I loved this one. I wish I had a real Dad like the Characters Ben Cartwright and Sheriff Andy Taylor from the Andy Griffith Show. I grew up with these shows. Those words of wisdom from this episode "The Trouble With Jamie" made me cry and understand certain things in my life today. Thank you all for uploading everything from the glory days of Bonanza.
@Justtess you know I grew up in an abusive family but even I know but sometimes a kid needs a spanking. Don't do it in anger and you explain to them why they're getting a spanking. If there's a certain age limit that comes with that but my point is there's nothing wrong with physically disciplining your kid if everything else doesn't work
My Mum made a gown like this for our classteacher, plus something you only see in fairytails, it was his birthday and he even got a nightpot that we found on the fleamarket 😂
I really enjoy this episode. In most, there are only small pieces dedicated to Ben's parenting skills. This one is a serious study in raising sons who respect, not only you, but themselves. I could have used a Dad like Ben... and brothers like Adam, Hoss and Little Joe! Love it!! Thank you!

In the defense of Jamie, I thought the marriage of his dad and his "ward" was a bit creepy also. She seemed a lot closer to Jamie's age than to the father. I thought that Jamie had a crush on her at the start. Ben "tanned" a few hides in this show.

This was normal in that era. Older man, young wife. His reaction is normal to finding out things are changing forever and he didn't have any input in the decision. He's also resentful he doesn't have a mother. He laughs she died giving him birth. He's bitter and angry.

This story was about a young boy named Jamie. He came to Mr. Cartwright's family with his father and Elizabeth but his father left him and went to San Francisco for some days.He learnt good manners and became humble and obedient. His father thanks Ben Cartwright for this and they all went to home.Storyline is superb. Amazing show.Bonanza is my favourite program.
I don't think Jamie was 'college educated', he was at "boarding school", probably a prep school. He was only supposed to be about fifteen or sixteen at the most. Learning the workings of a ranch at that period of history was most likely the most useful education he received up till that time, not to mention other lessons he received on the Poderossa.
Back then, college was not the same. College could be a university or a prep school. You often went to college if you tested high enough to go, or were rich enough, and that was typically done after the age of 15 or so. 8th grade was the highest most got before moving on to "college". Most kids didn't attend school past that age, if at all, however as they went to work instead on ranches and things. Many children only attended school periodically and if their parents thought it was worth it for them to learn reading, writing and arithmetic, as many homestead jobs and others didn't find it necessary, or trained on the job. It was mainly those aspiring to be architects, doctors, lawyers etc. that often went to university/prep or boarding schools after or instead of basic schooling.
The breakfast scene @ 10:45 is also great-that glower Hoss gives Jamie for putting honey in his bed; as the old saying goes, “If looks could murder, Jamie would be dead,” that’s for sure. And then just a second later as Jamie excuses himself to ride the horses, it’s obvious just what Hoss (and Joe)must be thinking: “ANYTHING to get away from us, the little creep!”

I asked this because nowadays a lot of kids are extremely stubborn I mean really stubborn and I honestly think it's because they haven't been taught humility or empathy or Mercy for that matter You're very fortunate to have grown up and to become the person that you are and the way I grew up yeah I wouldn't recommend kidding or beating I can't tell you this a spanking does work if it's done right for kids that are particularly stubborn For example my little sister I never had to spank once she was 13 years younger than me a chair in the corner when she was four of her holding the cat's till seem to work just fine I didn't shout at her I just explained her why she shouldn't do that and I gave her a chance and she did it again and she knew that she had to sit in the corner in her chair for pulling the Kitty's tail But my point is some kids aren't like that it's not easy for them to realize that what they did is really wrong and they need to be taught Banking's only work if a kid isn't angry about something. @yourmom_ what I mean is you should look into other cultures about how Christianity has done The reason I asked my question is because my Japanese friend is married to a Taiwanese man but I'm an American living in Taiwan He grew up in a Christian family but her husband unfortunately grew up in a very very dysfunctional family and she's pretty much a single mom You have one kid who works with her and one kid who's just really stubborn. She's the oldest and she's a girl I actually thought it would be easier for her because she had a girl and she's the oldest typically curls tend to be more helpful Actually it's the other way around. Husband is too extreme with his discipline and my friend she really has tried to do a good job and training and bringing up her kids you know from what she remembers from her parents who are Christian But I don't know if it's she goes to school and she behaves well and then just takes her frustration out on her mom because she's angry I'm trying to find an answer to help my friend who's been struggling for 10 years as I live in Taiwan I serve here in Taiwan is a self-supported missionary. I guess I just worry about her a little bit
Granted the kid was a spoiled brat and I think Ben's approach was the right one. But the person who deserved to have to sit on a cushion is the kid's father. Imagine growing up in household unloved, unwanted farmed out first to servants and then boarding schools. Naturally he is upset with his father's marriage [i.e., read siring a replacement son] and feels betrayed by both. I don't agree with Ben's pushing the kid to be a grownup about his father's impending marriage to his only friend. Instead, his father should have been admonished about repairing his relationship with his son before siring another. His remarriage must seem to the kid as another example of shutting him out of his father's life.

