    Hey everybody, thanks for watching! Zoe did such a great job, and it will be cool to track her career in magic in the years to come! 🎩✨ BTW they didn't show a full magic act on AGT yesterday which is why I skipped making a reaction for it. They only had some abbreviated version showing how bored the judges were, so it was not interesting.

      The only way I can explain it is if, after Teller put some cards above and some below, at 4:37, Zoe continued and said something like "I will do some more cuts so that your card is more lost..." but that part was edited out (indeed, the camera cuts at this point to show the audience). In this case, a crimp at the bottom card would be useful.

    There was a lovely moment at 4:03, when Penn looked across to Teller with a lovely smile, indicating there and then that they knew the routine. But, and it's a big "but", that young lady has a great future. The fact that she didn't fool them may just be a great incentive to keep working on her craft. Good luck, young lady.

    I believe the way she did it involved marked cards in a stacked, un-shuffled deck, and a crimp. Penn had a free choice of which card he picked. She never knew what card it was until the reveal at the end (unless the markings on the backs of the cards told her, but they were likely only a sequence and not the actual card values). While he's holding that, she had Teller pick a bunch of cards from the middle and count them. When she turns around, she is able to see at a glance from the secret markings on the backs of the cards that there is now a gap of 10 missing cards in her stacked deck. Using marked cards in a stacked deck is the non-magic gambling bit that Penn talked about at the end.
    She now invites Penn to insert his card at any time and starts putting down bunches of them, and at the point he puts his card back in, she is secretly crimping the bottom card in her left hand by bending its corner slightly with her pinkie, while his focus is on putting his card back. Then, knowing Teller pulled 10 cards, she puts down 9 in (I think) 2 bunches, so like 5 and then 4, then her next bunch she pulls some number off the top, plus her bottom crimped card, and tosses that down as if she pulled them all from the top.
    Now she has the crimp, then 9 cards, then Penn's card. She then cuts the cards several times, being careful to not disturb these 11 cards which begin at the crimp (crimp, plus 9, plus Penn's).
    Then she invites Teller to put his cards back, some on top, some on bottom. At this point, either to help preserve the mystery for our young magician, or just to help the show, I believe the producers do a jump cut skipping some of her card handling, hidden by a cutaway. They cut away to a random lady in the audience smiling, and when we're back on Zoe, I believe she's done a cut down to her crimped card and squared the deck.
    She then asks Teller his number, counts down the 9 cards she inserted after Penn put his card back in (the crimped card is now on the bottom of the deck after the edited-out bit where she gives the deck a final cut), and the 10th card down is Penn's.
    And props to her for being so good as to do these magician techniques so well, not the least including the patter, with such wonderful presence of mind, projecting charisma, and navigating everything so brilliantly!

      My guess is that because she told teller to pull from the middle of the deck, that's where the marked cards were at. So that with a little math an a few outs let's her always be able to get it. (And not necessary on the 10th card)

    The cards taken by teller, from the middle, are marked in a way different from the peripheral ones.
    She put Penn’s card after a known number of cards that were on the periphery.
    On counting the 10 cards, she counted the central cards one by one, then calculated (10-the number of central cards) .. and did double or triple lifts to adjust for the 10 cards, with the flexibility to have it at 10 or 11 (just after 10)
    A lot of practice for a child

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen 3 роки тому +4

    The best known explanation for this trick is that the show editors removed one deck cut after Teller had added the cards back. If that's true, the trick is pretty simple. If the show actually displayed the actual trick, I still have no idea how she did it (the card counting part).

  • @TNESatiron
    @TNESatiron 5 років тому +26

    After watching this video multible times i am pretty sure that it was luck for her:
    1. Penn had a free choice on the Card Pick, same goes for Teller.
    2. While dealing the Cards down waiting for Penn to stop her, she counted the Cards so she was able to know how many Cards Teller took.
    3. After Penn stopped her i guess she made a little bend in the Card she placed on top of his selection (key card). So she was able to keep track of it.
    4. This is where the "gambling" starts. After she knew how many Cards Peller took, she placed the card in the middle Position of the number he was thinking of.
    Lets say Teller had 10 Cards, so she placed the selection on the 5th Position. Then she told Teller to place some Cards on Top and some on the bottom. Most People would split the Cards more or less evenly, so lets say 5 - 5 or 4 - 6 and thats what she was hoping for.
    Lets say Teller would have gone 6 Top and 4 Bottom, then she had to count 10 Cards down and reaveled the 11th Card as his selection. If he would go 4 Top and 6 Bottom i am pretty sure that the Trick would go on, saying something like "wouldnt it be impressive if you card was among this 10 Cards" or something like that.
    This would work with every number:
    lets say he picks 7 cards, then she had to place the selection on the 4th position from the Top. If he puts 3 or 4 Cards on Top she needs only to reveal it as the 7th Card or counting seven Cards down and reveal the 8th Card as his selection. Else the Trick would go on.
    I am pretty sure thats why they talk about gambling, the outcome she had was just perfect for her with some luck involved.
    There is a Trick from David Blaine where the Spectator choses a Suit and he Vanishes all other Suits from the Deck: ua-cam.com/video/5UQSM5jo72k/v-deo.html its more or less the same Principle. If the Spectator says Hearths, the Trick is done. Else it goes on (Magician`s choice)
    But thats just my Opinion, maybe i am completely wrong ^^
    Still amazing handling from her with that age, she would have deserved that Trophy :)

