    I’m still recovering from the realization that the thumbnails on my videos that have gotten the most views are ones featuring pictures of younger and more handsome men than I.🤓

    I’d not have guessed you scripted your content, Scott, nor would I have noticed all the edit cuts you make if you hadn’t detailed your process (786!!). I have a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into your content; you make look so seamless. No wonder I always find your videos so engaging!
    This isn’t directly on point for the topic of this video, but I’d also like to say I appreciate how generous you are in highlighting fellow booktubers, not only during videos like reading booktubers favorite books, but just dropping suggestions for lesser known booktubers as you did with Made U Book earlier today.

    I'm just a viewer and a relatively new subscriber but I am *here* for the hyperbole!! It's not every day you watch a booktube video that includes stuff like "If you don't like Hank Green you probably drink the blood of children" 😂

    Agree with so many of your tips. I don't generally take the time to script but I edit like a bandit out of hell. I love editing and I think that is what saves me and it takes me on average 3/4-6/8 hours depending on the type of content and how refined I want the video to be. I think I would also enjoy being an editor for hire! I am going to keep working on those thumbnails....lol. I think I have an existential booktube fear - losing massive numbers! I'm really happy to hear that you are never leaving booktube.Scott, it would be a less interesting place without you.

      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Рік тому

      I can tell you love to edit, it comes across in your videos. I'm firmly in the scripting camp, but I think you are a great example of how editing can be used to create great videos too, there's more than one way to do things and after all, we need a solution that is enjoyable.
      I use to share your fear of losing numbers, then one day I lost 40. I'm still not sure what happened, but I think bots subscribed to me and youtube cleaned them out. But, after that I realised, I'm going to lose a few every week, but I'm also going to gain subs, and losing subs that aren't interested in what I'm doing is good for my channel growth. Now I lose subs the moment I post a video, but later on I gain more from that video; losing subs is one of those bad things that has to happen for good things to happen, Jack Edwards probably losses 100s of subs everyday, but gains 100s too.

    Your recommendation of Filmora to me the other week saved my bacon and it is so much simpler to navigate and use than the much more expensive editing software I was using before! Some great tips in this video, Scott - I'm not ready to listen to them all 😉 but I think I will take your scripting idea and apply it in a small way to improve my book reviews (and possibly also when I'm talking about books I haven't read) - I am going to try scripting the synopsis, because I think that will improve the way I give the context for my review. I'm usually working from my notes for a review but I don't usually include a synopsis in those notes so I am usually winging it!

    I found this fascinating because I love to know what other booktubers have as their process, I think we all work in different ways. I find my favourite of my own videos are somewhere between scripted and off the cuff ie the ones where I have a very clear plan but not a script. I do script the more in depth videos such as Book vs TV and Readers Guides that I’ve done, but I find it hard to position the script in that sweet spot that means you can’t see me looking at it. Sometimes for me a script leads to more edits, other times less! I am a terrible waffler though so maybe I should script more.🤷‍♀️😂

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Рік тому

      I think the important part of scripting is knowing what you want to say before you film, so I think a clear plan ticks that box. The first few times I scripted you can see me constantly looking to the side, while I solved that by having the script on the laptop I'm filming on, I still often read the paragraph I'm about to say before saying it... But some days I just can't say the words I've written down, so there's lots of edits as I repeat lines.

    This is a great video, very informative - I subscribed. Totally agree about the need to provide something unique and of value - the Booktube makers market is already flooded with people who make certain videos, similar to other people. Your video is an excellent example of how to make a video which takes part in the ongoing discussions (is not on a unique topic), but made with a personal twist (questions in a different order) plus added bonus of personal insights. Very worthwhile.

    i don't ever intend to have a channel but i still loved this video and i hundred per cent agree with your statement about trying to establish what you liked or didn't about a book so that a viewer can decide based on that whether he/she would like the book. when i was young and avidly reading movie reviews by pauline kael in the new yorker it was just that which i loved...it wasn't as much if she liked or disliked a film but why which allowed me to profit from her reviews so much.

    Wow. So much great advice. I am just starting out but can’t imagine not scripting. Maybe it’s because I have a background in theatre. I feel like I *could* wing it but why would I do that when I can instead be prepared. On video, one can still be more loose and not word for word. But having some framework I think makes a big difference. I notice the difference in the booktubers who to me have a clear script they are going by.

    Ohhhh I love a haul video! I like to make videos that I like to watch, because the people that watch them and make them are my people. That's my top content-maker tip 😊

  • @eyesonindie
    @eyesonindie Рік тому

    Quality content, as always. I think the tough thing about TBRs and hauls and "what I read this week" videos is they often don't capture our imagination. They are just reports. I realized very recently that to be a bookish content creator without incorporating the lessons of storytelling from the books we're raving about... is kind of insulting to the books! 😅😂 So going forward I really want to practice telling stories through my videos. But it's hard!
    Also, I have a technical question for you about digital images of book covers. On my videos, I keep the cover image up the entire time I'm talking about the book. I do that because I watch Booktube while making dinner and washing dishes, so I often take my eyes off the screen. Sometimes my mind wanders. Then I'll hear something interesting from the Booktuber and I'll look up and say, "oh! What book are they talking about again? I forget!" And if the book cover image is no longer on the screen, I get cranky because I can't rewind (my hands are covered in dish soap!!!). HOWEVER, I have a feeling there is a really good reason some Booktubers remove the cover image after a few seconds and don't keep it up the whole time they are talking about that book. But what is that reason!?! Because it might change my editing process!!
    Thanks for all the work you put into your videos, including the script! Personally, I love a scripted video.

