She was 18 & her mama sent her out so that she would have a chance to make it, she also gave the baby away because she ( mom) knew she was dying. She didn’t do it for the money, it was a sacrifice & broke her heart. ❤️
You got the story pretty well this time, but just to clarify on one point Fancy's mother did basically pimp her out but it wasn't to get any money for herself. This was the only way she knew how to get her daughter out of their bad situation. Otherwise when the mother died Fancy might have been left in charge of her sibling or have been forced to marry in order to survive and she just wanted more for Fancy. The song is really about doing a bad thing for a good reason.
Absolutely correct!!! The simple fact that she didn’t hold a grudge against her mom was extremely mature. She loved her mom and knew the situation that led her mom to do that. That’s top level maturity. I love this song and the meaning to it. People like to judge others without taking into consideration the circumstances they were in. Sometimes people aren’t left with many options in life and can only do the best they can with what little they have.
Advice: Country Music is storytelling so...you have to “listen”, you cannot jump to conclusions too soon. Sit back and enjoy the story, then you’ll get it. Example: in the start “was the summer I turned 18”
I think you did really well at understanding the story! People tend to shame the mother in this story but remember the mom said her Paw ran off, she was real sick (dying), and already accepted the fate that the baby was going to starve to death. The mom didn't put her to work to bring back money, but, is releasing her daughter into the world and telling her she only knows one way she is going to survive on her own, as she did not want Fancy to stay home and starve to death and die with Mother and baby. It broker mother's heart to do this but she truly had no other means of helping her, especially in the time mother knew she had left on this earth as he was not long for this world.
"Fancy don't let me down," not as in her selling Fancy to some man, but rather sending her 18-year-old daughter out to those uptown streets to earn her living, in the only way Momma with her limited resources and experience knew, and giving Fancy her best chance by spending her last penny on a seductive dress, before dying of her own illness. Many young women have seen that as their only way out, too, but Fancy's story is that one-in-a-million outcome of survival, overcoming, and thriving, becoming acquainted with kings, congressmen and aristocrats and owning a Georgia mansion and a New York townhouse, and no longer having any financial worries. And per Reba's video, becoming a successful actress and singer. Fancy really lived down the 'white trash' legacy, and lived up to her name. Powerful songwriting by Bobbie Gentry, who also recorded the original, and powerful video and vocal by Reba here!
I think it's best to listen to songs like this with the lyrics pulled up while watching the video so you don't miss things. Like she was 18. And the mother wasn't doing it to get money, she did it so fancy would hopefully have a better life than her momma could give her
The story is about a Mother having to very little choice to provide her daughter with a better life. You got the age wrong. In the beginning of the song she says she got her red dress when she was 18 years old. So mama did NOT turn out any minor. But her mother knew she was dying and if she had of died while Fancy still there and present. Fancy being a legal adult would of had to basically take care of the baby. Which was far too much responsibility thst Fancy was not ready for. Nor could she provide for the child properly. She had nothing. All they had left went into that red dress. And it was Fancys ticket out of a poverty striken life. And Fancys mother wanted a better life for both of her children. And it was best for the baby to be asopted by a family who could provide for it. And Fancy needed a tickwt out of her desperate situation so she did not end up homeless after her mother died. Yes she would have to do some shameful things for maybe a few years until she got onto her own two feet and was able to provide herself with enough income to have a decent career of her own. So I think Fancy finally understood why her Mother sent her away before she died. She loved her daughter. But she was dying and did the only thing she could think of that would provide food and shelter for her daughter and one day be able to provide for herself and get out of that situation and become a lady or respect rather than shame. The thing is as sad as this song is. This kind of thing probably happens more than what we may realize.
I just found your videos & subscribed. I love reaction videos especially to country & yours is very intuitive, you just get it. Happy I found you, keep up the good work.
Just subcribed. Thank you for being open to all music, not just what you grew up with. I grew up on this, I hope I can be as open minded as you, and expand my love of great musical talent. P S Old rock and roller / heavy metal fan that thought I hated country.
Or the Kelly Clarkson version. Kelly was married to Reba's stepson (Reba is divorced from Kelly's ex-husband's father now), and the two adore one another. Women supporting women is always great!
You should check out "Rose in Paradise" It's been done by both Waylon Jennings and Chris Young. A bit of a ghost story but a great story. This song and The Nights The Light Went Out in Georgia were songs that Reba's people were afraid would hurt her career. They are such controversial topics. However, they are two of her biggest hits.
Not exactly hun, her mom did kinda pimp her out but she was 16 and her mom was dying and she couldn't figure another way to help Fancy survive, she thought that her and the baby would both die but she might be able to save Fancy
I never stopped to listen to the story, when it was what every one around me was enjoying. Had to dislike it to rebel. If I could turn back time, right?
Ya understood.....you even talk about not understanding some people desperation before she get to the line talking about the people who criticizes her momma.
Yeah i definitely understand some people go through more struggles than other and even if we don't agree we can't judge bc we don't know what position others are in.

