Not sure if you still see comments to this video so many years later. But if you do please count me as another appreciative viewer of this particular video. Purchased a very nice Ft-101E recently and everytime I transmitted every report I got was that I was off frequency. Following this video the radio is spot on! And I am far from a "tech guy". Thank you!!!
This UA-cam series of videos has been a BIG TIME help to me realigning and trouble shooting my FT-101EX.
What a valuable Set of videos for ft-101 owners, absolute treasure! Keep ‘em coming good sir!
TNX I bought an EE. I thought that aligning the TX/RX was over my head. You just saved me a boat load of money because I was going to send it to someone to have it aligned. Its frigging easy. Best73's Rich
Thanks for sharing how to align the TX and RX frequencies. I have had my clarifier circuit on for 6 months now on my new old FT-101EE. I had to have it on to compensate for the difference that I have between the two and I have been very careful to not touch the settings for 6 months because they would be off again. I'm fixing this tonight thanks to you. Thanks a million for sharing your knowledge and know how. I'll let you know how this comes out!
It must be so fun for you to do these repairs. I have never done a repair but it’s fun for me just to watch you do it.
Splendid fix. I own the same radio since about 1974. It wasn't new when I purchased it. This was a basket case radio. It was repaired and modified as to where I couldn't use it. It would interfere with the neighbors TV set. my antenna came down during sandy storm and can't even listen to it. So it's a nice looking show piece. I hope your respires / improvements on the Pond-Dee comes out the way the Mrs. likes it. Good luck, looking forward to the next video..... Angelo
Thanks Angelo, that sounds like a nice rig to get a full make over. Wife is happier each day.
Thank you for this great video. I just aligned my TX&RX on my 101-EE using your procedure. If you cant find someone talking to check the clarifier, just use the 25KHz tone. You just saved me a lot of money on shipping and tech work. God Bless and 73 de KJ2AM THANKS AGAIN!!
Thanks Tony. Very glad you found this useful. You are correct on the calibrator tone. It makes for a great signal generator. Blessings my friend.
Hello there. Thanks for the very easy to understand and informative video.
I just finished setting up two Ft101e’s following your instructions. Now when I check into e-cars
I don’t sound like a chipmunk. Thanks and 73. Jim Va3jt.
Great to hear! Thanks
It's pretty amazing to see that the old 101 series is still around and giving a good account for itself after 40 plus years, I wonder if any of the kilo buck transceivers of today will be around in 40 years. Being that they are all loaded with custom one off parts, I tend to doubt it. No need to apologize for not having a lot of time Buddy. Those of us who have been married a long time know that when it comes to the XYL's kitchen getting fixed or some old radios getting fixed, the choice is pretty much clear. 73 Doug.
Thanks for the comment Doug. I agree. These new rigs will never last that long. Too much complex circuits to fail. The old 101's will last as long as there is still a few parts around.
Hi Buddy
Another outstanding video and love seeing these old units back working as they should. I hope you are doing well. Glad to stop by and see how you are doing.
Mel
So good to see you Mel. Doing great here. Just so busy with work and house repairs. Never a dull day lol. Hope you are fine. Emailed you a week ago but did not see a response. Take care my friend.
Good to see you on again Buddy. As usual, this is a really good video. I had an FT-101EE back in the mid 70's and loved that radio. The difference between the E model and the EE model is that the EE model did NOT have the built-in speech processor. Well, I didn't need one because I had an audio derived speech processor that worked great LOL. Anyway, thank you for keeping the 101 series alive and kicking. Hope your house repairs etc go very well for you. 73 DE K7RMJ Frank
Thanks Frank. House is half way done. Between the public job and house repairs not much time left. Good point on the speech processor.
When introduced this was state of the art. It can still do a good job. I recommend rigs like this to beginners as you can also maintain it yourself. Available via eBay at a sensible price as well.
Just the video I need to repair my FT-101E Receive and transmit are on the same frequency now. I will wait till you get those 2 output tubes in and do the alignment before I try it on mine. Love those old radios and use mine just about every day. Thanks Buddy for the great informational videos.