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Рік тому

      I think there's 2 reasons I can think of for removing the cover so quickly, laziness, it's just the default length an image is added or it's because it's hard to do other edits with a book cover in the way.
      BTW, I know I haven't commented on the last few of your videos (like you I watch when I do dishes or cook and it's difficult sometimes), but I really think your content is some of the best out there, very thoughtful and considered. I loved how you linked the quote from the book into your intro for your last video, so effective as a hook and it told me about the book too.

    • @eyesonindie
      @eyesonindie Рік тому

      @GunpowderFictionPlot That is very helpful - I was worried that I was annoying people by keeping the cover up so long! But I will carry on. This was really good advice. I can tell that you do put a lot of time into the research and editing. Scripting didn't work for me starting out, mostly because I forget the lines then stress myself out. I should try again though as it would probably make things less rambly.

      I probably didn't focus enough on saying, just improve one thing at a time. Scripting is a great idea, but if you're stressed about other things already, then it's hard to learn - but, don't memorise your script, find a way to read it as you film, so much easier! Also, I know some people really like scripting in dot points, so you cover all your topics, kind of half script it, like when you planned an essay at uni.

    LOVED THIS!!!! As a new booktuber, I am obviously trying to get used to everything. This was all great advice and I am excited to incorporate it. Also, thanks for the editing software and thumbnail advice. The idea of editing is scary and I have been looking for something to try. Filmora was the one I was leaning toward so you just sealed the deal!
    The section on negative comments is also super important. Thankfully, I am new enough to not have had too many but there was one that destroyed my soul because it was meant to make me feel dumb. I’ve since learned some ways to mentally cope with these types of comments, but I’m curious if you have any specific advice? Also, do you personally interact with those negative comments, delete them, or just move on and let them have an opinion without responding?

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Рік тому +2

      With negative comments, it depends on exactly the comment and my mindset on that day, but if they say something for example trans-phobic or racist, I delete and block, because I don't want trans or POC viewers to see that when they're commenting. If it's aimed at me, and if I'm feeling petty, I will interact, I think deleting and banning is the best thing; but sometimes that's the actions of a much more disciplined and reasonable person than me. I always try to remember how upset they must be to leave those comments, and being that upset doesn't come from disagreeing about a book.
      Also on editing, it is scary. I totally recommend doing 1 or 2 things at a time, learning, moving on, adding in a next thing.

      I think we discussed scripting before and you plan out your videos, so you get lots of the advantages of scripting already. But also, if you did script, you would get use to things pretty quickly I think. I think you are spot on, if it's hobby income that can be different again, it's easy for me to say script, but it is time consuming and I'm always impressed with all the things you do, I'm not sure how you would find the time to script without cloning yourself.

    Thanks for a lot of interesting advice. I would like to start up my own booktube channel, but I'm terrified of the editing process. I get analysis paralysis just thinking about trying to learn how to do video edits. Scripting, as opposed to just rambling and getting lost in digressions that would require heavy editing, sounds like a really good idea. Content consistency might be an issue for me too, because I have somewhat eclectic reading tastes, and the people who might like to watch videos about the Women's Prize for Fiction are not necessarily the same as the people who are interested in my plans to read the extended Stephen King Dark Tower multiverse, who again aren't the people who are interested in Classics Bingo. So I guess I either need multiple channels (and let's face it, Hank Green I am not) or I need a hook of some sort, a different type of consistency to my videos. Something to mull over while I watch videos about making videos and try to actually take in practical editing information. Thumbnails! I hadn't even thought of thumbnails! I might just outsource that part to my teen, against a share in future profits (think my kid is too bright to fall for that one though)

    • @GunpowderFictionPlot
      @GunpowderFictionPlot  Рік тому

      One of the things I didn't say and I really should have, is it's a process, you don't have to do everything all at once. Please don't be intimidated, make anything and improve one things at a time.
      Also, I wouldn't be stressed about the eclectic reading taste, I can think of a few booktubers who I think would enjoy Stephen King, Classics and The Woman's Prize, Stephanie at Time to Read, Heidi at My Reading Life, Alice and the Giant TBR, Alyssa at Nerdy Nurse Reads all come to mind. I think you will find an audience.
      When I said consistency, that's about how you make a video, not the books you read. So you're review might be as simple as description, I liked x, I disliked y, I gave it z stars, I recommend this book is you also liked x.
      Thumbnails are easy once you've done a dozen or so. Don't stress.

      Hi - I'm sorry you're having trouble getting into the community. I can see you're having trouble, you can definitely get some more engagement and make more friends.
      How often do you comment on other Booktubers videos? When you do comment, how many other people have commented on that video?
      Search for book reviews of books you loved; try to find channels with less than 1k subs, with similar tastes in books and start talking to them. I also recommend searching for the Booktube newbie tag once a week, filtering it to the last week and trying to find channels with similar tastes or with good vibes.
      Learning about the bookish events will take care of itself if you watch enough different channels. I also think it would be good to have a wrap or a video along the lines of my favourite books ever or of the year or something like that so somebody can get an idea of your reading tastes.

      Your videos are in a different class to almost every other creator Martha. I know this is not how our brains work, but you should have no fear about your content being worth money, you're a creative genius.

      Bless you - Thank you.
      Git that money, Friend. If it doesn't go to you and your beloved, it'll go to someone less worthy

      I suspect you plan your videos very well... But I'm always surprised with how organised you are in your videos for a non-scripter. You were one of the people I was thinking of at the end when I said I was impressed with some non-scripters, but think how amazing their videos could be if they scripted.

      @@GunpowderFictionPlot Haha! I felt that message was for me and it resonated. Honestly, I'm so content with my current process that I think scripting would stress me out. I may try one day. :) :)
