- After a long and troubled restoration, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad finally debuted ex-Chesapeake & Ohio 1309 on their Cumberland to Frostburg excursions in the summer of 2022. Railfans came from far and wide to see the sight of the mighty 2-6-6-2 tackling the mountains of Allegany County, MD. This video was filmed over four days in May, June, and August.
Love the sound of that whistle!!

That 6 chime also sounds great, although I think it doesn’t fit the engine too well. I think the hooter is more fitting

I heard the NYC whistle will be on 1309 for a few weeks. Eventually, 1309 will have PRR K4 1361’s whistle for a fundraiser excursion train to benefit 1361’s restoration.

I have other engagements that weekend, but I am hoping see 1309 and 2102 on the last weekend in October (plans subject to change as always).
Will you see 1309 on the Polar Express excursions?

Was 1309 your first train you filmed following your UK trip or did you see something else before it. Also, how does it feel filming American trains again after filming a lot of trains from the UK?
I did a photo charter at the Locust Heights & Western RR before doing the final chase in this video, that will be posted next weekend. 1309 makes quite a stark contrast with the little Welsh tank engines that's for sure! Driving & parking is a lot easier here but only having one run per day is a bummer when the UK lines will often run 4-8 departures per day.

I rode in the cab on August 20 and chased it August 21. My friend Grant came along with me and rode in the cab on August 19.
That cab ride must've been pretty cool.
@@SmokyMtnSteam it's $250 per person one way and $500 roundtrip in the same cab. We rode in it westbound.
Nice filming. Looks like the loco has carried at least two different whistles in preservation, what sounds very much like a N&W ‘hooter’, do you what the other one is? (Sounds like NKP at a guess?)

1309 for her first steam up wore a Western Maryland 3 chime off a 4-8-4 “Potomac”. After that she was fitted with her typical N&W hooter. For one weekend she wore the PRR 3 shine that will be used on 5550 once she’s complete. Right now she’s wearing a NYC 6 chime, but in early October she will go back to the hooter, with her wearing PRR 1361’s 3 chime somewhere in there.
There might be a few more coming soon aswell ;).

Wait, did they change the whistle on the locomotive? I remember in earlier videos it had a hooter type fright whistle… Ok never mind. I guess 1309 has two whistles then

@@SONICX1027 we had a volunteer engineer bring it and ask if he could put it on. Naturally we said yes. It will likely stay on until early October.

NYC Nathan 6 chime should remain on 1309 (I have nothing against 1309's C&O hooter). This is what you would've heard when the mighty Hudsons pulling trains echoed through the mountains I also think there is an "h" in Alleghany. Also 12:09 to 13:25 has to be one of the best shots
I prefer the Hooter, but that NYC 6 Chime does sound great, I can’t deny.
The NYC 6 chime is music to my ears. While the hooter might be a more appropriate choice a proper NYC 6 has been vacant from ears for a long long time

What happened to the hooter? Love this whistle just didn’t expect a different one. I know 4014 changed out it’s whistles this year and I much preferred the 844 in it.
To have a running Allegheny, a massive steam loco running, in full excursion services is awesome to me. Most excursion railways seem to mostly be mikados, so to have large steam doing jobs again Is nice. One steam loco id love to see run again is the Yellowstone. I think that’s the most beautiful large steam loco to exist absolute gorgeous paint scheme
They change the whistle sometimes. The Hooter went back on in October.
