Autobot Spike | Transformers Generation 1 | Season 2 | E01 | Hasbro Pulse
A Decepticon attack leaves Spike wounded. To save his son's life, Sparkplug helps the Autobots transfer Spike's mind to the body of an experimental robot called Autobot X while the doctors at the hospital work on repairing Spike's real body. The experiment works like a charm and Spike's mind is in Autobot X, temporarily becoming Autobot Spike. Unfortunately, the procedure has a side effect, making the state of Spike's mind to become questionable.

It's like on the one hand, this whole idea of Frankenstein-esque Autobot parts is very disturbing to him, but on the other, he sees the value of the project for saving lives. After all, Wheeljack is the mad scientist here, and is said to injure himself with his own experiments.

Season 2’s intro is certainly one of the best Transformers cartoon intros. Very well-animated and action-packed.

Kinda funny that they needed to do the brain transfer for surgery. You’d think putting Spike under with anesthetic would work for that.

Did they have anesthetic in the 80s? Or was it just a lot of morphine used?
@@arbetor12They have had a general anesthesia since towards the tail end of World War 2. Yes, the drugs used to induce a state of unconsciousness have changed a lot since they were originally used, and can be fine tuned now to a very fine extent. In fact, it is anesthesiologists job to keep you alive during surgery and I have to thank several doctors for helping to save me!

I gotta admit, Autobot Spike after the battle when he kneeled down and apologized to his dad and the Autobots gave him a nice noble edge. It felt like he was an actual Autobot fighting to protect the world from the Decepticons as opposed to being a mere Human ally.

So we find out Megatron likes Spike better as a psychotic Frankenstein robot than a pleasantly looking human
Well, he never held anything personal against Spike, he just saw him as just another being to be conquered, though notable for being the Autonot’s friend. The Robot body and confused mind just gave him an opportunity to add another recruit, one who could’ve filled info on the Autobots, if he could manage to have enough stability to talk, while still holding control of him.
This episode inspired an early version of one of my OCs. A disabled human who was ahead of his time created a cybertronian body and transferred his mind and memories into it and became the Transformer Railbuster. He then attacked Starscream and the Seekers before meeting up with the Autobots. Also, his vehicle mode is a train like Astrotrain, a 4-6-4T Steam Locomotive based off of CN #47 from Steamtown.
megatron retreats at the drop of a hat, basically as soon as the fight isn't any fun anymore lol
One of the few TF G1 episodes that had just the right amount of heart-warming moments.
There was an episode in season 3 involving the Cobra Commander. :D
I think this show has the heaft warming moments just right. It knows how to make it sweet without drama about somebody getting hurt.
This series has more than this to offer in terms of what you're looking for, dude XD

How the hell were the autobots supposed to know that this is what they were talking about? You didn't get a description of what was on before you turned it on you just pick a channel and enjoy what was on back in the 80s.
@@arbetor12 As for fitting the narrative...fair enough. But plot-wise, Wheeljack was literally right there, watching and listening with him. The minute he started hearing the conversation between Frankenstein and his assistant, and all the things they were saying, he should’ve been smart enough to realize that Spike should *not* be hearing this right now, and he should probably turn the movie off, or try to distract Spike.

This was the first episode of the original Transformers cartoon I had seen after taking an interest in the franchise thanks to the 2007 movie. This takes me back in that summer of 2007 when I dug into the internet for robots in disguise.

Wheeljack is such a complete mad scientist and I love him for it.
And this episode is so wild for having Spike go seriously crazy from turning into a robot. It could have easily been Spike going on haha fun robot adventures but G1 said, "Nah lets give the kid a semi realistic identity crisis instead". (Cause honestly suddenly changing species would probably suck, not to mention being a slapdash one.) Good times. Good times.
I would have thought this, if nothing else, would have convinced Spike not to tag along into battle scenarios ...
Wheeljack's idea of transferring the mind into another body like X would've come in handy on the Transformers movie.
The animation was so good in this episode. I wish all episodes were like this.

This seems like a metaphor on a family member or friend going on a dark path from drugs or mental illness or falling in with a bad crowd and his Real Friends and Family trying to save him, Pretty deep.
I remember Glut saying that of all the episodes he wrote, he was the happiest with how this one came out. I'm quite partial to it myself, despite some weird close-ups every now and then.

It would probably be very confusing. Every part of you is a new you. When you look in the mirror and not recognize yourself. That could be scary.