Very simple process on these rigs. Why I like them so much. Tubes should be in soon. Thanks for watching Lyle.
Woo Hoo ! The FT101 series is back :-) I hope to get started on my FT101 EE soon. Thanks for sharing your great knowledge!
Thanks for watching Robert. Been wanting to get back on this for a while.
could you help me with a little contribution apoia.se/radiotransceiver
You saved me quite the headache today!
Great info. I have run into the mismatched tubes myself. It can cause all kinds of weird oscillation problems.
You do realize you have a really nice frequency counter already. In fact you were using it in this video, your spectrum analyzer. Just hook up a 10X scope probe to the SA, set the center frequency to the exact frequency you want to align to and set the span to 2 or 3 kHz. You can also hit the peak button and then the soft key for continous peak. Now you can see the frequency in numbers and the actual signal. It actually makes frequency adjustments easier. It becomes more like peaking a IF stage with a analog meter. No waiting for a digital display to stabilize.
And even more accurate with a 10MHz GPSDO or Rb standard! 'Course on a Viking on AM what's a couple of kHz one way or the other among friends? ;-)
Dino Papas
Yep, everything runs off a HP GPS oscillator here. As new as his SA is its still in calibration so he should be dead on for a while. And yeah, what's a few kc between friends. Nothing like chasing each other across the band with a nice old drifty tube rig. :-)
Good point about the SA as a frequency counter. I use it quite often for that myself. Those mismatched tubes cause all kinds of issues.
Thats right! Also my newer IFR was recently calibrated. Shes dead on :)
Wow Thanks for this video Now i can make the adjustment for my own FT101BS to get the receive and transmit frequenty the same, thanks very much
Glad it helped
I have two FT-101's, an “E” picked up on Ebay that is in good shape and my “B” model I’ve had since the mid 70's. So far I have replaced the electrolytic and mylar caps in the E model, checked the Rx/Tx alignment voltages (exactly 4.000 on all three), and have done a general cleanup & inspection. I don’t see anything bad. Next step is relay cleaning and going through the receiver fully. Both have the ZL2BAF modification for strong signal overload. My "B" model has all three filters. I am really looking forward to your video on the receiver circuits. I was wise enough to pick up two pairs of PA tubes some time ago, one NEC the other Raytheon, so I should be in good shape for a long time. *** Really good video's, Buddy *** I look forward to each one and go back and look at the previous ones often, too. 73's and keep up the good work. ZACK KC5IS
Sounds like you are moving in the right direction with those Pete. Thanks for sharing, love hearing repair stories.
Yes glad to have you back, thanks.
Thank you Geof

Good luck on the projects, Buddy. You gotta take care of business and keep priorities straight. Enjoyed this one...
Thanks James
Sir, I would like to thank you very much for all the help and information I have gleanedfrom your videos. I have a 101EX and it was not working. I took it to a shop andthey could not. I followed your steps and I have it running. I spoke to a station in Kansas and he told me I was off frequency a bit. I am going to use this video to align my transceiver.God Bless you.Ron VA3JRJ/W3
Ron, I like to thank you for watching. Always good to hear how this helps folks. Thank you.
Master Craftsman and a pleasure to watch.
I like the extender board you made, was hoping to see how you made it, but it looks easy enough. I have a couple of these 101s. Thank you for all your input to us. it's very interesting.
Hoping to see some more work on that old 101 if you can manage it. Cheers from the UK.
They are very straight forward to make. Just get the spacing, cover and etch. Thanks
So you made these extender cards??? Wow. I really need some of those. I have a FT-101EE and I LOVE it but it def needs some adjustments and I want to do as much as I can myself. I'm interested did you buy blank cards somewhere and etch them? Are the sockets/plugs standard or something? Do you start with a fully copper clad card and then put in some acid or etching compound? Man i really don't know anything about making those but I want to do it and I need some!
Well buddy... As always we enjoyed the video. We understand the situation at the shop ..busy and all. Don't feel bad that your not able to process work fast enough. You may need to clone yourself.
