I got my husband into Portal. All I had to tell him for him to understand the puzzle mechanics was, "Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out." He said, "Oh," and became a Portal master.
I kinda feel like it would be best story wise for her to experience Portal 2 single player before the Coop Campaign, as it spoils the gels for example, and I think it would be interesting to see her figure out more challenging puzzles on her own first.
The first time I played Portal, when GLaDOS said the test was over as I was sliding into the fire, I assumed I beat the game and that was just how it ended. I'm not entirely sure what that says about me, but I'm sure it says something
The gasp at “of course, he couldn’t come because you murdered him” followed by the cut to the Vergil clip was phenomenal, even as someone who’s never played DMC. And her voice cracking at “that was for the FUCKING COMPANION CUBE” - gf is adorable lmao
Puzzles in 2 are more complicated with a lot more features that the story helps ease the player into, if you make her play the multiplayer first she'll just end up looking to you for help again. Also, the reveal at the end is more shocking if you are more invested in the story.
Yes, she should play singleplayer first. It's better to play the co-op thinking together with someone than to solve everything alone, or watch someone do it. Singleplayer will giver her more experience with the game.
Dude, seriously, we really need to witness her getting to the cake and hearing the end credit song. That's the whole reason I watched the video. Please do another video with the ending. I beg of you.
Yes! Yes! Yes! I came to the comments just to find someone else who is thinking "WTF" about this. That said, it's possible that she just didn't have much reaction to it...? But her reaction at the end -- "That's for the fucking companion cube!" -- was so awesome and emotional, I suspect she had some reaction to the song as well. Please let us see it. 😢
one thing i always love to look for in blind playthroughs is if the person playing has been spoiled on glados actually being a character or not like youre supposed to initially think shes just some automated pre recorded type voice at the start and while there are hints of that not being true its not until you escape that it becomes very clear and i do love how glados gradually drops her formal and official tone the closer you get to her switching all her "we"s to "i"s for instance
kinda reminds me of that bit in the system shock 1 intro where shodan switches from third to first person after her ethical constraints get removed which honestly mightve been the inspiration
She should do the story of portal 2 first so she'll have an understanding of all the mechanics. so when you do it together she'll be able to solve the puzzles a lot easier than trying to understand the mechanics along with solving the puzzles.
I've known people who couldn't wrap their brains around portals; but I'd been looking forward to the game since its first teaser trailer, which meant that I'd spent months considering the various possibilities of portals. So when the game finally came out I already had a solid grasp on the mechanics; and solving puzzles was entirely about putting the pieces together the right way, rather than wrapping my brain around the fundamental concepts. Also, what Boyfriend say about how he sits and thinks, and the Girlfriend wanders around and tries EVERYTHING? Yeah, I operate in Girlfriend mode.
I'm sort of a mix of both. I'll think about something and how to solve it at first, but when I can't seem to figure it out in my head I inevitably start going into Girlfriend mode. My barometer for not being able to figure it out is pretty low tho, so I just end up switching between the modes.
I first played portal when friends sat me down and made me. They couldn't quite understand how little effort the game took me. There were several reasons for this. First off, they had only seen me play with controllers, but I only did that a few times a year and wasn't very good at it, while this was kb+m which I was much more used to. Then there was the fact that I'd always been a fan of solving puzzles. Finally, and most importantly, I had actually played the portal flash game (a 2d performer that took some extreme amounts of inspiration from portal) and I already knew how to think in portals...
I cannot WAIT for her to play Portal 2. Thank you for having created this series and thank you to your GF for giving it her all in the games. Its such fun to see her see and experience these great moments in gaming and enjoy them! Keep it up both of you and have a happy new year!
I just finished playing Portal for the first time (amazing experience). While playing it, I legit wondered if you'd do a "Made My Girlfriend Play Portal" video, and lo and behold here it is!
I love the moment when GLaDOs mentions the companion cube and GF becomes motivated for revenge - that’s exactly what happened to me and I imagine a lot of us lol. Also definitely have her do portal 1’s solo story before you do co-op, it’s such a good experience! I bet she’ll love a certain Mr. J and his lemons lol.
I really love how you're helping a bit but mostly just letting her figure things out on her own, that's such a good way of getting her into games and helping her understand something you really like :') ❤
11:43 after Glados's insult, your gf's gasp coupled with the Bury the Light meme was the funniest thing I've seen all week. Thank you for making this video!
