Tip 1 03:17 Only score the glass once. Repeating will dull the blade.
Tip 2 03:42 Hold cutter 90 degrees vertically. If you tilt the cutter, the glass will break at an angle.
Tip 3 04:15 Hold even pressure. Try to score across rather than from top to bottom.
05:18 How to break the glass.
    05:48 Running pliers

Helpful and well explained, however I was cringing the whole time due to the lack of gloves being worn. Direct cut or a tiny fleck on bare skin and then you rub your eyes. Please wear gloves people. Glass doesn't always break the way you expect it to, and may have an unseen fault line.

Is professional high volume cutting the carbide wheel lasts 1-2 weeks. We replaced them regularly. Pliers were only used to per say chip chunks of a bad run. Most people don’t understand what running the glass is . It’s basically tapping the score edge start and using both hands with finger pressure in a lifting motion causing the fracture to follow the cut line.

I really appreciated your video. I have watched several videos before this one even passed up watching this. The other videos I had so many questions as to why this why that what about this what about that. This is very confusing and then trying to watch five other videos and put them all together I still had so many questions and watching your video every question was answered. I would even begin to ask myself a question but you'd already be in the process of answering the question I was gonna ask . The most informative, easy to understand, you demonstrated what you were speaking of. While showing a variety of tools available explaining how they work, why they work the way they do. Not only for beginners but also for those who think they know the most about glass cutting. Thank you. When I have a few minutes of spare time soon, I'll be exploring your page too learn more about things I didn't know I needed to know. Thank you very much 10 stars. P.s. watching " how it's made" and other popular learning shows unfortunately did not answer any, ( not a single 1) of my questions. Good job!!!

@@heatherdawson4146 I attempted to cut the canopy I just bought and broke it :( I bought glass samples from a local glass shop to practice and thought I nailed it, but I clearly I am still learning. My error was trying to rework some marginal cuts I made and it kept getting worse. My problem was cutting an arc. Your video tip to cut extra arcs helped a lot, but still not quite proficient. Your video are well done. Two recommendations for future improvement: buy glass from a home improvement store or get scraps from glass shop to build your skill before making the cut that matters. Second might just be related to my own inexperience, avoid improving a cut that is acceptable, but not perfect. For me, I kept digging a deeper hole. We have a plecostomus and four rainbows in a 30 gal tank that have remained healthy despite this being our first aquarium! Great memory you must have from your childhood and awesome that you have the skill to cut your own canopy. I might too one day!

Practice makes perfect! (Or at least a little better each time..!) Sometimes there can be problems with cutting unknown or aged glass. The glass can have internal stresses that will ruin the best planned cuts. And I would agree that trying to improve on a mediocre cut can make it a disaster. Often, it’s best to do small touchups with a grinder. I would recommend using a piece of wet/dry sandpaper with a wood block, and just running over the edge to take the sharp edge off for handling the glass once you have the size cut to what you need. Saves fingers when handling the canopy afterwards 🙃

@@heatherdawson4146 I punted and had a glass shop cut a new piece to replace what I broke. That turned into a great conversation. The guy cut it freehand with the same tool I was using. Says a lot for 22 years of experience vs. my two UA-cam video views and ten practice cuts :) Instead of a $50 tank canopy, they can cut a custom canopy for half the price. They will also build a silicone hinge using aquarium silicone which has low acid, but takes a week to cure. This is much better than the plastic hinge that came with the one I bought. The glass shop told me that the plastic hinge will yellow and fail within ~2 years. The silicone hinge is not as flexible as the plastic hinge, but will last a long time.
