@@ravenmaster6364 Ferrari Was never originally owned by fiat and spent a small period of time owned by fiat. Get the facts straight.Ferrari is way above Porsche.
I’ll never forget what a wealthy man said when he was discussing cars. He said he would never buy a Ferrari due to the “wanker factor”. That always stuck with me lol.
@@MichaelBrown-pg5dy If it helps, some of us Ferrari owners also love Porsches. Your OP has however brought out posts from others that let the wider Porsche community down with childish and tribal comments.
I’m a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 owner, plenty of P cars of all vintages here in the Bay Area. Owners sometimes hang out with other owners who have similar vintage cars. But I usually get a nice comment because of the 4.0 engine and the FrozenBerry Metallic color. I could care less what anyone thinks of my car, I love driving her and that’s what matters
The only shade I ever get, as a launch year 986 owner, is from non P-car owners. People who haven’t experienced the brand but have opinions on it don’t matter to me. If you own a p-car, cool, your opinion is valid, if not, keep walking 🤣👍 I’ll add to this One personal opinion. If your friends or car guy group look down on your car, you need new friends or a new car group. Doesn’t matter what car you’re driving if you’re part of a passion. They need to respect that. That goes for Porsche as well as any other brand. Some people in the car community can be toxic and there needs to be more of a bro code because most non-car people hate all of us. 👍
Agree. The only person who ever gave me crap about owning a Cayman instead of a 911 was some douche on reddit who didn't own any Porsche. I've never gotten shit from anyone within PCA. As a matter of fact, I'm friends with someone who wants to sell his 911 so he can buy a Cayman.
As a 996 owner, I look down on no one, because, well, 996 owner. BUT, there is absolutely some hardcore snobbery out there, although that's present in EVERY hobby and all walks of life.
Transitioned from 981 Cayman S to 992 Carrera GTS. Both manual. I loved the smaller size of Cayman and mid-engine handling. 911 bigger but shrinks around you as you get to know it. Power of GTS is unreal, but also miss naturally aspirated Cayman engine. Love all Porsches. My experience has been that it is typically non-Porsche owners that judge based on cost from a spectator position, rather than true enthusiasts and owners of the marque.
986 Boxster and 996 GT3 owner here. I think the one I'm driving at the moment is the best one then I get in the other and I think it's the better one... Both great cars we are all lucky to have these cars.
Yes, I have experienced this. Not much, but it exists. My first Porsche was a Boxster. I sold it to buy a 911 (997.2 C2S 6M), which was awesome. But I sold that too, to buy another Boxster (981 GTS). Which I love even more. So I’m in the “They’re all good - shut up and drive” camp!
I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s watching racing with my dad. Porsche 911’s were winning races. There were no Caimens or Boxters at the time. I wanted a 911. I had a 911 poster on my bedroom wall. After graduating in 82, Alpine Porsche had a radio sales event where they advertised a “drive a Porsche” event. My girlfriend at the time and I got in the car and drove up and there was no way they were going to let some kid drive a new 911. The oldest 911 on the lot was a 1970 and they gave me the chance to drive it, after some begging on my part. That drive changed my life. I knew I was going to own a 911. Fast forward 30 years with wife and kids. My wife and I were having one of our cars, a Cayenne, serviced and they were out of Cayennes and they gave us a Caimen for the day. So we drove it up Pikes Peak and had an absolute blast in that car. The handling was magnificent and I dint think it was any slower than the 997 S I drove up a few years earlier. Also a loaner. I bought a 911 after the kids were out of college and that’s the car I always wanted. But I think the younger generations may well want the mid engined cars over the 911, just because they are exposed to them. I think they also need to see them winning races. I like both the Caimen and Boxter, but those are not the cars I wanted growing up. I think when we older 911 diehards are gone, there will be less bias against the mid engined cars.
This overall is such a good conversation to have and you really could go into the weeds. I have a 987CS and it's my first Porsche. I was parking at a Cars & Coffee and a nice Air-Cooled parked next to me. We were close, when I got out, I was just checking my door and the guy in the 911 asked very rudely, "Did you hit my f*cking car?" Screw you man! I care about my car just as much as you care about your car. I don't know if I'll ever get anymore more than this and I feel like it's a reward for my hard work. I can respect your car, but please respect mine. I'm glad you're in a higher social-economic bracket than me. Perhaps someday I'll get there, but for now I'm happy and I love what my P-car does for me. I wouldn't trade it for yours. To piggy-back on this, I see the all the mechanical issues that go along with m9X engines and I wonder why there's not more cost-effective solutions. Why is PCA not actively working to find solutions? Guess what community, if you kill access to affordable cars, you will slowly kill interest in your community. There needs to be access. I'm not advocating that it's a gimme or easy, just saying that it needs to be there. If you're not bringing new blood in, then what happens as the old guard passes? If we all love these cars as much as we say we do. If we're truly passionate about what these cars can do. Then we need to support all of them and find ways to keep them around. It'll be a sad day when m9X-engined vehicles disappear. Show me a modern Porsche with more curves than a 987 Cayman. Truly beautiful!
