  • The 250th Anniversary of the Huntington Declaration of Rights occurred on 6/21/24.
News 12 Long Island provided coverage of the event. I covered their coverage.
As a continuation of the event the Huntington Militia had a commemorative ceremony to the Huntington Town Green on Sunday June 23rd. It included cannon firing, changing of the Town flag, musket salute and a bayonet charge after the reading.

Have you ever been part of these re-enacments? Imagine those days, people running at you and your trying to prime that canon.

Cannons were for things and people. There were also mortars. A cannon ball would be used at a distance. Then they used solid shot rather than explosive, That was meant to tear through the ranks. Infantry was lined up in rows to amass rather inaccurate musket fire. As they approached the cannons would switch to canister/grape shot. This had the effect of large shotguns. Artillery was usually farther behind. And though an artillery position could be over run, typically they had time to fire many rounds before it led to bayonet charges. The Battle of Monmouth NJ was an artillery duel before it became a clash of muskets.

@@chrislauterbach8856 Damn! I watched a documentary on the surgeons of the civil wars, it was brutal. Loss of limb from a canon ball, made my eyes water. I would love to do a photo shoot at one of those.