Thanks Pierre. Times are so tough at the moment. Should be better soon. I need to make several clones of myself :-)
Thanks so much for posting the tx rx alignment procedure i just did it and the radio is working fine. Btw i love your videos and your channel 73 de ve2ota
Always great to hear when a plan work outs. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I really enjoy your video's. While you are checking the voltage with the clarifier on and off you might as well check it putting the radio in mox with the heaters off. Then match it to the other two voltages with the "zero" potentiometer on the regulator board. Your videos have really helped me a lot with my ft 101's. Hope one day you might make a video of the alignment of the radio. Thanks Buddy!
Totally interested in the 6146B tubes modification. Blessings my friend.
Hi, thank you for your quality videos.
I have an FT-101B and tried doing this but my initial voltage reading is nowhere near the 3.4 85V your meter shows. Mine shows 0.267V with CLARIFIER 'on' and set to 0 and 0.202V with CLARIFIER 'off'. Adjusting the variable resistor (VR-4) doesn't have any effect. What could be going on here?
Hi Buddy, Great video. I really enjoyed this one, good info. 73
Thank you Larry
I don't understand adjusting with the clarifier on and off. If you set the clarifier knob straight up on zero then adjust VR2 to where the voltage is the same you can breathe on the knob and the voltage will be different. I understand adjusting with mox on and off. Thanks for the videos! You really help a lot. I can read it in a book but it's better to see it done. Thanks again!

Hay Buddy Back in from the Honey Due Shop !! None thing like keeping the Little Gal Happy ah ? lol lol You will notice some extra helping on the plate at supper time lol Yep enjoy the video, and great on the counter have to keep my eye open for the Video on that maybe get lucky ..So wont hold you , think hear gal yelling !! lol lol GodBless Buddy
Honey dues never end my friend. Thanks for stopping in.
Good to see you again Buddy !! Looks like you have some interesting projects coming down the pike !! can't wait to see them !!!John A Bellas ---- KC2UVN
Thanks John. Always something to do here at the radio shop.
Can't wait to see how you do the final adjustments on this radio, that being the neutralization step, good pointer on the receive/trans alignment, I have to do that on my Yeasu FT 101E. John Bellas KC2UVN
What contact cleaner did you use on the mode switch ? I'm having the same issue.
Missed ya Buddy! Take care!
Thank you Barry
I do not have a sig gen, so can I use the 25Kcs or 100Kcs marker as the signal source for adjusting the S meter. Also, my 101 is the late edition and the noise blanker board is not located where yours is in this video.
Yes, that is all you really need to service these rigs. Just use the marker gen as it is connected to the antenna port.
Hello and merry Christmas. I was told you have a video of doing an AM filter modification on the Yaesu FT-101 but I can't seem to find it on your channel anywhere, am I looking in the wrong place? Please inform. Many thanks and have a great holiday season, God bless.
I haven't turned on my ft101 in a good while. I changed out some caps when one of my finals failed. I replaced both finals with a matched set but never powered the FT101 back up. When you do a video on neutralizing finials I'm thinking that just might push me to the point to power the radio back up. I have always be afraid of damaging my new tubes and I figured if I never turned it on they would last a life time. Thanks for the videos
There is a way to do a no-HV neutralization. Fox Tango site illustrates it and its pretty easy to do.
I think this is the link your talking about.
www.foxtango.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1579&p=3764&hilit=neutralization#p3764
Thanks. Yes I will be doing the final tune up in this rig in the future. Will show all that. And look at the link provided below.
Thanks for helping us! I have a question. Did you measure voltage on same green wire during"zero" setting and for clarifire setting?