Sometimes car cliques are like being in high school again. Life is too short for that kind of crap, especially with such a great car. One of my friends went from a 911 to a Boxster and said he preferred the Boxster because it was a better handling car.
Only the rich douches who buy a late-model 911 as their first Porsche look down on "lesser" models... those of us of more meagre means who worked their way up through 924s, 914s and air-cooled 911s when they were cheap (and who are now driving 996s) accept all Porsche sports cars as equals. The SUVs, sedans and EVs can stick it though. 🤡
981 Boxster PDK Base Owner here. Experienced it a few different times. Even experienced it with a Panamera owner as well. It's really sad. It has steered me away from PCA in Minnesota because of the snobbery that I've experienced.
that's not true. We throw shade on overweight Macan owners who wear Porsche shirts. If a 911 owner throws shade on the Cayman/boxster, then THEY are the posers. It is hard not to respect the heck out of those tiny roadsters. And we'll miss them when we are all driving golf-carts.
Just bought an 02 Boxster S for$6500 Be my fifth one Never had a problem with any of them Always kept them for a year or two and usually made money on them Ultra cheap fun Love any 911 but I’m an Uber cheap bass turd Putting my money into my 2 240z card I’m 6’6” and use a shoehorn to get into the Boxster Usually call the fire department to get me out
The 911 is the definitive Porsche. That said, there is more than enough room for all the other Porsche's, whether they're the older front engined 944/928's, the SUV/CUV's like the Cayenne/Macan or the mid engine Boxster/Cayman's. They're all great cars and I embrace both them and their owners. In fact, I've owned most of them myself and enjoyed them all.
To anyone thinking about a used 911, I will offer the following suggestion/recommendation: Go and test drive some used Caymans as well. I have found that each generation Cayman is just as capable, and just as enjoyable, as the previous generation’s 911, Especially when you compare the 987 Cayman to the 996, or the 981 Cayman to the 997. If you can live without a sunroof, and without that “briefcase compartment” that Porsche calls a back seat, then the Cayman can offer more pure sports car value than an older 911 in the same price range can…JMHO
True. To go one step further, often comparison within a single generation actually favors Boxster/Cayman. For example, over less than perfect tarmac, I find the ride and handling of a 987.2 significantly better than that of a 997.2. It's just physics, 997's employed a very stiff rear suspension to keep the heavy tail in check.
I had a Boxster S 981, and I loved it! Shifter was butter, handling was telepathic, never gave me a single mechanical issue. All it needed was about another 50 or so whp to be perfect. Took it to Pike's peak, Death Valley, Tail of the Dragon, and various National Parks. Not a single hiccup, and I had a blast! I still miss it sometimes
I guess it depends on how the current 911 owners came into the brand. Those who first bought Boxsters/Caymans (then transitioned to the 911) probably won't have any animus towards them. However, those who jumped directly into 911's might. But, at the end of the day, I think the brand is exceptional, regardless of which model. Yes, some models have known issues, but the same could be said for pretty much every manufacturer...
More than a few buddies gave me “WTF” look when I bailed on a 992 Carrera S order to get a 718 Spyder. As a weekend/fun car…it was a no brainer. Better suspension/handling, brakes and (IMO) motor, rarer, and a bit less expensive. Definitely get shit, but the real ones get it. The ones that don’t, don’t matter.
I have been in my local Porsche club since my first 87 924 S. Since then have owned a 79. 930, 82 928 S, 89 944S2, 86 928 S, 89 928 S4, 87 944 and lastly my 2003 Speed yellow Boxster. Have never had any negative comments from our club members. Perhaps I have simply been lucky!
I’ve owned five Porsches and currently drive a 981 Cayman GTS. Someone (not a Porsche person) saw me with the car and asked if maybe someday I could “handle” a 911. I explained that I sold my 911 to get a Cayman, and that as a nationally certified HPDE instructor I could probably handle most cars. Maybe I was a douche, but it felt good.
