AVOID The Carnivore Diet If You Have Thyroid Problems

  • There's no question that changing the food that you eat every day can have a huge impact on your thyroid.
For this reason, thyroid patients are always looking for the best diet.
This search for the best diet leads a lot of them to the carnivore diet which promotes itself as one of the best diets available.
But is it true and should you try it if you have thyroid problems?
I'm going to argue no, for 4 main reasons:
    1. Carbohydrates are needed for optimal thyroid function.
Low-carb diets have been associated with low T3 levels and high reverse T3 levels, the same pattern seen in chronic illness.
    2. Decreased carbohydrate intake increases sex hormone binding globulin and decreases the activity of sex hormones.
Low-carb diets like carnivore can increase SHBG which can reduce free testosterone and free estradiol levels. This can then impact your thyroid.
    3. There are better ways to lose weight.
There's nothing magical about the carnivore diet that you can't get with other whole-food diets.
    4. Low-carb diets cause sleep disturbances.
Thyroid patients already have trouble with sleep and going low carb can make this problem even worse.

I was vegan, not eating any animal products. I switched to carnivore. A1C went from 9.9 to 6.8, all this in the first eight weeks. Triglycerides 1475 fell to 419. Lost 20 lbs. Doctors were impressed. And shocked. It may not work for all people but it certainly working for me. 🎉

I have hypothyroidism. I have tried tons of diets throughout my life. I have finally gone ketovore ( far more meat than veg, no fruit.working on to go all carnivore) what I can say is I feel soooooooooo much better. This is the first time in decades I feel better. I have more energy, I had pain in my joints , feet, hands. Pain is gone. My periods are far more predictable , my insulin is now normal, no more bloating and stomach issues. I'm happier . Heart palpitations , gone. Have been doing this for 3 months and have lost 14lbs so far.
    1. We don't need sugar to survive. It's fine to get some from low carb veggies but that's truly all we need.
    2. As our bodies heal, we don't need as much thyroid hormone.
    3. People are drawn to the ketogenic/carnivore diet is because you aren't starving yourself. Not because of rapid weight loss. The weight loss is a byproduct of your new way of eating. People will comply with something where they actually feel satisfied with. It's not because they aren't complying it's because we aren't made to starve.
    4. People generally on this diet previously had sleep issues to begin with. I know I did. It had nothing to do with the diet and this is the first I've heard of anyone saying people had sleep issues due to the diet. Eating sugar doesn't make you sleep better. Scare tactics?
All I can say is, If you want to feel better. Give this a try. If you have an auto immune issue , definitely do carnivore. I know Dr. Ken Berry's wife Niesha put her condition into remission and no longer needs any medication. You can actually search and find another person who reversed their thyroid issue with carnivore. All I know is I followed recommendations like this that Dr. Westin is recommending and is has kept me sick for most of my life. I am finally feeling like a human being. My advice, try it, you won't regret it.

I did carnivore for about 15 months and couldn't sleep more than 2-4 hrs no matter what I did. Hypothyroid people have difficulties with gluconeogenesis and that's why so many gets constant surges of stresshormones bcs the body tries desperately to produce the needed glucose. I had no choice but to reintroduce carbs bcs I literally though I was going to die from the extreme stress. Some seem to do very well though but I've come across SO many that really struggles on carnivore.

In my case, I know I'm hypothy not hyper bc I fit most all the symptoms but I can't/won't go 100 % carnivore and what meat I will eat is only going to be poultry bc I cannot cause so many more large animals to be 'ended. I will switch to (higher quality) poultry-only (maybe fish?) and only for dinner maybe 2 to 3's per week. I already do 3-4 eggs most mornings. I'll cut back on fruit but I use banana's for potassium

It's definitely not a one size fits all for everyone, but sounds like what you describe were some issues that needed to be addressed. Eating a proper human diet is like uncovering layers of issues too, and you have to deal with each one of them as they come. Sometimes we have nutritional issues ( vitamin/mineral) that need addressing because we start off with a nutritional deficit. Or we have issues that were brewing prior to starting and they rear their ugly head. Again, it's not for everyone, but for Dr. Childs to scare people away from it completely is wrong too. Diarrhea can definitely be from unbalanced gut bacteria in the gut. I actually had that issue prior to starting and found when I added in fermented foods for a bit , it corrected that issue completely.

