I own an XtR my brother owns XtZ both set up for touring 50/50 dirt /tar same tyres . We both prefer the XTR , stable as on any surface , lighter, easier to handle in bush. Both been riding for 40 yrs. only bike I've ever owned that doesn't head shake on the dirt. The one you tested may have something wrong with it.?
First class review and very honest seeing you're trying to sell it. You don't need a screen on any bike at sub 160 kph speeds. They always cause turbulence. I have three naked bikes and no screens.
i put brand new full knobblies on mine, hitting sand at 80kmph is scary, the front end becomes loose and wants to throw you off, i figured out to shift myself back on the seat as far as possible, it helps alot
I had bad shimmy on loose sand at low 40km/h speed with my 06 660r. Rear wheel was off center from previous owner adjusting the chain. High speed shimmy from 145km + is from the shitty rear tire
I've had my XT660R for about 4 years and all of the performance issues in this review are accurate. However if you get a set a race cans and a performance air filter plus a chip remap it does iron out some of the issues, i.e cornering at low revs is less jittery. The screen is aftermarket so most of the time the screen is lower, and handling while off road, do get a set of knobbly tires.
У меня xt 660 r уставал на нём не мог понять почему .Понял .Далековато руль . Перегнул и доварил по 20 мм с каждой стороны результатом доволен .Ростом я 180 см.
Nice review. Down to earth an all that. What u say about the high speed shimmy I have read that a few places, could possibly be because with the 21" front wheel the geometry is more tipped back compared to the xt660x road version. Makes the front end feel less planted and more vague.
Good review cobber. I've owned my 08 xt660r for 1 week and I have noticed all the performance issues you have talked about. torque is definitely amazing. it's a big boys bike that likes to go off-road It's definitely a versatile bike though. poor man's ktm but more fun than a klr and dr this bike is addictive in that it's fun and easy to ride. and if you get ride of the gay handlebars and put a nice exhaust and new rear light it's quite a headhunter
Tire pressures my bud, my bike is rock solid to 170. at 140 cruising its a non issue at all, never had a wobble after I sorted the tire pressures. I ride mine mainly offroad and have never broken down or been last on any adventure ride among the biggest and best so I think your review is a bit unrealistic. It's mainly made for off road I would say..
merci pour le partage ! le seul défaut de cette moto en fait , c'est le son ! qui n'est pas très expansif ! sinon parfaite moto par son look , ses performances tout ça ! merci belles images !
had the xtx660x that was a fun bike iam looking to get a second bike to a little bit of off road /green laning do you think it would be suitable for the purpose ..
There is also a XT1200 Tenere. That one does have more cylinders so you were onto something. The reference in this video is to the XT660Z though, which uses the same engine as the XT660R & XT660X.
That bloodey music and the barely audible voice at the start nearly made me stop watching! Wound forward a bit n loved the rest of the report. Have, always been attracted to this type of bike after reading about Dan Walsh, bike journalist back in the early OO ' s who took a 600 down the western side of the U.S and into Central America. His monthly reports showed that these bikes are tough as nutz and that's fine by me!!
I have a XT660R, and have never experienced the shimmy on high speeds. Mine has done over 70,000 miles, and still going strong

Thanks for the feedback mate!

As far as I know the XT660R actually has more suspension travel than the XT660Z so it should handle offroad better than the Z in some ways...

Wobbling at high speeds is almost a selling point for me. Can't take a bus to work so I'd love to keep my driver's license.
I know it's two years old but, this comment is gold

Thanks Mate!, Yep could be a factor for sure, There just not a top speed bike in the end

Thanks for the kind words!, Agreed you could do alot with that bike with the right setup and i think it would surprise a few people
i m new to dirt bikes and researching alot can u tell me its dual sport kind bike???? thnx,
Wish Yamaha launched tis kind of bikes, tired of its scooters and FZ 150 and now only fz250.... we need onroad and off road bikes like this ....
That sucks mate, Hope they release some soon!
Thank you for sharing too .Awesome bike for offroad ^^

Great video!
Thanks Dude!

You've probably got another bike by now. If not, with the correct tyres for the job and a lighter 2-into-1 exhaust, it'll be a treat!
If you have front wheel weave, the tires are too soft , being a dealer you know to set them right.
Rather than correct the pressure he'll just blame everything else 😥
Great review :)
the Xt600 just got 1 cylinder and the tenere got more right? That might be one the driving is different
Exact same engine!

So what's the difference between a tourer and an adventure bike ?
Adventure usually has a small off road capability
come on #Yamaha USA need the xt660z
When did you go to Mexico?
lol
It's south of Mandurah, Western Australia, isn't it!!
660r on a supermoto? nice.. looks fast
Ain't no wr450 but a lot easier to live with
LOL. That ramp is mine.
