described in Bible is completely unacceptable and disgusting. Muslims do not believe them at all. There is no question that these are fabrications. Our(Islamic) controversies regarding the Prophets are trivial in regards to the Bible. For example:
    1. Hawaa[wife of Adam(AS)] is cursed in the Bible(for making Adam(AS) eat from the tree) and, supposedly, all women are cursed and the menses and pangs of childbirth are reprimanding the women for what their mother did.
    2. Nuh(AS) is said to be drunk and naked in the Bible and one of his sons becomes cursed for making fun of him(AS) in that state. This is used to justify racism and slavery. [Genesis, Verses 20-23]
    3. Moses(AS) commanded his army to kill every single man, woman, and child and became angry when some were spared and commanded that many of them should be killed and the rest of them should be taken as slaves. [Numbers, Ch-31, Verses 15-17]
    4. When Lut(AS) and his two daughters were saved, they were the only people in that region left. The daughter planned extremely evil things and gave birth as a result of it. The sons grew up and became leaders of other tribes. [Genesis, Ch-19, Verses 31 onwards]
    5. David is accused multiple times of debauchery, unlawful gazing at women, and sending the husband to battle so that he can marry the widow. [Second Samuels, 11 onwards]
    6. Solomon is accused of worshipping the false Gods to please his pagan wives. He supposedly built temples for the Gods too. This is blatant Shirk(associating partners with Allah) and Kufr(denying Allah). [1 Kings, Ch-11, Verse 3-10]
    7. One of the brothers of Yusuf(AS) supposedly rapes multiple women and everyone encourages him. Another supposedly does incest with his sister. [Second Samuels]
No group, big or small, in Islam affirms that Prophets can do these types of evil and bizarre deeds. The Prophets of Allah can't act in this type of manner.
However, our scholars differ on to what extent the Prophets are protected after they reach Prophethood. This is a very emotional topic to discuss and it is difficult to discuss this academically. This is because it is human nature to revere someone(especially who is dead) and to create a romanticized picture of them. This then clouds the person’s judgment even when there is clear evidence present. The Prophets are the best but they are the best human beings.
There are two main opinions and both of these opinions are supported by great scholars who never accused the other side to be disrespectful to the Prophets:-
    First position:
The Prophets can't commit major and/or despicable sins in the eyes of the masses. However, they can slip into a mistake that is other than this with the conditions that it is a one-off mistake and they repent and the mistake affects them positively so that they become better people as a result.
    Evidence:
    1. Adam(AS) ate the fruit when it was prohibited and when Shaitan enticed them, thus, doing a sin. Allah says in the Qur’an “Adam disobeyed His Lord”, Adam(AS) then repented and became a role model. In Hadith in Sahih Bukhari, Musa(AS) asks Adam(AS) if he is the one who committed a ‘sin’ thus making it explicit. It is self-evident that Adam(AS) did what is considered a sin. It is a sin that we relate to(immortality) and is a one-off thing.
    2. In the Qur’an, Nuh(AS) is seen talking to Allah about his disbelieving son after Allah explicitly tells him(AS) not to speak to Allah about disbelieving people. Again, it is a sin that we relate to and is a one-off thing.
    3. Dawood(AS) did something that he(AS) should not have done and Allah says that he(AS) repented and fell into prostration(SAJDAH) and He forgave him(AS).
    4. Sulaiman(AS) did a sin in heedlessness(GHAFLA) and Allah says that He forgave him(AS).
    5. Yunus(AS) explicitly did something he(AS) should not have done. Allah says he(AS) thought Allah will not hold him(AS) accountable but when Allah does, in the belly of the whale, he(AS) repents with the famous dua. Again, being frustrated and walking away from arrogant people is a sim that we can sympathize with.
    6. There are generic Ayahs and Hadith that mention Allah forgiving the Prophet(SAW).
    7. The long Hadith of intercession shows Prophets fearing for themselves(AS) based on something that they have done.
What is the wisdom in Allah letting the Prophets commit minor slip-ups?
    1. So that the Prophets recognize that they are not perfect and, in that recognition, they renew their effort to try to become even better.
Evidence: Musa(AS), although before he(AS) became a Prophet, explicitly shows this in the dua in the Qur’an, it made him(AS) a better person.
    2. Allah loves those who repent and so, if Allah wants to love the Prophets even more, then their repentance should be the best. If the Prophets are the most beloved to Allah, then they must also be the most beloved because of their repentance.
Evidence: In Islamic literature, Adam(AS) is said to repent in such a spectacular way that no one has done it like that since.
    3. Because the Prophets must be role models. If the Prophets were flawless like Angels, we would have no connection with them. The mistakes of the Prophets humanize them to us.
The scholars which hold this view:
    1. Ibn Battal(died 449 A.H).
    2. Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr(Andulisian, died 463 A.H, famous Maliki scholar).
    3. Al-Qhadhi ‘Iyaaz(Adulisian, died 454 A.H, Maliki scholar).
    4. An-Nawawi(Scholar of Hadith, died 676 A.H).
    5. Ibn Taymiyyah.
    Second Position:
The Prophets are protected from committing any sins. The status of the Prophet is so high that a slip up from them is made a big deal and called a sin. This is complicating something simple. The scholars holding this position take an emotional stance and bring evidence proving the high status of the Prophets and claiming that they are sinless after Prophethood because of this high status. The response to that is that the Prophets are the best, but they are the best human beings.
The scholars which hold this view:
    1. Fakhr-ad-Din Ar-Radhi.
    2. Ibn Hajar.
    3. Many scholars of Tasawuff.
    Advanced FootNote:
One’s position about the ‘Ismah(Protection) of the Prophets affects other issues of theology, especially, how you view the spiritual role of the Prophets - going through them to reach Allah, asking the Prophets of their needs, etc. The link between these two topics is present.
    Just for information:-
The largest Non-Sunni group(12 Imams - Shia in Iran and around) also believe in the complete sinlessness of the Prophets. They have their reasons to do that. They also say that anyone who believes that Prophets can commit sins(minor) is out of the fold of Islam.
    Conclusion:-
    1. Thankfully, there is a huge difference between the Biblical narrative and the Qur’anic narrative. The Qur’an is very clear that the Prophets can never commit major and despicable sins.
    2. What the Qur’an does show is a non-repetitive mistake that we can empathize with and which leads them to repent in the best way and makes them perfect role models for us.
    3. Although this is depicted clearly, the topic of Prophets committing sins is very emotional. So, there is another opinion that claims that the Prophets are sinless because of their high status, and the word “sin” is being used on a somewhat metaphorical level.
    4. Nonetheless, the differences are rather technical and, at the end of the day, all Sunni Islam acknowledges that the Prophets are as perfect as possible, that they are role models, that they are worthy of emulation, and that the purpose of the stories of them is to raise their status of Prophets, unlike the Biblical version.
    This ends the entire summary.
Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure.

