Ya, my partner has a parrot that cries like a human baby too, she does it at 2am once everyone is asleep, because she finds it hilarious to scare everyone half to death. We know she thinks its funny because after she sees people freak out, she mimics the laugh of a deranged maniac while doing a little happy dance.

[5:00] This hollow tree appears to be a Strangler Fig, a type of parasitic species which grows long vine-like tendrils that surround & consume the resources of another tree. After many years, the Fig's vines have gradually fused together becoming a cylindrical shell which surrounds the trunk & roots of the victim. After the host tree dies, it eventually rots away 'til only the hollow shell of the Strangler Fig remains.

About the tree video: I think it may have been a baobab tree! They’re the biggest trees AND they grow hollow. And little fun fact here: baobabs are used as wells in Africa, because they grow hollow, and the top is opened, and so water gets stuck inside the tree as it rains. Sometimes baobabs are also used as shelter, and the leaves and bark have slight healing properties. That’s also why the baobab is called „the tree of life” in Africa!!

    • @JennyEverywhere
      @JennyEverywhere 8 місяців тому +46

I read a theory once about sirens luring sailors by using baby cries rather than just singing. That's why the sailors would have to plug their ears or else they would always be haunted by what they heard: they would always wonder if they'd abandoned a child. Like, imagine being on that boat in the darkness and hearing a baby screaming somewhere out in the water, and you have to decide whether or not to risk yourself and your crew to find out if it's real.

Makes sense too, in a functional sense.
Steve goes out in a little rowboat to try to rescue a baby the crew hears - perhaps from a nearby shipwreck, or that was left exposed to the elements on a rocky shore or something.
Steve rows off into the darkness… and never returns.
If you hear a baby randomly in the middle of nowhere, seemingly unattended, it stands to reason that the likelihood of danger is higher than average.
Makes me think of a poem about a river siren, and how it describes the situation. Iirc, the translation of the line I’m thinking of is something like:
“I believe, in the end, the waves devoured [him]…” (Lorelei, I think it’s called)c

19:56 bats clean themselves the same way cats do and do it obsessively. If a bat rubs against an object DO NOT TOUCH IT. If you do, you need to go to the doctor asap. Saliva is a rabies vector, and while it can't get through your skin unless you have an open wound, if you touch something a bat has touched and then eat food, wipe your butt, or otherwise bring your hand near an orifice the virus can get in that way. Rabies is 100% fatal once symptoms appear, you cannot wait until you feel ill to go to the doctor. Because rabies treatment is a vaccine, insurance plans will cover it fully as it is preventive care.

But, if you live on the countryside, you can't really go to the doctor whenever you've touched anything in an old barn, or just your wood storage, or whatever, though chances are there that you touched bat stuff. Just wash your hands.

I remember reading about rabies in the environment and supposedly the virus really doesn't do well outside of a living body. I can't remember the specifics tested but it was something like a day later the virus wasn't viable on hard surfaces, so that helps. Of course, I would still bleach the sht out of the area to be sure. There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to germs and viruses.

Hey click!! The girth of the ropes can depend on the size of the ships, but usually you don't want something that's too thick for a line handler to move by hand! They are very heavy, especially when wet, and the creaking noises from the strain on the lines is very loud up close, almost like someone hammering nails into wood, and sometimes, rarely, like gunshots.

24:36 for anyone interested, the tiles are doing this because there's little to no space and grout between them. The concrete underneath, like wooden floors, absorb humidity to a degree and "moves" (expands or retracts) with the humidity and heat/cold, in a sudden change of these parameters, the concrete will react quickly but the tiles will be pushed against one another, the lesser grout gap there is and the higher the chances for it to happen!
I've worked construction for 5 years and seen it happen every time the clients didn't want grout or very thin gaps "because it is ugly"

While the rule might seem like it’s just to preserve the rides quality, the rule is to prevent fatal and even deadly consequences.
A quick flash of light on some of these rides can and have disoriented cast members when traveling behind the dimly lit scenes. Furthermore, some of these rides are the few ones without flashing lights, and the bright flashing light can trigger migraines, sensory overload, and even seizures depending on the medical conditions of those around the person taking flash photography.

