Aaron, great review as usual with all your vids. I bought this one like 8 months ago after watching your review and I bought it for friends and family for Christmas. I’m not a knife snob, I want it to be made well and work. As a guy who was a kid in the early 90’s, I used to receive Schrade and old timer knives as gifts and I thought, being a child, they were the bomb. Glad to see they are putting out some really good blades recently with the delta class. I prefer this knife over others I own which cost a lot more.
In the same price range, good alternatives are Ganzo/Firebird,Sanrenmu and Eafengrow folding knives in D2 ,14C28N and 440C steel with just as good if not better finish and materials.
My nephew is 12 years old and I took him to get a knife, I was gonna buy him a benchmade bugout, but he wanted this one instead, lol I was not gonna argue he doesn't understand the finer points of why things are expensive and some are not, but he absolutely loves this knife and I agree for the price I was shocked how good it is.
Man that’s brave buying a 12 yr old a knife that expensive, I was constantly losing knives at that age. I think the kid had the right idea. Buy him 3 more so you can give him another if he loses it and it’ll still be cheaper than the bugout 😂
Totally agree with you on this knife! Ordered it on Midway for $20 to fill out an order to get free shipping and after getting it and using it, wow, great value! I did not get the Gerber Scout because for the price it should have had better steel. It's worth about $20-30 for me. Well made little knife. I wish I would have ordered a few more Divergents at that price. Make great little gifts. Not worried about losing or destroying it and resharpenes very quickly with anything! As always, great review!
Schrade imports are really stepping their game up. I picked up the divergent on a whim because I liked the look. Turned out to be a solid knife! I just ordered the Inert in aluminum and AUS-10!
Thank you, keep seeing these on Amazon and they look great for me but no reviews made me think it probably was made shitty. This is helpful, we appreciate it ☝️👍
So much for you only reviewing expensive knives and shilling for the makers. I'm not a Schrade fan, but will definitely look into purchasing a couple to use as thank you gifts for guys that go out of their way to help me out with some projects I've got going on. Thanks for the heads up.
Talked with this guy who was super knowledgeable about knives from the 40s and 50s, he said there were five and dime stores with trays by the cashier filled with schrade, imperial and Camillus little jack knives, back when they were American made mostly consistent of C75 steel, super tough and simple carbon steel, readily available and easy to machine. Everyone had a little jack in their pocker. Now all of those companies went PRC, damn shame. Rant aside I'm glad that knife there is a surprise for ya 🎉
Cool budget option. Since you have so many knives - is there a deep carry clip that would fit those standard Schrade holes (at least the 2 outside holes) without modification, like from Benchmade or CRKT?
Honestly I enjoy the Divergent more than their far more expensive domestically produced crossbar locks. The fit and finish seems far better, even if the materials aren't.
You should check out and review the tough built folding Jab saw! From 25$ at lowes building supply. Would be a great bugout or survival tool to throw in your pack. Blades are interchangeable and replaceable with standard non proprietary reciprocal blades.
The shrade tencity is a amazing edc its only 6inch total with aus-10 blade with lifetime warranty aluminum scales and looks ba only $25 bucks. Shades new stuff looks and feels awesome with great specs for the price.
Good to see Schrade still in the game. If they made this knife in an XL version - say with a 3.5 to 3.8 inch blade in 14C28N steel for 60 to 80 bucks I'd be all in.
I've owned one of these for a while. Agreed that it is a well done knife for a good price. No issues with mine at all. I wish it had a deeper pocket clip.
Almost perfect for me. Wish they could've made it aus-10 like the others they made. Maybe they could have both this one & a slightly larger one maybe around 3.5 length blade w/aus10 like the way Ontario did with the rat 1 & 2
Ok don't laugh but is it easy to open like a traditional knife.. is there enough blade to get a good grip.. is it hard to pull qithout pulling back the lock..thanks
Looks great especially for the price so yeah I’ll be getting one after watching this review. Been using my petrified fish victory for years which is a absolutely fantastic beast of a folder
As others have mentioned in the comments, Ganzo and Eafengrow knives are good on a budget. Lots of people have issues with clone knives though. My thinking is buy the clone first to see if you like how the knife feels and handles and if you do then buy the actual version with all the upgrades that you don’t get in the budget clone.
Nice knife! I have been carrying a USA made crossbar lock from Utica in 440c....G10 handle....model UTKF4.....Can find it under $50 online....Been very happy with it...edge holding well...
Ok went on a whim and bought one. Overall a nice knife. HOWEVER buyer be ware. My knife came sharpened on one side only, a lil work and yes it will hold a great edge.
My perspective, base only upon my life experience. 1. a knife is simply a tool and when you allocate your money based upon the most typical situation you will face. Otherwise, a knife warranty which requires keeping a record and sending the knife somewhere, the type of steel, the expected life of the knife, the ease of sharpening, the blade configuration are meaningless. I had this brought home to me when I was requested to supply a Marine unit in the first gulf war with a pocket knife. They wanted a new product to me, a Spyderco Endura. The knife was used to puncture 50 gallon oil drums and other tasks that were not appropriate and would be thrown away when worn down to a nub. They could get more, didn't care about the appearance of the knife. 2. I wanted a knife available to me where ever in the US I would be and if it wasn't at home, it would be with relatives who owned a car. So, a lot of the Big 5, low end, knives like Smith and Wesson border guard (a knife not made by that name and not used at the US border, but a rugged knife for an emergency) went to the relatives for their cars. 3. I wanted a good, one defensive encounter knife that could be used to slice an apple or make a sandwich. So for carry knives, I sent Kershaw speedsafe knives, some engraved. The usual would be a 3615 unit. 4. I read the articles about the best steel, the best sharpener, the best micarta handle. Ok. I have some of the world's "best" fixed blade and folders sitting next to my computer. ADVICE follows: If I were starting out in knives, instead of spending $450 or more for a "special forces" knife when you have no skills, buy 10 $10 Mora basic knives and spend the remaining $350 on lessons with knives and parts to modify and improve the carry and versatility of the basic sheath. Then you are much better prepared than the guy who bought the latest safe queen.
I think Schrade used their size to their advantage. The Aus-8 would be to expensive for most companies to sell this at $30 Schrade however has a leg up, in warehouse space and the liquid cash on hand to buy the sheets of it in bulk and save a lot of money.
Dunno, looked at Schrade website. Did not see too many folders that I loved. Like the AUS 8 and 10 steel though. Fixed blade options were a little more compelling, had good prices for AUS 10 fixed blade stuff. I especially liked the fixed Exertion and Wolverine except for the hollow grind !!! Flat or Sabre would be better overall.
Schrade has definitely fallen a few rungs (or maybe completely off the ladder in some cases) since Taylor took over the brand. The budget knife space right now is absolutely saturated with great bang for the buck blades, but not many from the household name brands. So I'm glad you took the time to break this one down...
Unless I’m mistaken, Schrade is now owned and manufactured by American Outdoor Brands(Formerly S&W). I feel like the quality has improved from the past years (nowhere near the original USA made from my childhood though)
@@Kyoko12345678 Yes, S&W bought Taylor circa 2016. I was simply referring to the 2004 shuttering of the Ellenville plant as the beginning of the decline.
July 21, 2024 -- Based on this channel's short on this knife I went to Amazon and it was $17.56 so I bought four of them for a total of $70.24. That's just amazing!
Have you heard of Ganzo? It’s got good work knives. A lot of, basically, copies of popular knives. Just saying it might be interesting to see a Ganzo vs the real model.
I'm hoping we'll see less Axis Lock copies in the future and more improvements on the style like the Spyderco Manix 2. I love my Benchmade but I can't bring myself to trust those omega springs.
Aaron, I've got another crossbar lock knife with 8Cr13MoV steel comparable to AUS8, it's the SRM 9201. $20. $10 less than the Divergent. See what you think???
Many other knives at this price Are made of the softer cheaper steels. I've bought a few knives off of eBay and a lot of them were Schrades and I bought them because they had decent steel for the price
What do you like better. 14c28n or aus8? I got a knife for 29.00 off amazon that blows away a lot knives ive spent way more for. The qaulity is phenominal. If your interested ill send it to you to do a review. Its my current favorite edc.
Schrade quality control & customer service is absolutely atrocious. My "survival knife" (AUS10) came with a large crack/fracture in the tang & massively uneven blade grinds. They said they would replace it then simply ignored all my messages when they found out I lived outside the US. No replacement blade, no refund, no nothing. Absolute JOKE of a company. Trash made in China products (for the most part) & the worst customer service / warranty in the world.
one out of every other crap knife in their lineup. Make it with D2, AUS10,. 14xxxn,. 12cxxxn and charge $15 more, then maybe. Every knife in the Gerber lineup is way over-priced. Buck may be 420HC on a lot of their folders, but that BOS heat treat is dialed in.
Aaron, great review as usual with all your vids.