I have an FT-101 (not B model) that I am fixing for a fellow ham here. I replaced the transformer and removed the AM mod that the previous owner had put in for CB use. Everything works OK now on USB but the LSB is 1.5KHz high, above dial frequency, and I can't get it to come in. I did find a gray wire that has been cut at both ends. One end is close to the mode switch and the other end appears to have come off the voltage regulator board connector somewhere between pins 10 - 13. I have traced till I am blue in the face but can't figure out where that wire goes. Any help you could offer would be much appreciated. Thanks. Dave W8DKM
Hi, i ma restoring my Ft-101E i have replaced and neutralized the final tubes, Now i am working on clarifier... i have two problems:
vr4 which Is supposed to be used for Y centering the clarifier does not work , no effect on clarifier frequency .
The second problem is that zero regulation to center rx with tx has not enought course to set rx frequency equal to tx. Can you give me some advice?
Welcome Back :)
Thanks Sue.

Thanks Buddy,
Regards Carl.
Thank you Carl
Awesome video !! I have a Drake TR-4C. Do i need 3 matched tubes or get tubes that are all the same as in 3 Sylvania tubes and not worry if they are matched. Just make sure they are the same brand and look the same ?
Yes always make sure they are the same build type, brand does not matter. Some tubes are just re-badge, And if they all read the same on a tester that does help. Thanks
enjoyed the vid thx for posting
Thanks
Hi Buddy-good to see you are ok
Can I ask you-do you know if there is a conversion to fit 6146's to a ft200?
Thanks
Thanks. I have never heard of anyone converting one of those to 6146 before.
I have a FT-101-E and have trouble with the VFO knob slowly moving if the little ( I don't know what to call it?) fine tune knob is not at the 6 o clock position (bottom). Is there a tension adjuster in the VFO to tighten it up a little? Thanks
I am not sure what you are meaning. Send me an email and perhaps we can help work through this.
I got it figured out. I ended up putting a peace of felt between the black knob and the plate that holds the number plate on, kind of like the felts are to snug the number plate. I looked all over for your e mail address and have not found it yet. I have some other questions. I would like to ask and would more then happy to pay you for some answers if you could help me out. Merry Christmas,
Steve
Mine does not want to line up with the transmitter variable resistor. It does not have the limit.
What can I do?
Buddy help! On my 101ee when I reach maximum recieve on 10 meters the preselect is on 15 meters. What causes this? Thanks for the videos. I really enjoy them. 73's from KN4DBP.
It is really hard to say with out a lot more information. Does it do this just on 10 meters or are all band effected? Did you get the rig in this condition or did it start acting up later on? Almost sounds like it has be improperly aligned.
The Radio Shop. I purchased the radio used. It is the cleanest rig like this I have ever seen. It looks like it just came out of the box. Something happened when I flipped the mox switch. The band was on 10 meter. Preselect on 10
But the plate was on 80. Don't know if it's a coincidence or not. Power output is low on 10 A. About 40 watts .Then gets progressively higher with just over 100 watts on 10 D. 20 to 30 watts on 40 and 80 meter.

I found a Nice Ft-101B w/original Handmic Recently in an Estate Sale...Give away price ...Needed Alignment but that was so simple a 5 yr old could do it.A.C. Plug Missing but fixed that Cleaned the controls and switches too. Thought relay was dirty but after tapping around on the regulator board seems to effect it so bad solder joint or pots need changed any suggesstions? Found the bad boy RL-2 Antenna relay after all... easy switch out for another one....Thanks for the Video!!! 73's DE Claude NØFMO
Great video! Did you buy or make your extender cards?
Thanks Sam, I made mine.
could you please give us details about how you have your service monitor set up? thanks
Will try and cover that in the next video.
i wonder why the front switch was left on I.C insted of PO ??
glad to have another 101 video i've added it to my playlist for future reference
I left it in that position when checking a few things when the owner brought it in. Told him it needs a bit of work and would have to leave it. Thanks Scott.
What can I do to enter the contest. What little test equipment I have I have made from kits from ebay and banggood. Glad to see the video and know your ok. Thanks for the videos !
All you have to do to enter any of my give a ways is just reply to the video. Thanks for watching.
if they are not Japanese tubes, the neutralizer cap will need to be changed.
tubes must be plate current matched. NEC marked them I think to match like "450" etc.
