I'm so glad there's only audio of this. Having no video stimulates more the imagination I think, in the sense that it feels like I'm there with them. Like that magic from the radio days.
Eddie Van Halen is coming to your house in 10 minutes...the craziest thing of all time, but not so crazy when your dad is Frank Zappa.
Dweezil: Can you hand me a guitar?
Vai: Yah, here's a 7-string acoustic.
I want to live in that world.
Perfectly normal.
fun listening to two of the best guitarists ever talking about yet another guitar guru. Frank would be proud of what a stellar band Dweezil has put together to keep his music alive.
Caught the show last year, Zappa Does Zappa and was just blown away. Straight up kick ass show.
Nothing beat childhood memories. They'll stay with you your entire life. Great story.
Rest in power Eddie
Nice!
It was always my dream to meet EVH, but sadly I didn’t ever get the chance. 😔
I'm someone who looks back 30 years and really thinks Eddie Van Halen saved my life. I was 13 years old with not much to live for......other than to play guitar like him. I'll spare the long and boring details. I'd just like to say: take care of your selves. Vai is 5 years younger than EVH and doesn't look a day over 45. EVH didn't start taking his health seriously until it was too late - and little doubt it had much to do with his second wife who must be an absolute saint of a person.
Dweezil Zappa: an Italian virtuoso in his own right!
Outstanding to hear you both and thank you for sharing this super cool story,. RIP EVH.
Eddie is King.
RIP EVH
Pre-MTV, the only thing we had was Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert and Midnight Special.
AWE! Big hugh from a HUGE Brazilian EVH fan!
I remember going up to Dweezils house (formally Franks) in 1999. Such a cool guy. Walking toward the studio, rows of Frank 24 track tapes on the shelves. He had isn't little editing room to the right when you walk in. Just started showing me all the stuff he was working on. Of course, the main control room was up above, but he was doing everything in there was a Panasonic DA7 I think.
I was so shy. Of course this came about 3 weeks after I was up at 5150 with Ed and Alex and was still in shock and was a big Dweezil fan though as well when I was a kid. He had that video with Moon singing, and that green guitar.
Had only been in LA for 2 months and just couldn't even speak.
Actually I did ask Dweezil if he could help me get a caster for a 5150 cabinet that the internal nut got loose and shredded the whole internal wood as it wobbled around. Never heard back, shocker.
Eventually installed Ernie Ball casters with the removable wheels.
Didn't know what Eddie sounded like when speaking is funny. Gotta remember this was when nobody knew what the guys from Kiss looked like!
I love this story!! Thanks for sharing!!
Ed's on the biggest stage now, playing the universe !!! Oh yeah !
Actually he died in 2020
I am seriously contemplating finding room in my budget for this series of podcasts...unbelievably cool and wonderful timing
I got the 5150 package. Soooo worth it. In this package, once all released will be 30 episodes. Each episode over an hour long. We'll worth it!!!
@@dankaste9517 thanks for the comment...fer real
EVH is a way of life! King Edward RIP
I love this!!!!
Great story!🤘🤘🤘
Love that acapella intro
How cool is Dweezil?
Sub-zero. EVH produced his first single when he was 12. Coolest kid in school.
Van Halen was really Rock Royalty 🙂
Only Steve Vai calls him Edward!! LMAO. I wish Steve would play more songs. He's amazing and can do it all but aside from the Star Wars sounds and all the wild sounds he can get I would like to hear him just thrash on some tunes!!!!
Staying Frosty . . . Steve Vai .
Wow Dweezil sounds young!
You go OMG... it's Eddie Van Halen...Eddie goes...OMG... it's Frank Zappa
@@centaurus5676 Do tell, I can't wait to hear this one.
@@centaurus5676 How Frank was miles ahead of EVH as a musician. I'll wait, take your time.
@@centaurus5676 I'm still waiting.
IMHO, Zappa had nothing on EVH.
@@atticussampson776I see it's been 2 years and he never answered you because he can't😂😂
I remember the year Van Halen (the album) came out and everyone, especially all the guitar players, were listening to Eruption. I went to Myrtle Beach and there was this guy walking around with a cassette tape trying to impress the girls, pretending like it was himself on the tape. When I said that's Van Halen, he tried to say that he had taken the bass, drum and vocal tracks from the album, but that he had overdubbed the guitar tracks and it was himself playing. What a dork!
So was there some sort of music playing in the background when Eddie arrived? Like in the movies?
First five times I saw Eddie speak (TV, UA-cam, etc), I was like...he sounds like that?
If he called you it wasn't random.
😂😂😂... Awesome!! 🙌💕💞💕
2 Paesano's.... LUV IT !!
fuckin awesome
I've been watching this video for 5 minutes, and only now realize that Dweezil is the interviewer.
