I think it's time for a challenge for Connor: 204,5 km on standard production rollers and 54,5 km on these - the whole Paris-Roubaix route. Switching between them at the same distances where pavé sectors of the race start and end. If it sounds too easy, he should then try to beat the fastest time the race was ever won with!
So, its not perfect. What it is, is someone making something with their own hands, out of their element, out of thir comfort zone, with help of someone than knows how to make sure nothing horrible happened. That's what anything in life is about. Firsts. Well done.
It's actually really sad that as a child he didn't have the opportunities to work with tools but seeing him working with them and enjoying it really makes me happy....
Im the same just recently started doing my own work on my bike. My excuse was rich parents. Wasnt allowed to touch a dam thing everything was deemed too expensive in the house and garden. And most things were no go.
Conor that was a brilliantly entertaining video, your positivity is great and your bottle to actually ride on those is admirable, well done, you certainly put a smile on my face, more please.
The bumpy rollers made me laugh - it is my understanding that having the bearings perfectly concentric with the rollers is important. I would mount the wood blocks in the pvc then rig up the pvc so you can spin it and mark the centre of the wood so the bearings are positioned better.
Love the enthusiasm coming from learning new things. The rollers are incidental to watching the process of goal, design, procurement, construction and use. Well done Conor (and your brother in law).
I love these videos showing you how to make useful bike stuff at home. I actually used Jon's video from a while ago to make a bike rack. Also, your brother in law is great at this stuff...GCN should hire him to do more of these videos 🙂
Fair play for your first time doing wood work Connor. They look a bit bumpy but definitely usable if needed. Also great work in your presenting. You're really getting the knack of it too.
Paused on 3:23 just to say how entertaining I'm finding this video already, clearly this is going to be unattainable for the majority of viewers but who doesn't love watching someone who has no DIY experience "have a go", our world was built by building originally "having a go". Oh and I definitely share Conor's DIY mantra of "may need an axe, just because I think it's cool".
As a health and safety (OHS) professional with OCD, I don't know what was hitting more triggers - watching Conor cut wood with a rusty saw, Nigel's use of his hammer drill to core holes for the axles, or using a rectangular piece of wood to reinforce a round roller. My left eye wouldn't stop twitching for the entire show. The end product reminded me of those wheeled Fisher Price toys that wobble as your toddler pulled them along. Kudos to the boys for puling it off though. I hope Nigel knows first aid...
So many ways not to do this job.... 😱 Bawlsey actually riding it and most importantly it’s in GCN colours! With a couple of changes it might have worked surprisingly well. Well done [for surviving] Connor and BIL Nigel.
Nice, I actually did the same last week. Only I used a hole saw to get the exact diameter of the pvc tube. Then drill the middle hole bigger for the bearing. This way it is nice and centered.
I love these DIY projects with an assistant carpenter and a fully equipped barn. Somehow, it makes me want to do some tinkering and build a plane or something.
Great video!! But just a future safety tip... you should be wearing a particle mask while sanding treated lumber. I believe it still contains small amounts of arsenic.not as bad as it used to be but regardless of the chemicals used you should definitely not inhale them.
Incredible how fast Conor became really great fit to GCN presenting team. He is very natural and his videos are always fun. I’m happy they didn’t take themselves too seriously with this project and kept it realistic. Is result bodge? Maybe! But worth it! Thanks Conor!
A great DIY but I think I’d prefer something off the shelf. Considering the wheel speed when rollers are in use, that looks a little bit “bumpy” for my liking. Good effort though.
This video just made me so much happier about the order for a new set of Tacx Antares rollers I just placed. And now I don’t even mind that I paid over RRP for them either. 😝😂
I learnt 2 things from this video. 1. Conor (or his family) have a Dombermann, ahhhhhh lovely dog. 2. Conor did not do Leaving Cert Construction Studies...
Iv never seen someone so good at pretending to do work on a video he is like when u get the kids to help u and make them think they done most the work Ha ha
Nice to see a home workshop and barn look like a real workshop and barn rather than Hollywood set. Good job on your first power tools attempts, but I suspect Hambini will take exception to your hole saw technique for the bearing seats.
To avoid or reduce wobble, mark the centre of the plug before drilling. Do this with it in place but not glued. If you don’t have a centre marker, find something with parallel sides roughly the same as the radius of the roller. Lay the roller on a flat surface, put the marker up against it and draw a line across the plug. Turn the roller 1/3 and repeat, and do the same again. You should end up with a small triangle, in which you can easily mark the centre. Remove from tube then, as with a previous comment, drill straight!
8:14 I hate to be that guy but filter your breathing for this kind of sanding. On first order to keep the sawdust out of your lungs. On higher order that might be treated wood or mold that you're breathing in. Good for you for taking on the challenge and learning to use tools and fabricate!
That this video was posted on the same day as the Augustin Hincapie video, I would say they are perfect dichotomy . One, an example of beautiful artistic engineering and design, the other an ugly bodge. I'll leave it to the viewers to decide which is which....Edit to add: I hope Pinarello doesn't find out you put that beautiful bike on those rollers..
Hy guys, what road tyres would you recommend? I now have continental gatorskin, which served me perfectly, but now i'm thinking of buing Vittoria corsa control g2 with tan wall, but i'm open to suggestions. What do you say, which one is better?
So many experts on here. It's good to make stuff even if it's not a real roller.. When you looked at the title did you think they were going to be brilliant? 👨🚀👨🚀
Correct title should have been "How To make a realistic Paris - Roubaix Simulator for 20 Pound" :D
And he might've just invented gravel rollers :)
@@jeskli11 And of course bunny hopping between the rolers so as not to loose time.
@@jeskli11 Good ideal, but it should be Hank's new challenge!
@@davepratt9909 Hank's already done quite a few challenges, now it should be someone else's turn. But if Hank wants to join, then... 😂