I sleep well at night, I no longer have a monthly migraine to go along with a super heavy menstrual cycle and I now have a average predictable cycle without PMS, insulin is normal, liver is healthier, I have consistent energy levels throughout day, cognitive function has improved, I’ve lost 65 lbs to date, my thyroid no longer hurts and my drive for living has returned.
I do my research and listen to what the good Dr. Child’s and several doctors have to say, I read books, look at the research. I make sure I address any nutritional deficiencies, take vitamin, amino acids, minerals, etc to support my body. I meditate, exercise, and take care of my mindset. It is a holistic approach. I Listen to my body and I keep an opened unbiased mind to all information before I discern what works for me and what doesn’t. So far carnivore has helped the most, to each his/her own.

I have so much to say on this video. I am not 100% carnivore but I make good animal proteins and fat a priority. I also supplement with Dr. Childs supplements because they have been amazing. I check my thyroid panel every three months and it’s perfect every time plus I feel amazing Dr. Paul Saladino is not a good example because he works out quite a bit and also surfs. I would like you to take this video to another level and have an interview with Dr. Anthony Chaffee, he has been carnivore for 23 years and is a neurosurgeon. There is Dr. Philip Ovidia, there is Dr. Shawn Baker. Dr. Shawn Baker-currently has an injury and is going more towards a ketogenic carnivore diet. There is also Dr. Rob Kiltz who is a fertility specialist so you have plenty of people to have an interview on your channel with because one video here is not going to be enough to educate people that follow you. Also, there are regular people with absolutely amazing stories at how the carnivore diet has helped them. Please do a little bit more research and really look into Dr. Anthony Chafee’s work and Dr. Lisa Wiedeman.

I’m on the carnivore diet because if I add in carbohydrates (inflammatory strings of sugars) I get intense neck arthritis pain.
Without the carbs I feel so much better.
Seperate to this I have a long list of undiagnosed hypothyroid symptoms that go back to 2004 when I had EBV. I have had difficulty finding a doctor in New Zealand who understands thyroid function properly.
Recently, listening to heaps of Dr Child’s videos I have become aware that I have a thyroid issue. It’s not just CFS/ME, which has no cure.
I’m between a rock and a hard place. Do I go back to intense neck pain because Dr Childs says that I am harming my thyroid by going carnivore for my debilitating neck pain?
BTW. I had keto insomnia for 2 weeks while my body was adjusting to ketones. Then my sleep went back to the way it was before. I think Dr Childs doesn’t really understand this.
Also, why do we need to eat carbs? Doesn’t our liver synthesise all the carbs our body needs by gluconeogenesis?

Watch Dr. Paul Saladino's videos about why he quit Carnivore. He wrote the book, The Carnivore Code, and now says, I was wrong. After watching his videos, I added back in fruit and raw unfiltered honey to my previous diet of Ketovore for a year. I immediately felt better and had energy again. I had no energy doing Ketovore. I finally feel like I'm getting the right nutrients and electrolytes from real food...fruit, instead of supplementing like most Carnivores do. I'm also losing weight again and I only lost 20 lb during the whole year on Ketovore. Dr. Saladino experienced all the things you just talked about before he added back fruit and honey to his diet. The Carnivore Diet is a great short-term elimination diet, at best, as was said in this video, but not healthy and definitely not sustainable long-term for most people.

About 15 months ago, when I was eating a mostly carnivore diet, my TSH was the closest to normal that it’s been in 23 years (I have sub clinical hyperthyroidism and nodules. I was taking 5 mg methimazole per week at that time, and my endocrinologist was pleased with that. I am a lean mass hyperresponder with my LDL/trigs/HDL combo (and of course, the doctor hyper-focused on the LDL while completely ignoring my other numbers 😏), but my thyroid numbers were near normal, so there were no complaints about that. It was only when I added back some plants to try to decrease my LDL that my TSH absolutely TANKED down to 0.005 that my endocrinologist FREAKED OUT and raised my methimazole frequency (but my LDL had come down, so there’s that…even though it appears it is probably not an issue for a LMHR like myself). So, I am back on carnivore with methimazole. It also seems to be helping with arthritis pain in my thumb joints, and with my scalp psoriasis. Still having issues with eczema, but I think once I get rid of coffee, that will resolve as well.