Jamie's Dad has a lot of fathering to do to make things right with his son before he sets off in another direction. He should take time, at least 9 months to a year to spend time with his son to repair the lifelong rift and show his son how much he cares. Then and only then, head off into a marriage. This episode was written by a woman... Not sure how this played into the plot.
I don't even blame Hoss and Joe for wanting to murder that brat ... thanks to Ben , he gave that kid the spanking of his life . Two scenes with the sheriff , a day or more in jail would've been a good start for Jamie .
poor example of parenting, Jamie's father accepts irrespect, insolence and bad behaviour. Ben did a good job, teaching both father and son how to change. Good one, Ben Cartwright.
Some parents don't have enough good sense to stop bad behaviour and then they loose controle on the kids. It's terrible. Sometimes people do accept some advices, and when they do, it's better.

Adam, who was 'college educated', had disagreements with his father but had he been insolent to his father would have gotten back handed real quick. Little Joe, with his quick temper was told by Ben, 'not to raise his voice' to him and I am sure that his brothers, would have taken him in hand, and did, in several episodes.
Ah, Ben! Why couldn't all fathers bee like him. And I APPROVE of corporal punishment in cases like this, and modern psychology be damned. Young Michael Burns, here at 16, always turns out a great performance during his active acting years. He went on to distinguish himself in the world of higher academics.
The show features the (very well portrayed) arc of the eponymous wayward character. What I found interesting was how the father's absence (literally and figuratively) really formed the backbone of the story. It's unusual for a show made at that time to portray a parent as less than ideal.

Ben gave Jamie an ultimatum; Behave yourself or else. Jamie didn't listen and wound up on the receiving end of a very brutal sounding spanking. Jamie did have it coming.
That spanking was BS. I've taken much worse in my time. Try going out, picking your own triple stranded switch and whooped with it till it broke. Even the Boondocks was on the light side of what I've gotten on the regular.

In 90% percent of this episode, Ben was wise and understanding. But at the end, he says that Jamie's father had tried to meet him half-way. I don't see that. Matthew just springs the news and expects Jamie to accept it. Plus, I thought it weird that this young woman is his "ward" for many years and now he's going to marry her. She had been like a sister to Jamie and now she's going to be his stepmother.

I enjoyed the movie. It seems that learning family relationship was something left to media/ Hollywood. It seems things haven't change much. I remember receiving my tannins; had nothing to do with tv.

LOL, downstairs as Little Joe happens to overhear this-his (second) cousin’s fruitlessly begging his Uncle Ben to stop, as Hoss happens to come home just then and LJ is like,”Come over here; you GOTTA hear this!” “Nothing but PURE MUSIC to our ears!” the two brothers are like as they hear their cousin getting what’s been coming to him over the past few days. Yes, since Ben and Jamie’s dad Matt are (first) cousins, that would make Jamie Hoss and Little Joe’s second cousin, and Ben more or less Jamie’s uncle.
Ben can understand how Jamie feels about his father remarrying because he went through that with Adam and Hoss when he remarried after losing their mothers.

