It’s difficult to know how to express myself on social media when there is so much sorrow and devastation in the world we live in, particularly in Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine.

great explanation...you kept it simple and understandable....thanks
Glad it was helpful Bob. 😁
Thanks for your Amazon list , helped me know what to buy for rose Wall support.
You are so welcome! Happy I could help.
I'm over here in Ireland and been growing bare root for years. I just went on to J.Parkers Wholesale and delighted to say they look like they will deliver here so fantastic. Usually buy from Europe but always on the lookout for something new ;). My only issue with bare root is a lot of the colours are just plain wrong. Especially Oriental Poppy's for some reason. The amount of time's I've planted Royal Wedding and it comes up orange 🙄 Still, bare root is the way to get something a bit different. And, it is always better to plant out at least five perennials, of the same kind, instead of just one. They look better and they are less likely to get bullied out by something else.
Oh, I'm so glad JParkers will deliver for you - they've only ever got dahlias wrong for me - the bare roots have always been reliably what I ordered so I hope you have some better luck with your poppies.
@@cottoverdi Oh lol, I spent ages choosing some lovely bits and pieces and then found I couldn't actually order anything. I'd say they used to deliver here but now, brexit. :( Massive waste of time and such a shame, they have so much variety. Sorry about your dahlias lol. Almost worse considering the work involved with them.
I have been on that site but from what i can see it say they dont deliver to Ireland.Just wondering any chance i am on the wrong site .Thanks
@@michaelhutchinson1029 I spent ages filling a basket and then no. I should have known we can buy nothing like that from the UK. I ended up buying from farmer gracy, but really, the bare root season is over now. I think our options are farmer gracy or bulbi NL
My first bare root perennials are on the way. CANNOT wait. The excitement is building
yay - how exciting!
Very helpful and informative thanks, And love Baloo’s attempts to help!
Thanks Angela. Baloo is hysterical. He just wants to be everywhere all the time! 🐈😻
Thanks. I've been working with bare roots but didn't know I should soak them before planting them.
Ah, so glad I could help. Soaking them is hugely beneficial. Good luck with yours 🌸😁
Can’t wait to see how they grow.
Me too! 💚🌸
I'm intimidated by roots! So this is extremely helpful!
Hi Holly, thank you, this is exactly how I felt in the beginning so I'm glad I could help you feel more confident too. Let me know if you have any questions. 😁🌸
That Astbile looks amazing - all the pinks ! :)) I didn't know you can order Papaver poppy as bare roots ... ! That's interesting !
Thanks Matheya. Yes, so many plants are available as bare roots and I love it because it makes it so much more economical for me 😁
EXcellent video -- Although bare roots don't look like much, remember they are TOUGH. I soak mine over-night. I do mostly hostas. Often, after an overnight soak, a tiny leaf or two will emerge. Just remember if you put them in pots, place them outside where they are supposed to be. Hostas like shade, so that's where I put my pots.
Yes, all good advice - thanks Josie. 💚🌸
@@cottoverdi i got geraniums bare-root packaged in a plastic sealed box. Can I plant them directly in the ground or pot them up first and let it leave out before I transplant in the ground.
I"m getting bare root hostas in the mail this week, and I intend to put them in pots, BUT we are still getting hard freezes at night....should I still put them outside even though it's still freezing?
Loving the bloopers 😂
Thanks Jack - good to know someone is staying till the end! 🤣
I love your video! Quick question do you cut the stem back if it's not exhibiting any green or life?
Thank you. No, I don't usually touch the stem at all.
@@cottoverdi thank you so much for the quick response! My bareroot strawberry plant is already blooming but the hydrangeas look a little tired lol
I look forward to seeing how they do. Where did you buy them?
Hi Annie, I ordered them from J.Parkers Wholesale - there's a minimum order of 5 of each plant but it's very economical if you need that many (as I do!). 🌸🌺🌿
I wish I had seen your video before I planted all my bare roots. I didn’t soak them first. They’re in pots for 4 weeks now. Should I take them out and soak or just leave as is and hope for the best 🫣
Hi, if they've been in their pots for 4 weeks, I'd leave them. Are they showing signs of growth? Have you kept them watered? They might be ready to plant out.