Great video Will, did't see your comment post, but will add this...as an air-cooled and Boxster S owner, they really create different but equally fantasitic driving experiences. Enjoy what you've got, and as your one commentor said.."Fuggem"
Bought a brand new 986 Boxster S back in its second year of production; 2001. It was my first foray into the Porsche world. Traded in a ‘99 C5 for it. The experience was night and day. Loved both but for obviously different reasons. I was living in San Antonio at the time and was driving west down Loop 410 Highway. Was following too closely to the car ahead. It rear ended the car ahead of it and my instinctive reaction was to swerve into the right lane to avoid a chain reaction collision. By the time I turned the steering wheel the car was already making the turn. Was lucky to avoid a potential collision. Chalk it up to the mid engine dynamics and/or the telepathic steering response but it was then and there that I understood what they meant by “Porsche, there is no substitute”. My 986 saved me. I got into other cars afterwards like a 7 series and AMG E63 but eventually got back into a Porsche. Currently the steward of a 993 C(2)S
While it was the 911 that began my love of the brand at age 5 back in 1970, the first Porsche I ever imagined owning was the Boxster, which I fell in love with when it was introduced as a concept, and smitten with when the first test drives from R&T, C&D, Automobile and Sports Car Int'l arrived. My switch to a plan to buy a Cayman when at NORAD, turned back to a Boxster plan after driving both- soft top or no top was far more enjoyable than the frenetic cabin of the Cayman for easy driving. That plan turned into a Cayenne with the arrival of my son and need for more seats. Now the owner of a 991.2 911 Turbo Cab, I'd never be hating on any Porsche and especially not Boxster drivers. Anyone who has ever driven or knows anything about the Boxster, knows how fantastic the car is, that it has become an icon unto itself, and that it along with the Cayenne, saved the brand and made all that Porsche is today, possible.
The same is the case for those of us who are 928 owners. I’ve owned both the 911 and 928 and find the 928 a superior vehicle overall in comparison with 911’s of the same era. I loved my 911 but the 928 is a much better daily driver, more comfortable, and actually out handles a 911 due to the almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution. It’s a VERY underrated vehicle! I love both models but prefer the 928 overall.
I’ve had “snobs” who are so much into their “rear thrust” cars, snort in disdain at my beautiful Baltic Blue 944s2 Cabriolet. I’m mature enough and comfortable in my own skin (after five decades in the military and law enforcement) to not give them any concern. But….I would be lying if I didn’t admit to some “rear or mid-engine” envy….in fact, I’m on the fence right now between buying a 911 or a BoxsterS. I do enjoy your “say it like it is” videos.
4 cylinder Cayman S owner here. My car gets a ton of hate online. If I met these online people IRL, I doubt they’d say the same things they say online to my face. A lot of these people have never driven one and are just parroting reviewers’ opinion about the engine sound.
I owned a 718 Cayman and I thought it was an amazing car. It was the car I could afford at the time and a great introduction to Porsche ownership. As suggested though, there is this part of you (at least for me) that always saw the pinnacle of Porsche ownership as being the 911. I remember as a kid dreaming of owning one someday, so even though I truly did love my Cayman, I knew personally, I hadn't reached my goal of owning a 911 yet- that piece was always in the back of my mind- like I haven't hit my goal yet. I live in Southern California, and I will say that Porsche enthusiasts in the area invite me on drives out to Palm Springs now that I have a 993 and 911T, when I only owned my 718 Cayman, there we no invites by the community coming my way.
My brother has a 944 he is currently setting up for Auto cross. I considered doing the same, but he has been slow to finish this project because of yacht racing seems to be more fun for him.
If you grew up always wanting a 911, and then bought a 718, you settled (for whatever reason). I settled when I bought my first Porsche, a 944,; I grew up obsessing over 911s. If you discovered Porsche as an adult and gravitated toward a 718 for its own virtues, then congratulations on owning a dream car. It's all about where you started the journey. For me, anything other than a 911 was settling. I've owned 2 (still have one of them) and now I'm considering a 718 as a daily driver and am looking for a good quality 944 to add to my collection. Our PCA group supports and encourages everyone, no prejudice or shaming here (even toward the Cayenne and Macan owners).
I have owned all models and each does their own thing well. Fun on the streets-boxter/cayman hands down. 911-track and car shows. Love them each for different reasons.