I remember when I first played Portal and I solved a puzzle with a milk jug to block a Lazer or using a chair to get to a certain area. I had no clue if I was playing the game as "intended" but the fact my own seemingly out of the box thinking solved those two puzzles/areas for me was a real highlight for me showing just how good this game is and just how enjoyable it could be
7:46 Background music: River Boy’s “Start a Cult” from Cult of the Lamb. Relaxing electronic music for a satanic roguelike that combines challenging Binding of Isaac combat with homely base-building and management ❤
It's beautiful how blindly she was able to play this. Even when I first played it I already had heard my siblings playing it first and laughing at the jokes while I was doing something else.
I LITERALLY almost never comment on a video. But for real, at 11:39 in this video when GlaDOS mentions companion cubes murder and you drop that transformation sequence I completely lose my mind and laugh so hard. Thanks for that 1 million times. Thank you.
Amazing as always! Portal is a classic, and cant wait to see you cover both the single player and co-op portal 2! As for recommendations, I have 2: 1. "To the moon" - Its more of a story game with puzzles than a puzzle game with story, but its one of the few games (and game series if you count its sequels - "Finding Paradise" and "Impostor Factory") that can match portal in its delivery of story and puzzles simultaneously. Also all of the games will make you cry, so be warned. 2. "Transistor" - Beautiful game with a masterful integration of story and gameplay. The game is action combat, but with a button to pause and strategically plan your move. Furthermore you get different skills throughout the game, and combining them in different ways is encouraged for narrative and gameplay reasons, giving it that sense of wonder and experimentation whenever you get a new toy. PS: These games also have something of a similar theme to their narrative, which I dont want to spoil, they are all amazing games, I would highly recommend all of them.
I recently discovered your channel and have watched almost all your videos. They are very funny and enjoyable to watch. I wanted to say that you guys are doing a fantastic job and I wish you good luck with your UA-cam journey!
My girlfriend and I played Portal 2 coop mode and she carried me throughout that whole game. Then she had me play Portal 1 and 2 while she watched, I had to do everything largely on my own, but I felt so smart figuring stuff out.
i feel like going for a classic keyboard & mouse approach to it would make things a little easier with all the jumpinh out from portals sequences since they can get needy for precise portalgun use but damn im looking forward for more gamer girlfriend lab rat experiments
Even tho her reactions were emotional for the companion cube and hated glados with all her life, I think that we all came for the video to see a gameplay with her commenting and experiencing the entire game from the start
seeing stuff like this really puts it into perspective. As 'gamers', especially if you've always been into games and have played all sorts, you're already pre-conditioned to expect things to go a certain way that leads itself to quick adaptability and thinking in a different way. I don't usually think about this often, but every time I do see someone really not accustomed to gaming it makes me feel weird. It doesn't feel normal. You can thank my parents for that. At 36, I've been gaming since I was about 2 1/2 apparently. I don't remember being introduced to games, some of my earliest memories are of kicking ass at centipede and digdug on the atari we had at the time. I'm certainly not that good of a gamer but the 'gamer brain' is 100% intact. It's also fun to see how someone not accustomed to games overcomes puzzles. I for one usually pick it up well, but I'm also in the habit of looking for shortcuts to get out of doing some things.
Great video yall, I actually tried doing the same thing with my girlfriend but sadly the mechanics were too complicated for her. Hope to see more videos from yall and if you dont mind any suggestions I think you should have your girlfriend play the metro series
Portal 2 is a game I remember VIVIDLY and love with a passion. I got it for Easter one year and my dad had _intended_ to watch me play it, like we did with the platformers I grew up on. Wellll... instead, it took me about a minute to figure out the portal mechanic and it took him 6 or 7 chambers to understand what was happening. The concept blew both our minds and then we discoverered the co-op. Then we became rabidly obsessed. I just recently bought the original. So guess who's about to get obessessed all over again? Thanks for reminding me, guys!
Portal is one of my all time favorite game when I first randomly discovered it and beat it in one playthrough. It was just so addictive to me how the short puzzles are layed out and as you said so satifying each time you reach the elevator. So glad that she was also able to experience it as well.
What in the Razbuten is this? (I mean this with absolute love and nothing but appreciation). This has been one of the best videos I've seen in a long while. Your narration and the comments of your gf made this an absolute treat! Very much looking forward binge watching more of your stuff!
This is a really nice video. The edits are all fun! I really like your use of those Wii avatars (Amiibos? Or are those from Animal Crossing? I never owned either so I don't really know LOL they cute tho) Some feedback: Maybe it'd be beneficial to be a bit more "show, don't tell" about it? Though I understand if that's the style y'all are going for. I personally got really into essay-ish type vids before so there's definitely an audience for that but I guess my preferences has changed since then. Looking forward to when your channel booms!
