  • Alan Watts (1915-1973) who held both a master's degree in theology and a doctorate of divinity, is best known as an interpreter of Zen Buddhism in particular, and Indian and Chinese philosophy in general. He authored more than 20 excellent books on the philosophy and psychology of religion, and lectured extensively, leaving behind a vast audio archive. With characteristic lucidity and humor Watts unravels the most obscure ontological and epistemological knots with the greatest of ease. - deoxy.org/watts.htm

Alan Watts was relatively unknown while he was alive, and is really gaining popularity mostly due to the internet. We should be thankful that any of his talks are on audio recording for us to hear and stop complaining about the quality of these tapes.

i don't think anyone is complaining about the quality of the tapes... if anything were to be complained about it'd be the raspy breathing that is creeping people out.

LOl riiight! Back then, no one complained about quality, just happy to have a such thing as a recording!

Quiet minds cannot be perplexed or frightened
but go on in fortune or misfortune at their own private pace,
like a clock during a thunderstorm.

I like when he cracks himself up, with dry humor. Yet he is a favorite!

the heavy breath is there to show us what's left to work inside ourselves(?

This is ultimately satisfying for the problem reflection and ideas to be recollected. A brilliant era has gone by; and there's nothing we can do about that. Don't be God; we cannot succeed over it all.

if something is going in the wrong direction it takes power to swivel it back on track
if u want to be a quiet watcher that doesn't interfere with anything and plans to leave a few footprints in the sand so be it. but if u hv a responsible mind to help then siddhi is a gift, if u see it that way.
the world would be in a much worse off place if there weren't any rule changers

Dont judge another vessel for their short comings .. look at what he had to offer.. take the good and grow from it.. judgement keeps u in the close minded state..

He was human. There are no super human people who don't have any vices or issues. That idea is a myth and it has caused untold amounts of harm to people. People want to be like Jesus or the Buddha or whoever else, and they have this idea of them as being "above" humanity in some way. They weren't above humanity in any way, and if people today were to meet them they'd probably be very disappointed in their fallibility.
So yeah, Watts had alcohol issues. Krishnamurti slept with his friends wife. Martin Luther King committed plagiarism in order to attain his doctorate, and he cheated on his wife regularly. Thomas Jefferson wrote "All men are created equal" yet owned slaves.
We're human. We do things that harm others and ourselves. That's part of what it means to be human, and there is no way of freeing ourselves from that in any absolute sense.

what's with the creepy forced breathing person
    it's making me uneasy.
and why the hell does he/she stop once there's no talking going on.

    • @luketimothy
      @luketimothy 8 років тому +1

+fullfist It's not breathing. It is the sound of something brushing against the microphone. Presumably as Alan is moving whilst talking.
