What a great idea from the owner. Definitely not in it for making money, but wants the land to be used by the community. Fantastic idea, more land owners should do this.
Huge congratulations to you and Jo. I was smiling throughout the entire video! I can just imagine how much fun you will have on your allotment. So happy for the two of you (and the dogs). :)
I purchased a woodland back in 2008. Half my life is spent there in all seasons and weathers. It is noisier than the city's at night. The owls hooting at dawn and dusk, the cows mooing, the mice finishing off the dogs dinner. Stacks of dead wood create habitat for insect who in turn provide food for birds and mammals. This year i put a beehive in . I fully understand your enthusiasm
The real boon is having the plot so close to your home. You'll be able to use it often. Congratulations on getting it, at £150 - £3 a week - it is a steal :)
What a fantastic find. When I was looking to do similar I found out you can only camp 28 days a year.....which ruined it for me. Can I suggest you keep this gem for yourself as some do gooder is likely to grass you up. What a wonderful opportunity for you, the smile says it all. You do plenty of other interesting content. Keep this one for yourself Paul.
He has a permanent home doesn’t apply , like previous said he’s renting he’s not going to be there 24/7 basically like an allotment & whos going to know if he lives or camps on it anyway , I found a bit of woodland local thats out the way where no one goes , similar to this ,built a small cabin could live on no prob , but the mrs n my wane would have something to say about it 🤣mind u im Scotland .
The first thing I did when I bought my plot of land in the countryside was build a fire pit. Very interested in how things pan out, Good luck from Off Grid in Latvia,
What a stroke of good fortune for you, the prospects are limited only by your imagination, look forward to seeing what comes of the venture AND so close to home, WOW. Am so pleased for you.
Think about creating a hedge by laying some of the Hazel etc on your boundary. Not easy but less waste & more aesthetically pleasing & good for wildlife.
Good idea. I remember years ago planting garden peas and using pea sticks rather than plastic netting. The peas utterly failed but the pea sticks came on a treat! ;-) I think they were hawthorn.
I subscribed because I like your outdoor adventure style. I'm turning 76 this year so I like to get ideas for my own touring at this late stage in my life since I have to focus on cutting back my activities. Though originally from Finland, I live in northern Ontario in Canada in a retired uranium mining town surrounded by crown land (meaning public land). I have plentiful access to free camping close to town in total privacy but I have a strong interest in getting the British perspective. Best wishes to you.
£150 for a year is an absolute bargain. You've inspired me to look locally as well for land owners renting out woodland. I had a look into buying a woodland plot but there's no way I can justify it. Looking forward to a lot more content from you in your new space!
Forty years ago we looked at an acre plot of amenity land a little over a mile from us. It had access from the Thames path, and was on sale for £4,000 plus legal costs. We dithered too long and missed out. So glad that you made your mind up quickly, enjoy your special place.
I used to have an allotment, thought it would be nice to grow a few veggies and just have somewhere sit. What i didn't account for was the amount of maintenance it constantly required and just how much time it consumed.
I know that joy. Friends of mine have allowed me to put an old caravan on their 156 acre bush block. It's only 70km down the road and I visit often during Winter, not so much during our very hot summer months. How's that serenity :)
Hello My friend, Thank you for your video. It makes me realise, not for the first time, how crazy our lives are. We go to work, down the rat run of the highway. In our workplaces, nothing is ever enough. They demand more, and more and more all the time, every day. We to buy our food from the supermarket. If we need to get about, we have to have a car and generally fuel it at the supermarket. Internet, phones, we can't function without them. The irony of all this, is to go and sit in the middle of a wood. Listen to birds singing, feel the breeze on your face and be at peace with nature. They go on, and on, and on about mental health, though it's modern world and the race to the top that is causing all the problems. What are they all chasing???
That is just bliss. Listening to the birds. I would get a canvas bell tent with the inner skin and spend most days on there relaxing, pottering around. Please turn this into a mini series what you get up to on there make for some good viewing
A few years ago, a good friend of mine was able to buy a 3.5 acre woodland. It’s absolutely stunning and is the perfect escape from the everyday hassle of life. We have camped there and had one of the most restful nights ever! He spends all his time down there now, and im soooo jealous! Great find for you Paul, enjoy it!👍
I have a patch of Crown Land I use just 40 minutes north of my house. I have a video or three set th3re on my channel. I had plans to do 'stuff' but changed my mind and just leave it as it is; bushland. I don't have exclusive use as it is Crown land, meaning anyone can be on it but the reality is nobody ever does. Just having somewhere you can rely on to hang your hammock means a lot. Best wishes with your patch of paradise, Paul.