It seems weird to compare labs from a carnivore to labs of people on other diets. It's very obvious that running on ketones has very different processes then running on carbohydrates and therefore it would be expected that the labs would be different. Our bodies aren't going to waste time making things it doesnt need when in a ketogenic state. Those lab ranges are garbage anyway. What matters is how someone feels after the adaptation period. The carnivore diet is extremely important as an elimination diet and should be encouraged to be used to find food sensitivities. Some people may prefer to stay on the carnivore diet because they feel fantastic and others may prefer to add back foods that don't cause a reaction. Again it should be about how people feel and not about lab ranges that may or may not be optimal.

I have been on keto for over three years and recently tried the carnivore diet. I feel like I am the person you saw as your model for this video. After two months of carnivore my TSH was 15.26. My other thyroid levels were too high as well. My functional medicine doctor put me on natural desiccated thyroid and took me off levothyroxine. I am back on the keto diet. Due to a grain allergy, I stay on keto, however, I have been having more healthy carbs such as other fruits and vegetables not allowed on keto. With the change in diet and the natural desiccated thyroid my TSH was 0.31. I currently have a conversion problem. I have ordered essential t2, t3 conversion booster, and the thyroid glandular and adrenal immune support and will have my levels checked in about 7-8 weeks after I began taking these.
I thought I was helping my body by going carnivore, but unfortunately I made more of a mess to clean up! I am happy to be off of levothyroxine though.

My TSH was sky-high for 15 years as well (hovering between 8-14). NOTHING worked. Diet. Exercise. Blasting it with T3 and T4 *together.* Nothing. You'll never guess what did it for me. Turns out I had a *severe vitamin D deficiency.* Of course iron deficiency and super-high uric acid didn't help either. The lynchpin to all of this (for me) was getting my *single digit* D3 levels under control. You cannot *fathom* the shock I had when I was able to come off 100% of everything I was forced to take, including all anti-hypertensives (prolonged vitamin D deficiency DEEPLY affects heart function) as well as coming *completely* off T3/T4.
For the first time in 15 years, my TSH levels are ~4 (basically crystal perfect). And now another shocker: This "metamorphosis" happened within a period of *4 months.* That's right, the 15 years of hideous damage I was doing to myself from lack of vitamins I didn't even know I needed was *REVERSED* in 4 months. Of course, I'm still struggling with high LDL-C and a not-so-good ApoB, but those were *all* products of hypothyroidism (it jacks your cholesterol by affecting your livers ability to do its job among other things). Guess what? Those are NOW slowly coming down as well. Incredible. Sorry for the ramble, just my personal story. Hopefully it can help someone out there.

I can't speak for anyone else. I did carnivore for a short time because I wasn't able to digest vegetables and I know I had insulin resistance or Type 2 by symptoms and symptoms of high estrogen (not lab tested). But I did do green drinks with Sauerkraut. I did resolve my digestive issues.
I currently eat a portion of meat about the size of my closed fist. A bigger portion if it's fish, healthy fats like grass fed butter, avocado and EVOO. I also eat Farm eggs and bacon. But I have a few cups of salad and or sauteed vegetables with each meal with homemade dressings. I occasionally eat some fruit.....not every day.
Carbs from wheat, grain or rice gives me bloat, gassy and fatigue. I do love Honey 🍯. If it's ok, I'm adding it for Winter!
I have Hashimoto. I have been able to stop the thyroid glandular I was doing. I feel like stress of any kind is the biggest issue for autoimmune conditions so I do anything I can to avoid stress and stressful people!
I try to do meals at the same time with intermittent fasting. My insulin I believe is improving but any stress can throw everything off balance and I feel hungry all the time. I do agree, the key here is balanced whole food and no empty calories. My food prep is simple. Nothing fancy but it seems to work for me.
*I have a spirilizer I got at the grocery store for $20. I can feed a zucchini through it and it makes amazing noodles. I saute in butter and add sauce or just mushrooms and garlic with parmesan cheese and cherry tomatoes. Tastes like wheat pasta!
I'm still dealing with very painful inflammation in both legs That's taken 10 yrs to improve so I haven't been able to walk yet. Just wanted to share what's working for me and am interested in reading comments about what's working for you.

