As far back as nine years ago, the online reviews of the camera characterized its use of shutter angle as an "odd design choice," which may have its origin in the fact that Blackmagic Design is an Australian company. I'm relatively new to filmmaking and I'm trying to use the camera for top-down videos, and, so far, it's been a challenge. So much trial and error! I've a lot to learn. 😐

Surprised there's so few comments here! Such insanely useful information and it's for once ALL CORRECT. Unfortunately so much confused misinformation on these subjects out there. Playing with different shutters is so fun once you get to a point in your learning, that you can understand how they benefit things. I shoot mostly music videos and love to go down to 72⁰ (or sometimes even 45⁰) for energetic performance scenes. It makes a band with moderate movement on stage, seem 10x more intense and into it! It looks AMAZING on drums because of all the fast moving parts. For storyline/b-roll/narrative scenes in my videos I typically stick to 180⁰ or sometimes just a bit higher to get a more dreamy look.

At last I've found someone who can explain concisely the relationship between shutter speed and shutter angle. So basically they do the same thing and is that to expose a film for a precise amount of time. Correctly me if I'm wrong to say that in modern cinematography, shutter angle is obsolete i.e. no longer in use. For example, there is no disc with a cut out in my camcorder. It is now replaced by the camera shutter. If I'm wrong then my brain is not working and I need to see a psychiatrist.
I have no idea if a psychiatrist is needed or not. My guess would be, “yes” for most people, myself included. Your understanding is correct. The term “shutter angle” is used to describe the shutter speed that is relative to the frame rate. Shutter angle is generally used for rotary shutters where a disc containing the angled opening spins and lets in light once per revolution to expose every frame. The shutter speed is lower when the angle is larger. You’re right about the shutter angle being obsolete as digital cameras these days (including pro models such as RED) are electronic and don’t use a physical shutter any longer.

I was looking at the manual for the Canon XA-40 for you. It’s here: www.usa.canon.com/support/p/xa40 There is a listing of adjustments when in Manual Exposure here: www.manualslib.com/manual/1592317/Canon-Xa40.html?page=42 I’m thinking you can roughly adjust the aperture and shutter speed to what you need and then add (or remove the ND Filter AND combine an increase in the Gain setting to compensate. Thoughts?

The problem i have is my canon xa-40 only has 1/40 1/50 which makes it 172 or 216 !