I had no idea that GCN stood for Global Carpentry Network.
Greg Loper u have a good sense of humour
Paris Roubaix rollers ;)

This will come in handy next time I self-isolate on a farm with a fully equipped workshop.
Exactly.
They have another thats simpler, but... Ir seems highly flamable
His most important decision was asking Nigel for help. Love his digs.
Conor that was a brilliantly entertaining video, your positivity is great and your bottle to actually ride on those is admirable, well done, you certainly put a smile on my face, more please.
Well, that's what left to do, when all 14k goes to Pinarello :D
Nigel for #NextGCNtechPresenter
Nigel and the bloke who did the cobbles the other day (George?) should have their own segment
@@alexiswhelan4058 YES! The Nigel and George minute, where they talk about whatever they want to talk about. Tools, cake, beer, whatever!
@@billinhouston3291 Haha love it
GCN rollers with real Irish road feel
You've got to keep the Irish feel!
Those rollers look like they run smoother than some of the lanes local to me. ;)
Zwift compatible? Nah, looks more like Sufferfest.
9:46 “So what we need to do is put this square peg into this round hole”
That’s exactly how to make a round peg, good for you.😂
and make sure the bearings aren't aligned
The bumpy rollers made me laugh - it is my understanding that having the bearings perfectly concentric with the rollers is important.
I would mount the wood blocks in the pvc then rig up the pvc so you can spin it and mark the centre of the wood so the bearings are positioned better.

Haha! Glad you're enjoying the video - having a go is what it's all about!
I hope we'll see a certain ex-Cervelo test team rider attempt to build a DYI smart trainer next ;)
If he can do it, then it's a bodge
He's still busy with changing an inner tube.......
Just 3D print it.
I'll just pop into my barn in my 4th floor flat
Same 2nd floor.
I have 4 and 1200 acres of land, not everyone lives in the city.
Well done boys! First bike rollers made for cobblestones training.💪 it's definitely a hack.

Glad you painted it red. It might hide the blood when the whole thing explodes. Maybe safer as a bench. :) Well done. Very entertaining.