She was 18. The song starts "I remember it all very well looking back. I was the summer I turned 18."
Her mom yelled "Fancy" right at that part of the song lol
I love you for reacting to the female country singers!!!!!

You are one of the best reactors out there. some of them are so boring. But you bring a lot to the songs you react to. Thanks so much
If u heard the lyrics in the beginning it said ‘ I remember it all very well looking back it was the summer I turned 18’. So she wasn’t 14

Please do Reba "does he love you" ft Linda Davis!!!! (not Kelly clarckson version)
I'm on it!

@@Ten13Grl If he is gonna do it, do the original!!!
@@dreamteamneal can you do more reba
The most recent rendition (Reba and Dolly) is officially my favorite now.
You should check out "Rose in Paradise" It's been done by both Waylon Jennings and Chris Young. A bit of a ghost story but a great story.

You are so cute in your reactions.
Check out "Back To God" by Reba..
Listen to some Vince Gill. He a a couple of duets with Reba
Don't let me down your mama's going to send you uptown.
Women for millennia having forced into arranged marriages they did not want it. That being said poor girls had to go out and get it for themselves
You should hear "why Haven't I heard from you" by Reba
She's trying to get her daughter a future and as a poor person in New Orleans this is the only way
Have you ever listened to it again?
Yes. Miss Reba came right in in like that hahahahahahaha. She did that.
I would love to get your take on "Somebody Should Leave". It's one of Reba's early works, and one, I believe to be one of her best.
She became a Mrs.
For a more upbeat and a not trying to make you cry song by Reba....check out "Turn on the Radio"

Turned out to live🤔😢
Not exactly hun, her mom did kinda pimp her out but she was 16 and her mom was dying and she couldn't figure another way to help Fancy survive, she thought that her and the baby would both die but she might be able to save Fancy
She was teaching her to become fancy AKA Reba McEntire. They grew up really poor and her voice was the only way out not to mention she had the looks!
Try highway man by the highway men
It was a different time don't be judgmental
MRS. REBA - so many greats. She is a force to be recon with!
The Queen is Dolly Parton!
Lol I don't think you want her to teach you. Charmed sexually. She was trafficked in with the big wigs and did what she had to in order to get out.
I never stopped to listen to the story, when it was what every one around me was enjoying. Had to dislike it to rebel. If I could turn back time, right?

You really need to just listen to the song. Country music is about story, not about the beat
Are you doing a reaction, of a reaction... ?
I don't think so
Reba
Consider me gone
She thinks his name was John
Why haven’t I heard from you
I have to pass on this video. Pausing the video every 10 seconds is exhausting. Just watch the entire video and focus on the lyrics.
Why don't you listen first before you start talking ?
NEAL - try listening to the song without all your talking.
I appreciate your going on and on about it's your show but I really want to hear the music!!!
You talk all you want when the Video is over.
ENJOY
You talk way too much
