Problem started years ago when the bus operator's union demanded it's not their responsibility to make people pay. So they went and hired fare inspectors, but there's no way you can hire enough for all muni lines, on top of that, they allowed free rides to youth, disabled, seniors with low income but they never verify after year one. Allowing all doors boarding is another ridiculous idea, basically letting everyone on the bus from the back for free. If they want changes, they must reform the current policy, not cutting lines.
@@cory5197 Operator can simply stop driving, let the rest of the paying riders force the unpaid off the bus. This is how it's done in other countries, it's time to change the social behaviors and entitlement we currently have in this city.
I got on a bus last week, prob. 1 out of 5 people paid. Their enforcement is stupidly flawed. It's like asking to tax restaurants because our grocery stores let people walk out freely with products.
Just hire enforcement officers since less than half the riders are actually paying. 100% paying ridership should cover its own cost compared to what it is now. Or maybe move the clipper readers to the outside of the bus and only let the door open with a successful clipper tap like a gate per person.
Enforcement also keeps the bus safer. I ride the bus daily. There was a night where we were passing through tenderloin and a guy got on the bus, sat, pulled down his pants and pooped IN THE BUS. Everyone scattered out the next stop from the smell. I've also seen people running after a leaving bus and banging on the door until the glass cracked. $2.50 muni fare is still gonna be cheapest paid form of transportation compared to an uber, bike rental, escooter (lime scooter's 1 hour pass is $15 is so much higher).
they are threatening to cut these iconic money making lines as a threat to get voters to fund more spending and maintain the status quo instead of actually making reforms on Muni such as reducing stops or lines that have low ridership
Ummm, SFMTA needs to figure it out before the public gives up on the network and seeks a private entity to take over. How about cutting some of those jobs of drivers who do nothing for what they're paid anyway. Maybe forcing people to pay their fares by denying any entrance, ride, or access to the system could get the money they need.
Honestly, if they start enforcing the fact that people need to pay their fares, it would get better....I am a regular rider, i pay everytime, but sitting on the bus, i rarely see people pay.
I'ts mostly to get rid of the operator controlling the cable car. I mean there's Waymo now, theres ZOOX known as Robotaxis. Theyre pushing transportation autopilot now a days causing more UNEMPLOYMENT. So if you're telling me because of BUDGET CUTS thats BS!! that's just an excuse...
There aren't as many workers headed to offices, many businesses moved to Texas. Many are working from home. Not as many tourists. Also there are not as many working class people living in the city due to high rents. Retailers have shut their doors, not many workers taking Muni to those retail jobs since they're out of business. There has always been fare invaders, that isn't the problem. Thank you London Breed and some of the city council members that made it happen. How to increase ridership, partner with BART. Introduce more festivals into the city. Allow small businesses to participate. Lower taxes for all businesses. We've already passed prop 36 that's a good thing. Take a hands on approach to homelessness, stop giving free money to non profits. Introduce plain clothes police onto buses, not looking for fare invaders but those that cause issues on buses. Do this on the streets and inside stores. Partner with retailers.
Hopefully with a new mayor maybe San Francisco can return to it's former glory. But don't forget this is a city that razed it's historic Fox theatre on Market street in 1963, and did absolutely nothing to stop the demolition of Playland at the beach in 1972, leaving San Francisco as one of the few major cities in the USA without an amusement park. Doesn't surprise me that it would get rid of it's historic cable cars and possibly Bart too!!!! 👍🌉
Most people do not pay for their fares. Ridership increase means nothing when people do not pay their fares
Nah, Blue States and Blue cities just cannot manage their funds correctly…
Yeah they need to go back to the old ways of only opening the front door 😂
@@kenjones6046 blue states and cities just can’t manage their funds correctly.
Exactly, NOBODY pays their fare, because social justice or some other BS reason.
Nope, they only count the paying riders so the fare evaders are not counted in these new numbers.

True, but at the same time, people in SF are so unhinged, if the operator enforced it, it would been an assault to the operator

Closer to 2.5%

Reduced street parking, no great highway, and less muni. Whats next higher gas prices? Oh wait thats already gonna happened.
We are the tech center of the world but have the most backward and antiquated public transportations in the world. Shameful.
Show that video from a few years ago where no one pays to ride.

or idk what about lowering the cost of ridership & making it affordable instead

Why did we spend billions on a 2mi tunnel?
That Van Ness bus line killed businesses too
don't cut the Cable Car! Thats a tourist attraction
And not to mention a big symbol of the city recovering from the 1906 earthquake!!!
they are threatening to cut these iconic money making lines as a threat to get voters to fund more spending and maintain the status quo instead of actually making reforms on Muni such as reducing stops or lines that have low ridership
Reduce the service.
If prople don't pay to ride, they essentially said the service is not needed. Reduce/cut services. People can walk.
👍🏽for the people who don’t pay their way
75% of weekday ridership not 75% down. Very different statistics.

Private cars support mass transport before ride share.
This is just a scare to justify higher parking meter rates.
OH YOU SHUT UP, BRIAN THE TRUMPSTER FREAK!!!!!
Cut the fat pensions as well.
who's fault is that with rider ship fees?
too many crazy and dangerous people in the bus
Only few pay the fare and I haven’t seen a fare enforcement happen in the last 5 years. Drivers can’t do much if 4 out 5 don’t pay.

Dumb lockdowns still taking casualties
Stop spending on nonsense, like giving alcoholics free alcohol, and pay for things that matter
Call Muni’s bluff, no 30% pay raise to bus drivers.
That's not gonna happen with the unions backing them. Just look at the raise the UPS workers and the long shoremen got!!!! It's Crazy😱
Maybe they shouldnt of wasted all that money to change the color and branding of the old iconic symbol.
I know, since our mass transportation systems are doing so well, lets build a billion dollar high speed rail system. Keep voting Democrat.
This is dumb. The 1 is already so crowded. (And never on time) They need to be more efficient with their operations and administrations.