Wow150£! Thats 3 nights at my favorite campsite and you get it for a whole year. Great deal Paul, I hope you both have lots of adventures there. Congratulations!
A really lovely concept to keep nature as it is. No new builds or destroyed wildlife. I locked stash box would be good to keep some emergency essentials like a rag to get your hot pot off your stove. Looking forward to you setting this up as a learning area for people who want to dip their toes in the wilderness but don’t know where to start, setting up a tent, bivvy construction, hammock hanging, cooking and campfire tutorials. I’d happily pay, in beer or money! ❤
Love that fencing that he built … so natural and blends into the environment…. You’re right to continue it around the perimeter .. you could get a buried wire dog fence running off a power pack to keep the dogs in … you could build a tent platform extending out from the existing flat spot it wouldn’t take much and wouldn’t have too much impact on the environment of the woodland … anyhoo seems like a great deal for a years rental at 150 quid …. Looking forward to a few videos from it …👍👍
That’s brilliant, great place for the pair of you to ‘do your own thing’, camping out without having to travel far especially when you’re reviewing new items for us your audience. Looking forward to seeing more of your small piece of heaven. Good luck. 😊
Good thing, you look happy ;). In Sweden we got access to all private land for camping in a tent one nigth, leave no traces and dont disturb. It is called Allemansrätten, means everymans rigth.
The UK is a bit small for this type of thing. Nice Idea but I shoot in my woods. It would be a shock and dangerous to anyone wild camping I didn't know about.
Good for you! I think it's difficult in many places to find a quiet plot of land to quietly enjoy. The UK, because of it's size and population, as well as historic land ownership, must be especially difficult. Enjoy your land and we look forward to more videos.
Great idea and what a good deal…but even better is to see how excited you are to have a lovely little piece of paradise to do as you please! Love it!!!
Well done Paul and congratulations on managing to secure your own little piece of heaven. For someone like you it`s a serendipitous situation within walking distance.I have a feeling your going to really enjoy it.
What a good idea....it would be great if more land owners did this. .I long to have a little rural space to escape to!! Looking forward to seeing how you develop it. In the summer it will be gorgeous!
Great to see you with that big smile. I own a similar sized plot. Best thing I ever did. When I'm there, I get a sense of belonging, a connection with the planet. Hard to explain, but, I hope everybody gets that great feeling, somewhere, sometime.
I don't mean to be negative but there are lots of aspects to so many materials especially in natural surroundings. Sleepers leach all sorts of toxins and are extremely heavy to carry into site
Very pleased for you, Paul. Here in the South East, woodland is on sale for up to £20,000 an acre! I'd advise doing some research into woodland management - there's more to it than meets the eye. To encourage plants, insects, birds and if you're lucky, small mammals onto your plot is quite an art and often what seems like common sense is the opposite! Fencing and tidying, which seem sensible, are often not the way to go... Plenty of videos on UA-cam and loads of advice online... this could be a while new set of videos as you learn techniques and try them out. Looking forward to it - whatever you do.
Plenty of land to rent up here in the moors mainly because the farmers need money.... we ring up farmers and offer to rent a bit of land to camp.... meet them first let them know we are sound and that we clear up #LNT they are usually ok and fine with it ... we always ring up a local farm first and ask because its the northern way ... most of the time the farmer comes up for a few beers and brings some decent home made pies
Paul, we’re so happy for you. So, you have some chores, wonderful chores. I predict a kind little grin, while you work around the place. Seems like a good idea. Hope it works out well. Thank you for sharing your life with us…from an old fan, retired in the US, foothills of the east Tennessee Smokies.
Sounds great. I've been after something similar. Small plots of land can actually be relatively cheap, especially if they have no farming potential. Maybe put a small sunken cabin in slightly higher up.
Hey Paul...I'm so genuinely happy for Jo and yourself. Such amazing potential from a clean sheet 😍 I can't wait to come on the journey with you both in developing this spot. How about some flowering shrubs and flowers for spring and summer, and a fruit tree 🌳 Absolutely buzzing in North Borneo 😀
Awesome! I did something similar two years back. Wanted to just get out for a week or two, searching for a nice little cabin to stay. After seeing the prices, I've looked for alternatives and a week later I got the contract for my little piece of woodland and a little cabin. The two week vacation would have costed more than the rent for a whole year of my own cabin (+ woods!). Just like you said, a little place to find some peace.
