  • Enjoy (UNEDITED) footage of the reasoning we did with Half Pint at Solid Agency in Kingston, Jamaica in 2017.
In this clip reggae legend explains why he is one of the few reggae legends that has the rights to his music.
Half Pint goes on to explain how Sugar Minott taught him how to register his music so he would receive royalties.

Half Pint is a gem and one of Jamaica's top icon. Living legend. Artist like Halfpint and many others gone on before him are the reason why so many in their generation survived their generation. Their music is pure, clean and natural. One could walked freely without fear and enjoy a good night out. Thank you for the good music and teaching!
May love and blessings guides you, as you continue through life's journey❤️

This reminds me of the current situation of Terror Fabulous. You can still buy his music & the record companies benefit, yet he his currently dirt poor & cannot afford to get the medical treatment he needs. You really have some wicked characters in this industry. How can they still be eating off Terror when he can’t afford to feed himself.

Can't this PRS be workshoped to artists who don't have any knowledge and information regarding this association. It's a long time reggae artists have been robbed by crooked and scrupulous managers/producers. I strongly believe that even the reggae lcons and Legends past and present need to be registered so that their families can benefit. lt hurts listening to interviews the sad stories about the difficulties and challenges that the living Legends are facing.. Give thanks to Half Pint for sharing this information. Greetings l and l bring from Azania (South Africa 🇿🇦) and to all the Ragamuffin 🟥🟨🟩

As I understand it, music schools in Jamaica, like the one at Edna Manley College for example, are actually teaching musicians and artists about this stuff. But remember - publishing is only half an artists revenue - the other half is royalties from the sales of the recording itself. That can be much harder for an artist without the help of a manager or a lawyer. But every recording contract should contain details about when and how often the label is expected to payout to the artist.

Big up to the Legendary great Half Pint, was a friend of my Late Brother, Education is the Key, well spoken Gentleman with a lot of Knowledge about the industry! If I’m not mistaken the group sublime sung over one of his song and it went multiplatinum, he and his manager whom I knew was well compensated from that deal!

Good question but having to pay royalties doesn't mean you have to tour with an artist and he came together with Sublime to tour. So hopefully Sublime was doing good by reggae artists.

PRS (The Performing Rights Society), ASCAP, SOCAN and others are not actually publishing companies. They're NGOs created to collect and distribute royalties that must be paid to an artist anytime their intellectual property (song) is performed (or played on recording) publicly. And that's by international law. JACAP is the Jamaican version. Unfortunately they're chronically underfunded, from my understanding. No surprise in a country with limited resources.
Very glad he was able to get a publishing deal with BMG after the Sublime thing. Once they see that an artist's intellectual property is out there earning money - they'll go and chase after every little penny. And stop anyone who's licensing the song without paying the artist. But remember - publishing (intellectual property) is only half of an artists revenue. The other half is the royalties owed from the direct sale of the recording. THAT's what he means when he talks about not knowing if the cheque you receive actually reflects the number of records sold.