    • @JasonParkerMagic
      @JasonParkerMagic  5 років тому +4

      TNESatiron yeah I definitely think something was removed from the video, because even with the concept of multiple outs.... she didn’t see it know how teller split the cards on top and bottom.. she was looking away. And even if she was looking shouldn’t wouldn’t be able to know for sure.

    • @Devedander

      It did seem a bit odd to take the tenth card rather than count ten cards and then his would have been the next card.
      So I could see how the is a bit of built in wiggle room.
      But had teller pulled a bigger clump like 20 cards you have a lot more chance of it being not anywhere near the clump total from the top and I feel like funny business making up ways to count more would be difficult to do smoothly.
      I do agree she counter cards because she dealt down in clumps in guessing of 3

    • @Ken.-
      @Ken.- 5 років тому +3

      "had teller pulled a bigger clump like 20 cards"
      20 cards is almost 40% of the deck! She tells him to specifically take a "small clump of cards from the middle of the deck."

      @Daniel Brandstetter She had him take cards from the middle of the deck and she brought each one up to see it better as she counted. I'd say that it's a clear sign that the cards were marked in some way and she was looking at that.

You see Penn then gently put his card in the deck and look at Teller @4:03 smiling once they both know exactly what she is doing to the cards. She even bends the remaining cards in her hand and even pauses to bend them after Penn puts his card in the deck. She marked the cards. the "code" or "pattern" part is where she's dealing cards onto the table before Penn put his hard into the deck, you can see towards the bottom of her stack of cards she fumbled for a second in counting how many she had which you can see Penn clearly picked up on as he smiled. notice her dealing those cards wasn't random but in groups of like 3-4 cards at a time, since the deck wasn't shuffled at the start they could have been arranged in an order that was out of order until she started laying them down in groups of 3-4 at a time essentially putting them into order. she also knew that Teller had cards that were going to be placed back into the deck afterwards, small hands are better with feeling minute details so if she's counting how many cards are in the deck she knows how many Teller has. there was also her "couple of cuts" before Teller placed his cards back in the deck, she knew where Penn put his card since she counted the "groups" off when having him put the card back and simply moved the card to a spot near the top leaving room for Teller's cards to fill in the gap. i wouldn't say this is perfect as i don't know all the terms and what not but this is definitely along the lines if you go back and watch the way she handles the cards!

    I'm not a magician (not even a part-time one) but I've seen tons of these videos and have started seeing some things here and there. I can tell you for a FACT that I have no freaking clue how she could have done this with what we saw. Unless they cut out part of the trick with the editing, there's NO possibility she could have waited until after the cards were shuffled AND Teller putting an undetermined number on top and bottom to ask Teller for the number of cards to count in order to find the 5 of hearts. If she shuffled them, then yes (or if she had a way to palm the card). But she literally counted the cards 1 at a time without any opportunity to skip or move the placement. What if he had be 5 cards on top and then given her the number 5? She would have had to make at least 5 more cards disappear to be able to reach it.
    I have no idea....good trick, especially for a 12 year-old.

      Vanyke - She threw me off because she didn't specifically ask Teller how many cards he took. She had told him to count his cards and remember that number, but then at the end she directed, "So, Teller, can you show me, what is the number you're thinking of?" Obviously I got distracted briefly by a meaningless irrelevancy.
      I'm not a magician I just enjoy watching the videos and Jason's are so cool. I think if she crimped the card, it should be easy for a skilled artist to control it to the top, or wherever. Notice how, once Penn "loses" his card in the deck, she immediately cuts the deck, about where the card would be based on the number she laid down before Penn calls stop? Once she's controlled it, I'm not certain how she counted down to it. What a fun act.

    When she was counting to ten I was looking to see if she was pulling off more than one card to reach a specific location in the deck but it looks like a single card every time.
    It's interesting the 5 of hearts appeared to be in the exact middle of the deck when she laid them out to the camera, but it appears Penn chose a card from the end so how did he end up with that card? 🤔
    Notice Penn and Teller gave a wry smile to one another 4:02 when she was creating a 'random' place to put the card back, seems to me they were evenly divided increments. At 3:59 you can clearly see her counting the cards. She was in control of card placement the entire time.