These videos are always so neat! You two's differing perspectives are always fun. I do think Portal 2 single player should come before co-op, though. Shes so sweet ToT poor companion cube Shes just making the best out of every game! Having fun is important I could never have the patience for Portals puzzles despite my love for the game lol
I've found your channel just a few days ago, and I'm already a fan. And now Portal? Great, nay, amazing choice of game! I would also highly, HIGHLY recomment both Antichamber and Manifold Garden. I'd love to see her play them!
These videos are getting so much more detailed and hilarious in their editing and memes! It’s been awesome seeing her gaming abilities improve, but you deserve so much credit for your video-making growth as well! Congrats to her finishing such an incredible game! She was much more patient with the more confusing test chambers than I was when I first played it hahaha I went crawling to my friend who had already finished it several times with my tail between my legs 😅 I agree with the others that finishing the portal 2 main story before the coop would be best, but I’m excited to see whatever you guys decide to do! (Also idk if you take suggestions for future games, but if you do: I saw a different comment suggest Transistor, and naturally that made me think of Supergiant’s magnum opus, Hades. That was my first roguelike ever, and it became one of my favorite games of all time, so I’m sure your girlfriend would enjoy it too! But again, whatever game you guys do put out next, I’m excited to see it!)
1:33 You probably already know this, but even the game testers thought this as well. When they finished it, they were like "yeah that was a fun tutorial, when do we test the real game?" and that's why they added Glados at the end.
I played portal like a month ago and when glados told me to wait until someone came after the cake part, I literally waited for like 5 minutes waiting for the door to open
Watching her think with Portals towards the end reminded me why Portal is truly sublime. It is a fantastic introduction to gaming, Valve paced the new mechanics and puzzles so well, and to her point, it really does feel like everything before the escape sequence is a tutorial for that final sequence. Half-Life 2 and Portal hands down have the best marriage of mechanics with narrative, (Gravity Gun and Portal Gun) giving the player safe beginnings with it, then tying it to the finale so perfectly.
In fairness, _everyone_ does the "put two portals on the floor and bounce between them" thing and the "one portal on the floor, one on the ceiling, fall forever" thing the first time they play _Portal._
There's a validity to her approach to learning. A lot of people, myself included, have to feel their way through a concept before we start to "get" it, then when we look at the concept spelled out, we would say, "OHHHHH so that's what that means." Adam Savage did this a lot in his career as a model maker. By giving her the controls and letting her do her own thing without interfering, hopefully you've shown her that you respect her as a fellow human being who can think and solve problems. Also please tell me she's played Portal 2 and you've played the co-op mode together.
I got my husband into Portal. All I had to tell him for him to understand the puzzle mechanics was, "Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out." He said, "Oh," and became a Portal master.

I love that she legitimately became attached to the Companion Cube! I actually have a plush that I bought over a decade ago
1:33 You probably already know this, but even the game testers thought this as well.
When they finished it, they were like "yeah that was a fun tutorial, when do we test the real game?" and that's why they added Glados at the end.
Its amazing how fascinated we are by seeing women play videogames that arent off the app store.
100000 Subscribers Congratulations!!!
Full props to her for playing it first-time with a controller.
I feel like the game is made ten times harder with such slow look controls
I woke up just now and my day is already made
My month will be made if portal 2 date night happens
Love all your videos and congratulations on the 100k subs!!! Definitely deserved and enjoyed watching this channel grow and everything in the future.
Definitely ready for a Portal 2 Date Night!
I love this series and your channel deserves a lot more viewers and love. Keep the content coming
I just found you guys today and watched like 10 videos in a row!! I would love for you two to play portal 2!!
Also please tell me she's played Portal 2 and you've played the co-op mode together.
portal 2 date night? yes, let's test the relationship.
Man I just found your channel and cant stop watching. Keep it up, love the content!
Oh my God did you actually reference "Dude, What Would Happen?" at 2:43 ? I absolutely loved that show as a little kid
Sharingirlfriend might be one of the best edits I've seen in a while
Awww I was waiting for her reaction to GladOS' song at the end.
"I think she's ready for some cake."
"And a teammate!"
*LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO*
Great vid! Portal is one of the best!
Im trying to get my girlfriend to play superliminal and portal on her own but she always wants me to do the harder puzzles for her so I feel you there
