it's not even a film, it's meditation. Remember the feeling when the screen got black, the only thing i wanna do is just turn the film on and watch it again

The beauty of Drive My Car is quiet and subtle. The shots aren't in your face with creative lighting or perfect composition, but you can still feel the aura of the film through the visuals. It really sneaks up on you.

I feel like films can be masterpieces in so many different ways/perspectives (like, Parasite was mostly a masterpiece from the perspective of a filmmaker and I guess The Killer from Netflix was a masterpiece from the perspective of an editor). I really felt like this film was a masterpiece from the perspective of a writer/storyteller, which might be my favorite kind of perspective

Mis respetos a Drive My Car.

I've been waiting for this! Thank you for making this wonderful video. Drive My Car is really something so personal for me and it became my favorite film immediately after watching it. Videos like this make me appreciate the art of the film so much more and even get the urge to rewatch it again (which is so out of my character because I rarely rewatch films). I hope to see more of your videos! Sending love from the Philippines

Watched this film sometime last year. Took me about 3 days to finally finish the film haha. Had to really strap myself in for this one and have patience. Overall it was a great film. It was beautifully shot and something about its subtlety made gave you this sense of calm and optimism.

There must be something special/transfixing about this movie.I can't even sit through most 90 minute flicks, least of all three subtitled hours. That I used to buy Saabs before they became defunct has nothing to do with it.The characters were so relatable and loveable. My aerospace dad got sent to Japan twice. He always returned elated(with sake, yukatas, and adorable temple cat figurines) raving how "the Japanese just do everything better." I've agreed ever since, and that was decades ago.

As Many have theme and variations already said; A Beautiful Masterpiece of a Cinema Film. This (film) and A Ghost Story are Film/Cinema Asmr.
Along with the ecclectic likes of Oldboy, Cold War, A Very Long Engagement, Let the Sunshine In, Never Gonna Snow Again, Broken Circle Breakdown, The Whistlers.. - ...possibly Blue Is the Warmest Color -- one of the Best Foreign Language Cinema Experiences Ever.

    I have two theories:
    1. The man with whom Oto was having an affair (Kôshi Takatsuki) likely killed her because she was about to confess everything to Yūsuke, which would have been detrimental to his future acting career. The film seems to give very subtle hints about this, such as when Kôshi gave Yūsuke a deep bow with an obsessive look after being arrested for assaulting and ultimately killing a man on the street. It was as if he wanted to tell Yūsuke that Yūsuke had finally beaten him at his own game, and as if the murder of that man was a sign that Kôshi was capable of much more than previously thought, and that the murder of the man actually symbolized the murder of Oto.
    2. At the end of the film, we see Tōko, the chauffeur, driving Yūsuke's car alone with a dog in the backseat. Yūsuke's absence doesn’t necessarily mean that he has disappeared and given the car to Tōko, but rather it aims to conceal that Tōko was actually the main character of this film all along. Tōko, like the viewer, was an observer of the entire story and was the central figure in this film. Also, during that scene where Tōko and Yūsuke gave each other a hug in Tōko’s hometown, Yūsuke suddenly seemed much more like a side character to me, because Tōko had to comfort him first instead of the other way around (which was very sad for her because she needs a parent so badly instead of always having to take on the parent role for others). Moreover, the title fits this theory perfectly: “Drive My Car” is meant as a kind of statement by Yūsuke in which he asks her to drive his car, which also points to her being the main character of the movie.
Also, I think that Yūsuke and Tōko moved to South Korea together, but Yūsuke just happens to not be in the car with her during this final scene. I also think that Yūsuke probably bought the dog for Tōko in South Korea because he had seen how happy she gets around dogs, but of course, it’s also possible that she bought the dog herself.
