Philips 2200/1200 Superautomatic Coffee Machine Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 сер 2024
- In this video, we look at the entry level 2200 from Philips. This model may be the cheapest in the lineup, and without the LatteGo milk frother, but it can froth even better with the panarello detached. In this video, we look at espresso lungo, caffe crema, cappuccino in basic and advanced mode, making tea, and we finally have a look at the brew group.

Nice video. If you'll do more automatic coffee machines in the future, try some from Krups, De'Longhi or Jura (this might be on the higher end, but from what I read some years back, it does better coffee than most automatics).
@@cristinmariusJura is the best in my opinion. I’ll have to see if I can get my hands on one soon.
@@TomsCoffeeCornerWhat makes the Jura best to you? Espresso quality? Steamed milk quality? Reliability? Something else?
@@TealTechie They use larger coffee, pucks, resulting in a more intense drink. Some machines can even adjust their grind nearly find enough for a traditional espresso. Those, however, are the more expensive ones.
my grandma has this machine and i still can believe how easy the brew group is to clean and you should try i it on a columbian single roast from my own coffee roastery i started when i was 13 years old (im 14 now)
Thank you for this super-clear How To video.
I just bought a Philips 2200 machine and wanted to use up some ground coffee I have left over, before switching to beans. You didn't cover it here, and the instruction leaflet that came with the machine didn't explain how to make a coffee with ground coffee either.
In another UA-cam vid and on the Philips website, I discovered the way to do it is with a "magic long touch" on the coffee strength button, and the light switches to the measure cup symbol.
I thought I'd share that here for anyone else interested 🤓👍
I just wanted to take a moment and say that your channel and videos are an absolute delight to watch and are extremely informative and relaxing at the same time.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
I really liked how you measure each setting. The Best review ever, thank you
Excellent review. Thank you! I wish more reviewers shared your thorough approach.
Glad it was helpful, and thanks for the feedback!
Got the 3200 latte go for my cousin when it first came out and it's still going strong. She loves it as well as any guests she has over love it. I really wish they had an interchangeable nozzle so you could pop out the latte go mechanism and pop in a steam wand
Thank you so much for this review, very helpful!
I am interested in buying this machine and found this video. This is the best breakdown video I have seen !
Wow, thanks for the feedback!
Thank you for your sharing , I love this videos! 🎉❤
Thanks so much for this Tom. I have had this machine for a couple of months and you’ve provided with so much info to get my coffee better. I’m just so lazy reading instructions! Never noticed the option to reduce the water percentage on the espresso! Must get some new glasses! Great stuff!
Glad to help, and thanks for the feedback!
An Plus
While machine was not opened, Press "Water Adjust" buton for 3 secs and you can Adjust "Water Tempature."
(That info maybe helpful for Iced or Hot Coffee making :D)
Thanks for the review., Currently considering the version with the LatteGo system
The LatteGo system is certainly easier, as you just press a button. But you can get pretty nice microfoam if you just use this model and remove the panarello. And practice.
thanks for the detailed review always
You betcha!
very helpful thank you so much !
Love your cappuccino cup.😊
Just found your great channel as I’m searching to upgrade. I had been doing an Aeropress for a while now cuz I’m cheap but also cuz I still like the way it tastes but I think it’s time for something more automatic. I’ll probably end up watching A LOT of your videos today while sipping on some coffee, LOL
Awesome, thanks for stopping by, and good luck with your search!
Thanks for the review Tom, I've just bit the bullet and ordered one of these.
For anyone interested, I returned the coffee machine. IMO the extraction was very poor. I usually drink from a moka pot and this came no where near the quality of a moka pot.
The problem with this machine is that it makes just 6.9g pucks at most. It's just too little coffee. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Tom, how many grams in a puck would you expect for a decent cup of coffee? By decent I mean comparable to a mokka pot. Cheers in advance.