I'm repeating everyone's appreciation of discovering and steering us to an actual retail value. Kudos to both you and Schrade! 👊
Totally! High value is the best if it works!
It’s nice to see an affordable knife that offers great value. Thanks for featuring a knife we can afford to own and give as a gift.

The Schrade Wolverine for a little over $10 more is a great fixed blade option too. AUS 10 steel 🤙🏻
Yes and... The I-Beam and the Exertion DP are two others from Schrade in that same class.
Sounds good..found one for 22-23 on Chicago Knife
I've owned one of these for a while. Agreed that it is a well done knife for a good price. No issues with mine at all. I wish it had a deeper pocket clip.
Glad to hear long-term user feedback is good! Sure deep ride would be nice but standoff pocket clips sometimes are refreshing too.
Ganzo Firebird FH41 is like that! Mid-$20’s and it’s good!

Ok don't laugh but is it easy to open like a traditional knife.. is there enough blade to get a good grip.. is it hard to pull qithout pulling back the lock..thanks
The reality is that there are many very high quality budget blades these days. Tons of well made D2 steel options out there

Ok went on a whim and bought one. Overall a nice knife. HOWEVER buyer be ware. My knife came sharpened on one side only, a lil work and yes it will hold a great edge.
I have a question? Would you rather his knife or a ka bar dozier or a ontario rat 2 all with the same steel aus8? Please tell me why
I don’t like the rat 2 so I would say this or the kabar. Just depends on your favorite locking mechanism.
Looks almost just like my Kershaw iridium and heist. I do like the sweep on top of blade though.
Hi Aron, I recommend you to try the Free tiger knife, model FT2103, that for a little more than 20 dollars gives you D2 steel, G10 and ball bearrings.

good to see schrade coming out with some cool designs these days
Eafengrow EF3, and the Sitivian ST110 pivot locks in D2 are nice and under $30!
It’s $26 on Amazon right now. 4/22/24
Now like 21.95

Still didnt answer my question. Aus 8 or 14c28n😁
Sorry. I didnt realize 14c was a scanvic steel. Thank you for enlightning me.
I almost bought that one. Wish it were bigger tho. 3.5” blades are more my thing for edc. My hands can’t fit well with medium knives like the Bugout
That it would be great to have a 3.5”
Thanks for the review. For $30, I’ll probably pick it up.
Definately will pick one up.
Ahhh yes. The same kind of lock, I almost lost a finger to, and AUS 8. NEVER again. I'll pass.
