  • In his weekly clinical update, Dr. Griffin discusses Merck’s RSV preventative monoclonal antibody Clesrovimab before reviewing the recent statistics on SARS-CoV-2 infection, if previous SARS-COV-2 infections predict the outcome of subsequent infections, if using COVID rapid diagnostic tests is cost effective, if the protein based vaccine NVX-CoV2327 elicits a durable immune response, if combination treatment of vaccine and antiviral drugs effectively protect against hospitalization, where to find PEMGARDA, what do when healthcare workers succumb to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and how COVID-19 may alter the cognitive trajectories of older patients.

      Thank you, gents! I look forward to this every week.
      I'm thinking some contributors to the summer increase in covid cases could be:
      - the prior fall's vaccination has waned (or the protection one gets from a winter infection has waned) by late July/August.
      - Folks move indoors to be in the air conditioning
      - Vacation travel (planes/cruises)
      - It's summer music festival season featuring audiences crammed together cheering/singing. Even if the shows are outside, people are still packed shoulder to shoulder;
      - Anecdotally, I know of several folks who got sick after attending one of Taylor Swift's tour dates.
      - Couple all these activities with the new highly-transmissie FLiRT/FLuQE variants that seem to be good at evading prior immunity, and you've got a recipe for a summer wave.
      (I'm just spitballing here.)
      Anyway, Dr. Griffin, I hope your race was fabulous!

      Not preventing reinfections will be a deal breaker with long term health. It's not a cold you can try and treat it the same but, it will be a disappointment all the same. Deaths have been consistent since the beginning.

    Given that COVID 19 has responded to behaviour (lockdowns, working from home, avoiding travel, masking, etc.) more than to seasonality in the past, is this growth rate not simply down to the fact that almost everyone has now abandoned every precaution because most people believe "the pandemic is over" and life should go back to normal?

    People are Traveling without Mask on planes. I believe the plane ride is the issue. There was some studies that short flight is less at risk verse long flights.
    In 2024, US airlines are expected to carry a record 271 million passengers worldwide from June 1 to August 31, which is a 6.3% increase from the previous summer.
    I know airplanes have the air filters but they have gone back to their old practices. 1. They don't run the air conditioning (filters) while people are boarding/deplaning which is the most vulnerable time where people are stressed breathing trying to get situated. 2. The planes are packed with maybe ~ 5% wearing masks. (8/175 passengers). Overall people are trying to return to Normal so they are gathering more often. Co-worker w went to church function (20/100) caught COVID. This is anecdotal but we know length of exposure time can increase your chances of getting COVID. Events and plane trips lock people near them for extended periods of time.

    • @cIvy726

      Yes, people are no longer masking on planes, on public transport, in movie theatres... etc..

    • @kathrynlove8252
      @kathrynlove8252 Місяць тому +1

      The plane ride is the same as any situation where you are in enclosed spaces with spreaders. In fact ventilation on the plane is better than in many other situations but it can’t overcome the risk if you’re sitting in proximity with sneezing, coughing Inconsiderates or next to someone who is incubating infection and talking etc. Treat all of these situations like defensive driving. Wear an N95 or equivalent from the moment you start to line up or sooner.

      I would suspect so, especially if the AC systems are not serviced regularly by a competent person and installed correctly. HEPA filters can help to reduce viral load, sadly good indoor air quality doesn't seem to be a priority in many settings.

    There is no real reason for covid to be seasonal or go away. Reasons for this are numerous. First of all, it's incredibly infectious, possibly one of the 1 or 2 most infectious diseases of all time. So it has absolutely no problem spreading in the summer, as any air sharing is enough. Secondly, it replicates very quickly, so immune memory isn't enough to stop it before symptoms and damage start - only antibodies to the same strain are enough, and those last a few months - much less than a year. If people behave as they did before the pandemic, it is guaranteed that you will get infected 2-3 times per year, every year, until you finally lose the russian roulette of long covid or death.

      Well, yes, it is 100% guaranteed that we will all lose the race against death.