Geil! Viel Spass beim aufschauemen! Tom
This clip arrived at the perfect moment, when i drink my morning cappucino😅
You just blowed my mind! I had fee years ago an 3200 with a panarello, i tried to steam milk like you with it, but i did not succeed. I succeed this just with an Magnifica S from Delonghi because it had that plastic steamer longer. But i learned to do latte art with the Dedica, i learned a lot from you. Now i have an 5400 Lattego and i steam milk for latteart just with an french press, the lattego sistem just doesn’t steam it for my taste, my wife say that for her is perfect🤣 but…my OCD tell me something else. If i saw this video before…i woldn’t sell the 3200, even if i had some errors with the sensors(the machine itself probably had some problems)
Thanks Tom, i really waited for someone to do this kind of things with a machine from Philips. Happy coffee drinking!🙋🏻♂️🥳
Thanks very much for posting your experience with the machine! Yes, you can get better texture milk if you do it manually. The nozzle is short, so it does take a little practice. And, you need to use a small milk picture, either a 350 mL or 400 mL.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏🏻🐨🐨🦘
You betcha!
Fun review, thanks!
I like the idea of setting bean + water quantities independently before hitting the go button. My Delonghi allows variation of the bean amount, but setting the water volume is very iffy and I don't think it remembers the settings very well. Good enough for cappuccino, though, and for espresso I use the Sage. In fact, when I get to the last 100g of a bag of beans I dump them into the DeLonghi hopper and open a fresh bag for the Sage.
Re water filter cartridges, here in France I can get bottled water that has 3 mg calcium/litre, which is probably better than any cartridge can deliver. Tastes vile to drink but is fine for coffee. My machines say "descale me" about once every 6 months to a year.
Thank you for sharing. That sounds like a good way to run it. Cheers!
I've recently bought this machine and all want it it was a video like this where an actual expert like your self has a go with it. There are lots of user videos but they are not as informative. Your work really appriciated. And of course i got subscribed. Especially getting a silky textured milk was a big question for me and you explaned plenty. One question: is there way to replace panarello with a normal one maybe?
Thanks for your feedback! I haven't taken this machine apart, so I don't know about replacing the steam wand. It does ok though, when you just steam with the rubber nozzle. Cheers!
I have a gaggia classic pro and this machine I bought for the office, compared to a manual machine the espresso tastes very watery but that’s because I’m drinking coffee from 2 different machines everyday so I can tell the difference but I think if you only have this machine it’s satisfactory. Note a manual machine would be a very big step up from this bean to cup machine.
I'm glad I came to this review, otherwise I would not have known how incredibly loud this machine is. An important consideration for people with neighbors or people who are the earliest riser in their household.
While this is probably my least favorite SA so far, I do have to admit that ALL machines are loud, due to the vibratory pump.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thank you for that feedback. I am currently trying to decide whether to repair my old unit or replace it.
I am really enjoying your videos! I am currently debating between the Philips 3200 and the Delonghi Magnifico Evo.
Magnifica, for sure. I couldn't get a strong espresso shot from the Philips. Magnifica does this a bit better.
Thank you!! I'll be going with the Magnifica!@@TomsCoffeeCorner
Tom, you are truly amazing and make it so much easier to understand the love for coffee. I love my delonghi 885 and followed all your videos on the accessories and mods. My coffee and espressos have never tasted better. I have a question about your advice on coffee grinders. Right now I'm manually grinding my beans but would love to invest and buy a grinder but do not want to break the bank. Looking for something in the 200 to 300 range budget friendly with the best performance. TIA Jimmy
Hi Jimmy! Which market are you in? I can suggest the D40+ as a single dosing grinder: ua-cam.com/video/MywWDmMnZVc/v-deo.html
The Fellow Opus is also nice, but workflow is annoying. Baratza ESP is fine, and so is SGP. Have a look here for more options: kit.co/tomscoffeecorner/grinder-suggestions
@TomsCoffeeCorner Thank you so much, Tom! Love the review and really like that grinders style, too! I checked it out, and the white model is out of stock. I went with something similar, and I believe they are manufactured by the same company. I decided to purchase the Turin SD40 since they had a white model. The only difference I think is the stepless vs. the SD40 has a lock. Maybe you can come up with a mod for the SD40 Turin to make it stepless. Appreciate you and your videos. I didn't like the breville smart grinder pro too much after I had borrowed it from my friend, but it's a nice option, just not for me.
Great job Tom! Can you please do a review on the the Delonghi Dinamica Plus?