6146s are lower output and suffer harmonic oscillation in the 101, its not recommended.
I have never liked the idea about converting to 6146 tubes. I know two folks that have tried and failed. I like to try myself just to see what it does and perhaps learn the mistakes of others.
Interesting thing there, i have a resistor just before green wires on that terminal on my ft-101🤔
Voltages are fine though, tiny difference.
Do you think you will be going back to the Fluke in #51?
As soon as time allows. Winter coming so things should slow down a bit.
Buddy:
I check out all you movies and down load the ones I'm really interested in for future use. I know that there is a lot of movies on you tube about restuffing electrolytic capacitors. And I've checked out some however there not all that good. I know that your a busy man and this mite be low on your list, But I'd really like to see how you do it.
Thanks
Paul
Thanks Paul and glad you like the videos. I will try and sneak in a full detail on how to do this in the future.
need more ..... ty
Thanks
The Radio Shop my FT101E transmit on a.m. and side band but on a.m. does not swing
Greetings my friend from the Dominican Republic, I'm Marcos Lopez, I have this radio FT101E and I want to know if you speak Spanish, since I do not understand English well, and I need help on the steps to stabilize Reception and Transmission of radio vi His video but I do not know what the voltage should be if I could explain it in Spanish I would appreciate it. Thanks a thousand
Let me see what I can do
Nice video
I did the 6146 mod the tubes imployed shrunk i was in tears what did i do wrong kg6mn
I just required a ft 101 Series E Yaesu I cannot find mylar capacitors metal clad okay no mylars please help God bless
Not metal clad electrolytics I can find I just cannot find this for my audio board and the other boards they're just coming to park so I need to replace them even if there's a kit out there that you might get rid of I would love to receive thank
I will see where I purchased the last ones I got.
I also need to replace the Mylar capacitors on the audio board and a few on some of the other boards.Where can I find these Mylar capacitors for my FT-101EE ?Thanks.texsas_1@yahoo.com
Presumably the clarifer knob must be set to its upright (zero) position?
Yes...at the 12 o'clock position.
Hello again. How can I show my appreciation for all the help I have received here?Once again, I followed your instructions and aligned my transmit to the receive freq.I spoke to Woodstock, Ontario, Canada on 80 meters, and was dead on.Thanks again.VA3JRJ/W3
Hi my friend. Although I do not ask for donation or gifts many others like to do so. So under the "showmore" tab of every video is a link to my website. I have always felt that like and subscribe and comments make me happy, This link describes how to send PayPal, donate via Patreon, or address to send gifts. I will post the link under this comment and thanks.

I have a ft 101 was my friends he has passed he gave two me wha two du with it help please
Nice interesting video, 73 Barry G4DIP
I changed mine to output tubes to 8950'S when you could get them!
Hey My Friend, you speak spanish?
Sorry I do not. I do use google translate for some
The noise blanker board adjustment did nothing.
This is all very awesome! BUT....too bad there is NO ONE who can show you what to do when the receive sensitivity is extremely weak after a precise alignment and a replacement of the receive amplifier transistor. Apparently there is NO ONE left who really knows everything about these old radios. I just tossed mine in the trash. They're just not repairable anymore. There's certain things that no one alive can do on these radios anymore. Too bad. They WERE beautiful, but now... basically junk.
sounds like someone screwdrivered the osc trimmers
Think someone screwdrivered everything in this radio.
could you help me with a little contribution apoia.se/radiotransceiver
my 6146 mod did not work lots of luck kg6mn
I hear this quite often. Unstable? or no output?
Heres where I found my info.
Make sure 6 volts is set first
w3jxq.snycomp.com/ft101/clarifier.html
Yep, I omitted the 6 volt setting in this video. Had that linked booked mark for quite some time. Thanks
about the only decent line of radios yaesu made, ive had a few, most have been total underbuilt shit.
A Schematic would be helpful to know what your adjusting... Also having your hands between the meter reading and the camera is unbearable. OMG
6146B's far better,even with bugs
