I would have GLADLY watched that entire video at normal speed. Would've loved a step by step guide - I've dealt with vinyl before, and getting those perfect corners aren't easy! You are a true craftsman sir, wonderful job.
Indeed the corners requires that specific shape to be cut out in order to work. The big manufacturers just use templates so it's cut the same exact way, to that shape, every time.
I may have missed it, but did you cut a 90 degree "square" out for the corners? I did a project once that had curves, and I remember using triangular shaped relief cuts. Not too familiar with corners. Thanks for the reply!
The corners require a specific type shape, like an inkwell pen tip, in order roll smoothly over the routed edge and match up perfectly. There's a shot of the shape in the video.
I expected average hobby-style work as something else for change, but woodworking skill is definitely present here. Nice stuff in the end :) I'm sure you enjoy building it a lot :)
Very impressive. Next time use nicer wood and some shellac only. Spray paint is toxic. Better look and tone. If tolex, spread it out with roller even and not use wood glue for that application. Protect speaker with something when soldering. Overall though great job! Add chome corner bumpers, handle and make your own custom cab logo. Using a removable speaker cloth frame was very smart idea.
Dovetail joints would be the way to go for sure, but that's a little higher than my pay grade. The interior bracing and screws make this box super strong though. And damn heavy!
Hi Troy, This week I'm considering a 2x12 amp build. I'm curious, now that you've played through it for awhile. Is there anything you would have done different? Not oversized ? Not Pine?
Perfect video, wish a few spots were real time to better see what you did though. Question, I am thinking about building a 212 based off of an ENGL 212. Do you know if the dimensions listed would be inside the cab or outside the cab. I know it has to be set right for air space to get the sound you want.
Hi Tim. The measurements I gave in the article are just the exterior dimensions. I picked them by slightly upsizing the measurements of other cabs I own -- I'm totally ignorant to the acoustics science end of things!
It must be said that this is the largest (in terms of cu. in) horizontally mounted 2x12 cabinet I've seen, comparable to a Marshall MG412A 4x12 (9647 cu. in.) Closest I've found might be the Orange PPC212 (9588 cu. in vs. Troy's 9744.) I imagine the bass resonance sounds decent! Was this your first build?
***** What sort of screws did you use for the back panel? I'm in the process of hunting those screws to finish off my 2x12 build, and I'm not sure what they are called. Any ideas?
A question for you. Why are they built so heavy? Does it enhance the tone and sound? Blow moulded plastic shells are so much lighter and are mostly used for PA systems and also sound good. Is it just traditional to use the heaviest cases to house the speakers. I would like some comment on this please to better inform me. Cheers.
haha i grew up watching the Greatest American Hero, I found it on Netflix a while back and tried to watch it but the pilot show dragged and I couldn't finish watching it, i thought to myself "man these shows were so much better as a kid " haha. I uploaded a punk version of the song by a band called Zoinks.
Hey Troy, any audio samples from this new cab? How about some samples of it with different heads? Were you building to published specs or your own design?
"Design" would give me far too much credit! More like "picked some dimensions to see what would happen". Full details, including audio samples, in the linked article.
Great build, what is the material you wrap it in. I think everyone knows it from seeing it on their own cabinets, I just do not know what it's called or where you can get it. I would like a parts list.
Lars de Waardt Hi Lars! It's a good question, and somewhat confusing answer. Generally people call this "Tolex", but that was actually a specific brand name for a company that is no longer around. People still say it though, just like we say "Coke" and "Jell-O". Technically it's just "textured vinyl covering", which isn't as catchy. The material I'm using here is sold by MojoTone and it is called "Black Levant Tolex". "Levant" may be the name of the specific pattern on the material. But I'm not totally sure of that!
***** Thank you very much for your quick reply. I found it:-) www.mojotone.com/amp-parts/tolex-tweed-brand-british-style I knew there had to be more types but never realized there would be so many.
+e james ...and pine + Celestion = Cornford. That's my amp, and that's how they built their cab that came with it. But that's not why I chose these speakers. For more on the speaker tone analysis question you can check out the article we wrote to accompany the video: troygrady.com/2014/02/04/hail-the-cab-building-a-custom-2x12-cabinet/
I don't remember! But the irony is that you can definitely buy completed cabs, especially used ones, for less than it would cost to buy high-quality materials yourself.
Ok, cool. Thanks for the response. If you had all of the needed tools(electric drill etc) would it then work out cheaper than buying a new Marshall cabinet for example? Marshall cabinets are very costly(500 Euros plus)! It would be great if I could make one cheaply that would more or less be of the same quality as the Marshall. Thanks!
Is there a difference between mounting the speaker inside the cabinet versus outside? If you mount the speaker outside with the magnet and frame extending through the face plate it would be similar to how the manufacturers do it, right? I'm not criticizing, just wondering. Love the video, I suspect this is much harder than you made it look!
I think that's just the way the cabs I have are all built, so that's what I copied. Except for the Cornford 2x12 -- that's front-loaded. But the speakers are glued in and I couldn't get them out! :)
Good job!! can I ask you what´s that thing you put between the grill cloth and the frame? it´s a piping? I can´t see a piping when the cab is finished!! thanks!
Don't ever solder your speakers while your speakers are facing downward. The solder could drip and burn your cone. Not sure if it could burn through a cone (I haven't tried this on purpose), but I wouldn't chance it.
not gonna happen, probably every speaker ever soldered has been done this way.it wouldn't burn the cone, solder solidifies almost instantly and wouldn't burn a thick cone.your overthinking this and too worried.
hi i have a question. I have a fender mustang v head. each output(2) is label 75 watts / 8 ohm min. i just going to use one output. im planning to buy 2 speakers -- 60 watts 8 ohms each , since conecting 2 speakers in series reduce the ohms to 4, my question is, i am in risk to blow out each speaker? i think the ohms are reduce to half so im concern about it because the amp demands 8 ohms. thanks in advance
I'm actually using the G12-H30 Anniversary Edition in this cab. I picked them up at Guitar Center for about $150 each. Looks like that's still the going rate.
Actually the opposite. Once the glue cures, it fuses the vinyl with the wood. If you pull it off, you'll rip out chunks of plywood along with it. That being said it's much harder to get wood glue to flow smoothly unless you've got an applicator that can fan a thin layer across the surface. This leaves snail tracks under the vinyl. I used it purely out of ignorance. I switched over to contact cement for future builds, as is the more customary solution, and it flows much more smoothly.

