Sometimes the perfect advice lands right in your lap. I ordered a new aquarium top that was just about a ¼" too wide. I had a feeling that on a cut that thin, the old score & snap method would result in tears and profanity. This video really made the cut and made things a lot clearer for me.
It turned out very well. It was a hard cut to make because of the plastic hinge getting in the way of the last ¼”. This made that little bit a little jagged. I got everything all smoothed out with some coarse emery cloth and the Dremel. The tapping and pressing technique that was demonstrated worked perfectly.
Why did I watch this video AFTER I just did my first long, thin cutoff? My edge looks like someone chewed the strip off. The next one is going to look a lot better, thanks to this video.

I tried this today on a broken pane which had 3 or 4 jagged 'sawteeth' 3" deep across it. I put some masking tape across the jags before tapping away. To my surprise it actually work 100%.
Ohhh, My dumbass was just sporadically tapping all over the place hoping for the best, sometimes the obvious and most efficient technique is the simple ones, great stuff xD

You could also just use your fingers. That lookes like 1/8th or 5/32nd inch float glass. Putting the second knuckle of your index finger right under the score, and then using your thumb for leverage you can pop off the whole strip in one go and leaves a much less jagged edge face
Useful, I'm struggling to find anywhere that sells 28" wide horticultural glass that my greenhouse seems to require, the nearest I can find is 28 3/4" panes used in Dutch type greenhouses so I may have to have a go at cutting off the 3/4"
i need to get 3-4 mm off of 6 mm thick glass will it be do able this way, he mentioned cutting a quarter of an inch off witch is 6,35mm, is there a limit to how thin of a piece you can cut off?

I wish I kept looking for this how-to. I had ordered 3 French windows and the last 6 panes wouldn't fit any way or how. 1 is too long and 5 are too wide, all by about 1/4" to 5/8". Thankfully most are at the top so rain doesn't get in and the one at the bottom I just tape clear plastic over it so stray cats don't try to jump into the house, lol. The hardware was charging $2/inch to cut glass (exchange rate then was closer to 6:1 so about usd 30¢/inch.) Some also need corners cut to fit where the welding has bumps, so almost $140 total. A friend gave me a glass cutter that he wasn't using and I got as far as labeling the panes and marking where to cut; I was certain it wouldn't be a score-and-break situation as the piece is so narrow... and just never got around to looking it up. Finally I can finish my windows! Will need new putty though, not looking forward to seeing the price of that now.
I am looking to cut very small squares of glass, from only a slightly bigger piece of glass. For example, the original peice is going to be around 30x30x1mm, and I need to cut 5x5mm squares from it. Is this going to be easy to do with your method?
Before you crack it, after you score it, you should wet the score mark with water, for an easier cut, and wear a respiratory mask to combat silicosis man.
The description says "using just a glass cutter" so those of us with basic tools can still do it ourselves.. but I will look that up and see if by chance my dad had one. (He fixed cars and did woodworking. I got the glass cutter from a friend.)
Ok, I just gave it a try and it was a disaster. Unfortunately, I did not notice that their was glue (tape residue) when I made the first sore. I tried to save some of the glass by cutting a smaller piece but by then their was a crack that kept getting larger. Be sure the glass surface is smooth. Something as small as tape residue can mess up your score. On top of everything else I wound up cutting myself slightly while trying to SAFELY wrap the broken glass in a piece of cardboard so I could write CAUTION BROKEN GLASS. Just not my day I guess. I'll try one more time.
From someone who had to dispose of a shattered rear windshield because the guys who replaced it didn't take it with them, wrap the glass first in newspaper or a thick fabric like old toweling, next tape/tie it if nec, and then wrap/fold the cardboard over it. Oh and use the widest tape you have to keep it closed. Edit: or fold masking tape over the thin pointy ends, leaving some space between the tip of the glass and where you bend the tape. Again, widest tape you have. Can't imagine trying to bend strings with cut fingers >.< All the best, man.
Nice video. How thick is the glass you cut? Í need to shave a bit off the bottom of a shower door. Would you use the same method when I only need a few mm off?
Just snap it off with your thumb and index finger lol no need to be tapping all the way down the crack lol I would have that off in less than a second after the score
Yep, same here. Followed the instructions dutifully, but could not get the score to run no matter how hard I hammered and applied pressure on a miserable 4mm thick sheet which eventually just cracked in half.

I failed miserably at trimming a thin strip off a mirror. Now I know what the ball hammer end is for!
Should I use this method to cut 1/16” off?
So, I have a 10mm thick glass at 1.5 meters and 150mm wide which I want to split do the length. Would this method work?
How about sandwich glass 10+10mm thick
I would just use glazing pliers, gentle downward pressure behind the run and go the whole length. Faster.

His cutter has the oil reservoir, maybe that's why he didn't wet it? Mine doesn't so I appreciate this info.
There's no need to tap all the way, it will come off easily with a grozier plier

If your shower door is tempered you CAN NOT cut it, it will shatter.
