- My attempt at tackling the Jim Steinman/Meat Loaf epic title track of the 1977 opus.
Big shout out to the vocal talent of Jimmy and Sam on this one.

Honestly, one of the best covers I've seen. It's rare that a cover of a 1970's Wagnerian power ballad restores my faith in humanity. This one has done so.

The mix for me is a little harsh, but don't let that diminish the epic quality and dedication. Stallman + Aday was a hell of a combination.... Rip to both legends
I was kind of trying to model the production of the original a bit with this cover. As much as I love the arrangements and playing on the record, I feel that the mix was a bit harsh in spots (especially how piercing Todd's guitar tone can get when all those leads get layered). It was kind of an intentional artistic choice and if I'd been mixing it more like a modern tune I would've gone a very different direction. So honestly I'm gonna take that as a bit of compliment because it had the intended effect!

Pretty Fkn badas!! Props to all the musicians. My older brother used to CRANK this album (on an 8 track) in his 1970 Chevelle. When this record came out in 78' it, like the other earth-shattering records that came out in 78', ala VH1, Cars (Cars), it truly changed my world view. I miss my brother, he's been called home, but I think of him all the time-especially when this tune is playing. Now, I'm going to put on the original and listen to that, too.

It's a little funny because I only had the singer available for 1 day to get the whole track done and it's really like trying to sing 3 songs right after each other. I ended up doing the ending screams because throughout we were trying to pace it so that he didn't blow himself out, but we kept putting off the high C. By the time we left it for the end I just hopped in and did it myself.
This song alone takes so much stamina that I could not imagine having to sing lead on it live night after night, and then go on to do all the other material in the setlist! I sang 'Paradise By the Dashboard Light' in a karaoke type setting before and that one alone tires you out completely...
He didn't manage it. He wrecked his voice. Took several years to get it back. Similar thing happened to Idina menzel from Wicked.

Very cool cover. The only comment I really would make is some delay and reverb would have sealed the deal. And the tempo shifts on the original are really, really apparent if you listen to this and have the original committed to memory.

No I'm a bit too attached to it, but the same one comes up for listing on Reverb from time to time. I had mine modded a little so to get it exactly like that you would just need to change out the pick guard and add the long vibrola to it yourself (but they do come stock as a 3 pickup configuration). That Firebird is the Phoenix model by Dillion.
I might be able to export the midi file if you want me to email it, however the piano track on this cover was a combination of two separate takes/piano sounds on different tracks so I'd probably send them both separately and you could piece them together into a single take on your end if you'd like. If you'd like the isolated piano audio I can also bounce those separate or together, however be warned that I'm only an intermediate keyboardist so some of my piano parts might sound a bit sloppy when they are isolated.

Is it just me or does the singer look a bit like Captain Nixon from Band of Brothers?
You need a Fender Mustang for the correct tremolo (ab)use in the solo parts.
Too many guitars already lol, but agreed. Each of the Fender tremolo designs have their own quirks/sound but I just tried to make the most out of what I already had with my Strat. The mustang also has a particular pickup tone that you don't get on the others.
Normally if I have the appropriate gear I'll try to use it ( I have a Line 6 Variax I've used on other covers to get certain sounds)
Did you make this track ?
Yes! I recorded everything from scratch just using stock virtual instruments in Logic Pro X for the drums and keyboards, with my Line 6 Helix Stomp for all of the guitar and bass parts.

@@samhughessinging Love me some Elton John, but unfortunately this is pretty much a hobby thing for me these days. I made the jump into working mainly in live audio a few years back and only really do work as a musician when I have the spare time (which during the pandemic was quite a bit).

The piano, guitars, and drums are fantastic. They've managed to replicate almost the exact sound and ambience of the original studio recording. Vocals are not great, no offense, but this is tremendously hard to sing a la Meat Loaf. Can be done if you've got the right vocal range and voice, but should be attempted by professionals only.
every time someone tries this, the guitar and the vocals, especially the vocals are so weak, weak.
Great instrumentals. Vocals really let me down, unfortunately. Nobody can match Meat, obviously, but man, listening to this guy sing hurt my throat and made me cringe. He was really straining and looked like he was in pain. Then in those final notes, the backup singer was doing the high notes? Why, because the lead singer couldn't hit them? If you can't hit the notes, don't sing the song. Sorry. It's an incredibly difficult song to sing, no doubt, so I give him kudos for trying. But if you're rehearsing a song and you just can't hit the notes, just accept it and don't even try to record it. It's a disservice to Meatloaf and to yourself.