Now hear me out, refine autobot x into say for example, not a Frankensteinian body, and then you have me hooked
Remember the scenes in Robocop 2 where the prototype cyborgs malfunctioned and became deranged? Yeah, the writers of that movie were influenced by Autobot Spike.
Some of the early season 2 episodes are surprisingly well-animated for G1. The characters are on-model most of the time.
They should redo the whole series again but with bigger budget. Hire japanese animators to update it. Eg soundwave should not be a cassette anymore and megatron should just be a tank not a pistol. Then update the look of the G1 characters in line with Transformers Bumblebee look (which was an "updated G1 look with way more detail").
People who are fans of G1 can then finally get a story that isn't told with episode out of order and that can replace the cartoon as the canon. In this new G1 re-telling, they can combine some of the stuff from the marvel comics into the series. It would sell DVD/Blueray/4KUHD Blurays by the truckload. Give them a huge budget. And release toys based on this new cartoon. What do you think? Call it "Transformers G1 ver 2.0"

@@ganados0 I looked at the toys and they look bad compared to Siege/earthrise/kingdom toys. I mean a TRUE reimagining of the G1 that looks as good as the toys in the Studio series 86 line. Got it? Toy guys want to see this. The Gundam model kits guys always get updated versions of old Univeral Century mecha. That's what I want for G1. Use expensive 3D cg if they wish like Transformers prime. (Prime is still the best big budget TF toon but I want something better since we are now in 2021) Have you seen the animation in Macross Frontier with its CG mecha battles? That's what I want in TF G1 reimagining.

@@conorburke1999 But megatron in that is a nihilistic dude who even lets optimus kill him by telling him to "get over it and just pull the trigger". No thanks I don't accept the depressed version of megatron that won't fight back. I see Megatron as a cunning bond villain that always has a backup plan to escape if he is losing and optimus is bound by knightly code to not kill unless its a last resort (like batman) which creates the excuse for letting him go so the autobots can focus on repairing their buddies and being good medics instead of pursuing the bad guys and placing them into robot prison. Maybe it's not what younger kid like but it made you respect megatron a lot more because he isn't mentally ill and like a pirate character is always thinking of how to steal things to gain power. The new toons I think were influenced by the grumpy megatron from Transformers Animated too much. The power hungry maniac of G1 is the definitive version. A combination of the joker in batman comics with a bit of darth vader. (ie being overpowered and too strong for other villains to kill him) As much as I like the WFC netflix robot designs, I think they went too far into making everyone a brooding Batman gothic style character that is depressed and weary of fighting. This gives the story a feeling of doom when in fact autobots who fight for righteous causes is how they justify their existence. If you make them all generic civilians reacting to death it becomes evangelion. I don't want evangelion. I watch enough japanese mecha shows to want another story preaching to me about war is bad. LOL I come to TF for fun.

I'm surprised at how well Spike can control the body as is. I feel for most, it would be hard to even stand with a heavier body plus the different weight distribution and new functions in the body.
We can control robot movement with left n right hemispheres of the brain.
Also with brain controlled muscle impulses cybernetic limbs can be controlled.

This episode would later on become an important one for historic reasons in the Transformers G1 canon as it would mark the beginning of placing a human mind in a robot which would later on lay down the foundations for the concept that we would all know as the Headmasters, Spike himself would go on to play an even bigger role as he was instrumental in helping to create Fortress Maximus at the end of the show's final episodes.

I always love the irony in how there's a transformer which can conveniently transform into exactly what they need, yet they somehow run into endless issues i.e. optimus prime flying in one scene then rolling down a mountain as a truck in the next 🤣

We ALL waited like 3 years to see them finally throw down. "One shall stand, one shall fall", yo. Also.. "They" have the right to do whatever "they" want with their own characters. Us simply loving the show, does not make it anything other than a glorified toy commercial, and it absolutely worked.
I'm going to really miss hearing the S1 intro song before watching each of these. It's far more iconic.

This feel's like a left over episode from season 1. None of the NEW characters introduced in season 2 are in it.
I only ever watched up to the end of Season 1 of Transformers G1, along with a few Season 2 episodes here and there. So being able to watch the whole thing is a definite enjoyment for me
Spike should have never been allowed to leave the Ark while his mind was in the body of a robot. If he had just remained inside of the Ark, then his consciousness could have been returned to his brain once the surgery was completed.
Starscream: You make such boasts before Megatron, but the Autobots still exist!
