- South African virologists say the Mpox outbreak in Africa was neglected and it could now turn into the next global pandemic.
President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep concern about the rapid spread of the disease across the African Union region.
Last week, three additional countries notified cases under investigation for confirmation, which brings to 16 the total number of countries where Mpox has been detected.
Let's welcome Prof. Adrian Puren, Executive Director of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases to speak more on this.

South Africa is in a fortunate position to have diverse groups of people who bring their expertise and proficiencies to bear on medical outbreaks, crises and emergencies without having to depend solely on foreign experts for critical assistance. The rest of the continent are not as fortunate.

Relax. This is not the same as COVID. While yes concerning the odds of this becoming a pandemic are low. COVID became a pandemic in large part because 1. It was an entirely new disease. 2. It spreaded so fast it was hard for health care to get a grasp around it especially with no vaccine or known medicine to treat it. This is not the case for mpox, mpox spreads primarily through skin contact and has been around for years. Professionals know how to treat it and there’s a vaccine for it. Something would need to go very wrong for this to cause a pandemic.
How did panic work for you before?
If you are so unable to control your emotions, then you should not be anywhere near responsibility nor should your opinions be heeded.

Which populations is it spreading in? Which age-groups are the most vulnerable? Where are people getting it? You vaguely alluded to the patterns reported elsewhere. Is it the same for the current spread in South Africa?