I will keep that in mind. I've done the Delonghi Magnifica, and that is very similar.
I found Philips 3200 from e-recycle bin from 2019. It got one main issue, main water pump silicone hose had rub through and caused pump to make huge noise. Fixed it with new hose. Second problem was steam valve sticking, fixed with replacement valve from e-recycle De'Longhi coffee machine. Next problem was brew unit inlet seals leaking, fixed with silicone lubricant. Next thing leaking was latte go -unit. Latte go does not really drip to coffee cup, De'Longhi is better. Start/stop button does not work correctly every time. In total they make good coffee, but build quality and design is way much better with De'Longhi Dynamica.
how do you make two regular coffees (2X), do you put a cup under than wait, then put another cup under, and how many scoops do you use
Hello, firstly thanks for the video but i have question in my mind that i struggle with. In my country Delonghi machines much more expensive than the philips series and i could buy 5400 cheaper than the magnifica evo, in that circumstances do you still consider to buy delonghi or philips is enough for the job?
If you say it is a huge difference, i may cancel my order to buy delonghi or do you have any cheaper recommendation for me?
Thanks for your review! I have a question about the milk, when i try to do the method without the extender of the steamthingy, the milk doesn't foam at all. Not even a slight bit, i tried multiple times with different milk and also different durations of steaming. It get's a bit silkier, but there's no foam and the milk just dissapears in the espresso. Any tips on what might go wrong? Thanks!!
been using a 3200 latte go around 3year+.. it's convenient that matter with simple push of button although just purchase myself ecp3420 due to finding it interesting to see the flow of coffee using a non pressurised portafilter especially from your video 😂
hey there i have a quick question , is the cleaning so tedious ? i want to get 2200 or another automatic machine instead of a manuel one but they say cleaning it becomes annoying after a while , what do you think about it ?
What grind setting did you use?
How often should I click on the aquaclean setting?
Can you turn the temperature on the coffee as it is not very hot
Hi! Really loved the video! I just boight a philips 2200 Lattego and i have some issues with the coffee pucks.. they are really watery even though i did 20ish coffees.. do you have any ideas what could cause that?
It doesn't compact the pucks all too well for me. Delonghi does better with this.
I got this machine this weekend and what I would like is if anybody could tell me if you should turn the grinder stick left or right to make it grind stronger coffee 😅 the symbol on it don’t make any sense for me…
Thank u
Which coffee maker do u recommend me? I need grinder, milk frothing and dripped coffee not only espresso…
Excelent video as always! I have been using a eureka mignon grinding machine with a delonghi dedica machine for over 2 years, but the process of using it measuring etc is getting kind of annyoing, but the coffe i get from is is amazing (15g - 40ml bottomless portafilter, i got the idea from you), how great a coffe a machine like this provides compared to that (we mainly drink cappuchino)? Im really considering getting a machine like this! Thank you!
@@zsoleszgamer6271 I’d get a Delonghi to be honest. The Phillips make too weak of drinks, once you’ve had proper espresso. Consider a Magnifica Evo or even better a Dinamica Plus. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip! So i guess those machines use more coffee/cup than this one, I will look into theese!
i think it is interesting that the steam milk is better without the wand but yes i do agree that there is a whole lot of froth with the panarello 😂
Great review. If you had to recommend this model (Philips 1200) or the Delonghi Magnifica S, which are about the same price. What model would you choose?
Hmm, probably still the Magnifica S. It has a steel burr, instead of the ceramic ones here. I think it can also grind anyway for 10 grams, not just 7, as with the Philips. Cheers!
Thanks for your quick response.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner is the steel bur better? phillips was marketing "ceramic" for "doesn't blunt over time like others"?
PS. Looking at this/delonghi superauto vs Bambino Plus + grinder - later is on the pricier side.. I drink mostly espresso/dopio in caffees, instant coffee sadly at home ... How is the taste from superautos compared to bambino+grinder in your opinion?
So your advice for the closet thing to a decent espresso shot is 3 dots on beans and 1 dot water? 7g for about 30ml water ?
@@fiinrii_9283 it’s about the best you can do, yes.
