I took a pic of a cool self-closing latch I found at a ranch that's been around since at least the 1800s sometime. Still works great! Can't attach here it seems so I sent separately

You lock your gates according to what you need.
My convenience can’t be considered.
My Leroy has unlocked every gate and let himself and the herd out too many times.
Had to get them rounded up out of front yards, alleys, and from the railroad tracks behind my pasture. That’s when I get scared.
My main gate has a tow chain wrapped around it and hooked to the fence. So far he hasn’t figured that out.
My side gate by the garage has a chain wrapped around with a lock on it. He hasn’t learned to use a key yet!
My chainlink gate in the backyard going to the barns behind the house has parachute rope with a carabiner lock . That horse knows how to let everyone in the backyard if I don’t lock it.
He will work on a gate until he gets it unlocked and knows which way it needs to swing in order to get in the yard or out of the pasture.
That horse is too smart for his own good! And when you got 3 horses and 5 donkeys on the loose and going different directions it can get scary or you get down right pissed off, frustrated, and overwhelmed.
There’s no leading because they are on an all out “FREEDOM”run. They can’t be bribed with there favorite cookies either. They get a ornery playful attitude and make you prove they got to listen.
If I get the zero turn mower after them they will head to the gate they let themselves out of lickety split.
Thankfully I got a few neighbors that let me know they’re out and will help me get them back in.

Some of those gate latches were pretty cool and inventive. I'm kind of embarrassed at my Jerry rigged things I've used in the past :-) oh well. The gates stayed closed anyway and I could open them when I wanted to which I guess was the real goal.
Hey I've Jerry rigged many things in my life. Nothing wrong with that if it works. Usually Jerry rigging things doesn't look pretty but it works & that's all that counts.

Great little video with all those gate latches. Ours are a common one in the UK , on which you have a lever that you lift up to allow the gate to open, then you just push the gate back to close it and the lever drops down, so the gate can't open. You can open it one handed if the gate is hanging correctly, but there's not much leeway, so you do have to adjust it from time to time. The main problem with these type is, that lazy careless people just slam them shut, and don't check the gate has located shut properly.
Called my new young horse Smokey, and call her Mokey for short. Been watching too many of your videos, Rick!
There's an interesting design of gate latch that I came across at a national trust property, which has a bolt thing that has a lever at the top of the gate to open it, but there's also a second piece attached to the pole which allows the gate to close without the bolt having to be retracted (when the gate closes the piece on the pole lifts up to allow the gate to latch)

Found out last thursday that locks were the last of my worries about horse escaping. An argument between 2 horses made the strongest Shire mare kick the brand new 2 inch tube steel fence. Ripped all 1/2bolts and tabs clean off, dented in multiple places with a nice curve in it from top to bottom and sent the thing 16ft away into the other pen. 12yo, built like a tank we knew she was strong but damn.
At least if the barn catch fire, I know the horses will be fine, she'll kick the walls out of it !

Those are great, especially on a motor where you got to wire all the different winding together for what Voltage you want.
Happy the boys have good, dense bales...no hay here for 3 years now equals $100 bales and lots of horses going for slaughter this winter 😒

@@Veikra very sad but we had 3 dry summers in a row, so hardly any hay in the county or near it...supply & demand means few can afford to feed their horses, cows or sheep, so they go to auction. Devastating! Horse owners should take Rick's example: GRAIN YOUR HORSES (rice bran!)...add tim cubes & alfalfa pellets if hay supply is low. My girls are plump & ready for -50C

I do alot of the same thing with bales of hay at my place. I'll throw a bale on the 4 wheeler and go spread that 50-60 lbs bale into 6 or 7 piles around the pasture. 2 or 3 fluffed out flakes and it looks like alot more hay than if left as a flake.
Name of black spray anti-rust stuff please? I really checked both channels before asking and I fast forwarded through the tailgate videos, but I don't see the name of it. I'll feelije a stupid human if its in this video but after I paused watching it! I picked up a wrought iron trellis that has some rust in the places the decorative iron meets up and the spaces are too tight for steel wool so I was looking for some rust stopping product that worked without removing rust first, and is also black. Thank you Rick, it's almost celebration time on Memorial Day. I went to my towns ceremony at a cemetery this morning.

Hey Rick- a lot of well pressure tanks have an air bladder that can lose air over time, & when they aren't at the right PSI it will definitely cause the water pressure to drop significantly as the pressure switch cycles. There is a process (easy but several steps) for getting it to the right PSI- talk to a well guy or maybe it's online (I could also explain it in an email as I have to do it at least once a year..) Hope that helps!
Just got to be careful refilling the air. I blew up my last water tanks bag. You should check and add air when it's empty of water. I added air when it was full of water and the bag popped. It sucked that it did that. It was a newer tank too