I am an owner of a 2017 Cayman S and think there is a perspective that should unite the debate. Porsches are purpose built sports cars, all of them (excepting the incredible success of the Porsche SUVs). Unlike a BMW, that no matter how good it might be, is a modified sedan, Porsches are singularly built for performance. The Porsche Cayman continually performs at the top of its class, and though it is a sibling to the iconic 911, it is no less of a car. I have driven various 911 models at the Porsche Experience track, as well as various Cayman models, and they are both thrilling. I actually prefer my mid engine layout for the cabin, and I might get into a higher performance Cayman, but am not sure a 911 suits me. I have Porsche liners, nets, and tie downs in the frunk and hatch, and it is incredibly versatile in what you can haul. I don’t think I would ever use the wasted back seats of the 911. So if you have chosen to drive a Porsche, you recognize the quality and have made a wise decision in my mind, regardless of the model.
Interesting comment by Martin H about the GT1 being a Porsche “Holy Grail”. Two points: 1. The street-legal version (and some race versions) had the original “fried egg” headlights, that also draw scorn from some 911 owners. 2. It was actually more like a Boxster/Cayman than a 911 because Porsche engineers knew that its mid-engine layout gave performance/handling advantages.
Great video, Will. I recently sold my 1992 964 to buy a 2016 CGTS. Years ago I had the opportunity to drive everything at the Porsche Barber Motorsports school and fell in love with the Cayman. It isn’t a 911, but the Cayman driving experience from behind the wheel is what sold me. And I made enough on the trade to upgrade to the Musicar Stage 3 audio upgrade. I’m a mid-engine lover and I actually use the radio too - should I just go ahead and cancel my PCA membership now? Always love your content and presentation!
At Lime Rock during ALMS racing, the pits are wide open to spectators. I took my time looking over the GT class 911's and guess what? They're Caymans with 911 bodies. Their excuse is that it is for aerodynamics but I'm well aware that the engine in front of the rear axle makes the weight bias so much better. The reason Porsche has kept the Cayman lower powered than the 911 is because if they were equal, the Cayman would trounce the 911 out on the road course.
I talked to a pro driver who has driven both the GT4RS Clubsport and the GT3 Cup car, both with same engine. He said Cup car still faster with pro driver.
I have a Boxster, and belong to the PCA, there are a lot of Boxster owners in it. There are a few 911 owners that kinda come across as tolerating Boxster owners.
As a Porsche outsider, looking in. It always seemed to me, the “911” purchase is the, fulfilling a goal, then, you by the Cayman as the “fun” let your hair down experience. Like, they’re a package deal that compliment each other, and since you have both, haters be damned.
I have had some 911 owners who have not been rude, but have been somewhat dismissive of me having a 981 Cayman GTS. Others have been totally friendly and welcoming. I chose the 981 because I enjoyed the driving experience and size more than a recent 911, which did not feel as nimble or quite as much of a sports car to me. Overall I have found true Porsche enthusiasts to be a great crew!
I’ve been owning 911 variants since the early 80’s. I admit to having looked down on the Boxster when it first came out. That viewpoint was based in ignorance. I’ve since owned and sold 3 Boxster variants and 1 Cayman. They are absolutely brilliant cars. I am a driving enthusiast with 20 years of track experience mostly in a converted 986 Boxster S race car. Wow is this a brilliant chassis! I still am a diehard 911 fan, owning a 993, but I’d love to add another Boxster to my garage some day. It’s really the perfect sports car!
As an air cooled 911 owner, I legit just love cars, I'll never throw shade at someone for owning a certain car, there were times where I couldn't afford much but the passion was still there. I can find something great about all model Porsches and frankly, most all model cars. I do however think Porsche is the greatest and the 911 is peak.
I started a local run group a few years ago and none of us look down on Boxsters. We’ve had a handful join our group and never heard that talk. It IS a thing online imho. For ME, the 911 is my fav Porsche, 996 is my fav 911. I like the Boxster Spyder a lot, but I LOVE my 911😊
I love when people judge me and my 986 boxster. As I have other Porsche's most will never be able to afford. It really is about loving the brand for me.