(This is meant to be light-hearted.) So...lemme get this all sorted out; you're 97% through watching this video, which is really a podcast with a static image that has the name "Dweezil" up for easy viewing the whole time. The description (which apparently few people ever read) has the names Dweezil and Steve Vai in it. Lastly, the audio features only two voices to listen to. All I can say is, I hope you A: don't drive, and B: don't operate heavy machinery.
I was wondering how his dad could know it was actually Van Halen when I realized, Dweezil Zappa.. So of course his dad is Frank Zappa, he probably would know how how to confirm its actually him.
@@TavisAllen Ha! Well I can say that when I watched the video, I was I no condition to do either.
@@smcgloth Right on, right on!
@@TavisAllen In defense of sleepless Steve, he apparently doesn't sleep.
Great interview. Why do Americans say they are Italian? I'm American. Why is it everyone who has Italian heritage has to tell you they are Italian. Because of the god father? My grandma was from Austria. My dad was in WW2. I don't get that.
Probably because they are ashamed of being American!
"American" doesnt mean anything. It's gibberish. Someone says they're Italian and you have a specific idea about them
@@npc2071 Nah, gibberish would be your reply.
@@atticussampson776 America is a giant gangbang between europeans settlers that eradicated natives. There's little to be proud of.
It's all Gibberish here...
@y tho : Not sure I like the answer... Should we check the stereotype dictionary? Ideas, like witches or Italians, come in good and bad. DaVinci and Mussolini?...
@Bruce: Why would this bother you? Something against Italians? (You did not ask "Why do people state their heritage?")
I'm an American, too - who is proud of my German heritage. And also the Dutch and French and all the rest of the parts that make me what I am. And I'm proud to say it - in the right company. My German background might come up in a convo... voici... if heritage related to the topic. Or when I'm with family. Or when relating to another fine German, Ladies and Gentlemen. (Ritz? Dimeola?) It's something shared, related to, with the intent of bringing two or more subjects closer. (Perhaps something between two subjects, recorded during an intimate moment of social intercourse, who are maybe of the same heritage, and who happened to allow an audience to listen?) You have to keep it all in context.
There are also other names, other groupings, for commonalities (or things not so common) that people share and relate to others: The overall human factors; German (or Italian, or American) factors; Family Factors; Friend factors; Band-mate factors, etc. In my immediate family, there is what we call the "R" factor (which includes man-xplaining on steroids - which apparently I'm doing now...), and 'running on "R" time'... yeah, we could just say "Late", but it gives it that special, relatable, consistent identity or flavor to that lateness that only a brother could impart.
You yourself could have been just a random unbranded earth human, a mutt... but you chose to take ownership of your American-ity. Should ~I~ ask why ~you~ mention it? Maybe the fact that you ~are~ a member of the wretched refuse gives you pride? (Except for the natives, we Americans are ~all~ members. And there's something definitely seriously wrong with us.) (Bill Murray says so.) (Bleh, bleh? Feel good!)
That's just my take...
Didn't Frank and Ed have the same theory teacher?
Truman Fisher at Pasadena City College.
Anyone that dislikes this video ought to be put down.
I believe the EVH brand is in good hands but it all depends on Fender's involvement. Fender continues to manufacture one after the other. EVH guitars will be the most faked guitar in history
A genuine EVH guitar has a high level of quality control its why they are expensive.
The factory makes sure everything in the guitar is perfectly intimated and leveled.
EDIT: @Michael Ralston points out the obvious :-) so I've deleted this comment!
Dweezil is telling the story, not Vai.🤔
@@mikeralston777 Whew! Thanks, that makes sense. Since Dweezil's the host (and I obviously don't know their particular voices), I assumed -- mistakenly -- that the "guest" was telling the story (as guests often do). It's interesting that neither Dweezil nor Steve ever say "Frank" instead of "my dad" taking over the phone call -- probably would have clued me in! :-)
🤘🏽
Its pathetic he's charging for these podcast get a clue. There are other ways to make money on interviews without haveing people pay.
Not as if he's short of money either! Just greed!
Lame
Can't stand Dweezil, dude bullied me in elementary school. Remeber it like it was yesterday. I dont c why he's so special, as a million guitarist can do better. Oh, I know - Dude only famous cause daddy. On the contrary, brother & sister were cool. Oakwood elementary school
Really ? I'm surprised ,i figured with the name DWEEZIL he would be the one getting bullied. PS didn't Wolfgang Van Halen go to Oakwood too.
I'm sorry to hear that, but I bet you a million that nowadays he'd apologize and say he feels terrible about what he did. I was bullied myself, so in turn I bullied other kids also. It wasn't right, but 40 years later we can get together and have a laugh, and it's super cathartic. Boys will be boys, but men must be men. Try reaching out to Dweezil and at least give him one chance to clean it up. It might be one of the best things that ever happens for you both. God bless.
Dweezil became an amazing guitar player around 2008
He was no longer that below average guitar player with the green guitar.
Spoilt bastards are usually the school bully!
Bullied by a guy named Dweezil who had a sis named Moon unit? I wouldn’t let that get out.