Where did you get that cappuccino cup? The one with the "better" cappuccino
Kruve, up der in Canada, eh.
Hi! I have an important question would be happy if you can answer. 8:26 you show the advanced cappucino by frothing the milk with smaller bubbles / more silky texture. can I do the same method you do with the lattego version? Thanks!
Hi Tom can you please help regarding how to get microfoamed milk with lattego :/
I recommend Starbucks Komodo Dragon coffee beans ☕️
I have zero inteterest in this machine, yet I still watched the video 😂. It was interesting.😊. Question :Where did you get the mug with the face from? Nice design.
Lol, thanks! My wife got the cup for me at a local furniture store. It's this guy: amzn.to/3RxDGyX (affiliate link)
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Tell your wife thanks! This will make a great gift for a coffee loving friend of mine 😃😄
You can! Im using same machine for 1 Month, That machine gives lovely crema (On Espresso and Coffee Modes), Fressnes was very high thanks to ceramic grinder,
Also, LatteGo is very optional, Steam Wand does amazing job, Even milk was out of fridge.
Any tips to make less foamy and more silky milk with lattego system?
Not much you can do there. Use cold, higher fat content milk. That's about the best you can do.
My parents has this exact machine, haven't really tried tasting the espresso made with that machine cause I wasn't a fan of coffee back then. Now I am, and I want to know the difference on the espresso taste compared to the delonghi ecp 35.31 manual espresso machine? Cause I'm planning to get one due to the positive feedback on your delonghi ecp 3420 videos. Thanks!
The ECP makes real espresso, while the Philips makes more of a Nespresso type drink - too small of a dose, and not ground fine enough imho.
@@TomsCoffeeCornercan you not change the grind in the beans compartment to have them ground finer?
@@bloodhoug82 unfortunately the finer setting is not fine enough.
Hello! Do we know the coffee doses for each intensity level? Thank you for the video.
6 grams - 🫘
6.5 grams - 🫘🫘
7 grams - 🫘🫘🫘
I measured them. I was surprised at how small the the amounts vary.
@@TomsCoffeeCornerthe water ratio to grams of coffee is very high for an espresso. I have a2200 any recommendation on how to have a more intense espresso ( aroma level is full, water level is low) coffee grind level is at 4 but not sure if lower is better?
cleaning just becouse of turning it on --> no go, thx for the info
But they all do that.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner nope - i bought a "Krups" again. Those do signal to be "de-calced?" and cleaned about every few weeks? (maybe depending on the use-frequency).
no, i dont get paid - its just the truth!
i am a technician - i fear machines which think they are smarter than me (even if they sometimes are).
i am a strong believer, that machines serve me - not the other way around.
@@marionocnik9378 You don't have to decalc this because of the water filter.
is it possible to put tape over the panarello hole so u have a longer steamwand without the added air ?
I wonder about that too
I'll have to try that out one of these days. Cheers!
id love an automatic, but that grinder isn't a burr and the tamper really needs to be able to get cleaned
Is it possible to make ristretto with this machine?
I'd say no. Max dose here is 7 grams, so you'd have to stop it at 7 grams yield for a ristretto. I don't think it can be stopped that quickly.
Is it worth to buy this instead of delonghi dedica in terms of coffe quality ?
Yes, I'd say so. But the Dedica is more work than a superautomatic.
Hi Tom. I have been looking for a Sage/Breville Oracle reviews online but nothing came up substantial. Could you please refer me to one or do one yourself in future?
Also I'm new to coffee craze/hobby and I have Delonghi Dedica EC785.
I'm having a very hard time dialing it in for espresso probably due to lack of experience.
My equipment is
1. the machine,
2. a scale,
3. Sage/Brevillle Dose control grinder.
4. Ims baskets
5. Bottom less porta filter
6. Ims shower to replace the original one in the brew head
7. Tamper and jugs that came with machine.
I'm new and having quite a hard time dialing in. 😣
Doing milk frothing is also a challenge.
I'm seriously thinking of switching to Breville sage machines
Maybe I'm lacking technique or need lots of practice but I'm feeling like lost and dint know where to start.
Help please.
