Oh man I wish I'd never sold my old FT101E it was a lovely radio, the first TX that I bought (secondhand) back in 1988. I hope it's still going strong and giving someone as much pleasure as it did to me. Thanks for the video and walk down memory lane. 73 . . . Andy GWØJXM
WOW!! the old 101, it was one of my first hf rigs way back when. I have been off the are for 30+ years and found things have changed. Started up again last year with the Yaesu FT-1200 and FT-400 great startup units.
Well the video is old now - I doupt it a bit. When I had a F-101 E about 46 years ago I was teached to switch to put in 25/100KHz and TUNE and then making the tone heard against ZERO Hz.......In your Video there is still a tone in Tune position where you state this was the frequency right now?! Am I wrong after al these years? Kind regards Michael
I did some research before making that video. I thought that the procedure was correct at the time but after several critical comments, I'm not so sure. It seems to have helped more people than not and that is why I keep the video up. I don't own or use boat anchors anymore so I really can't confirm or deny the information. Sorry.
@@raybecker3601 Great Thanks Ray for the immediate response. I still have mine (FT 101 E) from when I was 14 yrs (now 60) but was not on air the last 40 yrs - so I guess I'll plug it in again and will see... The Handbook simply says to "zero beat the 100kHz" - so in may thinking there would be no more tone in LSB/USB. Hope to contact you than on SW :-)
Thanks Renaissance man! I can't believe I finally have an FT-101 on the way. I've dreamed about it for years. I have a frequency counter and an o-scope but would like to do this first. I'm so excited. Checking out your other video(s) I see there's a tuneup vid. Oh boy o boy o boy o boy W4VEY
Well, at least he got the part about WWV transmitting out of Boulder, Colorado right... ;) Isn't the "25 KHz/OFF/100KHz switch used to put a marker tone at those intervals, then the MODE is set for TUNE or CW, and then you find WWV, and zero beat the WWV tone with the marker tone? It's been awhile since I've messed with one of those, but I believe that's how it's done. Then return the marker switch to OFF for normal operation.
Hi there i have a ft 101B and fldx 2000 amp but i do not know how to connect the 2 together .I would be very great full if you can share any info on this.Thank you .P.S i learn a lot from watching your videos.
I'd guess that since it's been 4 years since you posted this video that you now know this information is Completely WRONG? You should do the right thing & either remove the video or post it as the WRONG way to Zero Beat a Yaesu FT-101.All this method will do is get the dial out of alignment.
My 101E should be here in a couple weeks. Waiting on an AM filter and install and shipping. I have a Kenwood TS 430 and this is easier to do, no covers to take off. My question is, how long will it stay in tune on any given crystal before it drifts off again and you have to do this over again? Thanks for the tutorials. I subscribed.
If you have not done so already, buy yourself the Yaesu YC-601 or YC-601B & you can then watch the frequency drift & then correct it as needed.Make sure you properly calibrate the YC-601 or 601B & you will be set.Good rigs but far from great in my opinion & I have the FT-101B & FT-101EX just for goofing off & not serious DX.No WARC Bands is a Big Negative for me since I am a big fan of 17 meters which only one FT-101 will do & that's the last one built without a mod that requires a toggle switch be installed as well so I'll leave mine as they are.
Greetings. Hello friend, I am Marcos Lopez I have that radio the FT101E, and I would like to know how it is to zero beat, I do not know English, and I need to please that explanation that you put in the video to see if you can put it or translate it into Spanish , I see that it activates the LSB and USB button repeatedly, and it is moving the VFO, I do not know if that is done until in both LSB and USB modes the change is heard Same. From 73s already a hug
Yeah....this in not how you zero beat that radio. I'm sorry but this is bad information. Zero beat refers to beating two frequencies together to achieve zero hertz, not a comparison of USB/LSB.
Picking up an FT-101B Tomorrow (6/17/17) so thanks for a few pointers but Zero Beat info is WRONG.I have never owned or used an FT-101 series transceiver but I have heard a lot of them on the air & lots of tales about them.I am NOT usually a fan of Yaesu transceivers but just maybe an Early Edition may be more to my liking? I would NOT own any transceiver they have built in the last 15 years. They all pretty much SUCK in my opinion. {:>) UPDATE: My FT-101B is an Early model 101B but has all of the bands installed except 160 meters where I doubt I'd ever use it but I may buy the crystal & plug it in anyways since it's less that $20 shipped.Just wired my Black Special Amplified Astatic D-104 for it tonight.Much better than anything Yaesu currently offers on the market.
They are great radios for power and audio. With that said, an FT-100, FT-450 and FT-856D are WAY more capable and much easier to operate. Sounds like you're either a diehard Icom or Kenwood guy. That's cool. All three make great radio's. It just comes down to personal choice. The 101, when it is properly setup is a great talking boat anchor. With the right tubes, she will do 200 watts easy. Good luck with your 101.
The modern Yaesu rigs are a Pathetic Excuse for an Amateur Radio. In the CB world they would be bottom of the barrel. The last three Yaesu rigs I have owned have been beyond worthless & those were the 857D,2500,& 2800.My 1st HF rig in 1994 was Yaesu FT-990 AC/DC & it was a great rig as was the FT-1500 2 meter mobile.I am now a Die Hard ICOM fan with all of the modern rigs & I'll take my ICOM 7600 over anything that Yaesu has EVER produced no matter the model of the cost.I would NOT own a new Yaesu if it was FREE no matter the model number.I am finished wasting my hard earned retirement income of their pathetic excuse at an Amateur Radio forever & more. YAESU = Yet Another Excuse Simply Useless
thanks for the info, I plan on getting one sooner or later, I should have a house in the country by jan 2015. check out my youtube I have military phones, switchboard, and a gra-39 phone/radio interface.
it D-star and internet now mate, Ham Radio joined forces with the web to wipe out direct line communication. solar panel and one 12v deep cycle battery. these radios had the dc power supply option and it is not necessary to run full 200 watts. my radio has the dc cord. easy stuff in grid down
Sorry, just messing with you, in a nuclear attack your antenna would probably get bent. Good to see old radios still being used, I've still got a few older vhf handsets in the garage somewhere, I gave up a long time ago
What a load of crap. All he has done is set the tuning dial to the mid point between the 2 BFO xtal oscillators. 0 on the tuning dial should be set using the built in 25 or 100kHz cal function and adjust to 0hz tone on the desired mode. Zero beat means a zero Hz freq heterodyne frequency. D'oh.

Jeff...your comment makes up for all of the trolls. I'm so glad that my video helped out! Keep me posted
Trolls who know that is NOT the proper way to Zero Beat an FT-101 of any model.
Nope. The marker tones will not change relative to the beacon. But that is a nice way to check your marker crystals.
Hi, wattmeter is connected between the antenna and the transmatch?
Very interesting video!
Thank You.
Thanks! I was wondering how to zero the back dial. Great! 73
Thanks for that, very useful.
Thanks for that~
FT101EE here and I appreciate the lesson.

Super nice video

GOOD stuff!
I had a B once and like a fool, sold it.. I actually liked it better than the 101E. No frills old radio, no processor, but i never use one anyways....
not really. I was just wondering if there was a certain band areas or a specific net or something like that
How do I fix the age of my 101B
One bottle of Viagra per month should just about do it.
wanna talk about a major AHA moment! yeah...I was like "Duh"...that's how to do it! LOL
what are you waiting for? LOL Go for it! Be like your brother
