Love the bit at 6:42 - 7:18. It shows how you can't easily assume anything at a crossing. And I kind of figured that the train approaching would've been a speeding Amtrak train, complete with F40PH locomotive! I also recall that area the video was filmed in, the railroad is now owned by CSX, and they operate the freight trains there now (just like where I live, taking over from Conrail as well.)
And something like that happened in real life last week, in New Hampshire. Some guy drove right through a lowered crossing gate, thinking yet another slow freight train was approaching, only for it to be a speeding Amtrak train that instantly killed him!
Yep, Conrail used to also run through my hometown of Brockton MA. Then of course when Conrail folded in 1999, CSX took over the freight train service in my area (though the track line running through here is currently owned by the MBTA, as they run commuter trains through here.)
5:08 Thaz why you should always expect more than 1 train at a crossing that has 2 or more tracks. It's the train you don't see that could take your life. It's better to lose a few minutes in your life than to lose your life in a few minutes.
Pretty much all the railroad crossings in my area are protected with gates, even where there is light or moderate vehicle traffic! The MBTA upgraded them with the gates in 1997 when they bought the track line and began running 25 commuter trains a day. Regarding 4:31 - 5:43, I knew EXACTLY what was going to happen. And hey; Conrail used to run freight trains through my area, too! (Now they are run by the CSX.)
That man in the work truck was so impatient so he went around the crossing gates and then stopped and looked to his left and he saw the train fast approaching The train killed him
Ooh, yeah. Dragnet is one of my favorite shows. That episode you refer to is raw even by today's standards. That monologue about what happens when you crash your car was tough to hear.
I have been collecting old corporate safety films, but they're getting scarce. I have one that is way too long to fit in youtube's ten minute limit that I'm trying to edit and split in two. I hate doing that.
Pretty interesting. And of course Conrail freight trains are shown here, and now CSX operates in that area after they acquired roughly half of the old Conrail routes (including in my area), while Norfolk Southern got the other half.
I remember there was an unprotected crossing in Taunton MA that lacked "STOP" or "YIELD" signs. But in early 2016, they installed crossing gates and signals there, thus upgrading it to a protected crossing.
Biff Slabmeat the wife should've gone to the restraint and got the seats at the restraunt and Tom should've just been patient but instead he took a risk and lost his life.

Timeless clip.
The guy's name is Thomas.
As Sergeant Joe Friday briskly said in "Dragnet 1967", "it doesn't take long to die."
From teaching railroad safety to being one of the most congested networks in the US. Crazy
For all you rail buffs: Defect detector on the tracks at 9:18
Tom really needed to calm down. The guy doing the show should have warned Tom to be patient.
MFXdump I'm pretty sure tom didn't actually DIE just an example
5:09 death

The gte company may be extinct, but its message isn’t stop look listen live
These train crossings scare me....this is how I lost both my parents. their car was crossing the tracks and hit by a train.
Wow, so sorry to hear. Were you very young when it happened?
Stop, Look, Listen and Live
A moving train does not forgive
Think twice before crossing that gate
A second later and it's too late
Once you ride onto that track
It's a one way trip from which you won't come back
When tons of steel meet human flesh
Steel will win, no need to guess
It's against the law and common sense
Don't ever cross a gate or fence
Wait right there it won't be that long
Take a chance and you'll be forever gone
It's a game that you cannot win
Few have lived to ever try it again
So listen up and play by the rules
Taking risks is a game for fools
Look both ways and stay alive
There may be others in the car you drive
When you hear a train that's passing through
Remember they've got a right to live, too
So Stop, Look, Listen and Live
A moving train does not forgive
Take it slow, don't be in a rush
Or your dreams and more that train will crush

And at crossings that have multiple tracks if only one train is present & after it passes, always assume a second train is coming on the other track!
Very dramatic coverage and for a company to do it is a good example for the rest
Sounds like "Happy Anniversary, Sweetheart" just became Tom's epitaph...
Conrail? How cool!
Yep, Conrail used to also run through my hometown of Brockton MA. Then of course when Conrail folded in 1999, CSX took over the freight train service in my area (though the track line running through here is currently owned by the MBTA, as they run commuter trains through here.)
I have Maryland midland

Why not build the roads with bridges over the railroad.
5:10 We know what Butthead would say to that.
1:03
fuck, im on drugs
DAMMIT TOM! Always trying to run those crossings.
That man in the work truck was so impatient so he went around the crossing gates and then stopped and looked to his left and he saw the train fast approaching The train killed him

2372 was scrapped around 1984 or 85 there was a collision somewhere on ConRail from an old NTSB report

For example a 60 car freight train traveling at 55mph would take at least a mile to stop.
I'm pretty sure this was just an excuse for some lucky guy at GTE to crack up some old fleet vehicles.
The fine actor at 8:05 driving the truck is my father!!!!
Is he okay? 😂😵💫🤤😎😜
i remember GTE. bell atlantic bought them then they became verizon, everything around here still says GTE though.

Don't unprotected crossings have Stop or Yield signs now?
GeorgeUKCFC yes

There's an unprotected crossing near where I live that has neither.
Operation Lifesaver Stop Look Listen And Live!
Penn Central 3:01
I remember this video from driver's ed.
Yeah, that's gonna leave a mark...
I didn't even see Tom inside the truck after it hit. Also, why did it show the truck stopped on the tracks before it hit?
Amtrak f40phr 406 Pretty low budget special effects department! 🤪
In fact, I had to edit a few minutes from this one to make it fit. :(
RXR RAILROAD CROSSING X
Why don't they look?
This should be riffed by rifftrax
@59phonebone
there's some corporate safety films on archive.org and AV geeks
Wasn’t there a Conrail collision that involved 12 or more units that ended with 8 getting scrapped??
I blame this accident on the wife. She was rushing him to get home for his anniversary!
Biff Slabmeat the wife should've gone to the restraint and got the seats at the restraunt and Tom should've just been patient but instead he took a risk and lost his life.
5:00
9:00 Is that an FRA violation if the train didn't stop?
I Don’t Know But I Think It Is.
5:10>> OHH HELL NO!!!
Does anybody know what the phone-walkie talkie thing the GTE employee is using at 3:35 called?
It's a telephone
stop red lights
Never heard the horn blow for the rural crossing. Trains don't always blow their horns like they should.
+Marky mark Probably because of some stupid "No Horn Zone" law!
In my area, the trains don't blow their horns at private railroad crossings, but they definitely do at the public ones.
uh oh!!!
What's GTE
A Telephone Service
@@solebuda3341 General Telephone & Electric.
If that did cost Tom his life, why wasn't he in the truck when it hit?
Amtrak f40phr 406 They didn’t even bother putting a dummy in the truck. 😂
maybe he went undercover and GTE just wanted you to think he died
I am so sorry. This gives all the more reason to fear trains. I know how easily they can kill.
you could upload now! ^^
whats number 1 cause
is this just acting ?
YES

EVIL TRAINS
Ruin good vehicles and good ladders for this?
What, no horn blaring which the driver could have heard?