Awesome. Great job you two. That’s what made the world great. People in need made what they needed.
Nice, I actually did the same last week. Only I used a hole saw to get the exact diameter of the pvc tube. Then drill the middle hole bigger for the bearing. This way it is nice and centered.
Don't know which makes me happier: Connor's amazing attitude, his dog, or his Wookie impression at 19:25!
20:13 Nigel comes out of nowhere!
🤣🤣 Ha ha ha done well with that saw .good job.
Oh Connor, you'd make a good tradesman cry 😂🤣😂🤣
I was so glad Nigel was there because it would be dangerous to leave Conor on his own ;-)
Great rollers for lock down. Simulate the quality of the UK roads at home with the GCN Rock N Rollers. Bringing the pot holes to your front room.
Best moment? Nigel standing on a crate to use the Conor's giant size work bench...
Connor has managed to invent a new product: The cobbled classics trainer!
Watch with captions turned on!!! Could not stop laughing 😂 😂 😂
I love these DIY projects with an assistant carpenter and a fully equipped barn. Somehow, it makes me want to do some tinkering and build a plane or something.
It's like watching Jack Whitehall's simple brother. Love it.
1:18 when you are hardwired to bunnyhop and forgot how to walk on flat ground ;) :D
Excellent vid and 10/10 for effort. Bodge, but a very entertaining bodge.👍
The red sneakers with the Pinarello in the back was a fooken great visual. Kudos Conor, you belong in front of a camera.
Great work. That was a lot of fun to watch and impressive you managed to make some. Great host too
Pure entertainment, much needed in our current situation. Conor always makes me laugh. Thanks!

Nope, hasn't for about 17 years. Unless he is using really old lumber. (or marine)

Cheers Lukáš! We're really proud of Conor's presenting. His DIY skills? Less so. Thanks for watching!
I only really watched this for Zoe! I had a Doberman called Zoe also, great dogs. Rollers were rubbish ;~]
should have kept the points on the timbers; much more aerodynamic
You guys turn out better and better content while on lockdown. It goes to show that it’s all about the story and not the budget.
We prefer the term 'Rolling out content'... 😂
Conor is lucky to have been born in an era where it is possible to make a living out of cycling and related activities.
nice one gcn video savior nigel!
A great DIY but I think I’d prefer something off the shelf. Considering the wheel speed when rollers are in use, that looks a little bit “bumpy” for my liking. Good effort though.
How was your ride? A little shaky.
Yeah true. A used set of rollers is like 20-30 and you may even get some for free because a lot of people are upgrading to smart trainers anyway.
When Conor says "Plank number 2"... I'm not sure if he's referring to Dan or Si there...
Nice gravel mode rollers.
I want to see a segment with Nigel and George!
Great stuff, men. Thanks for the help, Nigel.
Lol that's really fun, added that you put the Pinarello under the axe and hacksaw...
Absolute gold! Can we do it? Sure we might aswell give it a lash! Perfect rollers for the cobbles warm-ups :)
This video just made me so much happier about the order for a new set of Tacx Antares rollers I just placed. And now I don’t even mind that I paid over RRP for them either. 😝😂
i vote use a 3" hole saw for the end plugs. Then use a step up bit to keep the hole for the bearing centered. Bravo gentlemen.
also chop up a couple of 3 inch pvc couplers to fit over the ends to keep the belt in place. I still like the rubber inner-tube belt idea.
Thanks for the advice!
Hahaha loved this video! Thanks for these great 20min of watching...

That looked like a lot of fun and made a great video! Way to roll!
I can’t get over how big that pinarello frame is
Now your on a roll!
THE most important thing is to get the bearings centered on the roller and it was cocked up. It's like Hovis hill ffs!
You should make a Conor builds series like gmbns Blake builds.
That saw has seen better days!
DIY rollers for practicing the cobbles LOL!
Yeessss we need this
That saw doesn’t look 👀 like it’s been used for a while??? HaHaHa
i would have cut a circle for the wooden axle pieces with a jigsaw., ideally a big circle cutter but they can be pricey.
The perfect gravel bike trainer.
That’s it we made our own rollers now to leave them on the shed to never be ridden again