Quite right it is a really good find. Following your thoughts about possible uses, I can now look forward to some new and varied experiences from your time thee, that will be super to share with you. Good Luck to you both. May your projects be exciting and inspirational.
Well if that doesn't make everyone jealous I don't k ow what would! I've got some woods that back onto our garden, we'd love to buy it one day just to have some woods of our own. Really looking forward to the new dimension that plot will bring for you.
Hi Paul, just stumbled upon your channel. Wow, what a great idea. We would live to do the same but we live a long way from Sheffield. Really jealous, You and your wife enjoy.
Congratulations! What a great piece of paradise at such a bargain price! Often dream of being able to have my own quiet outdoor space for outdoorsy activities - there is hope! Looking forward to seeing what you get up to there! 👍 Enjoy!
.. Great find ... And in walking distance from home .. Keeping things simple and stress free ,, continue the natural perimeter fencing and clean up the widow makers for safety ... A great place for various videos and Jo's nature paintings ... and just a place to sit and take in fresh air .. Stay Safe ..
what a fabulous thing, how to use, not abuse land that he owns. I'll tell him when I meet him (It's Sheffield, you meet everyone eventually) Enjoy! I want to do the same if I can find out how, I'm just the other side of the Riv valley so sounds perfect
You could put a little veggie patch in there. Maybe runner beans, potatoes, carrots. It surely wouldn't be too long before you'll recoup that $150 in home grown veggies. I'd be tempted to put up a small shelter - make a frame and put a tarp over it. That way you could come out in the rain and enjoy the place.
I'm definitely happy for the both of you. It appears to be a great find at an awesome rental price per year. Having a quiet place as a retreat is very special place to go and "just be" or whatever you wish for it. Yes, Bravo 👏 🙌 good. 👍!
Wow Paul. That's given me such inspiration to look down here in the south of England for such plots to rent. Thank you so much for this video as in all honesty I never knew you could rent woodland plots. 😊
I have just Googled Places like this to rent. If I didn't live in the northeast, paul might have had a neighbour😂. The waiting list for allotment spots here is 4 to 8 year wait
There’s no procrastination with you now is there, what a great little idea. In New Zealand we have so much conservation land we can camp in but you can now put a little hut and table and a fire pit all only seven minutes from your home. I think that’s just awesome. 🙌
This entire idea is foreign to me as I own a 5 acre plot, with my house sitting in the middle of it…..we had to clear a portion of the woods to build the house and kept the rest pretty much natural. I live in the central USA. But I say good for you and yours! Everyone needs a bit of wild area because it opens up your soul to nature, especially if you are a city dweller! I look forward to seeing how you utilize it….and though I do not know you, from your talk and smile, I can tell you are already happy with it!
England is incredibly densely populated. It’s the most densely populated country in Europe apart from micro states like Monaco etc. it’s density is 434 people per sq. km. The lower 48 states, by comparison, is just 43 per sq. km. England is also largely urban since the Industrial Revolution. The idea of land ownership, especially under their system of landlordism where vast swaths of the country are owned by a small number of people, is alien to many people there. By comparison where I live, Ireland, has a population density of only 73 per sq. km (not necessarily for happy reasons) and land ownership is more normal. Especially because the old British system of landlordism was dismantled. Nowadays quite a few English people are buying small holdings in Ireland because it’s not possible in England. There’s lots of UA-cam channels like “The Irish Homestead” and “Off Grid Irish Homestead” dedicated to people doing just that.
@@mikehoward8201 it's incredibly hard to 1) find out who actually owns land in the UK 2)get it off them !. There's masses of land overgrown and defunct in the UK ..only no one knows who's it is !! Plus when you throw on the myriad laws about access plus trespass .. it's a bloody minefield. . To find a registered landholder who will allow a bit of private rental at a decent price ...is priceless and rare
What an excellent place, Paul & Jo! It's obvious from the smile on your face that you are just made up with it, and rightly so. Get those creative juices going, and we'll be waiting !🎉
What a gift! You will enjoy every minute! If you prune back hazelnutbushes in the woods you can stick the branches in the ground along your little land. If your lucky they sprout und you grow yourself a nice little hedge-fence!
What a fantastic idea! I'm now trying to find some woodland near me as that sounds an amazing plan. I'd love to be able to have a little getaway on my days off, not going far but enough that I'm not at home! Nice find!
I wish I could find some in my area! Looks like it'll be difficult. Might have to approach some farmers and see if they're willing to rent me some woodland!
