I just bought a vanderhall it has a wood steering wheel that someone painted black so your video will help me I’ll sand it down and refinish it like you did thank you😎👍🏻
Restore might be a stretch. Refinish the wood is more accurate. The number one and two priorities for choosing the finish should be UV and moisture resistant. It's going to see a lot of sunlight and sweat from your hands. Recommend you shop for a finish at a marine hardware store and choose a finish meant for boats (look for anything used on "bright work").
Good work on the wheel restoration. It's *Moto Lita*, btw. Not Moto Lisa. These wheels are from the UK, and Shelby put these wheels on his Shelby Mustangs when he first started making them.
Beautiful job refinishing that wheel! Do you have any tips for cleaning wood steering wheels? I have a 1966 Mustang with an original wood steering wheel that I’m trying to erase years of dirt from, and I don’t want to do any harm to the wood. Also, thanks for this awesome tutorial, it was super helpful!
This is my question I have a MARDI GARA wood steering wheel is natural color I want to have it done like a cherry red glossy color can you canake a video please my car is a red interior
TAKE NOTE! You get WAY less views doing videos like this vs doing them are on your car for a reason haha :) can't wait for more Suby vids! And your video quality is SPOT on!
the sanding part, also as a luthier, was painful to watch, you destroyed the original roundness and flattened the finger's rest. You should've used a paint stripper, or even nitro thinner, as most likely the paint was nitro based, judging also from the wear on it. That would've been super easy (albeit a bit smelly) done outside with a respirator. more likely "HOW TO RUIN A WOOD STEERING WHEEL"
6 1/2 hours later is the most honest thing I've seen in one of these UA-cam tutorials.... like ever lol

Man that looks sick with the gloss varnish! What grit did you sand with? I'd be scared I'd square off the wheel or something lol

What girt sandpaper did you use?
admrob I think I was using 230 grit
Thanks. Just got one off e-bay for my MG ($90 and some elbow grease is better than ~$400.)
admrob nice 👍 send me a photo on IG if you get a chance once you're done I would love to see it.
Did it really take 6 1/2 hours to sand it?
Nah
@@BlakesGarage oh good lol! That was going to turn me off from doing mine lol! What grit sand paper did you use?
Thanks blake for the vid..
No problem 👍

It's Moto Lita .. not Lisa. A British Steering wheel company that supplied the original A/C Cobra. www.moto-lita.co.uk/
Dan Blake, he looks nice.

+KoG GoK Thanks! That would be an interesting looking interior.

it's a Moto-Lita, with a t not an s.
MOTO LITA
I think you can learn more about this on Stodoys plans.
I prefer to build with Woodglut plans.
I made it with Woodglut plans!
I made it by myself. I used Woodprix woodworking plans for that.