Yeah, Jamie did hurt the calf and when he roped the calf, he somehow made the calf broke his leg. That's the reason why Joe said he had to put a splint on the calf leg.
Parenting has always been a tough job. Interesting family dynamics in this episode. The relationships should have been clearer in the beginning, but I guess they were clarified at the end. It was still a good episode, as usual.
My god, what a disturbing episode. A boy is emotionally neglected and resented by his own father for something he had no control over and was not his fault. His hurt is never addressed his whole life--instead, his father abandons him over and over out of cowardice--and Jamie becomes resentful and angry. His father continues to abandon him, dumping him at the Cartwright's for his father's own convenience. Rather than talk to him, the Cartwright's beat him, bully him, starve him, and essentially tell him he's not allowed to be angry about any abuse he's received before or since. Ben shames him into believing that, once again, Jamie needs to put aside his own emotional needs in favor of his father's and all the other adults around him, something he's been doing his whole life, anyway. Even his only friend is usurped by his father when the man turns her into his wife, which upsets the power balance between Jamie and her and puts him in a one down position. In the tradition of Hollywood, Jamie suddenly turns on a dime, all his emotional trauma evaporates magically, and he acquiesces to everyone's needs around him so the show can be wrapped up neatly. But not once does his father meet him halfway, not once does the man extended understanding or sympathy, not once does he tell him he's proud of him. All the giving and changing and compromising is done by Jamie and the only reward he gets for it is being called a "man." Sick, sick, sick.
I'd agree, only IF he hadn't hurt the calf. I had a horrific childhood in a hellhole neighborhood, way worse than Jamie's being neglected by his cowardly father; but I never took out my rage on a smaller child or an animal. Being neglected or abused, doesn't give anyone the right to abuse another child or an animal who's completely innocent.
I agree - up to a point. I'm not against corporal punishment at all, but in this case I think it was overused. He was a nasty brat, rude and insufferable. But for a man to blame his own son for his mother's death? To be brought up by strangers, dragged from pillar to post, never to be shown an ounce of love? And even at the Cartwrights' Jamie was shown no love. He was overworked, not allowed to eat. The spanking wasn't wrong, but that was. Adam, Hoss and Joe were different. They had had discipline, but they had also had love. You can't have one without the other. Jamie was given neither and then suddenly was given discipline. But still no love.
If only kids were raised like this today. You know there's a guy called cowboy can't he's the real deal and I saw this kid out on a run with actual cows just amazing my point is is that kids nowadays are raised to be spoiled and selfish Even as a teacher in Taiwan I can't get kids to listen just to basic simple things

Back then, college was not the same. College could be a university or a prep school. You often went to college if you tested high enough to go, or were rich enough, and that was typically done after the age of 15 or so. 8th grade was the highest most got before moving on to "college". Most kids didn't attend school past that age, if at all, however as they went to work instead on ranches and things. Many children only attended school periodically and if their parents thought it was worth it for them to learn reading, writing and arithmetic, as many homestead jobs and others didn't find it necessary, or trained on the job. It was mainly those aspiring to be architects, doctors, lawyers etc. that often went to university/prep or boarding schools after or instead of basic schooling.

The breakfast scene @ 10:45 is also great-that glower Hoss gives Jamie for putting honey in his bed; as the old saying goes, “If looks could murder, Jamie would be dead,” that’s for sure. And then just a second later as Jamie excuses himself to ride the horses, it’s obvious just what Hoss (and Joe)must be thinking: “ANYTHING to get away from us, the little creep!”

I asked this because nowadays a lot of kids are extremely stubborn I mean really stubborn and I honestly think it's because they haven't been taught humility or empathy or Mercy for that matter
You're very fortunate to have grown up and to become the person that you are and the way I grew up yeah I wouldn't recommend kidding or beating
I can't tell you this a spanking does work if it's done right for kids that are particularly stubborn
For example my little sister I never had to spank once she was 13 years younger than me a chair in the corner when she was four of her holding the cat's till seem to work just fine
I didn't shout at her I just explained her why she shouldn't do that and I gave her a chance and she did it again and she knew that she had to sit in the corner in her chair for pulling the Kitty's tail
But my point is some kids aren't like that it's not easy for them to realize that what they did is really wrong and they need to be taught
Banking's only work if a kid isn't angry about something. And again they shouldn't be giving out very often this is only done for very serious things

I get what you're saying and is an abusive I ever yet I totally understand that but at the same time I've been a teacher for almost 20 years and I got to say living in Taiwan some kids could really use a spanking

The reason I asked my question is because my Japanese friend is married to a Taiwanese man but I'm an American living in Taiwan