Holeeeeee fawk bud. Way more than an amazing job. I build 212 cabs also but you make it loik so flawless. Love the vid
Great carpentry and woodworking skills. Very nice looking box.
The wood grain looked so nice.
100%. i am making one now using solid Walnut
Couldnt imagine how much materials, tools, time, planing and steps to build such thing
im doing it now- some planning but not too bad really- fun.
That is some first class workmanship! You're a skilled and very disciplined builder :)

Masterful! Thanks for showing me haw to cut a perfect edge without a table saw. I needed that. You Da Man.
and this cover of The Greatest American hero theme kicks ass
Very cool!
The datail of an 80's movie song type is also cool!
Cheers 🍺
I had 80s and early 90s TV series theme songs just running through my head as this video was playing lol.
I thought the begging of the video was a intro. I was like
"damn how long of a intro you gonna need"
Beautiful job!
it was pleasure to watch
OMG it's the GREATEST AMERICAN HERO theme !! Nice cabinet work.

Viking Poodle Thanks! And we are mighty jealous of your screen name.
Much respect with the build. I was thinking the whole time, "could have ordered a Friedman, and used that time to jam."
lame
Well done!
Well done Sir.
Ok. Can we have a video of things Troy CAN'T do? I know it'll be a very short video, but it'd make people like me feel a little less useless!
Very impressed!
nice, such primo craftsmanship
Good work Troy! My favourite speaker too Celestion G12 H!
Outstanding work, Troy! I'm suprised you didn't build the speakers too ;-). Absolutely inspiring to watch.

I love your stuff!
Nice job on the soundtrack lol!
Love you! Wish I had the know-how to do something like this!
My god this is so inspiring
Fantastic! The cloth on the front reminds me of the beds in the sick bay of the old Star Trek. LMAO Great looking cab!
Is that "The Greatest American Hero" sound track? LOL! Awesome video and tone/playing!
Good catch! It's part of the soundtrack for Episode 6, which is what we were working on around the time we put this together.
You're so disciplined man! At guitar and apparently everything else in life.
Where do you find the motivation? thru the results you achieved?
is this also good for just home audio? Or specific for guitar?
Great skills elegant cabinet

Nice job. I would like to make one and use the finger style design on the corners, you did a fine job and fast too.

excellently; very well.
Nice but why not contact adhesive to glue the tolex?
I woulda put casters on it instead of rubber feet ... but otherwise an outstanding cab build ! I'm a huge fan of the pine cabinet sound !
its mostly the speaker
Very detailed work. No handles?

Hey Troy, great video. May seem a bit random but do you still use this cab?
Thanks
Nice!
Sound like the song from George Castanza's Voice Mail! I like your jig for skill saw gone table saw!
+Dale Hyder I was singing it in my head the whole time!
Can I ask you a question how do you determine which speakers are louder then others decibels, sensitivity, ohms or Hhz ??? PLEASE HELP
all spkrs have a sensitivity rating at 1 watt. usually between 94-101dB's. dont play loud trust me. my ear rings 24/7= 15 years. it will never stop
