What I loved most about this particular episode is how you both shared so much positivity about putting yourself out there on the internet! I’m sure that so many of us watching (with small UA-cam channels) will be inspired to keep posting content that we enjoy, without worrying about any ‘hate’ or ‘negativity’. Thank you Nasir & Faye! 💪🏽

I don’t think that it is important of how many hours we study but it is how effective it is ... actually you can do 5-6 hours a day and this can be more efficient than 15 hours with distrusted mind

@@KharmaKast I spent 2 years studying for a health degree (not medicine) I distinctly remember having a lecture where the lecturer talked about being "clinically dead". i didnt fully understand the point but i distinctly remember them saying that if you stop breathing and your heart stops and then you are revived by CPR, you were not dead when your heart stopped and you stopped breathing. If that is the case, that such a pt is not clinically dead, i would have thought that the pt in your example isnt clinically dead either. Not that i know what they teach in medicine about being clinically dead.

For the question about Open heart surgery - yes, that person is definitely alive in my opinion. It is the same if you say that your car isn't a working car anymore because in a moment a mechanic is changing some parts of the motor. There has to be a place in time when our body isn't on stand by (sleep), but on off mode (surgery or coma) so that someone can change something so that our whole system can continue working.

on the topic of 100 hours of studying in a week, i'd say that i'm a 17 yr old in year 12 currently studying A-levels to get into medicine and i also watched the MDprospect video and thought to myself if Jimmy is doing that in his 20's why not i try and do it now. i did it during the christmas breaks and i do not need to lie because i'm not going to get fame or even a pence here by lying. i did it with the help of my other friend which was in india. we would share our forest w each other each night to see if we've done the hours. yes after that week i was tired, in fact everynight when i was sleeping i was exhausted but physically. i love studying and i try to maintain a 8-12 hr per day. obviously i can't do it everyday and i didn't start like oh i'm gonna start studying 12hr everyday from now on; what i did was pushing myself one step more and more everyday. anyway i think comments can sometimes be read in ways that they are not meant to be read, they can come across as arrogant or rude. anyway i'll be applying to UCL, KCL and 2 orther med schools this year and i hope that i'll see you at KCL one day. also amazing podcasts i'm a big fan. 🤍🤍

The patient is alive because the brain wavelength is still working well I guess but at that time the person continuing being alive is at the doctor hand because any mistake then 😬😬 and yes online lectures really making me lazy to read and reduce the time I leave for reading alone 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️
And you guys shouldn't let negative comments get to you, you really were the one who let me come out of my comfort zone in term of studying and getting things done, always use excuse to be lazy and procastinate which I still do to be honest 😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️ but it's not like before . So the older generation and others who think you're just being internet influencer don't speak for anyone but themselves which is a bitter place apologies to them 😬😌

  • @AlexandraK712

Very interesting philosophical question... heart not beating, lungs not breathing, half of their blood is missing... at that moment, only the machines (ventilator, bypass machine, etc) are keeping the patient "alive" but is the patient alive at this point in time? Well depends on your definition of the word "alive." Some people define it as being able to do activities, having alertness, being able to make decisions, have a conversation, etc. Others can define being "alive" as no matter the activity, i.e. one can simply lay in bed, have oxygen provided manually or not, and have blood circulate. As humans being immobile for a short period of time is normal, we do it every day when we sleep. We are still alive when we're asleep even though we are not doing some exciting activity like drinking wine in Italy; oxygen and blood is present. In my opinion, at that moment in which the patient is fully dependent on machines is still alive because oxygen and blood is being provided regardless how. I can see why a person can argue this patient is not alive at that moment in question because the patient cannot articulate nor perform activities. But it all comes down to how you define the word "alive." Any thoughts?

Hey Nassir, just to comment on the story of the guy having an open heart surgery.. is he alive? is he dead?
The heart isn't beating (flat line), the lungs aren't working, but you forgot something very important that is functioning perfectly: the brain.
If you were there and put some electrodes on his scalp and did an electroencephalogram, you sill see the proof that there is still a life inside. That's why to declare a person brain dead (with two EEGs showing flat lines) is the ultimate thing to cut off the machines.
So yes, he's brain is alive so the guy is alive! :)
Sorry for any mistakes I studied medicine in French hhh

in Pakistan the exams are very competitive in high school. the merit in MBBS in Pakistan is a medical college is top 3% and 10 % weightage of ou merit is middle school 40% highschool score and lastly entrance exams is 50% so at the age of 12 we are trained to study 15 hours daily, causing us to have big hips and pig like shape, but here middle school exams are competitive exams till Entrance exams. the top student are from Lahore in which a kid wanted to be the top 3% percent and dies taking steroids' and sleep deprivation while studying for highschool exams. If Americans and citizens wanted to pass our middle school exams they will fail for 7 years because we have to write 86 pages in 40 minutes. I bet you people will take my comment as a joke but we Pakistanis take 0-level A-level and IB diplomas as a joke. because you people have really easy studies throughout life because the west have a lot of universities and colleges. Pakistan has total 16 med colleges (open merit) while india has 3000 med colleges. so i study 15 hours a day which is normal my friend do like a 19 hours study. but we think its less because we don't waste our time rather we make list of our syllabus and get it done. buy like more than 10 reference books memorize them and get it done. no one from outside Pakistan can pass our exams

I don't know I feel like she thinks that being in medical school makes her better than other people, she needs to humble down because not everybody has the privilege of receiving an adequate education.

Hey Emily! I wanted to reply because I’m sorry that’s how you perceive me. I’ve actually made a video about my journey to medical school which hopefully might dispel the idea that I think I’m better than others as this isn’t the case at all 😁

Wait... you guys had recorded version of lectures before covid in the uk ? What ? Omg that is not the case here in belgium. the lectures were live and you had to be there ... if you were not well thats a pity, you would have to chase other medics for their notes. And still now with some professors they wont agree to record the lecture its sooo annoying !
I hope that it is going to become a thing even after covid here that lecture will be recorded so that you can watch them at home but i doubt it cause they want people to come in person so ...
Anyway ramble sorry i would be curious to know how its like in other countries than belgium or the uk tho

yep in the UK at many universities almost all lectures are recorded and available online! This was not the case at all in Canada and as you said if you missed it tough luck

According to law Belgian, a person is alive when they have brain function. I don't even know if this makes sense in medicine :)