Well, after having owned 10 different 911’s (4x964c2/C4/Turbo,1x 993C2, 2x 996C4/GT3, 2x 997C2/C2S) all of which besides the 996C4 were manual box cars, and had a beautiful manual CarreraT at the time the 992 came out in late 2019, I felt a little lost for what to do. I didn’t gel with the 992C2S and 992C4S I got to sample from My dealer and I didn’t like either the size of the car, the look of the rear end and neither fancied the style of the interior, especially the gear lever and the instrument cluster and all round just found the car a bit numb and clinical. Sound wasn’t on par with my CarreraT by a mile either. So what should I do? My T was getting a lot of use and I could just stick with it (pun intended😂), but had increasingly been feeling a bit bored with more or less the same iteration of car over the years, so I started eying the exotic Italian car dealers and had a go in a few prancing horses and raging bulls just to feel out my options in going forward. But had to stick with Porsche due to lacking dealer network as the nearest Ferrari/Lamborghini dealer was in a neighboring country and I just couldn’t see myself spending so much time and money on getting my cars in for service and since I always drive my cars a ton of miles so I was a bit worried about depreciation issues also. So I was growing tired of the 911 platform but couldn’t stomach the hassle of an Italian exotic. Then a picture of a brand new never before seen Porsche model was sent to me from a friend of mine. Ferrari layout, mid engine, big wing, rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated engine. So I jumped on the phone to my dealer and got my allocator this new GT Porsche never before to be seen and never to released again in another iteration. I now own what I consider to be the most fun Porsche ever made. @viola_gt4rs
Idea for a video, I was wondering what you think about the influencer/trust fund crowd moving from Lambos to 911s, Porsches used to fly under the radar but it seems like everyone wants one, and it did 2 things: priced out the cars for average enthusiasts, and turned them into status symbols rather than driving machines
I think Bring A Trailer played a huge role in there somewhere as well. Makes me sad that regular driving enthusiasts have been pushed out of many brands and models that used to be within reach. Too easy for a drunk rich dude to bid up an SC to $70K that used to be $30K before the pandemic and before BaT got really big.
I agree, the prices in 2021 far exceeded their values in BaT auctions. I was looking into Caymans but I couldn't justify it based on total cost of ownership in 2022, eventually I want to daily a 911 but after working for a few years. Thanks for the reply@@Rennthusiast
At least in our PCA world, some Porsche owners may have 911s, Boxsters, AND Caymans, frequently the latter are their track vehicles. I've owned all three. A 987 Cayman was my first Porsche and the best car I ever owned, my 718 Boxster S served me well for 7 years when I was leading our drive and dine committee (no better spring, early summer or early fall sports car, though on rainy days I wished I had a Cayman), and now I love my 992 Carrera T. All great examples of what Porsche can do. The Boxster and Cayman are the best handling Porsches, period, but I will admit the unique driving aspects of the 911 (probably less so now than in the past when it was even more rear-weight-biased), when you adjust to them in autocross, make you a better driver. I only wish I had autocrossed the Cayman and Boxster when I had them. To be honest, the only people I see that denigrate the mid-engine Porsche platforms as somehow lesser Porsches are west coast people and the British car media. And maybe Porsche themselves for a long time, trying to deliberately keep the 987/981/718 platform from being faster and more capable than the 911, at least until the GT4 was introduced. I think the GT4 RS changed a few peoples' minds, though. And to be honest, it was much easier getting an allocation for a Carrera T than a 718 GTS 4.0.
Not an owner but appreciate to brand. Keeping it 💯 Porsche would not exist today without starting to build other models besides the 911. All of them are great vehicles in whatever segment of the market they are competing in.
There is a song called “Jesus is a Capricorn” that contains the lyric “Everybody needs somebody that they can look down on.” That mindset might apply to this situation. If you are considering what others think about you as a factor in your decision process, you may not be making the right choices for you. If I thought owning a 911 would bring me more joy, I would consider buying one.
I was a member of the Hurricane Raleigh/Durham region for years and never experienced this. Many members had a 911 and Boxster or Cayman. The only people that made such a comment like this were a non Porsche owner.
Had a 944, then a 986 base Boxster and now a 997S. Love them all. They all have their own special qualities. The only thing is that I found both the 944 and the Boxster underpowered but they fixed that now with the latest models. The truth is that people will never admire the Boxster as much as the 911 prestige wise because it is always seen as the entry level sports car. It’s the same with both models if you own the base Boxster or 911…owners of the S will think they are superior to you and so on. I had a guy at a stoplight ask me when I was in my Boxster, “why not the S?” 😁
I think it’s becoming more known now with Porsche doing ‘poor man’s 911’ ie lightened models with less power eg 992 Carrera T. Also I’ve noticed base models 981 perhaps because it’s lighter produces more average cornering g’s than the S or Gt4 models. There’s the lightened 981 Spyder as well. In a lot of these models you can get more performance just by selecting options such as light weight buck ts and Pccb. People should be less critical of the models of Porsches. There all great
My PTS GT4 was more expensive than a lot of 911s. I have both a 718 GT4 manual and a 992 GTS cab PDK and love them both in different ways and for different reasons. Very different experiences, which is why I like the combo. I get it, though, because I admit I do turn my nose up at the SUVs, even the Turbo GT.