They have two full adults and two full children manikins, along with various torsos etc.
Anyway, I had gone in to work with my dad to record some voice overs for the child robot manikin 'Allan'. We had some trouble to begin with that we couldn't get it to speak, but my dad switched tablets and it seemed to work ok. This particular bot has tracking enabled, so its eyes and head move to follow you around the room, and let me tell you the facial expression changes are borderline horror movie.
Couple of days later, they had a technician come in to check the robots (I'm not joking, they're worth so much money. An individual full sized adult is £120k). Anyways, what was creepy was that the technician said that Allan needed work doing, and said he shouldn't have been able to talk/move because his plug wasn't working-

Plastic surgery isn't just cosmetic! It's a really important field of medicine with the ability to profoundly affect someone's mental health.
I'm personally not planning on any elective cosmetic surgeries, but a plastic surgeon was part of my team for a major orthodontic surgery, and then there's burns, injuries, restorations, etc.
But also, if you want plastic surgery bc something specific really bothers you or causes you problems, go for it. It's not my business.
And aging is a weird thing.
Some people age really gracefully in that they adapt to their changing bodies and faces and allow themselves to become someone new.
Some people resist aging with every fiber of their being, seeing every sign of age as a blemish to be corrected, a problem to be solved. I feel bad for these people.

Very true. Some of the reconstructive surgery I've seen in videos, TV shows and photos has been amazing. Even if it is "cosmetic," as long as it's safe and the patient is happier, I don't see any problem with it.
The hand surgeon who did my carpal tunnel release surgery was also a plastic surgeon. I'm pretty sure he retired several years ago. You can't tell I had surgery unless you are looking very closely because he hid the scar in a natural fold/line and stitched it to minimize the final scar. I was really impressed.

Active sonar sends out the ping that you are familiar with (the sounds from hollywood are not correct btw) and passive sonar is just listening. Sonar is THE loudest man made sound and can be heard from an ungodly far distance. If you were THAT close to a sub when it sends a ping, I have no doubt you would die nearly instantly from ruptured organs, brain bleeds, and so on and so forth.

Apparently, according to an investigation done by a UA-camr named tuv, him and his team have been doing a lot of shady business in their own establishments and have been accused of multiple crimes, such as being in possession of expired medicine.
Yeah, that whole situation is incredibly disturbing.

I've been watching Luxeria recently who reacts to videos on makeup, plastic surgery, and the like. She recently looked at these pictures and was also saying that there was a lot of context missing and these videos were taken soon after the surgery before the skin and muscles had time to heal and relax. I'm not more curious about the additional investigation that's been done so far, though.
I agree that everyone is lovely as they are, but I'm seeing the motion that if the changes you make improve your quality of life they can be worth it. It's when body modification becomes an addiction or people choose to go to sketchy doctors that things really go downhill.

For 17:11- Fun fact; in the 17 and 1800s the search for cadavers for medical training (and other pursuits) led to grave robbing becoming a huge issue. It was so huge that there was a booming industry for theft-proof coffins. The people who could afford it would get cages like this (mortsafes) over their graves which extend deep underground, or else they'd have ridiculous multi-layered coffins made of wood, metal, even concrete and with crazy straps and locks on them. And you can bet the medical practicioners who had created this booming black market invested in their own so their competitors wouldn't dig them up. Cadaver research has an absolutely crazy history. And medicine in general.
Edit: whoops, I got too excited and paused so I missed that someone explained it literally seconds later 😅

17:11 Depending on the period, there have been 2 reasons for that:
    - Body snatchers
    - Grave robbers
But not zombies or vampires. During the times when people believed in vampires, if they had any doubt, they used various methods, like burying the corpse upside down (so they would dig the wrong way in their attempt leave their grave) or putting a big rock between the corpse's jaws (I don't know if it's suposed to work as some sort of pacifier?).
*EDIT:* As TheMaverket stated down below, in this particular case it's not for one of thoses reasons. Apparently that grave has a set of stones on top of it that some people grew to consider cursed. So, inevitably, some people tempered with it, stole them for a while (who knows in what supertitious purpose), and even threw them in a river (in 1982). So it was decided to protect the grave from more desecrations, before someone really steal those stones without the possiblity to recover them. The protective iron grate was hence added in 1985. Oh, and it's the grave of Seath Mor Sgorfhiaclach, in Scottland. If you watch photos of it from before and after the installation of the grate, you will notice that the headstone have been change. I don't know when or why it was done. If you have those answers, I'm curious to hear them.