Well, it sounds like you have good accessories for your equipment. If you could upload a video, I would take a look at your workflow. It does take a little practice. Also, you need freshly roasted beans. Where are you getting your beans from?
@@TomsCoffeeCorner thanks for your reply. I'll find some time this weekend to make a video and share with you.
I mostly use Lavazza beans. Here in Pakistan we got a few roasters. One of them only sells through their coffee shop called FlowCoffePk. They have very nice tasting coffee that I used once. I intend to get more from them. But mostly it's Lavazza I buy especially their Super Crema blue bag.
I hope to master the home coffee barista title. It's after a very long time in my adult life that I have adopted a hobby that I enjoy and find satisfying. I'm hopeful with your videos I'll get to learn more. Thanks for your videos and words of encouragement.
Noch was, wiegst du deine Dosierung? Das ist wichtig. Gruss!
@@TomsCoffeeCornerhallo, vielen dank schonmal für die Antwort. Ich würde probieren es zu filmen und ein Video davon hochladen. Ja ich wiege es ab es sind immer circa 16 Gramm im Sieb
Mine just arrive today and my pucks are very little and super watery. My setting is 3 on strength and 2 on quantity. Any idea what goes wrong?
The largest pucks I am able to get from Philips is just 7 grams. Delonghi makes larger pucks.
Play with grinder size, im using level 6 and its gives balanced flavour.
Can I use coffee capsules ?
Nope, sorry.
This or the Magnifica S or the EQ300?
Never tried the EQ300, but I'd say go for the Magnifica Evo if you can swing it.
Hello Tom! What would you chose between this one or the Magnifica Start? and why? Thanks for your reviews :)
Magnifica will be better in my experience. Larger pucks, and included milk frother. Cheers!
Delonghi mi veya Philips mi hangisini öneriyorsun? Yardimci olurmusun
Delonghi. Philips' coffee pucks are much smaller.
Is the 800 model any good
@@excellerateurbreath That one looks the same as this one. The machine itself is OK, but the pucks are too small for me. I’d suggest considering a DeLonghi Magnifica Evo or Start.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner best buy has the 800 for about half the cost of the others. Do you think just making two coffees per coffee could work, if that makes sense? Thanks for your feedback!!
The lack of control outweighs the convenience on these types of machines, in my opinion. Fine for a work/business machine I suppose
I have the gaggia cadorna, the group is the same but I got full control because of the LCD display.
Nice video but you don't mention nothing about the grinder setings you have ...
Shoot, I missed that point! I had it set on three out of 12. I feel like a finer grind, might result in a slightly higher pressure extraction.
I've seen a lot of these in the 2nd hand market being sold much cheaper than the original price. apparently people are not that satisfied
You could very well be right! Delonghi makes a better superautomatic in my opinion.
The Philips 2200 or the Magnifica S?
I'd say those are about a wash. Get the Magnifica Evo if you can swing it. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner bought the Evo. Thanks!

I just want a machine that will extract a good espresso for a simple iced coffee.. And I'm tired of watching videos and taste nothing 😅
Do I even need a machine for this!
I mean if the coffee will be iced, I feel like any coffee prep method will do. Especially if you're adding milk and syrups. But anyway, this is a cheap machine that will accomplish an iced coffee too, as you just need some ice.
I love my 3200 and had in old Vienna plus for about 15 years till I brought it to work and it last 3 months with those idiots I work with.
You didn't measure cappuccino's temp. 🤔🤔
Sorrry!
Tom's Coffee Corner - Great video and review.
For me, an unimpressed, unhappy owner. A VERY hard pass. Some notes:
. Obviously never use oily beans it will kill any but especially this thing, stone dead. (I didn't use them.)
. Do NOT per the reseller, use the filter if your water source is like mine, super purified and/or reverse osmosis.
. Use only 1 scoop for the ground coffee if you use it at all. The scoop that came with it - no other. You've been warned, LOL.
. Clean this thing deeply and religiously.
. My town in WA state is littered with tons of good espresso places and some bad ones. Surprising amount of excellent ones. A barista dropped by and tried a doppio said 'meh.'