I fit into your kumbaya category. I'm a 911 driver but drive with a local group that has more Caymans and Boxsters. We have a blast together zorching through the local twisties! Believe it or not, we even welcome the occasional Macan, Cayenne or Panamera. 😀
The original 356 was mid engined Gmund built and only changed for practical and economical reasons for production. I've owned my 911 for 31 years and been in PCA that long and NEVER heard any such criticism of other models. 914, 944 especially were always welcome and I've driven with excellent instructors that owned both as well as 911s and learned a lot from everyone, especially the 914 drivers. However I will say that my 981 Boxter GTS (manual x73) is the best all around sports car in the history of sports cars. But I still enjoy my 911, ...a lot.
I think one area that the Boxster/Cayman comes out on top is the "fun factor". The combination of lightweight, mid-engine, combined to a Porsche flat 6 (and a convertable top in the case of Boxsters) is hard to beat. love both the 911 and the Boxster/Cayman platforms. That said I own a modded 02 3.2 liter 986 Boxster S, fitted with Fabspeed Exhaust, IPD Plenum/TB, Numeric Shifter etc etc... I wouldn't trade it for a modded 996 with the same level of modification for example.... although I'd still like to have that too; probably track it since it's a coupe 😂
ive driven both and i have to say that the boxser/cayman is really enjoyable because its so small and nimble, however, I bought a 911 because it's so iconic! i could see myself buying a cayman in the future though!
I'd be interested in seeing how it plays out when we separate out people who bought a 911 because it's a good car and who bought a 911 as a status symbol. I'm guessing those who have a 911 because it's a great driver's car and not as a status symbol don't look down at the Cayman/Boxster crowd as much. Either way, I'm excited for my Cayman to arrive (less than 2 months!). I'm not worried if others turn their nose up to it.
Nice video. 997 owner that also have a z4 of the same vintage. do I look down on the z4, nope. Just as the Boxter, it is just different but such fun to drive. Want to get a Boxter eventually. Totally different driving experiences and a ton of fun either way.
I have a 996.2 911 (that I love) and was told by someone (by their own admission) who has never owned/driven a Porsche, that it wasn't a real 911 because of the headlights. I then said (among other things), "So I suppose you're one of those knobs that reckon a Boxster/Cayman isn't a real Porsche either?" He said, "No they're not." I was going to suggest that he should perhaps at least drive one, or both, before having an opinion. I thought better of it. Why waste your time with an oxygen thief? "I said, "Good talk mate, see ya." I'd have either in a heartbeat. I've driven quite a few Boxster's and there's plenty to love. Haters gonna hate.
It’s always has been the same when I was young it was the same when I owed a 924S for 15 years ,I was always looked down from other 911 oweners but I love my 924S I enjoyed some much that I missed my Porsche until now
I’ll pause at 4 minutes…… I experienced exactly the opposite at a local gathering. I was the lone 911 amongst some Boxster / Caymans……and they were less than interested in including me in the “pop-up” gathering. It really doesn’t have to be this way, folks !
I've owned both and I still have the Boxster, but I can't comment as I don't know anyone with a 911 nor do I know anyone with a Boxster or Cayman so I'm unlikely to ever have this conversation.
I am an air cooled 911 enthusiast. I’d be lying if I said I don’t look down on the water cooled cars even the ones that are are 2-3 times the cost of mine. I hold absolutely no envy towards those cars .
That's interesting, after owning several 911s I bought a Cayman S manual. It was less than a year before I got bored of it and sold it. It's a good car, but it doesn't give you the same thrill as the 911. I've never had a GT4 or GT4 RS, and might consider one of them in the future. Like yourself though, I am always polite to all Porsche fans. If you think judgement exists for Boxsters/Caymans, pull up to a PCA event in a 944 and see how much you get snubbed...
I own both a 981 Cayman S and a 992 Carrera T, both great cars and frankly people in the local PCA aren’t rude or ignorant of towards either or any of the Porsche cars.