But I don't know if it's she goes to school and she behaves well and then just takes her frustration out on her mom because she's angry

Granted the kid was a spoiled brat and I think Ben's approach was the right one. But the person who deserved to have to sit on a cushion is the kid's father. Imagine growing up in household unloved, unwanted farmed out first to servants and then boarding schools. Naturally he is upset with his father's marriage [i.e., read siring a replacement son] and feels betrayed by both. I don't agree with Ben's pushing the kid to be a grownup about his father's impending marriage to his only friend. Instead, his father should have been admonished about repairing his relationship with his son before siring another. His remarriage must seem to the kid as another example of shutting him out of his father's life.

Jamie's Dad has a lot of fathering to do to make things right with his son before he sets off in another direction. He should take time, at least 9 months to a year to spend time with his son to repair the lifelong rift and show his son how much he cares. Then and only then, head off into a marriage. This episode was written by a woman... Not sure how this played into the plot.
I don't even blame Hoss and Joe for wanting to murder that brat ... thanks to Ben , he gave that kid the spanking of his life . Two scenes with the sheriff , a day or more in jail would've been a good start for Jamie .

Adam, who was 'college educated', had disagreements with his father but had he been insolent to his father would have gotten back handed real quick. Little Joe, with his quick temper was told by Ben, 'not to raise his voice' to him and I am sure that his brothers, would have taken him in hand, and did, in several episodes.

The show features the (very well portrayed) arc of the eponymous wayward character. What I found interesting was how the father's absence (literally and figuratively) really formed the backbone of the story. It's unusual for a show made at that time to portray a parent as less than ideal.

In 90% percent of this episode, Ben was wise and understanding. But at the end, he says that Jamie's father had tried to meet him half-way. I don't see that. Matthew just springs the news and expects Jamie to accept it. Plus, I thought it weird that this young woman is his "ward" for many years and now he's going to marry her. She had been like a sister to Jamie and now she's going to be his stepmother.

Yeah, Jamie did hurt the calf and when he roped the calf, he somehow made the calf broke his leg. That's the reason why Joe said he had to put a splint on the calf leg.

Parenting has always been a tough job. Interesting family dynamics in this episode. The relationships should have been clearer in the beginning, but I guess they were clarified at the end. It was still a good episode, as usual.

My god, what a disturbing episode. A boy is emotionally neglected and resented by his own father for something he had no control over and was not his fault. His hurt is never addressed his whole life--instead, his father abandons him over and over out of cowardice--and Jamie becomes resentful and angry. His father continues to abandon him, dumping him at the Cartwright's for his father's own convenience. Rather than talk to him, the Cartwright's beat him, bully him, starve him, and essentially tell him he's not allowed to be angry about any abuse he's received before or since. Ben shames him into believing that, once again, Jamie needs to put aside his own emotional needs in favor of his father's and all the other adults around him, something he's been doing his whole life, anyway. Even his only friend is usurped by his father when the man turns her into his wife, which upsets the power balance between Jamie and her and puts him in a one down position. In the tradition of Hollywood, Jamie suddenly turns on a dime, all his emotional trauma evaporates magically, and he acquiesces to everyone's needs around him so the show can be wrapped up neatly. But not once does his father meet him halfway, not once does the man extended understanding or sympathy, not once does he tell him he's proud of him. All the giving and changing and compromising is done by Jamie and the only reward he gets for it is being called a "man." Sick, sick, sick.
I'd agree, only IF he hadn't hurt the calf. I had a horrific childhood in a hellhole neighborhood, way worse than Jamie's being neglected by his cowardly father; but I never took out my rage on a smaller child or an animal. Being neglected or abused, doesn't give anyone the right to abuse another child or an animal who's completely innocent.
I agree - up to a point. I'm not against corporal punishment at all, but in this case I think it was overused. He was a nasty brat, rude and insufferable. But for a man to blame his own son for his mother's death? To be brought up by strangers, dragged from pillar to post, never to be shown an ounce of love? And even at the Cartwrights' Jamie was shown no love. He was overworked, not allowed to eat. The spanking wasn't wrong, but that was. Adam, Hoss and Joe were different. They had had discipline, but they had also had love. You can't have one without the other. Jamie was given neither and then suddenly was given discipline. But still no love.