I always has theory in mind that the story of prophet in bible are once has been done by king or other high rank personnel. So to justified their doing, they put their sin in prophet so -If- the peasant they give da'wah to not question their king or leader wrongdoing.

I have no doubt in my mind that's exactly what happened. A very good example of that is the blaming of Golden Calf on Harun (A.S). Allah exposes them in the Quran but you can clearly see what the Banu Israel did to the Torah to take the blame off of them and put it on the noble Messenger.

Many things will be used by non hijabis even - including long skirts and non- sleeved blouses. I hardly think Islam makes it overly difficult for a person to earn a living since as a businessperson you can sell something halal but you cant control what your customer does with it. Likewise scrunchies and hair ties etc will also be used by hijabi women and you wont have any control over it. My understanding is that if you sell halal items you wont be held responsible if the customer does something bad since in Islam no soul will be made to carry the burden ( sins) of another soul. Imagine if a business owner sold kitchen knives , a customer bought it and later he killed a person with the same knife -- logically & morally you cannot punish the business owner who sold the knife. Unless there is proof that person sold those knifes with the specific intention that those kitchen knifes will be bought by murderers planning to kill a person. Islam is based on faith & logic/commonsense based on what I learnt. Allah knows best.

  • @squarecircles4846

YQ i think you had it completely wrong when you spoke about eve, none of them is cursed in the text. The only one the word cursed is used with the Nachash, Actually it worth noting that because God had blessed the two earlier it couldnt be the case that they are simultaneously cursed. The ground is cursed as a consequence of their disobedience. Please read the bible carefully and note the nuances especially when you are a scholar. You should also as a scholar know that lot is never considered a prophet and we dont believe the prophets are infallible. But i find it quite ironic that you are abhorred at these events but look favourably on mary qibtiyya and hafsa's incidence, aisha's marriage, zaynab/zayd fiasco, believing women "giving themselves" to mohammed and several others. INTERESTING, very very INTERESTING.
    Your argument can basically be deconstructed into;
if a book contains prophetic characters who do horrible things then the book is not from God (easily refutable premise, since this is not to mean these acts are sanctioned by God)
The bible contain such characters; Therefore
The bible is not from God
Its a very absurd position considering that the bible narrates everything about its characters and makes no attempt to embellish them. But if granted, applying this modus ponens to the quran will make it fall through. If you live in a glass house..............