Great point…there’s been derision towards 996’s for a long time, but I think there’s a recent respect and affection for them: ua-cam.com/video/wYse1JLfF5k/v-deo.htmlsi=7pqRKxdSVeObVTcX
Don't forget the "hey, I can't toss my coat in the backseat" crowd. When I traded the 911SC for a Boxster GTS my spouse immediately pointed out this major flaw of the mid-engine p-car. 🤣
That some water-cooled 911 owners are looking down on Boxsters or Caymens proves that it's just Snobbery, plain and simple. These cars are mechanically very similar.
At least the 911 crew grudgingly acknowledges Boxster/Cayman models as Porsches. Show up to the Cars and Coffee Porsche section in a Panamera/Taycan/Macan/Cayenne and they will tell you to park with the general public. I used to have a 991 Carrera S and the GT3/GT3RS crew would look down on my car as well. Human nature shows us that everyone needs someone to feel superior to, I guess.
Pretty sure the reason we are able to still purchase 911, is because the Boxster and Boxster owners saved Porsche from going bankrupt, As a 911 owner I say THANK YOU Boxster owners you and the cars rock.
ua-cam.com/video/z8RDTsr9POA/v-deo.html Fun informative video in context of this Rennthusiast video.. Btw, at 10:32 min it's explained how Porsche tuned down the Cayman/Boxster to not outperform the (flagship much more expensive) 911 model..
I have a 2003 Boxster S. My car is amazing I don't give a rats ass what anyone thinks. Would I buy a 911, maybe? Would I most likely switch my Boxster for another Boxster? Definately.
Someone once said, "A Boxster is what you buy when you can't afford in a 911" But I suppose that applies to nearly every other car 😂 Anyway, I loved my Boxster and never got any negative comments.
I have a 986 Boxster outside and a 991 in the garage... LOVE the 911, really like the Boxster. Different cars, and different uses. 986 is nice mid-engine... but not as good as the 360.. ;)
We wouldn’t have the 911 if it weren’t for the Boxster. We probably wouldn’t have either now, or at least not the level of innovation, without the Cayenne and the Macan. This support allowed the Carrera GT and 918. R&D is business.
the body lines on the 911 are objectively appealing to the human eye. it’s instinctual. the same cannot be said of the cayman, and certainly not the boxter.
I have a Boxster and my local Porsche group has been great. Most of the 911 owners came from Boxsters, Caymans or 944s. Very supportive group.
If it helps, us 911 owners can remember that Ferrari owners think of us as driving glorified VWs
but they are driving a fiat 😂😂
@@ravenmaster6364 Ferrari Was never originally owned by fiat and spent a small period of time owned by fiat. Get the facts straight.Ferrari is way above Porsche.
I’ll never forget what a wealthy man said when he was discussing cars. He said he would never buy a Ferrari due to the “wanker factor”. That always stuck with me lol.
You don't want to own a Ferrari. Why? Because as aerodynamic as they are, their drivers, who are bald, are even more aerodynamic.
@@MichaelBrown-pg5dy If it helps, some of us Ferrari owners also love Porsches.
Your OP has however brought out posts from others that let the wider Porsche community down with childish and tribal comments.
People who give you crap for a Boxster simply haven't driven one. The 718 Spyder is the best driving car there is. Straight up.
Cayman owner here. Great car. Very likely more car than can be enjoyed legally on the streets. 👍
Amen RE who cares what people thing
That 4.0 and color is killer!
Nothing to be hassled over. The Cayman and Boxster GTS 4.0 are awesome looking, and the engines are delicious! Good for you!
The only shade I ever get, as a launch year 986 owner, is from non P-car owners. People who haven’t experienced the brand but have opinions on it don’t matter to me.
If you own a p-car, cool, your opinion is valid, if not, keep walking 🤣👍
I’ll add to this One personal opinion.
@@heelntoe3982 same 👍
As a 996 owner, I look down on no one, because, well, 996 owner. BUT, there is absolutely some hardcore snobbery out there, although that's present in EVERY hobby and all walks of life.
I'm a 996 owner and a hater of everything porsche makes that's not a 911.
awesome@@Clesarie
I own both a 718 Spyder and 997 Carrara S convertible, and could not care less what people think.
It’s like the Harley guys looking down at Sportster riders. Hey Sportie! 🤣
Just bought an 02 Boxster S for$6500
Be my fifth one
Never had a problem with any of them
Always kept them for a year or two and usually made money on them
Ultra cheap fun
Love any 911 but I’m an Uber cheap bass turd
Putting my money into my 2 240z card
I’m 6’6” and use a shoehorn to get into the Boxster

If someone talks down on the Boxster or Cayman it just tells me they have no idea what they’re talking about.