I’m trying to get my head around what you say about carbs and hypothyroidism……..carbs are composed of various sugars ( fact) and sugar is basically bad for you…….said to be inflammatory …..which I would have thought is bad for your thyroid if it is already inflamed. That’s without the problems of insulin resistance……. etc etc etc. honey is sugar too. I am not familiar with the study you mentioned or how it was done……but I am sure there must be many substances/chemicals/ foods that affect T4 to T3 conversion……. SUGAR is bad……!

I appreciate your article on this and that you can defend your position with facts and studies. I did my research and did decide to try Carnivore last year for half a year. It did help me balance my mood, lose weight and clear up my acne and other inflammation; though I did experience sleep disturbances and I had 2 early miscarriages which never happened with our first pregnancy - and I was following more of a Paleo diet and on Levo (rather than Carnivore and Armour). I did notice a rise in my antibodies but as many Carnivore proponents also tout the wonders of iodine, I was probably taking too much iodine. Finally, I did notice my menstrual cycles started to lengthen which was strange.
All that to say is I agree with your assessment and appreciate your evaluation. I'm back on Paleo and still hoping for our second to some day come along - trying to reset with your videos and working with functional doc 🙏

This argument between carb people and low carb people is as heated as evolution vs creation. Apples and oranges in comparison, but similar in how set each side is in their beliefs. I know what I can "feel". I know how bloated and achy I was eating carbs, and how better I feel on carnivore or ketovore diets. I have osteoarthritis pretty bad throughout my body, and though I am in no way pain free even on Carnivore, it's night and day in difference to how I feel when eating carbs. Some of us suffer from metabolic syndrome, and have hypothyroidism, and losing weight is so hard to do anyway, but while eating carbs, it's impossible to do, without feeling like you are starving to death. My gut gnaws at me on carbs when I restrict calories I also graze by habit because of it. My body is a wreck from all the years of the standard American diet, bulging and ruptured discs in my back, hips and knees are wearing out, so I cannot walk for miles or do much exercising, except with light weights and short duration walks. I need a knee replacement. So changing my diet is my best tool. I've eaten every way you can, and this is hands down the best for enjoying life. I don't do strict carnivore, so I do more of a ketovore diet, but, 98% of my food is meat. Outside of that I have some cabbage and keto bread occasionally. I enjoy this way of eating as much as it helps me feel better.

Now, I am on day 55 with Carnivore, and I've lost 11 pounds, and I feel better. I am 99% certain I have Hashimoto’s because I have the majority of symptoms but no labs to confirm; I don't fit in the Western med box. My labs are WNL, but they are on the low side and certainly not optimal.
I'm doing Carnivore for 90 days, and then probably Ketovore, or I may stick with Carnivore 5-6 days a week and have a cheat day or a cheat meal. One thing is for certain, my body will decide because if could make the decision, I wouldn't have to deal with any of this mess.

Also having severe arythmias and chest pain despite tweaking with salt and electrolytes. Thyroid labs worsened significantly. I had 4 carnivore coaches and nothing helped. So even if we on paper should be able to make our own needed glucose, it just doesn't always work. My theory is that we are not supposed to have high testosterone all year round. Fructose is what really raises T and is only naturally available a few months a year. Autumn is when non equatorial long gestation animals rut and mate timing for spring babies having the easiest start. I think humans are still wired this way and so called 'normal' T levels are not actually natural, just a consequence of 24/7/365 fructose ingestion.

Due to oxylate dumping from eating an unhealthy diet for decades I added romaine, sauerkraut and occasionally cauliflower. When I eat plant foods I tend to get bloated so I listen to my body more than doctors. Most of my protein is from local grass fed beef, bison and occasional ground turkey.