She wasn't watching and she said put then on the top or on the bottom, however he wanted. They definately edited some stuff out, but I think she palmed a deck that had cards that were the same card teller picked, and then used that deck for teller to put his cards into. So when he puts his 10 cards back on top or bottom she knows that going 10 cards in will get her back to cards from the deck that were all the same card that teller picked. Notice she didn't have teller sign the card so we would know that was the same exact card.

I believe she is pulling the card out though at some point after but before Teller puts his cards on top and bottom. She shiftes her hand hold on the final card before she presents and this is when it comes together with a random card so when she flips it over its the card she had pulled showing. She counts out a few cards and strips the bottom card as a crimp to put the selection around 4th in the deck, she also could keep track of how many cards were removed, when she turned around she paused and used the classic crutch of "now .." to potentially read markings. I can do the trick as a half wit and dont know why, but I have never curled a card.. I stay away from any card manipulations ans marking a place as that has all been done.. this trick I will do as my only card trick because if I dont know why it always works, noby I show it to will know it... I fount the math on this trick by looking for a mathematics equation for roulette similiar to card counting black jack.. I did find a math solution but you have to be so quick to place your bet after the ball is released that its too much math in my head to do so quickly. It also has to have a different calculation based on a steel vs tephylon ball and no bating to you witness and calculate 11 strait spins and noting that humans each will repeat themselves it they keep doing it. Rule: 11 pre-spins for the dealer..dont keep betting if ne dealer comes, dont every bet more than 20% of bankroll of$1200 or more and never play for more than 30 spins... I can do it on my home wheel but I cant go that fast at a sppedy table ..ohh well

    I couldn't read the cards well from here, but presuming that Penn can recognize a Stebbins order, it is always possible that she was using an alternate order that would not be readily identified .. add in a crimp on the selected card, and noting the number of cards that are in proper order when they are added back to the deck could give her the point to control her selected card to - from there, skilled hands can accomplish the rest, I believe.

If you look there she could have just place her cards on top of the other cards.... but she didn't, she carefully placed the rest of the cards on top in 3-4 little packs. The only thing I can think of is she picked the deck up after Teller put his cards there and then cut the pack a couple times. No real reason to that so that is where the trick happened. Very skillful young lady/

    I really do think that something must have been cut out of this trick. She asks Teller to show what number he was thinking of - not how many cards he had taken. I just don't see how she could have done this given the seemingly random number of cards Teller placed on top of the deck. At 4:15 she has made herself aware of the top and the bottom card. The top card is the chosen card (5H) and the bottom card is some picture card but she knows what it is because she peeked while she was cutting. So now she will be able to tell how many cards teller has placed on the bottom after she does something to look at them but that's what we don't see because of the trick being edited I think.

      Mark Lucas yeah unfortunately I have to agree... it’s my best guess so far too. Maybe there was a part where she was able to determine how many cards teller had and told him when she asks him later that he should put half on top and half on bottom? Or...? Hunh. Yeah I’m just not sure. Would be nice to know if some part was removed or not.....

      @@JasonParkerMagic I compared 4:36 to 4:50 like 20x. Based on the stationary objects behind Teller, it appears the camera angle has not changed. However, the position of the cards definitely changed. So my only conclusion is when they inserted that inexplicable 4:38 audience shot--the only audience shot through the entire performance once her routine started--she probably was making a cut that they conveniently edited out. Because clearly the card has been moved and repositioned again between 4:36 and 4:50.

    People are commenting on key cards, crimps & controls. Even if she can control the selection to where she wants, there is no way to know where to control to unless she knows how many cards Teller is going to put on top. The bottom line is this - the only way to get the selection tenth from the top is to get the it in this position from the top: 10 minus the number of cards Teller puts on top. There's no way around it. As presented in the video, there is no way for her to know how many cards Teller puts on top. To me, it looked like she legitimately dealt to the tenth card. I truly believe there is something going on behind the scenes or something is edited out of the performance.

    Problem with such fairness is that number of ways to do it is very small if not one. I not going to claim that I know how she did it, only thing that is fishy is that putting into the deck and then cutting which by that gambling reference probably ment she controled it somehow, maybe she got extremely good at picking multiple cards without revealing it so she could get to the card no metter the number idk honestly.

    hmm how about this. one cards is taken by penn, and some cards at top and bottom were taken by teller. So when they take the card, she marked remaining card. So, all she do is find unmarked card that sleeps between those sandwiches card. And by counting to ten, she pick some of those card until the last card. That is count as trimmed by penn and teller

    Loved the trick but honestly I really didn't like the part of her presentation where she was revealing some sleights as part of teaching such as holding a break and forcing a card bcoz in my opinion those are some of the ultimate secrets of card magic in general , but over all completely fooled and entertained and congratulations to her she could keep her nerves in that big stage in front of the masters