The grave cage is called a mort safe. They can be made of cement too, shaped like a tunnel over the grave. Mort safes deterred grave robbing because of the difficulty getting in and the noise, both increased the chance of being caught.

@@sandyhenderson441they were also used to deter body snatchers as well as grave robbers, but it didn’t work as well on the former because people who couldn’t afford a mortsafe didn’t have loads of expensive grave goods, but they still had a corpse! however, people still figured out a way to protect the bodies of their loved ones (sorta) - they’d use loose stones! if the stones were messed up, they knew the grave had been messed with, and could go “oi, someone’s nicked my nan! give her back!” and hopefully get the bodysnatcher caught

    • @poisonedkilljoy9304
      @poisonedkilljoy9304 8 місяців тому +12

@@kaelin_cherisethere were a few methods for potential vampires (mortsafes are not one of them). this included - jamming something like a brick in the open mouth, burying the person face down, covering the corpse in sharp things, literally staking the corpse into the coffin and more.
the things that could make you a potential vampire (not always referred to as vampires, which can be spelt vampyres sometimes, but all what we would GENERALLY understand as a vampire today) include: being a redhead, not being baptised, dying a violent death (inc. suicide and execution), being fed on by a vampire in your life, generally not being liked AND MORE!
in order to detect a potential vampire, they would dig up the corpse and look for fresh blood in the heart or other major organs, and see if the corpse looked weirdly fresh (like having liquid blood, which can be caused by some diseases, like fucking RABIES). if the corpse was determined to be a vampire, they’d burn the heart (or other major organ if heart is missing) and feed the ashes to whoever was dying of consumption (since consumption = being fed on by a vampire in some communities)
also a lot of the vampires in new england were “found” in winter. but the thing is, if the ground is so frozen you can’t dig a grave, it’s probably too cold for decomposition to happen, since the bacteria that decompose a body can’t reproduce below a certain temperature (about freezing is the temperature you want to preserve a body). but if you don’t know how the mechanics of decomposition work, and you see a 3 month old body that looks like it died yesterday, or last week, you’re going to be weirded out by that
basically a lot of the vampire myth comes down to wild misunderstandings of disease and death, fears of disease and death, and a heavy dose of folklore (which is also full of antisemitism. genuinely. there is a lot of antisemitism in vampire folklore. also sexism and fear of redheads. and hatred of the mentally ill).

2:00 that is very similar to a creature in the movie "Annihilation"
So basically [spoilers] there's a mutated bear amalgamation that at one point drags a character into the darkenss of the night (so we assume they're dead but don't know for sure). Then in a later scene screams of that character are heard and one of the still alive character rushes towars the sound, but it turns out that it's the bear thing mimicking the screams of its victim (and it kills some more characters before itself getting killed).

I don't like heights do to an experience where I ended up hanging by my fingertips as a kid in a house while playing hide and seek (open loft area). I am actually more comfortable now with something like a wall where I can hold onto something than a ski lift or floating in water. I think it is due to the fact that I caught something during my childhood experience, so my brain thinks that things are more likely to be fine as long as there is something to hold on to or be able to grab a hold of if I slip. I am really only mildly tolerant of planes (takeoffs and landings are the worst) due to flying every summer when I was younger to visit family. Even then I still don't like turbulence and feel better if I can hold onto the arms of the chair. Something like space or microgravity would absolutely horrify me due to floating in nothing. It's funny, because I think I wouldn't have minded heights except for that experience, since I climbed trees a lot as a kid.