WOW, Great News, Lovely Land, Congratulations Sir, I've Been Housebound Recovering From A Fractured Back, Dreaming Of Being Outdoors Again, Been Watching Your Outdoor Videos, Certainly Keeping Me Entertained, Inspiring And Motivating Me To Do Outdoor Activities When It Becomes Possible, Wheelchair Bound So It Will Be A Challenge. Thank You For Your Awesome Videos Sir.
I was wondering what would be the best thing to plant given in the summer there'll be a lot more shade from the trees. Would be nice to give the birds something as well.
Sweet, excited for you. Look forward to see how it goes over the next few months 👍🏻 As you say you don’t necessarily need to do anything much other than enjoy it for what it is.
Lovely little spot to chill and refresh yourself. Are you allowed to build a small bushcraft shelter like a bus stop type of one. Very excited to see what you do ☺ ☺
What a great idea from the owner.
What a bargain, I'm not surprised that you said Yes so rapidly, if I was offered a plot like that for £150 per year I'd say yes too. Well done.
That's awesome, everyone wants their own bit!!! How big did you get? Is there an average price per.acre in the uk
Really pleased for you Paul. I’m sure it will reinvigorate your camping and camp craft skills. Made up for you, well done
That’s superb, especially being so close to home 👍🏼
Cheers,
Gary B
The real boon is having the plot so close to your home. You'll be able to use it often. Congratulations on getting it, at £150 - £3 a week - it is a steal :)
Good to see it Paul; looking forward to seeing how you both make use of it :)

I think it's 60 days now but yes they should definitely keep this to themselves.
It's a rented woodland he's allowed there!!!
@@method9787 even if you own it you still have restrictions on what you can do.

Congrats! Having a "personal" is so calming and fun. Enjoy your personal "secret garden".
Don’t forget to leave enough space for hedgehogs to get through!
Brilliant Paul. I hope you enjoy it.
How lovely. You look so happy. 😀
Congratulations to you both! 🥂 Great bargain found by Jo 👍🙌
Absolutely brilliant Paul, nice to see the big man with a smile and so excited again.
Cheaper than a tv license and infinitely better. Great find
Hello My friend,
Thank you for your video.

@Garyh12345 Thank you for your reply. I couldn't find anything near me in Sussex.
If your plot is quite close, just take an eco flow delta 2 and and lower voltage electric kettle to make a brew. So much easier ?
There’s no procrastination with you now is there, what a great little idea. In New Zealand we have so much conservation land we can camp in but you can now put a little hut and table and a fire pit all only seven minutes from your home. I think that’s just awesome. 🙌
One of the most heart-warming things I have seen in ages. I'm so pleased for you both, and can't wait to see how the story unfolds.
Nice one fella. Bargain and it will give you, Jo and the dogs many days and nights of pleasure. All the best mate 👊🙏❤️
It's easy to see that you're quite chuffed :) Good on you
Good luck to you Paul
Would love something like that . Pleased for yous both, look forward to seeing more of it
This entire idea is foreign to me as I own a 5 acre plot, with my house sitting in the middle of it…..we had to clear a portion of the woods to build the house and kept the rest pretty much natural.
@@mikehoward8201 it's incredibly hard to 1) find out who actually owns land in the UK
2)get it off them !.
There's masses of land overgrown and defunct in the UK ..only no one knows who's it is !! Plus when you throw on the myriad laws about access plus trespass .. it's a bloody minefield. . To find a registered landholder who will allow a bit of private rental at a decent price ...is priceless and rare
@@Dreyno Are there any more Plots being sold off that you know about?
Wish you the good health to enjoy it! 👌
Take up some fruit bushes to plant, red/ black currant and gooseberry it will provide you with an easy harvest,
I was wondering what would be the best thing to plant given in the summer there'll be a lot more shade from the trees. Would be nice to give the birds something as well.
u can get temp fencing pretty cheap its like plastic stuff with polls to hold it up
Sweet, excited for you. Look forward to see how it goes over the next few months 👍🏻 As you say you don’t necessarily need to do anything much other than enjoy it for what it is.
Lovely little spot to chill and refresh yourself. Are you allowed to build a small bushcraft shelter like a bus stop type of one. Very excited to see what you do ☺ ☺
Congrats on the private / practice camp...I just started on mine this past year, and it's been a life-long dream come true...
That is my dream! Love it!
Very happy for you Paul. 👍
It would be a useful place to do gear tests maybe.
The ability to be outdoors, to have a place you can call your own, well, it’s priceless. Enjoy it!
A dream of soooo many! Congratulations to you both and enjoy.
What a great idea and absolute bargain.
Even just to put a bench and sit. Managed the Brambles for a Blackberry crop