Air cooled 911 and 718 cayman owner. It like my kids, love them all but they are all different and I appreciate them all in their own way.
I have a 2010 911 997, a 2001 boxster s, and a 2018 bmw m2. The boxster s is the most fun to drive by far. Don’t hate!
Thank you for watching and for the support. 🙏🏼
4 cylinder Cayman S owner here. My car gets a ton of hate online. If I met these online people IRL, I doubt they’d say the same things they say online to my face. A lot of these people have never driven one and are just parroting reviewers’ opinion about the engine sound.
Any Porsche is better than no Porsche
Had lots of VW’s, Audi, BMW, But never owned a Porsche. Thinking about getting one.
My brother has a 944 he is currently setting up for Auto cross. I considered doing the same, but he has been slow to finish this project because of yacht racing seems to be more fun for him.
Wife wants a Cayenne 😣😞🤮🤬
Best video you’ve ever done btw!
What wasted energy, we should all focusing on the people we should be looking down on, Macan and Cayenne drivers
😂
😂😂😂😂

I’m a 911 owner that wants to own a 718 spyder.
I'm on my second boxster, first one was a 97 that I put 100K miles on, now on a 987.1 and loving it.
I really don’t understand people who look down on others in general. What kind of person are you?
I didn’t gel with the 992C2S and 992C4S I got to sample from
My dealer and I didn’t like either the size of the car, the look of the rear end and neither fancied the style of the interior, especially the gear lever and the instrument cluster and all round just found the car a bit numb and clinical.
Then a picture of a brand new never before seen Porsche model was sent to
me from a friend of mine.
@viola_gt4rs
I first owned a 2016 cayman manual. Loved the car, but I really needed an AWD for snow situations and honestly love my 911 turbo more.
Not an owner but appreciate to brand. Keeping it 💯 Porsche would not exist today without starting to build other models besides the 911. All of them are great vehicles in whatever segment of the market they are competing in.
Love my first Porsche. A 2014 Boxster 981 2.7 PDK. I've have it for two months now. Thinking about a PSE. Love the car.
where did you get that porsche neon sign…. i want one sooo badly
As a deeply appreciative Cayman owner, I try very hard to not to look down on 911 drivers. 🤣
Someone who gets it. And much as thought I admire the 911, I smiled a little when I found out that the GT1 had a mid-engined layout.
I'm not worried if others turn their nose up to it.
i own a 996 and 3 986s..... love them all but want a cayman..... my ? is.... can i swap drivelines and make my 911 into a cayman?
It’s always has been the same when I was young it was the same when I owed a 924S for 15 years ,I was always looked down from other 911 oweners but I love my 924S I enjoyed some much that I missed my Porsche until now
I honestly couldn't GAF about what anyone says about my Cayman. The day i can pay for something with someone else's opinion is when I'll care.
how would a 911 owner react to someone telling them that a 968 is a more rounded driving machine?
I’ll pause at 4 minutes……
I experienced exactly the opposite at a local gathering.
I used to feel the same way.
Not 996 owners, We understand being looked down upon and are a lot more accepting of anything with a Porsche badge.
Great point…there’s been derision towards 996’s for a long time, but I think there’s a recent respect and affection for them: ua-cam.com/video/wYse1JLfF5k/v-deo.htmlsi=7pqRKxdSVeObVTcX
We look down on cabriolets, not boxster/caymans. Boxster 981 topdown carving through roads on beautiful day. 🔥
P.S. this is a joke.

Fun informative video in context of this Rennthusiast video..
Definately.
I had a 914 in high school so I like Boxsters. But my mechanic says they're a pain to work on.
I've owned both. Still will always say the Boxster was way more fun to drive.
Someone once said, "A Boxster is what you buy when you can't afford in a 911" But I suppose that applies to nearly every other car 😂
Anyway, I loved my Boxster and never got any negative comments.
People do the same thing to 914 owners. BTW when the 914 came out in 1970 it beat all the 911 cars at Lemans.
I have a 986 Boxster outside and a 991 in the garage... LOVE the 911, really like the Boxster. Different cars, and different uses. 986 is nice mid-engine... but not as good as the 360.. ;)
I have both 911 997 and Boxster 987 spyder and love both. Spyder is a keeper.
For sure. I drove my 981 Spyder today. Gorgeous weather, top down, PSE on (of course).
Have both Caymans and 911’s here. I put more miles on my 718 and find them more enjoyable to drive.