. Leaked from bottom after 2 years repair company said quote "I found that the boiler pin was not able to seal under pressure leading to the described leaking." Don't let a repair company screw you for expensive repairs when it's an almost zero-cost pin.
. The logic chip on this thing is wack! You will be unplugging the machine frequently to reset the logic, otherwise the warning "cannot brew" dreaded light comes on - when there is no reason it should.
. My observation is that you CANNOT make real espresso with this machine. Buy say a JURA or a machine at least the $1100 price point. What you get with the 1200 is a machine that cannot maintain the correct temperatures. Resulting in a slightly sour drink that is not really espresso - close, but it's like overshooting (or in this case under-shooting) an omelette and ending up with a different, but related animal.
.
I really enjoyed the video btw. Just not this machine.
Thanks for sharing all that experience. The Philips machines are meh, in my opinion, too. The Dinamica Plus is my goto recommendation right now.
Jura is also good, but you cannot access the grinder or brew group, which I think sucks. Seattle area is nice! Been to the Gorge a couple times. Cheers!
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks! I'll have to look at the Dinamica Plus.
I had this exact machine had it for 2years I got it on a mother's day special it's been in to be fixed twice
1st time there was water leaking from the bottom of the machine and that was not long after I got it so we sent it away to get fixed the hose had blown hole we eventually got it back told if there any more problems bring it back we paid the guy got it back home made coffee it tasted yuk so after a few days I tried it again made coffee and same so we rinse it made a coffee and back to be fixed only this time we told him if it's not possible and to expansive throw it away I will never trust this brand coffee machine again
I’m sorry to hear that, but thanks for sharing your story.
You are not cleaning the brew group. You are cleaning the panarello. The brew group cleans itself every time you turn on or off the machine. You have an option to use a degreasing tablet that you put in the coffe inlet.
I have to add that you warn us in anorher video not to use the coffe inlet for grind coffe because of mold buildup. This inlet is the same the machine uses when it grinds coffe, so the problem would be the same. I have a 5400 for a year now and zero problems with this.
What you have to be careful of with the coffee inlet, is that the coffee doesn’t get stuck on the funnel. Which generally does happen when you put it in from above. If you do do that, you need to clean it out afterwards. Then you won’t have any issues with mold either.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner There's also coffee all around the path from the grinder to the basket. And there's water vapour. No matter what you do there's always coffee powder. You can get rid of the coffee clumps that get stuck in the walls, that sometimes account for half the dose 🤣, but that's all. I always put mi finger inside the funel to push down all the ground coffe. But as I said before, zero mold in one year.
i have this machine and i genuinely hate the cleaning process... all the ease and comfort of a automatic machine is gone instantly by cleaning this. The coffee is everywhere inside. Removing the tray is clumsy. Working with grease is not nice. The taste is often wrong. Why did i buy this and not a semi automatic. Or something easy to clean
Have you had the grinder apart? I have a Gaggia Brera super auto, which uses at least the same brew group, cleaning it every week. The grinder is an extremely fussy, flat burr system. It can only handle a very narrow range of beans in the light to medium roast.
Why did you buy this? Probably for the same reason as everyone else who bought one... it's a very reasonable price for an espresso machine...
Espresso and definitely the coffee crema looks ans tastes terrible. Tom,admit it😮
Well, I said it's really rather a lungo if anything. It's like a 5:1 ratio at best. But I like to cover these machines, because people do like them, and I feel like they therefore should get a full review.
The main issues i see ppl having with these styles of super sutomstics is that they they buy really really cheap old stale coffee from the supermarket and then use it up in the next 6 months or so.
And they wonder why the coffee tastes like sh*t
This is true. You need fresh beans for sure.
Ofc. I'm Using my neighbor's local coffee shop and im using within 1 month (On Filter Coffees.)
I Guess I Will consume the Espresso Blend approx. 4-5 months, and buy an Another package.
(Considering Beans will go much fresh as grinded, I Think im saving an 3-4 months extra.)
Avoid Philips at any cost
I prefer the Magnifica Evo, but the Philips if you prefer smaller 6-7 gram doses.
@@TomsCoffeeCorner The brewing group alone says enough about the longevity of the Philips machines.
WAIT A SECOND! I know that milk packaging
