      And those are unstable. I respect their work, but they charge almost 100 bucks per year per CPU for an enterprise subscription fee and I think that is too much for home users. So we have to live with an unstable branch of the repository. I'm not happy about that. I really wonder why nobody mirrors the enterprise repository for the pirates out there.

      I haven't experienced any problems with their non-subscription updates and I've been using them for a while now
      And bear in mind, although companies may pay a lot of money for software updates they are rarely guaranteed to be stable
      I've watched vendors over the years release updates for their own hardware that you had to pay for and these still resulted in a server stopping working
      And these are the only vendors that could do such rigorous testing to give you stable updates, yet they still slipped up
      At the end of the day, even if you pay for annual patching, you still have to test them first
      Given what Proxmox are giving away for free here, I've certainly no complaints myself

      @@TechTutorialsDavidMcKone thanks for your response and thus time. Yes, I can see how you are right. Even a two-week period of testing cannot guarantee a flawless system. However, it's obvious that the enterprise branch is more stable than the no-enterprise branch due to such two-week testing period after all. The reason for my concern is that I lately had a VM that was incapable to operate with due to qmp command failures. I wasn't able to stop it, I wasn't able to reset it. I made another update, because I think there was a bug in the system and only a restart of the entire host would solve the issue so that my VM would be able to operate again. A system start that causes all services to shut off for various minutes is not desirable, although there are redundancy solutions if this was a critical environment, which it is not (yet). Still as a home user who runs his own services (at the moment) I would love to get a premium subscription, if it was a little cheaper.

    I have a weird use case but this helped me make the jump from 7.3 to 7.4 and then use 7to8 to upgrade to proxmox 8. Thank you very much!

    This was very helpful! It's especially nice when your system responds the same as the on in the video! I'm all updated now and I have this video saved for future reference. Well done.
    Also I really liked the photos of Audrey, Marilyn and Elizabeth! Classic photos make for a great background for your videos. Jean Harlow's photo, from Judge Harry Stone's office...(Night Court), would make a wonderful addition to your collection.
    Again, thank you for your video! Liked and Subscribed.

      I don't have any room for Jean Harlow though
      The wall to my left, which is out of view, has Vivien Leigh
      And behind me is a Tolkien theme 😀

    it's too good to be true, the catch is the non-subscription repository is for testing not for production, so the people who think they can use proxmox in production for free they wrong.

    • @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone
      @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone  Рік тому

      That's absolutely correct, these patches are not intended for production use
      Although I've used them in labs and on home servers without problems
      But any sensible business should pay for a subscription
      There is a community plan to just get access to the Enterprise Repository
      But technical support is nearly always much cheaper than downtime

    Saw another YouToober going through this and after doing the 'apt-upgrade' he did 'upgrade-grub' and 'upgrade-initramfs'. Yours was the better explanation, but is it just a case of diffrent strokes ?

    • @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone
      @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone  8 місяців тому

      A simple change of that file works for me
      I don't see how upgrades for the bootloader or intramfs would have any relevance to disabling the subscription warning
      Those commands relate to the Debian OS which is what provides the virtualisation
      PVE is an overlay to make the KVM management easier and that's what's warning of a missing subscription
      The Debian OS itself is entirely free and doesn't require a subscription

    Great Video Appreciate your sharing knowledge.
    Can or should we do a limited version upgrade. If YES what will be the way to select the same.
    Say move from 7.1 to 7.2 While the latest is 7.3.
    Why I ask this is that are these upgrades stable (OR these are bug fixes) when released or should we stay a version lower than the latest one

    • @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone
      @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone  Рік тому

      As ever it depends
      It's usually best to use the latest version as long as that version isn't too new
      If it was only released last week or even last month, it hasn't had enough time for new bugs to be detected and reported and the last thing you want is to upgrade to a version that makes the computer unusable
      Having said that, a majority security fix can take precedence
      If there's a chance of a vulnerability being exploited on a computer then an upgrade to the newer version is essential

    • @bhupindersingh3880
      @bhupindersingh3880 Рік тому

      @@TechTutorialsDavidMcKone Can we specify the version in the no subscription mode?

    • @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone
      @TechTutorialsDavidMcKone  Рік тому

      @@bhupindersingh3880 It just connects to the repositories and downloads what's there
      So if you don't want the latest version then wait until it has been out longer
      I'm not seeing a manual option for updates other than to install over the top from an ISO
