@monomachine After all these years I just found out what synth they used on this song! Thanks dude!!! Always loved the opening synth line in the Original 1984/85 version of Subculture. Had suspected it was a Prophet 5 she was using... But this just proves otherwise. Voyetra 8 eh? I want THAT SYNTH!!!! :p
Yeah they had the Voyetra on a almost every song between 1984 and 1987…I believe the main melody heard at the beginning is a layered patch. Also, most synth parts (including the lead melody) were written by Barney but were performed on stage by Gillian.
This was back in 1987? Wow - i remember this was the first NO song i ever heard - in 1986- before they went and tried to make it into a more techno remix with the added vocals of that awful sounding woman and all the other synthesizing and other extra messing up of the song. What made "Subculture" so mesmorizing to me was how it sounded so emotional and "raw" ~ sort of like they recorded the song in their garage but still great quality sound. All of Their classics, like The Perfect Kiss, Bizar
Lyrically poetic too! I didn't really care for all that techno rubbish element either, Just some catchy hooks, interesting, rhythmic sounds with unique storylines. But most off all- It was that VOYETRA 8!!! Okay, and Bernard's imperfect but pleasing voice, and that bass!! Oh and ( hehe ) that drummer was like a madman possessed. :D
Damn the audience knows the lyrics. That's how you get a fanbase.
Such a fantastic song...always better live, than on the albums I believe...