@@cottoverdi sorry I’ve only just seen your reply. Some are showing growth and some aren’t. My delphiniums seem completely dormant. I have an allotment so I think I will plant out and see what happens. Fingers crossed they’re ok 🤞🏻
Hi, where did you put your pots? Outside against a wall on saucers? Through winter is OK? How often do you water them? Do you let the rain fall on them? Can you pot them straight into the garden in mid November UK? Thanks so much!
Hi Louise, yes, I put these bare roots straight outside into nursery pots - just out in the open, I didn't bother to try to protect them at all since they were all hardy. I put them on pallets so, no, I do not use a saucer for them and I let the rain fall on them.
If you get them in November, it is an ideal time to put them straight in to the garden - they will spend the winter months making new roots and settling in and then in the spring they should burst into life. Good luck with yours.
Thank you so much, just what I needed to see. Such a good video. With frost coming up next week, would you pot them up in a old basement or outside ? thank you
Hi Shirley, that's a tricky one because it depends what you've purchased - if they're hardy perennials, then they can definitely be potted up and left outside but if you think it's going to be particularly cold, you could lay a bit of frost cloth or an old sheet over them at night (but remove during the day). I wouldn't leave them in a dark basement - they will all be needing light. If you have a cold frame or greenhouse, then these will also work as frost protection. If they aren't hardy, then you definitely need to keep them indoors or protected somehow until your frosts have passed but they will need light - so potted up and kept in a cool but light room should work. Hope this helps. Good luck.
Can you plant bare root perennials outside even if you're still getting hard freezes? Or should you plant them in pots and put them out when it gets warmer??
Hi Heidi, I think it's a big risk unless they are super hardy and haven't been grown in a protected environment. If they've come from a grower, where they used a greenhouse, instead of a field, then they will not be used to the cold temps and will struggle. I've always found it best to wait until it's no longer freezing. It's best to pot them up, water then and then give them lots of light and protection, like in a cold Frame or greenhouse. Hope this helps.
@@cottoverdi It absolutely does! Thank you!! 💜
Hi can I please ask where you purchased them from? (UK) and the varieties. Thank you very much
Hi Paula, I bought these from Parker's Wholesale. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.🌱🌸
Hi Annette. Its Rose. i watch your videos and i enjoy them all the time. i am subscribed to your channel. where did you get the roots? i am interested☺
Hi Rose, How lovely to meet you, and thank you so much! I ordered these from J.Parkers Wholesale (www.dutchbulbs.co.uk) because I needed a lot, but I think there are quite a few companies who will send out bare rooted perennials. Hope this helps.
Hi Annette, I’ve ordered some bareroots a few weeks back but haven’t received yet, it’s not to late? When would the cut off point be? Luv your videos, best wishes fro Ireland 👍🌱
Hi John, I think you still have plenty of time. You can really plant them almost all year long but the warmer it gets, the more you will have to keep an eye on the watering situation. I should think the nursery will be sending them out this month. Good luck - I hope you have great success. 🌺🥀💚
@@cottoverdi Thanks for advice and quick reply Annette 🌼🌱💕
❤
Thank you 💚
If i have hardy geranium with lots of shots sprouting, so i plant n bury the shoots or let stick out. I have kaya geraniums and confused because I don’t want them to die
Hi, sorry for the late reply - I have been away for a week. If the bar root plant has shoots, then you need to plant as normal, with the shoots above the soil but, depending on how hardy the plant is, you may need to give it some protection from the cold (if it is cold where you live). If the weather is warm and the plant is hardy, then the shoots won't need protecting. Hope this helps. 😁🌸
Hi Annette! Thanks for the information! Did your pots experience any frost outside? Did you cover them if so or are they okay?
Hi there, yes, there has been frost and everything is absolutely okay. No issues at all. Thanks for watching. 🌸🌿
Who do you buy your amaryllis from?
Hi Dorothy, I bought mine from Farmer Gracy last year. They were lovely big and heathy bulbs.
We're did you buy your root plants?
Hi Markitia, I buy them from various different places online. If you live in UK, try Farmer Gracy, J Parker's and Sarah Raven (although she can be a bit £££).
